    Hey look, a Krav Maga based gym that spars! Told you they exist. The gym I attend and coach at has a healthy mix of Krav Maga, Muay Thai, BJJ, Heavy Bag classes, and yes -- sparring. In this video we look at a few lessons to be learned during these technical sparring bouts.

    ALRIGHT, SO....
    It's been a minute -- and by minute I mean like 2 months -- since I've posted. However, I have a great excuse -- the birth of my son!
    I'll do my best to get more videos out soon, but for now I figured I'd post a sample of my weekly sparring. Here are some lessons learned from each round:
    Quick Note: This sparring session was kickboxing only. We do 2on1 sparring from time to time and as you all know I like to do knife sparring too, but in this case just kickboxing. Either way, it still improves fighting ability and in order to defend yourself you need to know how to fight.
    Round 1: If I have more experience than the person I'm sparring, I always spar just slightly above their level. This goes for power and speed as well, unless they start throwing hands but usually it doesn't reach that level. In this round you can see me do exactly that: sparring just above his level. This is a student that has been training for several months now has been showing great improvements every time. In this round I try to keep him busy with a lot of volume and I acknowledge when he lands a good hit.
    Round 2: So if you can't tell, he is MUCH taller than I am. This provides a fun challenge to try and get past his length. His punch range is essentially my kick range so I have adjust a lot. In this round, I attack the legs a lot and I try to incorporate more head movement since I'm basically ALWAYS in his range. I also attempt to attack when he's pulling his strikes back as this is the best time to strike because he is so much longer. I overextend myself quite a bit, but I still love sparring this guy! Always a fun challenge.
    Round 3: In this case, my partner and I are around the same level. He has super solid defense and is great at catching kicks (which you'll see plenty of). I'm able to get out of a few catches with the "limp noodle" technique from wrestling, however, he finally gets me with a really good sweep near the end. In this round, I strive for good extension on my strikes and apply the high/low principle so that I can get past his defense and find a home for my strikes. I do get caught in the clinch a lot where he much stronger than I am and if I could go back I would try manage distance better and stay strong in my stance.
    Round 4: Surprise ending!!!! This is a student who has been very consistent in class attendance so she is now starting to explore sparring. Again, I'm going just above her level to help her learn and keep her honest. However, it is also me that is kept honest! At one point I get a little too confident with my head movement and I slip right into a kick! Despite almost getting knocked out, this was an AWESOME moment in my opinion. It's a huge boost of confidence for her and a reminder to me to not let me guard down.
    Final thoughts: I always enjoy and appreciate the lessons learned from sparring every Saturday. I tend to lean towards more technical sparring and feel that while harder sparring is important, it is less needed than people think -- unless you're super serious about amateur/pro fighting. My goal is to train martial arts until the day I die so I like to keep it light and fun. This is a great way to explore new concepts, reduce chance of injury, and ultimately just have fun and learn.

      Wow, dude congrats!!! :) Do you own the Krav Maga gym, or are you instructing or a student there? I find as a father (also cuz I work till 18 most days of the week and my wife works every third weekend), that it's pretty much not possible to go to regular martial arts classes, unless I wanted to only see my son during mornings where I bring him to day care and weekends. So I solo train for the most part at flexible hours at the Fitness gym, shadowboxing (sometimes with a staff even) or hitting the heavybag, in between doing pullups or lifting weights. Then whenever possible for all parties, I arrange sparring with my network of martial arts friends and record sparring and other types of content when we meet. I do feel I manage to stay somewhat sharp and develop and work on stuff from shadowboxing... of course it's not ideal, but it's consistent. Hope you gradually find a good sustainable balance between martial arts, video content, and fatherhood :)

      Yes, finding a balance has been difficult, but as he gets older I'll be able to bring him with me --- and someday he'll be my little training partner!
      I do have my garage gym so I get to solo train at home a lot, but I definitely prefer having a partner to train with.

    When I trained Krav Maga, there was sparring and it was more self defense like than when I trained MMA. There was 3 vs 3 type sparirng, where it was very light contact to avoid injuries with all the confusion, but also pretty hard 1 vs 1, knife drill to sparring exercises with hard contact, sometimes regular sparring...

      I'll update my pinned comment, but yeah in this case we weren't doing self defense scenarios. More so kickboxing. We do also do 2on1 sparring and I play around knife quite a bit as you know from other videos :).

    Yaaaay the man is back! 😊 Really nice move from her in the end. This video made me think about your take on the age old debate about openhand vs closedfist striking, krav maga is famous for palmheelstrikes but in this session you seem to train more boxingstyle punches?

      Happy to be back! Yeah, I don't believe there are any gloves that pad the palm of the heel well so definitely harder to practice them in sparring. In a defense encounter I'm still going palm strikes all the way!
      Good eye! I definitely enjoy more of a dutch kickboxing style, but I also like to get a little unorthodox too. Sometimes I switch more boxing heavy or muay thai style, other times I like to use traditional karate kicks to add some fun!
