Meet the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly, along with our three adventurous children. Nine years ago, we embarked on an incredible journey, leaving our home in Alaska, USA, behind to explore the world. As teachers, we were fortunate to find amazing opportunities in Chennai, India, where we spent two enriching years. Seeking new experiences, we then made our way to the United Arab Emirates.
Just as we were settling into our UAE life, the pandemic struck, but it didn't dampen our spirits. Instead, we saw it as an opportunity for another chapter in our journey. We moved to Indonesia, where we currently hold teaching jobs, and it has been a time of learning, growth, and connection.
As a family, we thrive on traveling and embracing the unknown. Adventures are our way of life, and through our experiences, we aim to inspire our children to be confident in meeting new people, trying diverse cuisines, and immersing themselves in different languages and cultures.

Yay! I'm glad that you got to try lupis! And the first meal you had called "Gudeg", it's one of Yogyakarta's special meals. The thing you had with tempe was cow skin, and you were right, the egg was processed differently, and it's called "pindang" egg. The special sauce on top of the jackfruit is called "areh". As someone from Yogyakarta, I even love gudeg and still eat it from time to time, and it's definitely a perfect breakfast meal! What was your favorite meal out of the two? 😊

lupis and lontong are different eventhough quite same shape look like. lupis made from sticky rice and lontong made from pure rice. so lupis commonly serve with palm sugar and coconut grater and lontong for savoury dishes especially gravy dishes.thanks so much.

Cow skin or krecek. The egg was deep cooked in gula jawa (javanese/aren sugar) and coconut milk. That was not lontong, it may look like lontong but it was not. That was lopis. Sticky rice not rice

Es is "S" =ICE Blocks and We say Es Krim for ice cream. Look for avocado on/with ice blocks/snowy or shaved ice (Es Alpokat). Avocado is a fruit here not a veggie😊

The jelly stuff is part of the cow skin. In Indonesia it is called krecek always come with the gudeg the jackfruit.

Welcome to Yogyakarta. Enjoy food and hospitality. Gudeg made from jackfruit, tempe and krecek (made from fried cow skin) cook with sambal (chili sauce), coconut milk, spice. Mix it all with rice and eat it... delicious . The dessert is : lopis (made from white sticky rice warp with banana leaves) , white sticky rice, red sticky rice, and cenil (red and white like a jelly but made from casava flour). Thats all mix with liquid coconut sugar and grated coconut.

Try the hotel queen of south, its located perfectly on top of hill at parangtritis beach, wonderfull sunset, just an hour from your hotel

Lupis: a Gluitinous rise boiled & wrapped by banana's leaf, green color is from leaf
Tiwul: shaved casava boiled with sugar / palm sugar
gaplek: fermented and dried casava
Ketan ireng: black glutinus rise boiled
Juruh: sauce from palm sugar.
Klopo parut: topping from shaved coconut
a traditional menu from villager to work at farm. very very carbo because of heavy work

Gudeg with cedar and you guys all tried lupis, nice! In Jakarta, a seller usually sell lupis and putu together. Both using shredded coconut and palm sugar but with different texture ❤ lovely sweet treats

What you buy is 3 different traditional dessert from yogyakarta that mix in to one. The sticky one that u said lontong is "lupis" made from sticky rice, the dark one is "gatot" made from cassava & the red & chewy is called "cenil" made from wheat flour.

with that amount for 10k is overprice (imo) compare to same kind of dish sell in traditional market around jogja, even you can get half price for the same portion as this lady sell

If any do not skip to central sulawesi especially Palu city and Donggala to enjoy sunset from the top affordable traditional big wooden ship and enjoy the panoramic scenery of Palu valley and bay from Salena Hills and swimming in infinitypool Doda Hills, and the iconic floating mosque that survived from tsunami back in 2018
