I usually prepare myself with the country's language before visiting but at the same time this minimum understanding of the local language is really interesting. You get to interact with local people and really shows how people can be so friendly and helpful.
Hiji means one in Sundanese. The regional language is mostly used in West Java. Almost similar to it is Siji = one in Javanese language and it is mostly used in Central and East Java.

The kembang tahu (literally means tofu flower), the tofu is basically a pudding of the extract of soya beans before it processed further into common tofu (which is adding acids (usually acetate) that then make it more solid).
11:50 usually made from rice &/ glutinuous-rice flour mixed with pandan leaves extract & little bit water
18:00 additional explanation from the lady, the coconut milk & asian bayleaves & lemon grass mixed to the rice before boiling the rice. Malaysian nasi lemak is more oily than Indonesian nasi uduk, and they both tasty, great even with only slices of fried tempe & tofu not to mention with fried meat.. 😋
22:59 & 24:27 in Javanese, siji means one / satu, brambang means onion / bawang. In Indonesia, all allium called bawang (literally onion) and followed by other words to differentiate it from one to another (bawang merah = shallots, bawang putih = garlic, bawang bombay = onions, bawang daun/daun bawang = spring onions).
31:00 there's no smoothie here in Indonesia, we call it all juice (jus). 😁
PS: hope I don't annoy you with my comment 😅

also, want to add more about nasi uduk & lemak.
nasi uduk is a FIXED MENU. Usually consist of coconut rice, tempe, teri(anchovies), peanut, egg(thin sliced omelete egg or the spicy hard boiled egg)rice noodle/vermicelli, and noodle. oh and also kerupuk but it's not a must have in nasi uduk.
but some nasi uduk sellers also add some side dish to increase the price more. like.. fried chicken(indonesian style. not the western flour fried chicken)
but nasi lemak is like... what indonesians here call "nasi rames/warteg". nasi lemak is like.. coconut rice, but the side menu is free to choose. vegetable dish, fried chicken, and more. nasi lemak dont have fixed menu.

@@michaelkato8999 Basically, Indonesian food got lots of influence from various cultures : Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Colonial European, etc. Some foods were invented by the Indonesian (tempe, oncom, etc.), some foods were customized version with local taste (kecap manis, sambal kacang, etc.). I'm sure as a Chinese, you'll find similarities & differences between Indonesian foods and Chinese foods.

It's so heartwarming watching your kids eat Putu Ayu, it's a traditional desert that's kind of hard to come by now, actually. Putu Ayu is probably a childhood dish for many, because the whistle from the steamer is a cue for kids to go outside and call out the seller (who usually walks around the neighborhood bringing his cart). In Javanese Putu could mean "grandchild" (informal Javanese) or "circle/round" (formal Javanese) and Ayu means "pretty", it's probably called that way because it's itty bitty and round and pretty ☺️ it could also be interpreted as a cute grandchild to some xD

Sorry to say but imho it is a common thing in Indonesia that after the street singers have tipped a penny, they will leave. Most of us don't really like our moment of enjoying a meal disturbed by a loud singing. We just sometimes need a peaceful time and quality conversation while enjoying meal on the table. But, sometimes street singers have an outstanding voice so we enjoy to listen them first after few seconds / minutes and give some pennies to make them leave.

    • @ketonizer5953

PUTU is abbreviation of Pencari Uang Tenaga Uap = "Steam-Powered Money Maker". Lots of indonesian food name are abbreviation like that. Cilok = Aci di Colok = "Skewered Flour", Cuanki = "Cari Uang Jalan Kaki" = "Making money by walking", etc

when i was in elementary school in the mid-west the kids used to make fun of other kids who would bring lunch that was not “normal”… it’s great to see your kids trying food from other cultures and understand that there are options outside of lunchables and pb&j sandwiches (which are delicious, dont get me wrong)

"Uduk" is a sundanese-betawi word that means Stir-Mixed with Coconut.....the word is coming from 18th Century. You must try classic nasi uduk(very rare now)...which has a strong galanga flavor and the rice is a dryish texture..you have to hunt it in the Jakarta region, mainly in Central and East Jakarta, also in Depok(outside Jakarta)

Dang it, you make me missed those time I live in teeny tiny street in Depok. My friend's mom used to sell classic uduk, with semur jengkol as an optional side dish..

Klepon originally from Jawa (Javanese), and it spread around Indonesia. Its modify with various versions, different name in other regions thoughout Indonesia.
Javanese is the biggest and maybe the oldest civilization in Indonesia.

I think putu bambu was originally from East Java but already known nation wide. There is putu made from ketan (sweet black rice) in Sulawesi so they made them without sugar. Btw I miss putu but cannot find them in Australia 😂
