Orangutan Jungle Trek in Sumatra, Indonesia 🇮🇩 | Kelly Gets Injured 😱

- The moment we have all been waiting for! This day did not disappoint! Join us as we walk along the riverside village of Bukit Lawang and head up into the jungle of the Gunung Leuser National Park. The Lonely Planet called it one of the world’s “most important and biologically diverse conservation areas.” This UNESCO site is home to many birds, tigers, rhinoceroses, and primates, including the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan. With only 6,000 orangutans left in the world, we came to trek lightly in the hopes of seeing the wild and semi-wild orangutans in their natural environment. Here are some of the beautiful animals we encountered on today’s trek: Thomas monkeys, orangutans, macaques, a turtle, and huge ants.
On this jungle trek adventure, we definitely had some reservations about encountering apes in the wild. We are already a little afraid (and fascinated) by monkeys. Our experience is that they are mischievous and sometimes naughty or aggressive. When we were on Komodo Island in Flores, we learned how deadly Komodo Dragons can be. Being from Alaska, we have a deep respect for black bears, brown bears, and moose. So, anytime we go into nature to look for wildlife we know that this is their home, we need to give them lots of space, we can’t make loud or sudden moves, and we want to use Leave No Trace best practices.

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. I think you guys bring so much positivity into what you are doing. I usually watch another foreign solo backpacker who likes to travel to specific places in Indonesia (he has more than a million subscriber), he is a good content creator (hence, the >1 million subscribers), but your family bring so much warmth. Even better than him. Perhaps because you include your whole family in the video. You also react positively to certain events, while the other don't always do that. Looking forward to your other adventures in Indonesia. As an Indonesian who is living abroad, these kinds of videos remind me of home.

Orangutans are so beautiful. It's easy to imagine them existing in forests like that before people populated the area. Scientists say that Southeast Asia (including China) was HEAVILY populated with Orangutans before humans got there roughly 70,000 years ago. Apparently their populations stayed pretty strong until about 20,000 years ago when humans developed projectile weapons which they used to hunt them. Once that began, their numbers started to dramatically dwindle as they obviously don't reproduce super quickly.
So beautiful. I would just want to sit there, watch the orangutans and listen to the bird songs

Thanks guys so much for showing an ethical orangutan trekking experience. So often we see people sharing videos of feeding or touching orangutans, not knowing that it's dangerous (and illegal!) for the orangutan and for them. Still a little disconcerting to see how close people are - the recommended guidelines are to stay 10 meters minimum away from orangutans in the wild, but really commend you for your efforts to leave no trace and respect the animals you are there to view. Hope Kelly's wrist is ok and the rest of your trip went smoothly!

This was awesome. Really loved this video cuz I always like to see you guys go for hiking. The last time you guys went hiking in Nepal was absolutely amazing. Just the sad part you lost some footage towards the end but it's alright lucky you could make a montage using the pictures from you iphone. That really helped alot.. Be happy and stay safe everyone.
Thanks, Jam Rock! Hiking as a family is definitely one of our favorites activities! It was a really bummer to discover that I lost the footage. It turns our that Kelly actually broke her wrist. She's doing great now, but more on all that in Saturday's video.
Seeing your vlog, took me down memory lane back in 2001 when i walked 7hours to our camp site, encountered "crazy mina", couldn't slept because i was horrified by those leeches crawled around me, had the best chicken stew in the jungle, had the best jungle river view experience of my life and streamed down the river by tubing was awesome, truely experience & memory i'll cherish till i die. Wish Kelly a speedy recovery.
