- If you want off-the-beaten-path Filipino street food, with a more local (less touristy) feel, head to UGBO in the Tondo District of Manila. This place was busy with a younger crowd, with lots of music and action going on. The entire street is just one food vendor after another. We really only spent time on this one street, so I’m sure we missed a lot, as well. We were able to get a taxi here and back to our hotel with no problem. There were many tuk-tuk trucks passing through there, too. We never figured out how to get on one of those, so that is something we will have to try when we come back. In this video, we eat, eat, and eat some more. We had fried foods, meat on a stick, popcorn, empanadas, and the dessert YOU suggested: Halo Halo! Kelly found a twister potato (and off camera she found fresh chili and garlic peanuts). It was a full night of eating. We met so many fun kids running around.

We are the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly with our three children. We sold our home in Alaska, USA, eight years ago, and headed overseas. We are teachers and found fantastic teaching positions in Chennai, India. Two years later, we moved to the United Arab Emirates. Three years after that, during the beginning of the pandemic, we made the move to our current teaching jobs in Indonesia. We love traveling and finding adventures as a family. We hope that our travels will inspire and provide our children with the confidence to meet new people, try new foods, and enjoy learning a new language. Wow! You are quite adventurous venturing into the Tondo neighborhood of Manila. Even some locals do not dare venture into that area.
I know your time is limited but to truly see the beauty of the country, I suggest you venture out of Metro Manila and visit the countryside. Tagaytay is only an hour and a half South of the city and Batangas, the adjoining province has spectacular beaches.

I'd suggest to avoid eating too much fried foods especially sugary street foods for your health's sakes. These are not the normal Filipino food, these are just the fad.

Btw halo halo when literally translated means "mix mix". You should mix everything first before you eat it. If you don't, you'll get just ice and milk once you get to the bottom. Try it next time it will be much better. 😊

Adobo sauce is made of soy sauce and vinegar with bayleaf and pepper corns.
I started watching your vlog over the weekend and I have to say I have been hooked. I was born in the Philippines and moved to the States in 1996 and have not been back. That halo halo spot IS the original halo halo spot in Tondo. Also next time you have to mix the entire halo halo before you eat it. Halo Halo translates into mix mix.

By the way the difference between a regular and the special is not on the size but on the ingredients used or added into the halo-halo mixture to make it really special.
Usually special halo - halo is being added of leche flan,ice cream and crispies.

The EMPANADAS!! Its best eaten with vinegar or ketchup! I doubt there is much flavor on it without them😂 I also don't know why the vendors did not offer you some, maybe they are shy😅
