2023 Honda Goldwing 1800 - Why the two wheeled armchair is just so good!

  • I recently took the new Honda Goldwing B for a spin, up to Silverstone to learn all about the processes behind and safety features of, the In&Motion wearable airbag system, or wairbags for short. I was invited by RST to the event, so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to revisit the Honda Goldwing following my first review a couple of years ago. It's obviously a fantastic machine for covering big distances, but how does the Goldwing stack up as an all-around everyday bike? I try to answer that question, with a little bit of wairbag tech thrown in!

Since I got my Tour ,DCT, I don’t know what else I can ride out there, for real. This machine is just incredible all around. It got me so addicted. I never owned a wing in 30 years of riding. Honda really knows how to create the ultimate bike on the planet. Since new, I never had even one tiny problem. Enjoy this beauty.

@@randyshoop3214 It took me around 2 weeks to adjust and to remember not to rev in Drive. The DCT is a smart transmission. Once you start riding, you forget the weight of it. The COG is very low. Also, the DCT learns your riding habits.

I enjoy your content. I have worn a Helite vest for the past 19 months. As a former road racer and race track instructor I know firsthand the value of great gear. I've low-sided twice on track and high-sided once. My custom-built team leathers prevented any bone breaking or road rash. 31 measurements were taken for our leathers. In 2001 airbags were not available so I wore a Held back protector, as back protectors were required. My high side at 140 MPH rendered me unconscious and I was airlifted to the trauma center. Bad concussion and my two front teeth were knocked out. I view racetracks as much safer than the street. Tracks here in the US are required to have two ambulances on standby, EMTs, corner workers, specific run-off areas, etc. On the streets, there are cars, poles, texting, drinking, drugs, a literal cornucopia of things that can injure you. My main concern returning to the street is sustaining an injury that would be life-altering. Paralysis. Wayne Rainy or Chris Reeves comes to my mind. I write for Web Bike World and have reviewed the Helite eTurtle, the Turtle 2, their HMOOV backpack, and Mo'Cycle airbag jeans. I am currently evaluating the Alpinestars TechAir 3 and 5. InMotion is sending me a Held and Ai1 Rally to review. In the Fall I plan to do a comparison of all the airbags I have reviewed. Not which one is BEST since I will simply present the features of each. Everyone decides for themselves what is 'best' for them.
I review things to help others decide what they'd like to do. I make no income off of Likes, Subscribes, etc, just a very small stipend from wBW for my writing. I often ask the question that if you are/would be a law enforcement officer and bulletproof vests were not required, would you wear one? Why or why not? And if child seats were not required, would you drive with your child in your car without one? Like all things, we as humans feel things won't happen to us, just others. Or arrogantly we feel that our skills prevent injury. Or we 'are just riding to the store.' Just like anything else, if you experience a crash first hand, then your attitude most likely changes.

Tony ,I use to have a tethered air bag vest from Helite, almost certainly saved me from serious injury when I got T boned a few years back. I'm currently running a Dainese air vest, I chose this over other options as it's very flexible not having some sort of hard shell to house the electronics. However, the build quality has not stood up well to prolonged regular use.

Very good and informative video. I just got the same bagger GW you ride here and you covered a lot of points I had questions on such as manual shifting while in auto mode. I do have 3 brief questions. I noticed on our rather rough New England roads the front suspension seemed a bit soft and bottomed out on occasion. Does the sport mode firm up the front end? Next, I was wondering if you have the stock windshield on your bike? While it works good in highest position for me (6"4") I will need something a bit taller and wider. Lastly, is that the Honda rear carrier or an aftermarket unit? I ride solo and would like to tie a dry bag on when I head out for sweet corn etc. Your video quality is excellent.

Great content, I bought an RST Sabre jacket with In& Motion airbag built in. It really isn't that bulky while wearing, its similar to a level 2 back protector but slightly thicker and heavier. It isn't a tether system you have to buy a subscription and you get a 'brain' to plug into the back which collects data constantly from other riders, crashes etc so it is constantly evolving. Luckily, I have not had tot test this and wish I never have to

I have watched many Goldwing 1800 reviews, this is by far the best and most informative review. Do you know of a 150cc sized bike that offers auto transmission, big bike wheels and advanced design like ABS dual disc braking and adjustable suspension, for and 80 Year old biker. I currently ride a Honda ADV-150 or if my Thai lady has grabbed it I ride her Honda PCX-160. I had adjustable shock absorbers fitted to the PCX-160 and it is a softer ride.
Because the Honda ADV-150 has a left hand leaver operated rear brake, no abs, and right handed front brake with ABS, Australia will not register any new bike without dual ABS brakes.
These scooters are motorbikes with splash guard fairing. We cruise at 60 kph in Thailand, but they will cruise at 100 kph (60 mph) and have move capacity to over 115

I use an airbag jacket. It's kind of like wearing a seat belt. No one wore a seat belt when I was a kid, and they were a bit hard to get used to, but now I wouldn't think of driving a car without putting on the seat belt. Same with the air bag on the bike. Took a bit of getting used to and now I wouldn't think of riding without it.

I've been using the Ixon waistcoat airbag that uses the In&Motion detection for a few years now. I like that it isn't jacket specific and I can wear it under any of my kit. Dainese claim their system provides 10x more protection than level 2 armour!

The Goldwing is a gorgeous bike, not one that I would consider at the moment but an incredible thing all the same.
Re airbag clothing, yep - definitely think it might be a game changer, the more protection the better, no? I don't think it will be very long before a system that envelops the entire rider in the event of a crash is developed. It needs to become a helluva lot cheaper, though, to become appealing to the masses.
