    Bought and sold about 20 motos. Had a bad experience with a 02' GW in Illinois. Exterior and plastic was pristine, had some nice accessories, price was right. Ran fine around the block, all the gears, and brakes were great. On the way home, got it up on the hwy and opened it up- coughing and stuttering. Got it home and started getting into it. Tank was full of rust! Fuel filter was clogged, solid.
    Private seller would not talk on the phone, and wouldn't answer his door. He knew he was scamming.
    Also a bad dude, because he had 3 other motos in his garage (BMW's). I sent an email to his BMW riding club, calling him a scammer, and fixed the tank with electrolysis. Took a week.

    The biggest issue I see with buying bikes is the test ride. Sellers are hesitant to let you ride the bike and as a buyer I won't buy without riding the bike. I find the best way to make the seller more comfortable is to show up on my current bike so they know at least I can ride.

    Well I always told myself I’d never buy a Goldwing until I’m over 60. So last month I turned 66, retired then hit a turkey with my ST1300. Japan being hard hit by the pandemic was 3 months out in supplying me with all the $4,000 plastic parts the dealer and the insurance company said I needed to make my beloved ST whole again. Frustrated and with some 401K cash I didn’t really need in my pocket I traded my wounded ST in for a new 2021 non tour lowly 6 speed grey and black, dare I say it , Goldwing.
    I’m officially old.
    3000 miles later I feel young again. Especially in sport mode. This is not grandpa’s Goldwing.
    Even better I found you. This super high tech chunk of plastic, wires and even some steel suddenly doesn’t seem so intimidating. Thanks so much. I’ll be purchasing your videos soon. :)!

    I am looking to move on a 1999 GL1500sr with 75,000 miles for $3250. Pictures look great. Owner claims to be second owner, and both have kept up all maintanance and kept garaged. Looks clean as a whistle. I will be using this video knowledge for my inspection. Thanks. It's two-tone cherry red and seemingly a loaded Touring package. Mileage aside, I see KBB says between $6-8K. Dealer bikes of similar mileage and age come in around $5K. Wish me luck, because I've wanted a Goldwing since the late 80's. My riding lineage.... mini-bike, Honda 125, Yamaha 400 Special II, Honda 700, Honda 750 four, 1988 HD Sporster 1200, Kawasaki Vulcan 1500, 1991 HD Sporster 1200 stroked and hopefully next , the Goldwing.

    Hi, Great videos....one note on tires that I always tell people to pay attention to is when they were made. They might look brand new and only have 100 miles on them, but if they are 7 years old....they should be changed. All tires are stamped with the week and year that they were made. Rubber is one area you should never go cheap, and is often overlooked. You don't want to have an accident due to saving a few hundred dollars.

    Goldwings are not without fault though, maintenance/labor costs are high on these bikes, stay away from bikes that sit a lot. yeah a low mile barn find is great, but should carbs ever need to come off, its labor intensive. some Goldwings have had cracked frame recalls, their fix? pull exhaust off and they lay the bike on the side and have a certified welder weld the frames. stay away from those. im a motorcycle/powersports tech with 30+ years experience

    I buy a lot of goldwings all used some wrecked. The best deals are salvage bikes if you know what to look for. If you don't then the I would offer the following. Look over the bike, if it's clean and relatively scratch free you know it's probably been garaged and maintained. Start the bike and let it warm up at idle listen for any chatter which may indicate a problem with the alternator drive. Take it for a ride and verify it stays in high gear. Other than that there is not too much to check. If the owner installed a bunch of useless items like belly pans or fork brace those sell good on eBay even though they serve no actual purpose. In general if it looks good and sounds good it's going to be fine. I can say this for any wing with 100k or less but would not say this for many other brands

    Yes I see your point. If you can’t (the purchaser) have a friend who knows something about G.L.’s to look things over so you both “buyers” with cash can talk about it it sort of makes the deal better in final negotiations of a better price. 2against 1 works best especially if the buyer drives a old wreck car to a private party house or garage. Dress down and drive moms car if you have too.

    • @henryxavier3751

      Plus your going to need to ride it back once you get there. Or you can resort to delivary via tow truck,transpo, or Uber? No doubt unless you know this type of bike I would test ride it first before making a deal. It’s big and heavy but on the highway they are a dream.

    Cruiseman, I recently purchased a used 2018 Goldwing Tour. Your channel has helped me learn the controls of the bike better than the guy I bought it from. No joke. I’ve always wanted a Goldwing and before I purchased mine I stumbled upon your TH-cam channel and watched several videos to help me prepare for the purchase. One of my favorites is the 20 essential things every Goldwing Owner should know. That video is very beneficial. Thank you. I also learned how to sync my phone to my GW by watching your step by step video. That was wonderfully executed step by step instructions. If I am ever in the Denton area, “I actually work for the company that built the giant power station in Denton and travel there often” it would be awesome to meet you in person and have a coffee at your favorite shop. My treat. Thanks again for the great GW tips. Ride hard and trust your tires. 😁 Thank you sir.

      @@cruisemansgarage I've been riding since 1971 and have owned about 50 bikes of all makes/models like you. I bought a 30th anniversary edition new when I went into the shop to get some oil for another bike I had. Life got in the way over the years and it now has a whopping 9,680 miles on it. I changed the oil every riding season and just put a fresh battery and Dunlop 4s on it. Fresh fork oil/seals 2 years ago and all the other fluids as well. It will go on the market soon and someone will be getting an almost new, blue color Gen 5 Wing that looks showroom! I am about to buy a very lightly used 2018 from an 80 year old gent who has to stop riding due to health issues. I just watched your 20 tips video. These things sure are complicated now. After seeing this video about the warranty I will get the extended warranty from Honda if possible. If it's out of time as it's Oct 2021 when I get it I may pass on it and look for a 19/20 model since they are newer releases and I can get the extension. Thanks for the good videos.

The hazard flasher button stuck on and I couldn't get it to turn off. Load leveler button stuck. I think the issue is once you set up your radio station, load level etc you don't use the buttons again.

    Good video, much appreciated. Two advantages were missed so far as buying from a dealer ... if you have a bike to trade in the dealer can spare you from the hassle of having strangers coming to your house to look at your 'old' bike, and secondly, in states that charge sales tax on private sales (which I think is most or all) the dealer will only charge you tax on the difference between the value of your 'trade in' bike and the selling price of the new bike. This could be a BIG savings and helps mitigate the higher price the dealer may be charging, especially if your 'old bike' is of high value.

    • @Levish01
      @Levish01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dealers need to make money on the old bike too, they spare the hassle of selling the old motorcycle privately but in most scenarios you'll be far ahead selling your bike privately. The trade in price will fit sure cover repairs they need to make and prep, profit and transaction costs plus adjustments for how desirable or undesirable the model is. A larger dealer will need to make a minimum of $2,500 on a trade to cover all that. The only way they will eat that difference or more is it you pay more on the newer bike (ether in cost or hidden fees), buy lots of accessories or end up in a loan that is unfavorable.

      Dealers are garbage. I bought a 2019 Kawasaki W800 from a dealer here in Tucson. The list price was $5,700. After all of their add ons that I couldn’t remove from the invoice the total ended up being $10,600. I worked a ton of OT and paid it off in 2 months, then received a refund for GAP insurance for $687. I will never buy from a dealer again.

    My first motorcycle was an used motorcycle, I fixed an electrical problem, oil leak from valves cover, starter, fuel pump, brakes, all oils, clutch, starter clutch, carburetor, ... It was not a bad motorcycle, compression 150 on each cylinder but I think the last mechanic was a little sloppy. For exemple, I had helical spring and old seal for the valves covers, this oil leaking make smoke on my exhaust. My carburetors was not at its right place so it was impossible to have a good idle. I had to order parts for my brake system and my starter clutch, it was not present. I am not a mechanic but I can fix an engine. The biggest problem with used motorcycle, I need to add money so I can think about the cost of the same used motorcycle. This is a good deal if I compare it with the monthly payment of a new motorcycle.

    I disagree about the maintenance being more likely to have been done on a Wing. People sell old Wings, and I mean OLD, and they've never replaced the timing belts just because the mileage is low. We're talking $30 in parts for the belts, and they may be 35 years old. 35-year old rubber is old rubber, just like an old tire. People tend to think a Wing never needs maintenance, and they've already spent a ton of money and don't want to keep them up.

    When I bought my videos... the promo code didn't seem to work... but well worth they were... also recommend the book from Wingstuff... somebody stopped me and told me recently to go to a shop and have the bulb changed... he was driving a 04 and it happens alot... so he said... I informed the surprised rider that I do it myself... I referred him to Cruiseman... and the book... with a 1300 USD tag for the 36000 mile inspection who would not consider to take tools to that thing... lol

    I bought another GL1800 goldwing back in February from a Honda dealer, I seldom buy from a dealer because of the reasons mentioned here however this was a really nice GW priced right about retail. It is very clean with new tires and a few extras like CB radio, rear wing and some Crappyakin chrome parts.
    First thing i did was change all the fluids and I do mean all! (except the fork oil). I would like to think the previous owner changed the air cleaner but I don't know so I will be changing it very soon too.I change d all the bulbs to led's except the low beam which are 55 watt HID's, no LED can compete with them. (Yet) Plus I have done many-many other thing since then. Goldwings are great

    I don't know if you've covered this issue in any of your videos but I would appreciate any help. My issue with Honda Goldwing is (besides wanting one SO BADLY that my teeth hurt) that I'm 6' 1". That's not the problem though, I have a prothesis (hip) and it makes it difficult to lift my foot to step on the brake when one's knees are bent at the angle Honda has a tall person enduring. I know there are kits to move the foot controls forward, however the engine on Honda is so wide that I don't know if that's possible, or if it's been made. I guess I'm rambling (unlike yourself) and I just need to know if you're aware of such a kit, or any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

    I have not be able to get a full set Dunlap Elite 4 on my 2018 Goldwing. But on my 2012 goldwing I get about 17,000 to 19,000 mile with good grip. I just put a set of Elite 4 on my 2018 goldwing tour. I use centramatic wheel balancer to keep my tires balanced. It is continuously balancing the tire to maintain balance. I use Western Service Contract Corp. Tire Protection plan for my tires. The contract is 3 years long and will replace up to 3 tire when you get a leak or nail in it. I have replace 3 tires due to nails in them in a 2 year period of time and they replace all 3 tires at no cost. Then sense I used up the contract. I purchase a new 3 year contract to cover my motorcycle tires.

    I was looking at a Goldwing to buy and noticed the windscreen was fogged. Is this fogging caused by lengthy time in the sun? Also, the engine covers on both side are quite pitted. Is this a sign of being left in adverse environments? Thank you.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how old it is, and how mush time it has spent in the sun. If it IS from sun damage, I would be concerned about other parts of the bike that may have deteriorated under that exposure.
