He’s only right on a technicality. Water alone has no flavor, but also water of that purity isn’t good for you (because it absorbs the electrolytes from your body). However, things like dust from distillation or minerals from natural water sources have a HUGE effect on flavor. The fact that water is so neutral is actually the REASON WHY WATER PURITY MATTERS.

Imagine owning a whole ass water company and not knowing that the water we drink is NEVER pure H2O. Like the reason we all don’t drink distilled water(pure H2O), is because it’s bad for us. Water needs to have some other minerals dissolved into it to properly hydrate us. Distilled water actually absorbs the minerals that are naturally in our systems and pulls them out of our system.

If you tried to fill a fish tank with straight tap water you'd kill your fish, because there are different chemicals added to tap water that makes it different than water needed for a fish tank. Like how can you own a water company and not know anything about water chemistry.

As an autistic person, I have such a hard time drinking water bc of the flavor. There is a smell to some waters, as well, and it can make me unwilling to drink it. Having other people come out of the woodwork to agree that waters have different flavors, even to the point that some are undrinkable (i literally do not drink water from restaurants bc I've never had a water that I could actually drink there) is refreshing. I've been told by Neurotypicals all my life that water is flavorless and that I made a big deal abt nothing (doesn't help that we live in a city with the best quality tap water and I can't even drink that). Having someone come out and make a whole niche where he describes the different flavors and smells of water (including how the container adds to that flavor!!) is genuinely so useful and makes me feel seen.

I like how he brings up wine sommelier as an example of why water doesn’t need a sommelier, but if you ask a SPIRIT sommelier, they would tell you that the water makes a huge difference. In fact, with vodkas, it is not uncommon for multiple brands to have the same distillate, but wildly different water sources, making the water the decider of flavor. Whiskey also tends to show terroir from the water source (Islay’s acidic and earthy tasting water being an extreme example).

"Water is just H2O, it's the same everywhere, it makes no difference"
I can't even begin to describe how terrifying that sounds. If you start a water company and you think you're selling pure H2O to people I'll assume there could be battery solution in your cans and you wouldn't know

As someone whos dad works with water, and was a treatment officer in water plants, water tasters are like, REALLY important. They get trained on water tasting like that guy does, because sometimes its a good way to tell if there is too much of a certain chemical in the water. Chlorine is usually the biggest culprit for weird tasting water.

Martin has had my respect since he went on the H3 podcast and recommended a specific German beer as the highest quality because of the water they use in production. I bought a 6 pack the next day and it was actually really good, dude knows his stuff.

I agree sparkling water fucking sucks. With no flavors to cover up the carbonation it just tastes like farts. I was once severely dehydrated and the only water my friend had was sparkling water and I tell you I was considering just dying of dehydration rather than drinking that shit. I had to force it down like medicine bc it tasted so bad. Idk how anyone willingly drinks that shit
