the only part i love about this is that corporations are losing their minds trying to figure out what can crack the algorithm with gen z/a, and then the random grocery bag they made for moms in their 40s suddenly goes viral

Funny because I am over here thinking ain't no way people organically go crazy over these mundane items so there has to be some company plants that manfuacture a hype and then unsuspecting people join in.

@@Vampress09Yep, that's exactly how that works. Marketing firms and large corporations pay "creators" to make hype videos and create false scarcity. Those Stanley cups are a great example, they're essentially valueless now to the point of being thrown out or recycled by thrift stores now that the current generation doesn't care about it anymore. But 2 months ago, people would trade their child for one. Pretty scary to see how shortsighted and easily manipulated the general populous is.
Once you start noticing it, everyone trend jumping becomes that much more cringey and gross.

You look very comfortable. Also, I really enjoyed your old video guide to shopping in New York - it would be great if you continued the series elsewhere. For example, I'm in a suburb of London but I'm new to *condup* shopping so I don't know where I'm going or what to buy in my city.

To be fair as a tote bag fan the bag is cute and very affordable although a little plain for my tastes. The Stanley cups the really don't understand because they're not affordable, actually way overpriced for what they are especially considering there's lead in them, and they don't have any special functions. You can get literally any metal bottle. I got one for $20 in California. I'm very prone to breaking things and I've dropped my bottle so many times and even ran over it at one point and it is completely fine.

Fair but you typically can't buy one or two from those factories. I've dabbled in getting stuff from those companies and you typically need to buy in bulk, I'd think for tote bags it'd be 10 at least. I don't see the issue in getting a branded one for $3 if you only want one or two.

The best part is that Trader Joe's is touted as an ethics/sustainability-forward store, and people drive to multiple stores and purchase multiple bags for some sort of fashion/clout/trend. They're just bags, they're normal bags, there is absolutely nothing special about them, the design is not cute it's just generic minimalism I don't get people sometimes, I get having one cuz they're cheap, and overall better than plastic bags, and if this stopped people from using plastic I'd be down

I know trends exist but this level of "gotta have it" is something special. This wouldn't be this popular if not for everyone on the internet saying it is. I honestly don't think the bag is THAT ugly but it's not definitely not "cute" ffs - it's a tan bag with colored straps, it's as basic and boring as you can get (that girl's fruit version is cute tho). There's a million of those bags with the same style, it's Stanley all over again where the name and just the fact there is a craze is the only thing that is important. If this was handled by a marketing team they did a great job because the hive mind mentality sure hits hard.

Some people buy merch from their favorite shows. Other's buy the clearly rejected items the company was gonna give the employees.
Literally the only company branded stuff i have were from jobs and i was given jt for free. This 100% looks like something that would've been included in a small "welcome to the staff" goodies collection, along with branded pens and a shirt

0:35 the point about consumerism in general you're making is totally spot on but for non americans here's the difference: Walmart is for anyone and walmart is also for poor people. there's no inherent status symbol that comes with being able to get stuff from walmart. Trader Joes is for rich people, it's basically like Whole Foods only other competitor. you NEED to be over a certain level of income to afford to buy ANYTHING from TJ/WF and i'm not gonna lie i know what food from both of those stores tastes like and it is generally high quality and delicious but shopping there regularly is insanely expensive. people who do regularly shop there incorporate that into their identity and think that because TJ just sells organic groceries and the bags to carry them home in and because it might be more ethically sourced than Walmart products, that this makes them good people. that's the whole brand identity of TJs, a person who can afford to buy Trader Joes has probably never stepped foot in a Walmart.
if you think about it it's actually kinda worse than Stanley Cups because there is no "implicit virtue signaling of morality" behind the marketing of a Stanley Cup.

I'd rather get a designer bag, honestly. Or just normal reusable shopping bags. A simple $2 shopping bag or classic designer investment bag aren't trend pieces you'll stop using within a year and throw away.
My Louis Vuitton Speedy 35 is a lot bigger than a Trader Joe's mini tote, has a zipper, is waterproof because the canvas is coated, is durable enough I can use it my whole life or sell it to someone else who will, and won't be tossed in the garbage once the trend dies since it'll always be a classic piece. And it cost me a similar price to the mid range of ridiculous resale prices of some of the Trader Joe's bags, lol
