It’s not just it, the original video had the full story of her whole family. The car was passed around a lot, her family moved to a farm, there’s the part about how her parents met and fell in love, plenty of stuff for a cheesy family movie.

On what planet is "my grandpa was nice to an old lady so she left him her car" a film-worthy story?
That little hot wheels feature seems like the exact r right place for that story. It's a cute little five minute story and at the end she gets a toy model of her car. Then she could tell tiktok about the time she was on tv

    • @WabbyDoo

    • @AndromedaD
      @AndromedaD 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

It might work as a series of vignettes? Like, here's what the car meant to the original owner (love story? Overcoming adversity? Freedom that a car represents? What symbolism is there in passing it on to a mechanic and not her child?), and here's a second in the future, what it means to her.
Still, probably not a full feature length film

    • @NosebleeddeGroselha
      @NosebleeddeGroselha 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

The full TikTok had a much longer story about her whole family and the car having multiple owners, Pinely showed just the start. The editing makes it seem like he cut up the whole video into that summary but no, he played the first part in full and then said the full video was 5mins long. I see how that confusion can happen, she cuts around a lot, it’s pretty jarring lmao

Yeah, it's like the psychopath/sociopath's view of empathy.
"You don't feel empathy, so why would you be nice or kind? Well, because you might get something out of it, eh? Wink wink."
Like...no, most people understand that when people treat them badly, they feel bad, therefore other people feel that when you treat them badly, too. So treat them the way you would want to be treated simply because you don't want to be the cause of more suffering in the world, or you even want to alleviate it for someone.

As a screen writing major I must say, there is not enough here for a full movie. Like basically her grandparents treated people nicely and then got a car. So they did something good got rewarded and that is it. There is no conflict, no real obstacles, almost no info on any of the characters, and almost no plot. Like was the gas station struggling and the family was arguing over how the gas station should run? How does everyone in the family relate to each other? Did he develop a closer friendship with any of the women that gave him a new perspective on life? Is there something special about this car other than it looks cool which can lead to more drama. There is nothing here that says this is fit to be adapted for a feature film. It could be a short story, or maybe a short film but that's it, but not all interesting family stories make good movies.

I'm a writer with some moderate success (nothing major but enough to live on), and I see this a lot where people just throw around the word "copyright" and think it's magic. It can vary depending where you are, but ultimately copyright is just the recognized ownership and right to replicate your original work. You technically don't need to register with the WGA (you can use "The Poor Man's Copyright"; mail it to yourself as register post and never open it). The important point to remember is you can't copyright an idea, just the execution of the idea. So the anecdote about her car can't be copyrighted. Her script can be, and so can the story she structures around it and major plot points, sure, but not the story she told in her TikTok. That's just an anecdote.
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she meant to say the script was copyrighted, but even then it's a little silly to go online and tell a story you think is so award winning or is going to get the attention of A24 (especially given the films the tend to go for). There's an interesting story in there, sure; maybe it's "her" going on a road trip to return the car to the son at her dying grandfather's request, and she learns about the good and ill in people across America. It's a good prompt, but hardly a million dollar deal. Also, if she was attached to NBC and Hallmark like she said, why sully those deals by having a stink like "yeah, I would have preferred A24"? It's like telling your boyfriend "you're my placeholder". Even if it's true, there's tact.

There's a weird sex scene involving the steering wheel and the PRNDL, and they've gotta flee from the gas station owners in a high speed car chase (granny's got skills) that ends with granny feeling fulfilled and the whole car floating into the sky as the guy and the business owners watch in awe. Father works at the gas station is nice to lady she eventually dies and he gets the car... I feel like you would need to manufacture a lot of plot to justify turning that into a 3 act structure.
Would she be the main character? I mean maybe but that feels even less compelling because she would be conveying events that were totally disconnected from her.

The full video has her whole family story, she tells about how her parents met at the gas station, the car was passed onto someone else and came back to her family after they moved to a farm, she tells a bunch of short family stories in the middle, it would make a cozy family movie. Edited comment: I went and watched the original video. I still don’t see it as feature film material, but that makes it more believable to me.
If anyone else wants to know the general rest of the story after he gets the car from the old woman:
•Mary Kate’s mom ended up getting a job at the gas station
•That’s where her mom and dad met, a ton of the family lived and worked there and her uncles met her aunts n stuff too
•Old woman brings in a totaled car when her life is already in a terrible place, Grandpa trades her the Lancer for her wrecked car
•Entire family goes out to live on a farm
•Grandpa gets contacted by that old woman who also essentially gives it (back) to him as a dying wish
    •keeps it in a barn
•Mary Kate grows up on the farm
•When she starts learning to drive, grandpa shows her the barn and tells her all these stories
•family fixes up the car together
There are details in her video that make me feel like her Grandpa told it with a lot of heart. I don’t feel like that came through with her retelling (more than my recap, though) but I think it did for a lot of people who said it should be a movie.
It’s a collection of stories that were impactful parts of her family members lives but not unbelievable when compared to any fiction, so I see why Pinely & the guy in the video don’t doubt it’s a true story

Okay, I’ll play devils advocate: Something similar to this already happened way back on tumblr not once but twice. Someone made a cute little post, it gained a lot of traction and people started saying stuff like “omg this needs to be a tv show!!”. Then somebody made a fundraiser saying they were going to make it happen (in both cases, I’m pretty sure they managed to raise a few thousand dollars though). Nothing ever came of it, whether they realised they were in over their heads or it was just an outright scam from the start. So ACTUALLY her thought process was, what if someone took this EVEN FURTHER (but she raised only a fraction of the money they did, fortunately) and it’s brilliant satire, actually (still not what that word means, I know I’m a terrible advocate)

i loved when you revealed she's an artist bc the whole time i was thinking, this is such a great piece of performance art about a specific kind of internet virality - there's the simple, heartwarming moral tale; the lack of attention to detail that unravels the whole yarn when you look twice; the cashing in on online engagement through opaque or nefarious means. i think it's about the trust we put in certain types of people online (she's aspirational, she has a cool car, she's an artist following her dream), the type of stories we want to consume (wholesome, didactic, no ugly moral complexities to contend with) and the outrage we feel when those stories are revealed to be untrue. it's very easy to get scammed and emotionally manipulated, and it's natural to feel angry and ashamed when it happens to you. (i don't fully believe she was scamming people, i think the kickstarter was one of those unbelievable little details that would make you go, huh? bc like you say, it's a tiny budget and why would you need to crowdfund if you have a deal with a studio already? the fact it only raised $500 indicates to me that a lot of people went, huh?) i actually do believe what she says about being satire, bc there are hundreds of real examples you can point to of people doing this kind of thing, and she got exactly what she wanted out of it, which was an emotional reaction from the audience. it's a bizarre lie, and to find out you've taken the bait is emotionally jarring. i do believe she's been working on the story for years, but i don't think any of the rest of it is true, including the car story itself. there is artistry at work here

dude I would be so mad if I was this late old lady. telling my son "there was this guy at the gas station that always did my tires for free. I thought that was pretty neat, so pls give him this car when I die." and then some random mfer "makes a movie" about an interaction that has nothing to do with her. like thanks, babes, people love it when you profit from their acts of kindness that aren't about you

Surely her life has had more happen in it that is more fully rounded to be made into a movie than someone gave a relative a car.
Like in the same vane I have my great grandads military medal for bravery that he won taking out a machine gun nest at Passchendaele in WW1. It's now split in two because the war deeply effected him and he broke it in two and threw it away. We only have it because his wife took it out and saved it. Everyone has stories similar to that they are not movie worthy, it's only just past youtube comment worthy.

It.. maybe would have worked as a locally produced short film? But even then, I think it would need to really highlight the history and geography of the local area to make it watchable for any audience. Locals would enjoy it.

As someone whose helped with indie films. It's actually common to make your own version of a film before it being picked up.
Basically to give them an outline. So her doing a gofundme and proposing it to companies is not out of the ordinary.
But since she's said it was all a lie... she's just stealing money.

Why would she be anything more than a writer on the film? The director? Nah, that doesn’t make sense.

I mean does she know A24's studio history even? "Heartwarming" is recent + rare.

OMG imagine being a woman of a certain age and some rando approaches you to check your tyres and oil. And you tell them - What the heck? Get away from my car! And they go - But my grandad told me to always look after the cars of old ladies! And at that point, whilst trying for her head not to explode, the lady would scream - I am not old! And even if I were, I could still look after my bloomin car, you uncouth yob!
Anyway, what an evil story you brought us, Evil Pinely 😜 Love ya ❤ 😂 xx
