It was ... exactly as fun as you'd think. :D As for Jonathan's comment, I'm actually rather glad they didn't do the Rambo thing and kept the belt in its bag where it belongs. For the mismatched pistols in L4D2, Valve was going to actually randomize the pistol models between levels so you'd have a variety of pistols. They couldn't implement it due to it eating into the Xbox 360 and PS3 console's limited memory, so they left it on the cutting room floor. The Pistols that were supposed to be randomized were a SIG, a Glock, a Colt, and a Ruger pistol, respectively. If you install the "Overhauling the Originals" mod on the Workshop, it's pistols are randomized in the way Valve intended them to be.
@@tPlayerioT They had the opportunity to do so, but RNG gun models is something best left to mods given it *does* eat into memory for something cosmetic (there's plenty of mods that restore the pistols though so it's no big deal)

Jonathan, the MP5 was only realeased for the German version of the game, since it released without any gore there (because of local laws) Valve gave the players a few extra weapons as compensation and it was one of them. Recently they added all the extra weapons from the German version for everybody
My only complaint about this is that he didn't go through the combat shotgun, yes its a spas-12 but it still would be cool to see his takes on it in L4D2.
Fun fact: all the shotguns in L4D1 had correct reload animations for full and empty, and you could interrupt it by left clicking then continue the reload after chambering a round. But other than that, it's unremarkable, I guess you could argue firing a SPAS-12 with the stock folded was a huge self-handicap for a shotgun.
@@Autonate_42 It does look cooler, in my opinion. With the stock down, it looks much more like any other typical shotgun, and the distinctive appearance is basically the only reason the SPAS is popular in fiction in the first place.

There was a game called BLACK on the PS2 and original xbox that'd be worth checking out. Its main claim to fame is the Extremely satisfying sound design. The models are pretty of-their-time but they cared enough to add animations for switching fire modes and fidgeting with the weapons
@@Sheridan2LT True but this is about modern levels of weapon fondling before CoD4 happened. The devs put a lot of focus on making everything sound and feel Excessively meaty.
Not just the sound design the graphics for the ps2 were also pushing it pretty much to its full capabilities , visually that's one of the best games you will find on the ps2 , it was brilliant
I have fond memories of Black, all the different guns were great fun to use and the sound design was very nice, I don't remember how accurate the models were to their real life counterparts but I did think they were very nice looking at the time.
That was an informative and fantastic trip down memory lane! I miss this franchise and its versus mode so much. B4B lacked that and died early as a result.
I never expected to see Jonathan break down the Left 4 Dead series, this was the major highlight of my entire childhood!! Edit: The MP5, including the AWP, Scout and SG552, was finally added from the Last Stand update. (was it released in 2020? Or 2021?) Back then, they can be only spawned through a console command yet they produce no damage. Also, the models were probably from Counter-Strike: Source, including the sounds and animations.
So the reason they're in the game but weren't normally attainable is because they only spawned for German copies of the game until Last Stand. Valve had to remove all of the gore options from the German release, and as a sort of sorry/compensation, they ported some CS:S guns over for them.
The glock is modeled after the glock 17. They reused alot of the models from L4D2 in CSGO. That's because Turtle Rock Studio was tasked to make a console version of CSS using the Source version from L4D2 because it was already on the consoles. The console version was then morphed into the CSGO we have today. The AK is still the same model in CSGO but has another texture, same for the Scar (it did get a scope)
Hidden Path was also behind the initial release of CSGO and they in fact reused a lot of stuff from Left 4 Dead (map designs, weapons, guns, some visual aspects, you name it).
The scar is not the same…the SCAR from the CSGO beta was a SCAR H, and the current scar in CS is a SCAR-21, where the SCAR in L4D is a SCAR L. All 3 are different rifles. Not even remotely the “same models”
@@Sheridan2LT It’s not a scar L in CS. It’s a SCAR-21. It’s a 7.62x51 markmen rifle with a longer barrel. The SCAR in L4D is a SCAR L, which is a 5.56x45mm assault rifle. Different barrel assembly, different dimensions, different cartridges
@@stuglife5514 according to the wiki, the L4D SCAR rifle is supposed to be a SCAR-L but actually resembles more of a certain commercal variant, with a very slightly different barrel length
I think the SCAR was burst fire for both reasons, first gameplay because the Scar was the alternative for the full auto M16 and second because back when this game was developed the Scar was not commercially avaible. We were aware of the update gun program of the United States Army and its competitors yet the Scar was not certified yet when the game was being developed. Correct me if I am wrong.
I'm not 100% sure. I do know that the first game I ever saw the SCAR in was Battlefield 2 and it was being hyped up big time back then. MW2 was next in line, and then L4D2.
It's funny you mentioned the SCAR's reciprocating charging handle. I know a few guys that were stationed overseas that were using SCARs around 2010-2011, and that was their biggest complaint in theatre. According to them, most guys hate the SCAR and were much happier switching back to the SOPMODs that were available at the time. It's weird how so many weapons in video games were hyped up (XM8, SCAR, ACR) as hard hitting contract winning weapons only to be cycled out after a few years of testing or in theatre use.
From what I heard thats why the SCAR-L contract with the US military was canceled. It didn't do anything the various M4 and similar type guns did better and did some things worse. But apparently while there was complaints about the SCAR-L plenty of US soldiers love the SCAR-H, the 7.62 battle rifle version. Or at least that whats I've heard/read.
I can definitely see it being a problem, also considering how bulky and large framed it is for what it does... Was made as an "ideal military rifle" yet it's barely practical as anything other than a DMR 😅
The reason he can't remember the MP5 being in L4D2 is because initially, it was pretty much exclusive to the German version of the game, which had some guns from Counter-Strike Source in as a way of making up for the fact that it was censored. You could access them with a console command, but otherwise they weren't really accessible until the Last Stand patch in September 2020 along with the AWP, Scout, SG552, and combat knife.
Well they must have been present in all editions and just locked out until then, because I distinctly remember during like the Beta or shortly post release seeing and using an AWP in L4D2 on a US Xbox 360 copy and the spawn system likely put that in by mistake.
you still able to get it through console before the TLS and it using a different animation (pax animation )i remember also i think there a glitch that make CSS weapon don't do any damage to infected
With turtle rock bombing with back 4 blood so badly. Valve isn't going to risk it themselves to make a zombie horde shooter that possibly won't live up to L4D/2
Correct! The minigun, and most guns with such a firerate in source games, had a looping audio clip, just like the airboat gun from HL2. Although now rather primitive, you'll still find similar approaches in audio design in other games but are much harder to tell. Far Cry 6 and Escape From Tarkov, for example.
@@mrnobody6447 I don't think game developers are worried about the cost of the ammo in their guns unless it's something like Fallout with an actual economy
the MP5 was added in after the latest update, when they gave us "The Last Stand" campaign, along with a bunch of new melee weapons, and new achievements. great vid!
"I don't remember using the mp5" That's because it USED to be a german exclusive, but thanks to the "Last Stand" update, they changed it so everyone gets the same amount of weapons
2:04 I think he might be onto something about the 15 round capcity for the 1911s now that I think about it... Left 4 Dead was originally built off the foundations for Counter Strike, originally even called "Terror Strike" and the Counter Strike's Dual Elite ARE Berettas. This technically makes the L4D pistols are a reskin of the CS's Dual Elites!
great video as always, but i'd like to add an explanation for the "MP5's Mandela effect": The MP5, AWP, Scout, Krieg and knife used to be exclusive weapons for the german release of the game, but in the Last Stand update that came out a few years ago they were made available worldwide.

I think you forgot about the Spas shotgun in L4D2. Hands down one of the best guns in the game. Awesome video none the less. I love watching things like this because it's learning how accurately they got things, and weren't just fantasy make-believe weapons, lol.
12:01 It's not just you, the Glock in game essentially has a full-sized barrel and slide but a subcompact sized grip, but it also has no frame rail like the subcompact Glocks and early generation Glocks do, making a weird variation that isn't actually available stock from Glock (though I am aware of some people in real life cutting down their Glock 17/19 frames to make a pistol with essentially the same proportions that can take Glock 26 mags).

But who knows, i'm already satisfied that you did this. A note for why Mr. Jonathan Fergusson couldn't recall ever use MP5 in L4D2 back in the day is because at that time, the MP5 along with AWM, Scout, and SG552 are only available for the Australia/Germany version of L4D2 (the "censored" regional versions) and for PC, you have to use Console Command to use them... until the Last Stand update came along and added the 4 region locked weapons back into the regular roster of firearms you can find in the map.
Still here hoping for a Valkyria Chronicles video somewhere down the line. Looking through the weapons and how their appearances change with upgrades. The underbarrel grenade launchers and flamethrowers would be interesting, and I’d love to see Jonathan break down the lances. It would be fantastic.

Jonathan would be the perfect expert to have for a production if you were lucky enough to get him. A perfect blend of understanding limitations while also pointing out not just details from memory, but pointing out why said details would exist makes it easier to nail all the key aspects to be faithful while still being able to fit within the world of a game (as he pointed out a few times out it maybe not being exactly right, but it's fun/impactful and that's what mattered).
Interesting tidbit regarding the pistols for L4D2 Originally, there were going to be six different models albeit all have the same basic stats so you can sort of mix and match This however would prove to be a detriment with memory limitations of the Xbox 360, though if I remember correctly, this can be reenabled via RNG based mods?

I'd love to see Red Orchestra 2 sometime. It was the first game where adjusting the elevation on guns sites changed on the model I played, as well as being the only series I've come across where machine guns have barrel swapping mechanics.
Since John didn’t say anything about it I gotchu. The rifle featured in game is the H&K G3SG/1, it’s a G3A3 handpicked for excellent performance over the rest of the batch and converted into a marksmen rifle. It features a very light crisp trigger pull compared to other G3 varients, features a stock with a cheekweld rest, and of course the rail mount sustem for the scope. The rifle was designed for counter terrorism operations, and was used throughout the 70s by many police departments and militaries. It was eventually replaced by the PSG-1. It’s an interesting find in game, as it’s a German military service weapon which never saw service with the US, as we went with the M14, M1A, and M21 line of rifles. Possibly, it was left behind by police departments within game. In game, it’s fire rate is capped from what it could really do, and like regular infantry versions of the G3, it retained its full auto capacity since they were originally infantry G3 rifles. Honestly, a rifle from a bygone era like most in L4D
Thank you to Jonathan and those at Gamespot who first thought of this series, I really enjoy watching him talk about guns both here and on the Royal Armouries channel. There's actually one game with a .357 and a .50 Deagle I can think of. 007 Nightfire had two versions of the "Raptor magnum" which were semi-auto handguns. A silver and black one was .357 and a black one was .50.
Syphon Filter (specifically The Omega Strain) also had the Desert Eagle in multiple calibers. Hopefully, we will have Jonathan cover this series at some point.
Jonathan, did you just throw the missus under the bus, for the entire internet to see? Good lord, the size of the wheelbarrow carrying this man's gargantuan tungsten cannonballs.
the MAC 10 have the bolt in closed position, it's suppose to tell the gun is the semi-automatic civilian pistol version of the MAC-10, due to the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, in the valve dev log, they said the gun was use by undeground and criminal so probably they had converted it back to be full automatic
Something I thought of when Jon brought up characters knowing a bit more about weapon handling than they should made me think, there should be more games where characters start off with animations of them slightly fumbling when reloading guns they haven't tried before, then progressing to proper form after a certain length of time/number of reloads
love the videos, love this guy. maybe show a model of the in game gun too so we can easily see what he’s referring too/ give him a better look at the gun
6:56 To Clarify, What Jonathan said about the M16, is that the M16A2 has a Full-Auto Sibling, that is the M16A3 that was used by the US Navy and it is the only Full Auto M16A2 that was issued by the US Navy
What you say is correct but that's nowt what I was trying to explain. "M16A2" has two meanings - the US military designation for a rifle with 3rd burst, and the Colt product range of the early 1980s, which covers various different configurations, all with "M16A2" rollmarks. Thus there are rifles marked M16A2 that are identical to the USGI M16A2 but with auto trigger mechanisms. The Colt Model 646 is the USN M16A3, but the Model 701 is also Safe-Fire-Auto and is marked "M16A2" for the above reason.
1911 also has an issue where the frame is the smooth version without the mounting rail but when you pick up the light it magically attaches to the invisible frame light rail that isn't present on the gun
Bulletstorm, borderlands, hunting bigfoot, medal of honor, duke nukem, dying light, dead island, kane and lynch, red dead redemption and maybe starship troopers...just some ideas. Keep up the great work john

On the 1911a1 I almost wonder if the vague homogeny the hi power has with it lead to them settling in the 15 round magazine? Both are browning designs, both have a similar footprint and both look largely the same to people not particularly versed in firearms. And if I recall correctly, hi powers back in the day made it a bragging point to have 15 bullets in one magazine

Jonathan, the MP5 was only realeased for the German version of the game, since it released without any gore there (because of local laws) Valve gave the players a few extra weapons as compensation and it was one of them. Recently they added all the extra weapons from the German version for everybody
And also brought back gore for the German version of the game/
The weapons are from CSS.
I love that John is also a L4D connoisseur. This man is a treasure
@@Sheridan2LT the most likely reason why games have the stock ontop is because that's its signature look, people look at that and know what it is.
@@Autonate_42 It does look cooler, in my opinion. With the stock down, it looks much more like any other typical shotgun, and the distinctive appearance is basically the only reason the SPAS is popular in fiction in the first place.
@@mr.kittysavestheworld695 That and also in most games, L4D2 included is the fact that is a powerful semi-auto weapon, not to mention it sounds powerful in most titles.
same with the Dual Pistol where you can able empty clip animation but it's only able to do once since you need to pick up a secondary pistol to trigger it
I think Into The Radius would be a good game for an episode. The gun cleaning and maintenance along with the jamming, re-useing magazines and conservative ammo all in VR would give Jonathan alot to talk about along with the guns themselves.
I was literally just about to comment this. It's a brilliant (and frightening) game, and the overall weapon details have impressed me. Lots of fun Soviet oddball options too.
Into the Radius would be so incredible. Especially since the bullet physics, like STALKER, are actually realistic
Tbf I doubt that’d be a good game for this series.
Mostly because it’d definitely be better letting him play the mechanics first, even more, a live commentary, as opposed to just showing them.
3:52 Fun fact about that: Every survivor knows how to shoot a gun except for Rochelle.

Ellis is a redneck who has multiple lines about knowing how to shoot a gun
Rochelle is the only one who states this is the first time she is using a gun.
This actually makes sense now that I think about it.
Coach is from the south, I'd be shocked if he DIDNT know how to shoot a gun honestly

There was a game called BLACK on the PS2 and original xbox that'd be worth checking out.
Its main claim to fame is the Extremely satisfying sound design. The models are pretty of-their-time but they cared enough to add animations for switching fire modes and fidgeting with the weapons
Nowadays if you don't have animations for every firemode switch it's below standard 😂

Yeah i played so much of this game with my friend when we both lived in the same city
So the reason they're in the game but weren't normally attainable is because they only spawned for German copies of the game until Last Stand. Valve had to remove all of the gore options from the German release, and as a sort of sorry/compensation, they ported some CS:S guns over for them.
@@SaltDoesArt Also, German L4D had its gore back.
So win win i suppose
TLS was released in 2020.
Back 4 Blood is the next game in the series. Been playing it sense release. Great game play.
I kinda dislike the SCAR-L being turned into a semi auto, tho I almost also respect an assault rifle getting a scope.

If he doesn't do it, don't be so surprised
Why do you want to give poor Jonathan an aneurysm? 😅
Would be cool, especially seen as he seems to like the victorian era firearms in the museum
Absolutely
I'd watch that
I think the SCAR was burst fire for both reasons, first gameplay because the Scar was the alternative for the full auto M16 and second because back when this game was developed the Scar was not commercially avaible. We were aware of the update gun program of the United States Army and its competitors yet the Scar was not certified yet when the game was being developed. Correct me if I am wrong.
Only other game I ever saw it in until then was MW2.
I'm not 100% sure. I do know that the first game I ever saw the SCAR in was Battlefield 2 and it was being hyped up big time back then. MW2 was next in line, and then L4D2.
'Shout out to my wife' - and a thousand nerds hearts were broken...
it should've been me not her!
I wonder where you might have heard that =P th-cam.com/video/pU8prp8Z_vg/w-d-xo.html
YEs.
Also, German version of the game also had its gore back.

Correct! The minigun, and most guns with such a firerate in source games, had a looping audio clip, just like the airboat gun from HL2.

Left 4 Dead was originally built off the foundations for Counter Strike, originally even called "Terror Strike" and the Counter Strike's Dual Elite ARE Berettas.
This technically makes the L4D pistols are a reskin of the CS's Dual Elites!
great video as always, but i'd like to add an explanation for the "MP5's Mandela effect":
The MP5, AWP, Scout, Krieg and knife used to be exclusive weapons for the german release of the game, but in the Last Stand update that came out a few years ago they were made available worldwide.
4:34 This is the first time I realize that this minigun sounds the exact same as it does in TF2, even the spinup is the same sound effect
The quick drive-by comment on his wife's playstyle at the end was awesome. I'm hoping we don't run out of Jonathan and his clever comments any time soon.

It warmed my heart when he started the video saying 'This is tremendously nostalgic for him' as it is for everyone whos played l4d!
I think you forgot about the Spas shotgun in L4D2. Hands down one of the best guns in the game. That thing hit like a hammer, but it had limited ammo capacity so you had to reload almost opportunistically otherwise you'd get mobbed, and possibly taken out by one of the specials. Awesome video none the less. I love watching things like this because it's learning how accurately they got things, and weren't just fantasy make-believe weapons, lol.
12:26 That's because about 5 years *after L4D2 got released* , Valve has included the MP5 as an update!
Probably made that way bcuz it looks kewl, and the Glock 17 looks dated and bulky with its full size.. It's a pretty big gun, I guess??

If I recall, the later versions of the Lenfield rifles from the 4th game somewhat resembled the Mk14 EMR, which wouldn’t be a thing in our world until 2008, I’d love to see a VC game taking place in the 50s or the 60s, I think that’d be pretty cool. But it’ll feel out of place if they don’t do it right, it’s like when you compare the 4th Indiana Jones movie to the previous movies.
Interesting tidbit regarding the pistols for L4D2
Originally, there were going to be six different models albeit all have the same basic stats so you can sort of mix and match

What about the G3? Not a super interesting gun perhaps, but it was my favorite.
Thank you to Jonathan and those at Gamespot who first thought of this series, I really enjoy watching him talk about guns both here and on the Royal Armouries channel. the MAC 10 have the bolt in closed position, it's suppose to tell the gun is the semi-automatic civilian pistol version of the MAC-10, due to the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, in the valve dev log, they said the gun was use by undeground and criminal so probably they had converted it back to be full automatic
Something I thought of when Jon brought up characters knowing a bit more about weapon handling than they should made me think, there should be more games where characters start off with animations of them slightly fumbling when reloading guns they haven't tried before, then progressing to proper form after a certain length of time/number of reloads

To Clarify, What Jonathan said about the M16, is that the M16A2 has a Full-Auto Sibling, that is the M16A3 that was used by the US Navy and it is the only Full Auto M16A2 that was issued by the US Navy
