Always a treat listening in on Jonathan Ferguson talk about guns in games. Especially when it comes to games from most of my childhood like the Crysis franchise.👌
Yes, that must be what they're going for but said bumps appear far too deep, hence I mistook them for holes. I did forget that the original Mk. 23 suppressor had dimples on it - ours is an aftermarket suppressor that lacks them.
Man I love Crysis, probably more than I should. But no shame, Crysis 2 was amazing, Crysis 1 and 3 had some great parts too, good gunplay and level design. Glad to hear it won the poll, and thanks to Johnathan for doing this series as always!
Have Jonathan react to more MGS guns. 3 and 4 have some interesting real and fictional weapons. Vanquish is another game I'd like to see Jonathan react to. More so for the gameplay than the actual firearms tho.
The Typhoon was developed specifically to deal with the Ceph (aliens) in the game. The Ceph are cephalopod-like (hence the name) and operate in combat using machine exoskeletons. The idea behind the Typhoon was to spew out so many rounds at the Ceph that they would get into the gaps of the armored exoskeleton and shred the alien inside.
I still think he should have a look at the guns from STALKER, hopefully before 2 comes out. Some real interesting ones in there that are based off real weapons and a few that aren't. Would be interesting to see how realistically they've been portrayed too.
Excellenty as always, I like the bits where Dave and Jonathan talk to each other, it is very nice to see how the conversation and reasoning occur behind the cameras.
Something to note about the missile launcher in Crysis is that it's actually a disposable weapon. If you look closely, the 'ammo' that is being picked up is actually a whole launcher, and the action the user is going through when they first pull it out to use it is to pull out and extend the weapon, like how an M72 LAW is designed. It's basically a fancy M72 with 3 shots instead of 1.
Gotta love seeing this. I commented a couple days ago on a different video on how I'd like to see Jonathan's take on the Crysis guns ,and here he is. Love what you're doing. Keep up the great work!
I love when games have evolving weapons. like here you can see how the "good guy gun" with each new game devoloped bit-by-bit. also got to love how this man pulls gems out like "yep, here I have one of the few we have..." the perks of working in one of if not the biggest weapon museums
The North Korean Assault Rifle (the AK) is also present as a hidden kind of easteregg weapon in one of Crysis 3's later missions where you need to take down 3 anti air guns in a large open area. Its been slightly updated from its appearance in Crysis 1 and also happens to be the single most customizable weapon in the 3rd game. A supposed nod to the more open nature of the first game, compared to the later two entries.
I love how in crysis 2/3 has difriend reloading animation for the nano-mode. Like when you're in maxed armourd mode your reload animation is much more agresiv,or stealth mode where you reload more cearfully.
I think the second rail underneath the carry handle of the "XM8" makes sense if you assume the handle can be taken off. In that case you'd have a flat top rifle and could mount optics closer to the bore.
MGS4 had some of the best modeling and persistence of shell casings for the time that it came out in. They even did unique reload animations based on if the gun was empty or partially empty. So much detail put into it that you wouldn't normally pay attention to.
I always took the scar to be an imagining of what the next gen of G36 would be. It feels more inspired by the G26c than the XM8 to me. Although they are so similar that might be a distinction without a difference. I believe the holes on the pistol suppressor were meant to mimic the dimples on the original Knight's Armament MK23 suppressor.
Really fun seeing the team tackle games less in the current zeitgeist like Crysis! I'd still love to see Johnathan go through the Killzone games some day, because a lot of their weapon design is SUPER interersting!
I love the hammering of the LMG throughout the whole reload process, except for the gentle flick of the belt into position in the middle of the whole gun violence.
Wonder how long it'll be before Jonathan gets to take a peek at Receiver 1 and/or 2? The handling in those games is... pretty crazy. (Including Receiver 2 having negligent discharges as a mechanic!)
the metal storm based gun mechanically makes perfect sense to break the whole thing open and remove/replace the entire barrel assembly. the real company had a 4 barreled handgun using the same tech and the reload procedure was replacing all the barrels.
Vermintide 2 might be interesting considering that jonathan is a curater for a museum and the game uses old black powder firearms in a sort of early renaissance late medieval ish setting.
To put in perspective how huge the Mk. 23 is: it’s about the size of a Desert Eagle. Maybe slightly smaller in some dimensions, but they’re more than comparable.
Just to make a point that I don't think Jonathan noticed, you don't reload the LAW in Crysis. It's a one and done system. Fire the three rockets, chuck it and grab another. The rear panel with the warning either breaks away, or is on a hinge.
The Typhoon has a really good animation of it working in one of the Crysis 3 trailers, would love to see him react to it. It is called "Typhoon" 7 Wonders of Crysis 3: Episode 4
Please Jonathan, made a video on *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* weapons. So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like the Patriot's infinite ammo magazine, the EZ tranq gun, Snake's customized officer M1911A1, Snake whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC, Ocelot's SAA juggling skills, The End's paratrooper tranquilizer Mosin Nagant, the Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher and Eva's chinese mauser clone. There are so many more other interesting trivias and weapons in MGS3 so please gamespot and Johnathan make a video for the game.
19:35 If you say that's the best 3d ejected case you've seen, check out the updated cartridge set H3VR got for the revolver cartridges a month ago. There's even very slight discoloration from the temperature
I can’t wait for this guy to take a look at some of the guns in a game I’m planning on making in a few years time, some of the weapons I’ve cooked up are just insane
Squad will be running a playtest of a major weapon handling overhaul, whenever that’s out and finished, it would be cool to take another look at the game
Regarding the XM8, yes Jonathan is right. Larry Vickers goes into detail about the proprietary attachment system in his video with Ian from ForgottenWeapons. It was called PCAP and IIRC it was just some general or other guy in the project going "NO! I DON'T WANT PICATINNY!"
Haven't seen anybody comment this, but I believe the feline could be based on the Calico M100 carbine, not sure if its obvious, but he never mentioned it.
Regarding the SCAR/XM8 having that bit of rail under the carry handle. That's where the carry handle is attached to the gun. If you take the carry handle off and replace the fixed stock with a collapsing one, it becomes the SCARAB.
The SOCOM pistol was actually heavily based on the prototype H&K UCP "Ultimate Combat Pistol" which was chambered in 4.6x30mm. The game also uses this same caliber.
One neat detail about Crysis 2 and 3 is that the reload animations are different between when the player is cloaked, using max armor, and default. The cloaked animations are much slower and more deliberate while max armor animations are quick and forceful.
The HK Mark 23 comes in a plastic case now! The same one as the VP9 which is kind of funny for the oversized monstrosity that is the Mark 23. Buddy of mine just picked one up and we shot it for the first time today. Supressed and unsupressed. It is as ridiculous as the stories
I would love to see Jonathan react to some of the guns from Ground Branch, I got into it recently and I’ve been having more fun with how real the guns feel than I am completing missions
Jonathon, not only does it resemble the HK Mark 23, but it also caught some characteristics from the very rare HK UCP. The design remained in prototype stage as of 2006, and was reported as entering limited trials, but the development and design got terminated in 2009.
List of a few other details: Bauer SOCOM/ M12 NOVA: Looks like a futuristic version of the earlier Hk UCP prototype (eventually became the USP). SCAR: Futuristic version of the Hk XM8 (would have been called the SCAR if it won the Scar program). Crysis 1 was chambered in 6.8 with Crysis 2-3 making the change to 4mm Sabot. Under-barreled weapons also include a miniaturized Gauss rifle and a miniaturized Typhoon system to add variety to player choice. Typhoon: The rifled barrels are housed in the front of the weapon and only the magazine with stacked ammunition is removable (as seen in the “7 Wonders” Crysis 3 Typhoon trailer). Gauss Rifle: The weapon is in a bullpup configuration to maximize barrel length. I would also surmise that the profile is inspired by the G11 given Crytek (a German company) featuring a lot of weapons inspired by Hk. Feline: Chambered in the same 4.7mm as the MP7, I wonder why they made that change from the Crysis 1 SMG? I personally always felt that the weapon felt underpowered for its size, and I wonder if the visual design of a more compact weapon would have changed the perception of its performance? Mk 60 Mod 2: strong resemblance to the MG4 with the dust cover on the side of the top cover (yet another German weapon reimagined for the futuristic setting).
If i remember correctly the ammo system of the SCAR doesn't change in real caliber but only on a bullet level, the 4mm sabot is basically an encapsulated 4mm in the 6.8mm round
@@v.h.s.italia I thought it was 6.8 SPC with a change to sabot 5.56x45. But with either model the magazine looks to be longer than either cartridge yet not deep enough to have a 40rd capacity for most cartridges. But perhaps its like the G36 magazine with larger dimensions than other types of mags?
I might be trippin but i remember a version of the XM platform that didn't have the arched carrying handle and optic section, that had a rail there. The Crysis XM-8 looks to be an almalgamation of all models of the XM-platform, so the model designers i think just put all the features present on one model, thus explaining the weirdly placed Rail. My guess is that the rail in the game version was meant to come off at one point, but was never implemented.
When Crisis 2 came out, the gfx in that game completly blew my mind .... they looked so good. In fact, for that time period, the game looked much better than any video or game trailer found on the internet, wich was just wild.
I think interior rail is there because the devs made the whole carry handle detachable for some reason. The “standard” SCAR-AB in Crysis 2 does not have the carry handle attached, making it much more like the ACR in look. This version without the handle looks really weird as the gun was clearly proportioned with the carry handle attached making the rifle look a little strange.
Multiple small bits to answer some of Jonathans questions and elaborate a bit: - The SCAR (Superior Combat Assault Rifle): Since Crytek is based in Germany, it would be best compared to a G36. - The underbarrel dart from 3:56: This is a tranquilizer round. Hit enemies drop sleeping for a bit when hit. And since the mechanic wasn't really fleshed out, ammo doesn't exist for it. And if memory serves correctly, then enemies you're in combat with don't sleep. I could be wrong with that though. - The AY69 also has a big brother in Crysis and Warhead called the MPX8, which is like a scaled up MP7. I also hope Jonathan makes a part two about the Crysis weapons and gets to see the MOAC and TAC Launcher. Just to fry his brain a bit. And should Jonathan ever get to play the games: Have fun!
The rocket launcher actually resembles a NLAW and the Rail under the carry handle of the crysis 2 scar, are meant to show that the carry handle is a removable accessory
Got a Q for Johnathan: You mentioned back blast being very important. Im wondering if a Javelin needs little to no clear area behind due to its known mini charge before the main rocket fires. Could it even be sealed/restricted behind and still safe to operate?
The backblast is from the launch of the rocket before its engine fires. It causes the same issues and needs the same consideration. Think of it this way: the Javelin's difference from earlier systems comes after-not before or during-the stage that makes backblast a concern.
For the Pic rail inside the carry handle of the rifle, it's just the right size for a 45 degree canted iron sight, or a flashlight/laser mount, or the new trend of a 45 degree canted pic rail, which would have a small pistol red dot mounted on it.
14:58 It's okay to think energy weapon sometimes when it comes to railguns, plasma and other ionized gases are also magnetic, plasma railguns are a thing and the U.S. military has worked on a plasma railgun called M.A.R.A.U.D.E.R since the 90s.
@@derekp2674 If we do, it's hidden in the guns description cause I'm not sure how you'd visually indicate something is going on besides classic gunpowder ignition. The movie Elysium has a gun that is a hybrid of gunpowder and railgun magnets, that was pretty unique.
@@livingcorpse5664 Yes the Chemrail gun there is pretty much unique but even that sounds like a two stage conventional/rail gun rather than an ETC gun.
As a massive fan of Crysis 2 I've never understood why the SCAR and SCARAB rifle had to be so similar and yet separate. They're both assault rifles with 40 round mags chambered in 4mm Sabot, the differences being what you can equip to each rifle.
@Johnathan Ferguson RE: backblast from rockets/recoilless guns. I was just reminded of this, there's a guntuber that i watch by the name of Brandon Herrera ('The AK Guy' as he is called and he does a playlist called 'The Darwin Awards' in one of these videos it shows a clip of what is presumed to be a middle eastern soldier using some kind of rpg. Right as he fires it one of his partners steps into the backblast and presumably dies from it as he's not shown getting up before the clip ends.
And about the darts, they're "sleep bullets", if I remember in the game. Tranquilizer darts. I used the attachment & they're good for sneaky situations, the downside is it has short duration & the enemy will wake back up. But still
more then any one game in particular id love to see him and a designer have a conversation about guns and not ones that are trying to replicate real ones, but fictional and where the inspiration comes from.
An episode were Ian listens to Snake and SIGINT's speel about the 1911 and EVA's proposed explanation for it's presence in Tselinoyarsk and gives his take.
I would love a reaction to Painkiller (2004) weapons, they are all unique, not realistic but cool looking weapons and most have a combo with primary fire and alt fire.
Anton, the developer of H3VR is slowly going through and refreshing the ammunition models, spent cartidges included. They now show proper dimpled primers and even discolouration. Though its definitely not enough for a video, (and you've covered H3VR before anyway) I think Jonathon would enjoy gawking at the details, even if in his own time.

Always a treat listening in on Jonathan Ferguson talk about guns in games. Especially when it comes to games from most of my childhood like the Crysis franchise.👌
1:40 it's not "holes" in the suppressor. It's based on the KAC mk23 suppressor which has a sort of "bumps" texture.
Yes, that must be what they're going for but said bumps appear far too deep, hence I mistook them for holes. I did forget that the original Mk. 23 suppressor had dimples on it - ours is an aftermarket suppressor that lacks them.
They are cuts to make the can lighter. Many suppressor makes do this nowadays.
@@hanskurtmann6781 The dimples on the Mk.23 KAC suppressor are spot-welds for the internal baffles.
Neat, I'd wondered what they were for.
The gun has infinite ammo, because magazine is shaped like the infinity symbol
I want to see his reaction to gun fanatic big boss speeches about weapons
@@kisel1973 .45 huh?
@@paulopatine A long type trigger with none slip grooves.
We have to see Jonathan react to this scene.
"Have"? Are you asking?
I never heard of that East German 1980s AK that he showed, but it looks pretty cool and I wouldn't mind seeing it put into other games.
I loved that thing so much
The dart firing feature isn't with the scar, it's an underbarrel attachment in Crysis 1
nope, it's in the second one too, possibly the third but never found it.
@@BeansAndWeens there is a rail gun attachment for Scar, but no dart attachment in 2 (don't remember about 3)
@@DrazenTC i think the dart go re-worked to be the gauss under barrel?
I love how in crysis 2/3 has difriend reloading animation for the nano-mode.
Like when you're in maxed armourd mode your reload animation is much more agresiv,or stealth mode where you reload more cearfully.
oh I really love that! How in stealth mode your character reloads very carefully in order to minimize sound.
Iirc og crysis also has different reloading animations based on nanosuit mod. Maybe i am wrong.
Would love to see Jonathan do a dream list of weapons he'd like to see in games.
I think the second rail underneath the carry handle of the "XM8" makes sense if you assume the handle can be taken off. In that case you'd have a flat top rifle and could mount optics closer to the bore.
For one of the future ones, I think having Jonathan analyze the future weapons from Darkest of Days (2010) would be interesting to see.
MGS4 had some of the best modeling and persistence of shell casings for the time that it came out in. They even did unique reload animations based on if the gun was empty or partially empty. So much detail put into it that you wouldn't normally pay attention to.
I will simply NEVER tire of Jonathan
Our main man: Jonny F.
I'm glad that there was an upgrade in the quality of Jonathan's webcam, perfect timing for the GPU melting graphics of Crysis!!
Really fun seeing the team tackle games less in the current zeitgeist like Crysis! I'd still love to see Johnathan go through the Killzone games some day, because a lot of their weapon design is SUPER interersting!
I'm so happy with the camera upgrade. It does help a lot on showing the guns aaaaand our favorite host
I love the hammering of the LMG throughout the whole reload process, except for the gentle flick of the belt into position in the middle of the whole gun violence.
Crysis is one of my absolute FAVORITE games ever. Awesome vid
The "crew-served pistol" joke was genuinely hilarious.
To put in perspective how huge the Mk. 23 is: it’s about the size of a Desert Eagle. Maybe slightly smaller in some dimensions, but they’re more than comparable.
@@gameragodzilla in length, yeah, but the desert eagle is way, WAY chunkier. Both in girth, overall appearance, and actual weight.
@@sultanofsick Oh definitely, the Deagle is way heavier. But the Mk. 23 is proportionally the same size, even in girth.
This needs a part 2. There are so many more guns that need to be explored.
I would also love to see him react to the Predator bow from Crysis 3 and ripping out the HMG from its socket and using it handheld.
Good catch on the Metal Storm! Dave’s becoming quite the firearms expert in his own right
6:56
That noise of confusion and disapproval made me actually laugh into my morning coffee.
Nice.
Nice to see Metal Storm get referenced.
I would offer my left arm to watch this man breakdown the weapons of Warframe.
The weapon you said it was a korean AK it reminds me a lot more from the COD mobile ASM10
Also love the new camera! Yes, we can see everything now!
Thank you for getting this man a better camera!
The SOCOM pistol was actually heavily based on the prototype H&K UCP "Ultimate Combat Pistol" which was chambered in 4.6x30mm. The game also uses this same caliber.
I suppose the argument on the LAW's backblast warning boils down to "If you can read this, you are standing in the wrong place".
Man it’s been forever since I played Crysis. Good stuff.
Finally we get to bask in the glory of Jonathan Ferguson, The Keeper of Firearms And Artillery at The Royal Armouries Museum in the UK in HD quality.
The story behind the origin of the term bullpup is adorable and that makes me quite happy. I'm going to look at pictures of bulldog puppies now.
I would love to see Jonathan react to some of the guns from Ground Branch, I got into it recently and I’ve been having more fun with how real the guns feel than I am completing missions
Would love to see Johnathon cover the guns of Warframe as some look similar to the real world while others are completely of the wall crazy
Jonathon, not only does it resemble the HK Mark 23, but it also caught some characteristics from the very rare HK UCP. The design remained in prototype stage as of 2006, and was reported as entering limited trials, but the development and design got terminated in 2009.
its wonderful content once again Mr Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries
List of a few other details:
Bauer SOCOM/ M12 NOVA: Looks like a futuristic version of the earlier Hk UCP prototype (eventually became the USP).
Multiple small bits to answer some of Jonathans questions and elaborate a bit:
- The SCAR (Superior Combat Assault Rifle): Since Crytek is based in Germany, it would be best compared to a G36.
About the first point i would say, the XM-8 is an H&K too, so not too far from the G36
6:57 the noise of revulsion
Can't wait to come see the museum in November Mr Johnathan. I informed the front desk guy that you are my spirit animal. Haha😂😂😂
I think Jonathan would appreciate the cases and reload animations in new hunt showdown weapons especially revolver, worth a revisit I’d say.
I would really like to see a part 2. There are still a lot of interesting guns to go over.
Pushing as always for you guys to have Johnathan cover Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and to cover the M8 and MRI Caseless specifically as well.
The rocket launcher actually resembles a NLAW and the Rail under the carry handle of the crysis 2 scar, are meant to show that the carry handle is a removable accessory
Yall finally got my man a new camera! About time!
I'd love to see Jonathan react to the guns of Far Cry 5, especially with the crazier special versions
Got a Q for Johnathan:
You mentioned back blast being very important.
14:58
It's okay to think energy weapon sometimes when it comes to railguns, plasma and other ionized gases are also magnetic, plasma railguns are a thing and the U.S. military has worked on a plasma railgun called M.A.R.A.U.D.E.R since the 90s.
But oddly enough, we never seem to see Electro Thermal or Electro Thermal Chemical guns cropping up in scifi games.
The gauss rifle especially in crysis 2 is insane and i always had ammunition for it when i had the scar gauss attachment installed giving me free ammo
I'm impressed they managed to get Jonathan to like their weird metal storm gun.
when he extended the mp7 stock, my stock also extended
Starfield is introducing some man-portable metal storm weaponry....keep an eye out come September!
