I was worried there too for the first half of Round 1. But once GS starting to put more focus towards managing closure, and the Rafale became more predictable with forcing the one circle. I was near certain that GS was gonna win.
The way the -14 tears around the circle and can get advantage over even later fighters is a testament to her designers. She really is one of the best gunfighters ever designed.
Gotta take into account the fact that DCS is not 100% accurate, and that it is only a sim and not real. The ingame flight characteristics of both aircraft might not represent real world characteristics.
@@nbn461 : True, but that works both ways. The F-14A in DCS is apparently much more prone to compressor stalls than the real F-14A, according to a former Tomcat pilot who commented on another video.

This dogfight actually happened in 2002, when the rafales had just become operational at flotille 12F. They had trained against F14s and F18s from the USS Stennis and Roosevelt.

Glad to see you in the Tomcat again, even if you’re using mostly two circle. Would love to see you take on the Flanker or something similar again with HOBS fox-2s. That was so entertaining when you did that last
Imagine you manage to dodge two Meteors in a Tomcat and come to the merge with a 4.5 gen Rafale F4... Very entertaining scenario, loved seeing my first favorite aircraft fighting the Rafale. Would really love a BVR fight between those two birds though... I mean what's the range of a Phoenix compared with a Meteor? I've been waiting for the day when you fly the Rafale. @@user45g-4c5rfare you guys seriously mad at the dude? He flies dozens of planes and has to memorize literally every flight regime associated with each one, all that under modules that are constantly updated or changed. Give the man a break Jesus
The one advantage of not having a restrictive flight computer, you have full control (until you lose control). As GS has said many times, the Tomcat will give you everything she’s got, even if it rips her wings off in the process.
Thanks for another awesome video GS! It’s always a joy to watch and listen as you break down a fight with all its mechanics while you dissect your opponent, their actions, and their mistakes in real-time.
Bro.... Watching you fly Is like watching a painter create a master piece! I'm retired Army so I know nothing (short of CAS request and 9 lines) about fighter/attack air frames. I truly enjoy watching you fly. Don't think we haven't noticed how you will never take fat Amy to the big dance!
Love the video! Always a pleasure seeing tomcat in action. I would really love to see a dogfight where terrain is impacting the outcome of a fight, mountains, valleys, hiding behind them etc
The F-14 is my favorite fighter jet because of all the tricks up its sleeve, which include: 1) Manual wing sweep 2) Putting the flaps down 3) Use of differential thrust 4) Transferring auxiliary power from the plasma coil to the warp engines
I was at first sure, that the smaller, single engine Rafale, would dominate at low altitudes, with the big twin engine Tomcat. But that was amazingly not the case! Good work !
12:10 That is what I notice happens a lot of times in fights against 5th-gen fighters. They keep forcing high Gs maneuvers getting super slow and almost falling out of the skies. BTW what is that thing under the F-14 nose? Looks like a pod, near that black-painted part, but I cannot see well.
Today I explained to a little kid at the playground that they weren't catching their bigger friends because they were "chasing behind" their target. Instead they should chase a point in front of them so they could cut inside their turn circle to catch up and get a good solid tag on their target. Feet can achieve crazy AoA.
If you fly the Rafael against the same pilot in the F14, you still win. This was the better pilot winning. No disrespect intended for the F14 pilot. Great video!

The Tomcat makes you work for it.
It's an impressive aircraft for something designed in the 1970s.

While he's in the thick of it, no less. Replay commentary is one thing but live explanations are entirely another
Some of THE closest passes without a collision. I puckered up and I'm not even flying.
I thought for sure a mid-air collision
Good thing the Rafala had canards and not elevons. Otherwise, that would have been a collision. :-)
Just seeing the silhouette of the Tomcat with its wings swept back against the blue sky...

Win or lose, I can watch the F14 every friggin day. What an aircraft. Great content, thanks man.
Love how the F14 shakes rattles and rolls when pushed in DCS!
A little like the old P-38 fights.
Dive down, get an angle, shoot. Miss. Outclimb. Repeat.
Yes, that's how the P-38 beat the much more agile A6M and Ki-43.
I would say the F6F Hellcat in Navy terms. Both of the 38 and the F6F were meant to outrun slower Japanese aircraft.
