The Remington 597 by Nutnfancy

  • Another epic .22 rifle for recreation, training, and pest control. The Remington 597 in most respects holds its own against the also-excellent Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 795/70 PSS Papoose rifles. In some ways it's better: its twin tool steel bolt rails, Teflon coated trigger components, and last shot hold open are upscale features at this price point. Its bolt configuration is smooth and sure and if you're lucky enough to find 100% reliable mags for it, provides amazing levels of reliability. The magazines remain the 597's nemesis. In TNP many Remington FACTORY 3rd Generation magazines caused us numerous problems: unable to load to 10 rd capacity, some not reliable (rounds tilting, jamming in box), and in one instance the floor plate falling off during shooting. The spring in it is also too weak (discussed). This aluminum 10 round box magazine does not compare well in quality against the Marlin and Ruger 10 round factory mags. Unfortunately things don't get any better with current aftermarket options like the so-called Remington factory 30 rd or Pro-Mag .22 rd polycarbonate magazines. With both it was a hit and miss proposition; even after being lubed with Remington Dry Lube inside, several would fail to feed, hang up, and jam especially in cold weather conditions. Some however, like the black Rem 30 rdrs, ran 100% in all conditions. The magazines for the 597 are just a box of chocolates; you just don't know what you gonna' get. Good ones are out there but you might have to experiment and test EACH one. TNP makes an official call in this review video for a high quality aftermarket 30 round Rem 597 magazine on par with the Ruger BX-25 and Tactical Innovations 30 rd Ruger 10/22 mags. These will sell well is my prediction and I am shocked the market has NOT answered that need yet. Another minor ergonomic miss in the design is the sliding magazine catch; not preferred by ANY of the TNP crew compared to the competition. The rest is all good: outstanding accuracy, easy attachment of optics, great sights, decent trigger, a perfect synthetic stock with ideal LOP, easy takedown and maintenance, high quality steel barrel with perfect profiling, and high durability. This is a lifetime rifle, like the Ruger and Marlin, and brings smiles and memories to your shooting outings...all without going broke. The Rem 597 checks in around the $160 price point (always changing) for most version which is a good deal for this American made .22 Classic. My favorite version is the 597 AAC-SD for its shorter, threaded barrel which accepts suppressors and flash hiders (for cooler looks). Ran with the awesome little Silencerco 22 Sparrow suppressor, this little AAC was wicked quiet and fun. Other versions will be issued as time goes on, each with stock, barrel, and coloration variations (some shown). Each will make a lifelong addition of fun and training to your inventory. //////////////////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 8.5 out of 10, if with ultra-quality 30 rd magazines and more accessories equal to the 10/22: 10 out of 10 ////////////////////Music: JS

One of the smartest things Nutnfancy says in this video is "No matter whether it's a pellet gun or .22, trigger time makes you a better shot." Too many idiots I've met will try to argue that a pellet rifle is "completely different from a real gun" and, thus, useless for training with. This is so entirely untrue that it's painful...particularly since trigger control, breathing, and the proper hold on a pellet rifle are FAR more crucial since the pellet will still be in the barrel during the recoil cycle. The "artillery hold" many prefer to use on spring type pellet rifles is slightly different from your average hold, but this doesn't make them useless for training. They're also far less dangerous/less likely to cause a ricochet than a .22 in very tight quarters for those of you who don't have a few acres to screw around on.

I agree with everything you said. I shoot pellet guns regularly and all the shooting techniques are exactly the same as firearm shooting with the exception of the artillery hold, it works ok on a rimfire but you will feel the kick on a centerfire rifle alot more. Also breath control and trigger squeeze are critical on a spring piston rifle for accuracy. Quality pellet guns coupled with good shooting technique and high quality pellets are wickedly accurate and have definitely improved my firearm shooting ability.

Got my 597 in Jan 2013, now we're at the end of the year, over 5000 rounds later, a trigger job done, guide rods polished, firing pin polished, headspace adjusted and it's a tack driver. 3-9x40 scope, bipod and sling. Using Remington 30 round magazines, zero issues with this rifle. With bipod on it, it's heavier than my 10/22 but just as accurate and dependable.

+dominatr37 I am looking hard for a new semi auto 22 Magnum. I own 3 Marlin bolt action 22 Mags. 2 are twins, my wife hates long range and hates scopes, so hers is bone stock. My twin to hers is also open sighted so we can "compete" with each other at 50 yards. My 3rd is a old Marlin 882 ( bull barrel ) with a 4-12 X 40 scope, and 1 MOA is the norm with Winchester Supreme ammo. BUT, I am really, REALLY wanting a semi-auto Mag. What kind of accuracy are you getting in the 597 22 Magnum?

My dad has one and it is the best semi auto .22 ever. It runs with all ammo. It has a laminated stock with a stainless steel receiver and barrel and I'm not sure if they make that type any more. Overall it's a amazing rifle for everyone.

Great review! Being a 597 owner, I couldnt agree more. I've put countless thousands of rounds through mine and i love it. I've never had any problems with my 2 factory mags, however, it has had ejection problems with bulk ammo where the casing will end up preventing the bolt from fully returning to its forward position. None the less, if I could go back to when I bought it at Dick's for somewhere around $135, I would buy it again. I also want to say thanks and keep up the great vids!

I've had both the 10/22 and the 597. I still have the 597 and love it. never had a single issue with magazines or malfunctions. it is a great little rifle. Mine is the same Walmart mossy joke camp model you have in the review. I think I bought it brand new for around $140 about 7-8 years ago. The only thing I have done is add a Bushnell 3x9 rim fire scope and sling plus a couple of spare mags. It shoots great and patterns close to MOA at 100 yards. thanks for the great review. Keep up the good

Thanks for the honest review. I wanted a cheap .22LR and Dick's had this on sale with a 3-9x30 scope mounted for $189. I was torn between the 597 and the 10/22 - after watching this review I was convinced that I couldn't go wrong with the 597 and the price was right.

I bought a Marlin 795 in 2012 and had to have it replaced because the dovetail mount on the receiver was crooked by about 30 degrees, got a new one 6 months later from the factory and it was crooked about 15 degrees, going to sell it and get a Remington.
    Thanks for the awesome review

Hey Nutn, keep up the good work.
Having just purchased a 597 a few weeks ago I was interested to see your review.
I bought 4 extra used factory mags from a used mag bin and they plus the one that came with it all hold ten and all work fine. I guess I got lucky in that respect.
I'm just over 1000 rounds in with zero malfunctions.
I love the bolt lock back on empty.
    Stock shape is great.
    Steel sights are great.
I don't mind the mag release.
Below: thanks for the tip on cleaning from the breech

Well I just got home from the range trying out my brand new 597. It performed flawlessly EXCEPT when I loaded Remington Golden Bullet and Yellow Jacket. They would fire most of the time but sometimes they wouldn't fire. When I loaded CCI Mini-Mags or American Eagle 38 grain it was perfect. No magazine misfeeds or anything. Put about 250 rounds through it today and only about 7 fail to fires but only with the crap ammo. Good rifle, accuracy is good too.

I love your gun reviews.....especially when you can get them at walmart. I sell guns at the walmart in my town and have people ask all the time "what do you think about it". If i have personal experience i will let them know about it but after that i usually recommend that they do some internet research. When i can send them straight to a video like this makes me feel good. The videos almost always support my personal experience. Also, turning people on to TNP is a great thing in my mind.

Yep I have a .17 HMR Remington 597 and I really love it! As far as I know it has had no failures ever in any way except for the magazine has a weak spring that really only allows you to use 5+1 instead of the advertised 8+1. The rifle itself has functioned %100! And the .17HMR bullets have never caused problems the only thing I have noticed is the cases will occasionally bulge a little bit but since you cant reload them who cares they've never broken or cracked or caused injury! I love the Gun!

Great review man. I love my 597, I have the gray stock one. I love the feel of it. Remington should make larger caliber rifles with that stock form. I can shoot it more accurately then my friends 10/22 could be just me, but he shoots my 597 better than his 10/22 also.

I've had my 597 for 12 years. It's got the gen1 plastic 10 shot mag, never had a problem getting 10 rds in it. My only complaint with that mag is it has to be seated firmly in place before the catch clicks. I have 3 clear Remington mags tough to get to 30 so I usually load to about 25. No problems with any of them, ordered 1 first to try then got 2 more. I find that as long as I use a min 37 grain bullet feed issues are not a problem. I generally stick to 40 grain rds. Great & Fun rifle, love it

thanks for the quality review Nutn, appreciate the hard work as always! My uncle, who I've done a ton of hunting/shooting with over the yrs, has a 597 and it's reliability has been okay, not great, and a high school buddy had the same experience w/ his. I've shot both of those and found them to be less reliable than 10/22s w/ factory mags (not sure what gen). My data points, but I'm stickin with Ruger or Marlin: more reliable, better mags and more accessories. Thanks again dude keep it up!

I own this rifle. It may not have as many after market products as the 10/22 but I had a choice of several stocks made by Boyd's. Also the Archangel kit. I went with the Boyd's SS Evolution stock. Because I saw some very nice rifles with that stock. I added a Centerpoint 3x9x40AO scope with mil dots. All and all I am very pleased. I don't have problems getting 10 rounds in the rifle of FTF issues. I plan to use this rifle to teach my grandchildren how to safely use a firearm. So shoot safe.

    Love my 597!!!
I love 10/22s and 795s but my 597 has actually been even more reliable which surprises many (Not that I have a problem w the other two). I would love to do a trigger job on it but other than that... a fantastic gun! I've had hits and misses when buying magazines. The ones I run, run great... but I agree about the 10/22 having the superior magazines -especially the extended ones.

I sighted one of these, I decided at 50 it was sighted when I could put a group in a staple. The mags used were all fresh out of the box, and while the 10 needed breaking in, by the end of the day they were taking all 10 rounds. The 30 rounders, the black is reliable, but I've found doesn't engage the hold-open, and the clear functioned fine in the cold, only misfed because I overloaded it, and they both took all 30 immediately, no disassembly on the mags at all. Overall great gun, seen 'em $150

I used to have a 597 VTR and it was the biggest lemon I ever owned . I had already bought the gun when I started finding all the bad reviews on this particular VTR version , not only did it fail a couple of times a mag but it had a ridiculous amount of screws to remove the tactical façade and it made cleaning a chore . Trade it back and got a 10/22 .

The VTR is the one that looks like an AR-15, right? There was a problem with the 5R barrels originally when they started making them, and there's also been a few glitches here and there...but, overall, the tactical version is made more for looks than it is for dependability or excellence. It was a model heavily aimed toward the Call of Duty "Tacticool" crowd because of how popular the AR-15 has become along with all the tactical stock/chassis units made for anything from the 10/22 to the Mosin Nagant 91/30.
Also; thee magazines can take a little time to break in, as can the action very rarely. Remingtons tend to be pretty tight, accurate guns...the Remington 750 is notorious for either being absolutely loved or vehemently hated, depending on how many rounds were put through it before they considered it a lemon and/or how many simply refused to send the rifle back to Remington to be inspected. Remington's customer service is pretty excellent anymore...I can attest to this personally.

I got a 597 at the end of 2011, and initially I also had issues fitting 10 rounds, eventually it loosened up and now takes 10 rounds fairly easily

Nice review. I have the 597. In a nutshell. Very accurate. Love the look and size. Magazines suck. The trigger on mine really sucks too. Might just be my rifle. Still looking for a good magazine. Thanks for the review.

@glennwih Cool! I think that High Standard .22 suppressed pistol was also intended for some behind enemy lines assassinations too.

I have had a 597 for over 10 years now. In fact I still have the Gen 1 mags. I've run 1000's of rds through mine and have had maybe a dozen fail to feed. I do know that I have to run Rem Thunderbolt 22lr rds for the best accurancy. My rifle simply works the best with that match-up. I have a couple of high-cap I got from Midway for about $15 each and they get the job done.

The ATF just cashed my $200 check. I am expecting my suppressor around July-August 2012. Just bought a Sig 522 for use with the suppressor as well (Thanks for making me spend money Nutnfancy!) haha

I bought a 597 for my daughter. It's always had problems with mags even with
    the newer replacements.
Also, the rifle is no fun to take down for cleaning.

I have owned my Remington 597 for close to 6 years now and I love it, the only thing that that bugs me about it is that there aren't as many accessories for it like the Ruger 10/22. I scoped mine about 5 months ago and was shooting fairly nice groups but I would like to really slow down and try to shoot some good groups. Thanks for the review and keep doing what your doing.

My 597 I modified to be free floating. A piece of paper fits well in between the stock and the barrel. I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell scope on it.

Great lookin' little .22 bro and awesome review! I'll be sticking with the 10/22 for now though I think. The next .22LR rifle I acquire will be a bolt action so that it makes the shooter (my son really) pay more attention to accuracy than the coolness of just pulling the trigger....lol!!

I ran 120 Winchester M-22s through my Archangel-kitted 597. Used 4 black Remington 30-rounders. Only problems could be attributed to the ammo: one dud and one stovepipe.
