"Remington 700: $700 for 700 yds" by Nutnfancy

  • There are many outstanding precision tactical bolt guns. Very few however will cost you $700 or less. Here's two. Welcome to the detailed Nutnfancy tabletop discussion on the Remington 700 AAC and SPS models. With hundreds of rounds fired at both range and long range engagements there's plenty of data to share. First is the value equation. Some compromises have been made at this price point and there's no avoiding it. The plastic stock on the SPS for instance is not free floated, lacks aluminum or pillar bedding, and does not offer the ultimate rigidity of a McMillan of HS-Precison Kevlar/Fiberglass option. The bottom metal is reminiscent of pot metal and of course does not meet military specification of steel manufacture (thank heavens). But at their heart, the AAC and SPS models are true to the proven Remington 700 heritage; one I myself have grown up with. A very strong receiver, big locking lugs, and a forged button rifled barrel (of perfect tactical contour for sustained firing) are hallmarks of this American made rifle. Secondly, accuracy did not disappoint. It is discussed and shown in depth with a variey of loads. 1 MOA is possible, even with these plastic stocks. Ergonomics are excellent in the 700 line: smooth operating bolt, perfectly postioned and positive safety, comfortable stocks (the green Hogue on the AAC is especially quite and comfortable), effective Supercell recoil pads, easy to dump floorplate, excellent and adjustable X Mark Pro trigger and an adequately size bolt knob. Shooting these guns was fun and rewarding...mostly. Reliablity was good but definitely not flawless. Several hang-ups in magazine feeding were experienced and ejection was anemic on several occasions. Keep the ejector and extractor clean free from brass shavings and carefully ensure all rounds are rearward pushed upon mag loading. Also methodical bolt manipulation on these 700s helps avoid hang-ups. The AAC version with its 20" threaded barrel is ready for either can or compensator and it is a very portable choice. It excelled in RunNGun action. For ultimate long range precision, I prefer the 26" barrel on the SPS gaining whatever velocity possible on the .308 chambering. This is a gun that can range out to 700 yards in the .308 caliber, perhaps even to 1000 with careful loads, practice, and shooting. Do analyze your POUs carefully as you may be better served by a good albeit more complex and usually heavier SAPR (discussed). Value on both models is excellent and Remington has outstanding service if there's problems. Competitive options at this price will include the also excellent Savage line up which offers the same value but is usually much heavier. The Remington 700 AAC and SPS are my current favorite tactical offerings in the Remington value line up. The major sacrifice here against a 700P or XCR Tactical offerings is the plastic stock. But again in real world shooting it did not seem to handicap these rifles and they lighten the carry weights substantially. You then can score a very accurate American made sustained fire bolt gun for around $600 ($700 for AAC version) that can keep up with many other more expensive guns./////////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale for both: 8.5 out of 10

    I purchased the Rem 700 ADL Varmint Bull barrel in the 308 Cal. I added a Magpul Hunter Stock /w Magpul magazine assembly. I purchased a Vortex viper 6.5x20x44 scope w/30mm tube . I put a cheap bipod off ebay for $20.00. I also reload my own ammo. I am shooting 150 gn bullet /w 44.0 gn Varget powder. It shoots great at long ranges. I have a Rem 700 AAC 308 rifle. Looking forward to rigging this gun out like the ADL. I want to do a comparsion between the two guns. By the way great video.

    Im in love with Remington 700, lots of mods you can put on this rifle, real accurate if you know what ammo and scope to use, last summer i pushed ~800meters from this little rifle, so only good memories after shooting... :)

    Have a Remington 700 in 30-06 for hunting, love it. All the stock options you can put on it I would dare to say it is the AR of bolt guns, very customizable to your needs.

    I bought a 700 P back in the 90s and it is my favorite rifle to this day. It is made like a Swiss watch, it just radiates precision and fine engineering. That rifle still shoots under .5 MOA all day long with with just about anything I put in it (although I don't use crap ammo). All of the 700 models are fine rifles, and if you are in the market for a bolt gun, I highly recommend the 700 series. Especially the 700 P.

    I'm glad I watched this. As a current poor college student, I have been considering selling my 700 to cover moving expenses. Really hard considering I took my first bear and deer with it. It's unfortunate that you regret selling yours, but hopefully others like me can learn from your experiences. Thanks for sharing.

      You can get rifles for approximately the same price that are guaranteed to be more accurate. Weatherby and tikka guarantee there rifles to 1moa and savage guarantees there rifles to 1.5 moa. I believe howas have an accuracy guarantee too. All those listed above cost just as much if not less than any 700.

    Christmas just came early for me this year! My dad just finished his 'ultimate' .308 precision rifle build (after three years!!!), and I just got his hand-me-down rifle that's been filling that role up until now: Remington 700 XCR Tactical Long Range, with a Burris XTR 6-24. He'd put the oversized badger lever on, and a piece of rail up front. He kept the bipod, but I had a small Harris and a KAC rail adaptor for it that went right on. Now all I need is some desert!!! Technically this is 'on loan indefinitely. I can sell or trade... but who would want to!?! I've been lusting after a 700P for years. This will fill that distance precision role just fine, I think...

    The Remington 700 has been made since 1964, it is the main sniper rifle the Army and Marines use only they call it the M24. I have a 700 Police model with the 26" Heavy Bull Bbl.It weights 10 pounds to the ounce. The last time i shot it, i put 5 rounds in two holes that was 3/4" apart, At 100 yards, i paid 650 dollars for it.

    The Remington 700 is a nice accurate rifle, but my Savage .308 model 10 Accutrigger accustock, shoots better then any Remington 700 for the same price range. Here in Canada the Savage model 10 costs a little over $800.00 Canadian funds. With reloaded ammo "168 grain hornady BTHP and 42 grains IMR 4895 powder, Vortex 4-12X42 Diamondback scope", I"m shooting 1/4 inch MOA most of the time.......Canada

    Hi, In the US you do not need a permit to buy a gun. They do an instant background check at the store when you buy a gun. Some states/ cities require a permit to buy a handgun, but most places don't.
    Out of my experience gloves help keep your hands warm and in the case of shooting they can help you keep from getting blisters, scratching fingers or burning your hand if you heat the barrel up.

      Compared to most rifles the 700's are fairly inexpensive. Very accurate long-range shooting can be a very expensive field of shooting to get into. Most decent bolt guns run between $3,000-$5,000 and up.

    • @MCHelper24
      @MCHelper24 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      When most people say "budget gun" they mean it as a cheap gun without making it sound like its poor quality, and no it's not in everybody's budget, but broad strokes get the fence painted quicker.

    • @yeentem1570
      @yeentem1570 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Getsome Most decent bolt guns can be a hell of a lot cheaper than that. This 700 could probably reach out to 1,100 easy, with a decent optic and the right ammo. Generally the rule is $1,000 for 1,000. You don't need much more than that to get good range.

    I'm Army 11B and I'm trying to make an M24. I found out that Remington sells them to civies, but they only make them in batches due to the hand crafting required.
    If you want an M40 and money isn't an issue, start with the action and build up.
    For me money is an issue, so I'm going with the 700 SPS Tactical in .308cal. It only has a 20" barrel, but it's the closest on a budget.

  • @stevehammond9156
    @stevehammond9156 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I took an 8 point at 872 yards last December with my Rem 700 BDL .30-06 and my handloads. It is a superbly accurate rifle for the money, I did accurize it somewhat with a B&C match stock which I had the bed glassed and the barrel floated, but it still has the stock barrel and the stock trigger, which has been adjusted down to a perfect 2 pounds. You can spend a lot more for a rifle but you are going to be hard pressed to get better accuracy worth the extra bucks. 1 hole, 3 round groups are easy.

At the time (Haven't checked lately) it was the only option for a Left Hand 700 in .308. Took it hunting the next year, man it was heavy to shelp around. 26inches is long for hunting! I recently shot one like from your childhood, 700 wood stock hunting rifle, 30-06. That rifle is SO much lighter. Very nice gun, but like you said different POU

    My understanding is that ADL is the simplest (lowest) grade Remington 700. All of the metal in an ADL is the same Remington 700 action/trigger barrel/quality that we know and love. The ADL will have the fewest frills-I.E. no hinged floor plate (you get a blind magazine instead) no pillar bedding, and hunter profile barrels (vs a bull barrel) Some of the SPS (Special Purpose Synthetic-I think) will begin to have more extras that are missing in an ADL. CDL comes with the most high quality extras.

    The Remington 700 ADL is a good gun. I am a big Remington fan, I own 12 remington 700 BDLs, seven of which are from the custom shop that cost about 900 bucks a piece. But if your looking for a first rifle, go with a savage axis (450$). I just bought one here not to long ago and from experience, it will hang with my BDLs with the right scope, i am very impressed with it. Go with a savage axis, its a very reliable gun, and you can't beat it for the price.

    I have been able to find remington 700's go for around $500 in my area. I have yet to own one for myself but I have fired it before and it is by far a favorite of mine when it comes to bolt action rifles. The weight and handling of the weapon makes it a very comfortable rifle to shoot.

    WOW! Thanks for making these reviews. I'm sure you get a lot of kudos from a lot of people but my profession is to make sure the internet works for everyone in north america which means the world so I spend a lot of time on a computer. I watch a lot of youtube videos while working on code and I have to say you do it right man. THANKS!

    Damn you Nutnfancy!!! I'm trying to save my pennies to buy a Remington 700 sps varmint and you have just increased its demand and as a result more than likely made it more expensive!

    The STANDARD, non-AAC SPS Tactical has the same dual point pillar bedding and stock as the AAC, just no threading. Thought that was the standard SPS tactical you were comparing vs. the AAC. They ARE free floated but when you lay the rifle on bags, or bi-pod it is no longer free floated!! I have a friend with a SPS Tactical and it's barrel starts touching the stock once it has much weight on one point, but they are a GREAT RIFLE! SPS AAC here I come and yes, I'll have the stock bedded/swapped!

    Great videos, please keep it up! I own the R 700 5r milspec, and didm' like the bolt knob either...... until i bought the KRG BOLT LIFT. Changes the entire feel of the action, absolutely no wobble or play when attached, saves time and money, no gunsmith needed, best $28 I've spent in a while. I strongly recommend and i think it looks good on the rifle as well.

    Thanks Nutn, I have had my SPS Varmint for over a year now. Not the lightest rifle out there but the accuracy has been devastating to predators. I have had the same issues with the feeding. Still a great rifle. Got mine for around $500 after the rebate.

    I have to say that I bought a Rem 700 (.308) for under $500 before adding a scope. It has touched targets well beyond 1,000 yards.

    If your talkin about the guy layin prone and touchin the bolt and it goin off. Rem asked to look at that gun and was denied but as the looked at many others and found gunsmithed hair triggers and self gunsmithed triggers and adjusted triggers that where past Rem's defined safety pressure and sear size. Meaning that they modified the gun past its safety measure and made the gun themselves unsafe another thing was found that most of the guns bolt and triggers werent cared for properly.

    I have the AAC model and I opened up the barrel channel in the stock for more clearance. On a good day I can shoot 3/4 MOA with 168gr A-max. Excellent bang for the buck

    it certainly is. the .270 is a great deer cartridge, and is adequate for elk with the right bullet. IMHO the .30-06 would be my minimum standard elk round but the .270 will definitely work if you're shooting quality ammunition and you put the bullet in the right place.

    you can not go wrong with the marlin xl7 for a first hunting rifle. I own one in .270 win. Get 5 shots groups at 100 yards that a quarter would cover. Have hit pop cans at 300. A very accurate gun, Remington now manufactures them. The xl7 weighs 6.5 lbs bare. Great recoil pad. pro fire trigger (like savage accutrigger), it is adjustable. Mine is about 3 lbs and very crisp, pillar bedded stock, fluted bolt, target crown barrel.
    can't go wrong for $400. Shoots just as good as my ruger 7mm RM m77

    I one of these in .223 with a Leopold zoom scope. At 100 yards it is no fun as the rounds keep going in the same hole. I need to go out to the desert to find a long range area to do some serious shooting. Good job NF....great gun as I love mine

  • @msc8127
    @msc8127 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with this statement. The 700's are great guns. I have several of them. But, the new vanguards are damn good rifles and the price point on them is awesome. 300 win mag vanguard with sightron sIII scope, and for $1000 total on the setup you have a great "budget" long range rifle assuming you're comfortable with the 300 win mag recoil.
