The 597 was the first gun I ever bought, picked it up at WalMart in 1998 which was the first year this gun was manufactured. I cannot even begin to count how many rounds I have put through this gun in the past 23 years with virtually 0 notable malfunctions.
My wife bought this as her first somewhere between 2007-2010. The only noticeable problem is shooting stingers. Other than that I feel the minor problems are a ammo thing not the firearm. Rounds just not going off. Not a cycling thing.
Replaced the original extractor with a Volquartsen and took it to the range today. The 10 round clip never jammed. The 30 round mag still jammed. However, I remember taking the end off the 30 rd mag after I purchased it and you know what happened next, the spring sprung out of the mag and across the room. I put it back in. Perhaps I put the spring back in wrong. After I took the spring back out and reversed it I had no more problems with the 30 rd mag.
Mine did the same for the last few yrs for same reason....Had no time and idea it was the extractor....Just installed volquar extractor...Will see what happens in a couple of weeks...wish me luck...
I watched your video. I have the same rifle. I purchased it from a pawn shop. I ordered the part and changed it out before I even fired a round. It chambers each round perfectly. I know, without a doubt, that's the reason it was sold to a pawn shop. It was spotless on the inside. I didn't have to clean anything. Thanks for the awesome video.
+Patrick Palombo No problem ! Its really the only weak component on the gun. If Remington knew this 7 years ago it would be the undisputed best .22 lr on the market.
I put a VOLQUARTSEN extractor and target hammer on my 597. I wanted it to be the best it could be and now it functions flawlessly & has a great trigger pull.
I bought one the first year they came out as my trusty old Remington Nylon 66 walked off on it's own. These first couple of production years were notorious for not cycling shells. Poor magazines, COMMON KNOWLEDGE! and worthless dull poorly spec'd. extractors. Mine was awful out of the box with factory 10 round Magazines. I cleaned polished and tweaked everything. Keep shooting aftermarket mags helped but this Volquartzen finally did the trick. Thanks for the testimonial and video. I shot some awful old poor ammo through it and it just chews it up. I've got about 1,000 rounds through it and no failure to feed or failure to eject. One failure to fire and that is it. It thinks it's a Ruger 10/22! Saved the gun for me.
Mine jammed or failed frequently until i slightly loosened the rod tension screws. They were too tight from the factory. If the screws are too tight, they will slightly bend the two rods the bolt rides on. Works flawlessly now.
i don't know if you noticed, but with your remington extractor the casings fly in every different direction with no consistency. with your new extractor all the casings eject consistently straight out or aft of the bolt.
I noticed that aswell. I have a brand new 597 that is doing the exact same thing. The supplied 10rd mag feeds fairly well but the extractor was garbage right from day 1. I even tore the bolt down and polished and lightly oiled the stock extractor and it still works like crap. The 30rd Rem mag i bought is 100% useless. I ordered a Volquartsen extractor so hopefully that will make her run like it should. I tried M22, CCI mini mags, rem gold, cci blazer, winchester wildcar, federal auto match and federal target. Some ammo failed to extract more often than others but every type of ammo failed to extract enough that it ruins the entire gun. Hopefully this new extractor will work.
I also changed the extractor with same as in this video, works flawlessly. I would like to add that if you over tighten the bolt guide rails they will bow out and might add to failures in ammo cycling properly. Thanks for posting this video..regards
Thanks for the post ! I'm glad I am not the only one with a problem putting the springs back in. Big fingers don't help. Excellent video and volume for explanation.
Mine does the exact same thing and has also been sitting forever because it seems because it pissed me off too many times. I use nothing but the factory mags. Thanks for the video and info. I'm ordering me an extractor. Since I already bought a 10/22, I'll pass this on off to the wife since she shooting now.
I used to have lite primer strikes with my 10/22. I took the firing pin out. Straightened it and sanded both sides smooth. Haven’t had a problem since. A lot of these parts are cheap stamped steel. Might want to check yours out.
I have no problems with my factory 10 round mag and Federal Champion 36 grain rounds. When I use my 30 round mags, they always jam. I've had a Volquartsen extractor on hand since 2021 in case I needed it but just this past month, I finally installed it after seeing several videos like yours. I'll test this soon with all my mags shortly. Also, apart from the large mag jamming, this rifle is dead on accurate.
I've got the same exact setup as yours, including magazines. Had a bad time with jamming, so I followed your advice and bought the Volquartsen extractor. Out of the box it was too thick to fit in the groove. So I sanded one side of the surface of the extractor with an emory finger board. Was still a tight fit but got it in okay. The problem I had was that it still jammed when I fired the shells one at a time, but on rapid fire went smoothly and emptied the 30 round clips without any mishap. I repeated this three times with both magazines loaded with up to 18 rounds each (clips won't take anymore than that), still the same scenario. I used unidentified off brand round tip 22LRs I had saved up and dumped all in a big box, but it seemed to improve with Winchester 22LR, 36 grain, hollow point copper plated. Will let you know in a few days how the Winchester ammo worked out for me. This is getting really frustrating.
Mine hardly jams but I heard that if you barely loosen the guide rod screws (the little ones on the back near where the hammer strikes) and since I started doing that I had no jams do to the gun. Yes mine is an old one
i had trouble till i started thinking of the mag as 25rd not 30rd and blazer 40gr ball points haven't jammed after 300rd or so not one problem but win 22lr were bad about 4James a magazine all and any light target round won't work at all my gun is off the shelf and no problems now
Hey man, great video! I have shot many of these rifles and I have ran into the same extracting issues myself. I used to use the Remington Gold Bullets but 36 grains was the issue for me. If you run 40 grain ammunition, the rifles run all day. CCI mini mags work like a charm if you can find them. Happy shooting!
I used a razor to shave the factory burrs and a bit of extra material on my 30 round. I noticed a huge difference and improvement immediately when loading the mag!
If I grab another mag (likely) Ill see what I can do! I suggest staying away from the clear 30 round mag too. Nothing but trouble in my experience. Properly lubed, they aren't so clear anyway!
I found out if you push the bolt forward or hold it forward it will shoot no matter what I'm about too order new springs. Bolts not going forward all the way.
...when I had Dennis the Menace's M-1 carbine, I changed his upside-down dual-mag set-up over to having both of them with the business end, feed-lip end facing upwards...I just had to add a small block spacer between the two..
Watched video (a few times), googled the part, ordered ($18 + S&H), installed- WOW! 500+\- rounds of win:rem:brow:cci- 1 F2E, 1 F2L, 2 MF- at 100yds, I'm at .377 MOA consistently at the bench, Next upgrade is the hammer and spring that gives < 4.5#'s
pretty easy. theres a good install vid here on YT. I didnt need it, seems pretty straight foreward. once you take the old one out you see how the new one goes in.
This was my first rifle I bought on my own 13 years ago. Bought it on a whim for very cheap brand new. First couple weeks I had it with 50 or less rds down range the extractor just disappeared during firing hah. I still have her though! Great vid btw!
I have the upgraded extractore. However I removed the hold open mechanism that holds the bolt open when empty, now I don't get james ever... But now operates like a rugar 10/22. Id love a hybrid of this with 10/22 that would be a perfict .22.
How long did you own your gun, & start experiencing problems? Any idea how many rounds through? I just bought a new one in Lloydminster, AB. They had a sale price marked on it, & I was looking for something with a little more impact than a 22 LR for shooting beavers. I wish you would have set up a target for grouping accuracy while doing this. I have shot through about 25 rounds, & was hitting more beavers with my Ruger. Might need to spend some more time dialing it in.
Ok everyone my 597 had the same problem and I went to my gun store that I bought it at. The guy who sold me the gun told me that we was surprise to hear the problems I was having with it cuz he sold a more than a couple and never heard bad feed back. Then he told me to clean my gun again VERY VERY well cuz the factory put some type of protective wax or something in the gun and that why he thinks that my gun is not working well. So I did clean the thing like I never cleaned anything before and now my 597 works like a charm I am amazed at how well it shoots I can shoot my two 30 round magazines without any jams now.
I have them same 30's rd mags, I got so aggravated i just stick with the 10 rd mags, though i keep the 30's with 27 in it, i can't get 30 in them, I'm hoping the rounds stored in the mag will fix the problem, in case its a mag spring, feed combo issue.
You said it Ammo Man freakin Remington is never gonna crawl out of the sewer if they keep on keepin on with issues like this! Pathetic! Nice job on the fix, well done 👍
I have had no issues with my remington597 16"bull barrel Up ttill now i have 14 bricks through mine and never a extraction problem, the last time i had it out the last shot would have what seems to be a feeding problem the last round would get bent and not feed into the throat barrel,i am going to take it apart and clean the 597 for the first time ever i think its a guide rod problem
Im gonna give this a try. This was my first gun and I would like it to be my little brothers first gun as well. It currently stove pipes most of the time, sometimes it kicks them halfway out and the bolt is stuck damn near fully open on the casing. I run Winchester rounds through it and never had a problem until after the first box of 550 rounds.
Your issue might be dirt or debris or it could be too much tension on the guide rods. Clean it, oil it and losen those set screws just a hair and try it again.
I did tge same thing mine had 1fte durring first mag w valquartsen extractor but been 100% through 0ver 500 rounds since not a single malfunction. Not even with weaker standard velocity ammo when its dirty. The first mag was with cci standard velocity ammo ,its subs sonic. All rounds where shot surpressed, so it got really dirty and wasnt super clean when i started other than the bolt face. Those 500+ rounds are the most ive fired consecutively though a surpressed rimfire without a malfunction.
My extractor blew off the bolt at the range one day...if u have problems getting the 30 rounders out...lock the bolt back by holdling the gun upside down ( so the lock back is up from gravity...then remove the mag.
Using the stock 10 round magazine and CCI Mini Mags, I haven't had any issues. With the Remington 30 round mag, I get a feed issue with the first and last round every time. Using the ProMag 22 round magazines, the bolt holds open on the second last round (leaving one round in the magazine after firing the second last round). I find semi autos problematic with the Remington Golden Bullets in general. The 597 is no less reliable nor less accurate than the 10/22 or Model 64. Nice fix with the new extractor, though. Thanks for the tip.
what about shooting subsonic ammo? mine jams with subs, ive sent for the extractor and new spring, just waiting for it to arrive, hope it solves my issue
I see some folks talking about how theirs runs fine. I think something to keep in mind is that manufactured components are almost never exactly the same. Even if they are for the same gun by the same machine. The parts are only as good as the sharpness or quality of tooling installed on the CNC machine, and the CNC machine is only as good as the human that programed it and calibrated it. The parts are only verified if the company spent adequate time to pay and train good QC people, which many of them do not. The current state of Remington is a bit of a sign, in my opinion, of the quality of its manufacturing and quality of management. Also, the ammunition has a massive impact on how well a weapon runs in spite of its flaws. If there are design flaws, such as the incredibly inadequate feed ramps, or wobbly follower in the magazine - poor ammunition will exploit those flaws, while higher powered quality ammunition will often power through. Bolt carrier speed slows down when the ammunition is lower powered, which means that it also moves with less urgency and less momentum, which results in less "oomf" to push the round into or out of the chamber. My 522 is a pile of dog shit, but runs CCI stangers pretty reliably, compared to the thunderbolts, which fail to feed every 2nd round chambered. Just my thoughts though.
Maybe 10+ yrs ago I was coaching a young boy with my 597 and the extractor blew off the bolt and grazed my cheek. I was standing maybe 15 ft behind and to the right. Remington sent me a whole new rifle. I still have a few jams
Hopefully you have clear lens covers LOL? I have this same gun and i put the arch angel stock kit on it and bought the rem 30 rounds mags. The main reason they have jamming problems is because the mags have weak springs.
Hello, I can't find that extractor on their online store anymore. Do they still sell them or is there another Canadian retailer that carries them? I can't find one anywhere!!
Ha I bought one from an auction and the thing was filthy inside and jammed. Also, the trigger group reminds me of the 870 Express, including the stiff trigger. I sold it and bought a CZ and never looked back lol. Nice looking rimfire u got there.
My issue is accuracy. At 50m, rested, CCI mini mags are the worst with about a three inch group. Eley Force 42 grain the best at around 1.5", which is still poor compared to my Henry underlever and CZ bolt action.
Love my 597. Never had a failure to feed or extracting issue out of the box. Put endless boxes of different ammunition through it. Im thinking they must have done some tweaking to the rifle over the last year or so.
My 597 came with 2 stock 10 rd mags and 2 each clear and blk 30 rounders. I had to CUT one of the black ones out and none of them would run. The stock 10s I've never had a problem with. I only plink or shoot whistle pigs with it so only getting 8 or 9 rounds loaded is a non-issue for me. I did the best modification to the 30 rd mags ever. They got tossed in the trash. Its accurate as hell and a fun shooter for me.
If i keep mine good and clean it works great but i bought those rem30 round clips and the springs keep breaking and 2 of them split at the feeding end. Is there any better built mags out there
My 597 was a 17HMR. They had a recall and I sent it in and had 22WMR barrel installed. Are the extractor's the same or can anyone say. Have not fired it yet. But need to know for fear of Zombies.
Had mine for many (over 15) years, does the same thing unless I only shoot CCI. Remington, federal, fail some, Winchester failing much. Gun is cleaned, and cared for. Will replace. Thanks!
i have 3 Remington 597 no issues except with the Remington ammo go figure, that's with all my Remingtons I have owned bolt action rifles and all, I received my first 597 when I was 16 and literally fell down a rocky mountain side in the vegas desert with it and it still works great and I just cleaned that rifle no shit 2 years when I was 28yo
I’ve pretty much done a complete overhaul on my 597 including a brand new trigger assembly among other things but for some reason when I shoot the gun it still either doesn’t eject the cartridge or the bullet gets stuck at the beginning of the barrel and doesn’t slide all the way in. I have thoroughly cleaned it 5 or 6 times and still jams or doesn’t eject, any ideas?
My dad randomly bought this gun and gave it to me out of nowhere yesterday so I’m researching things I can improve on it. Besides this extractor what other stuff do you all recommend? It’s basically stock right now.
Mine has no issues other than the mags do not reliably feed. Sometimes it sticks and requires you to slap the mag to get the next round to pop up. Other times it just doesn't pop up fast enough. I have 2 mags both have the same issues.
I personally have never had a FTF issue with the 30 rd mags. I usually just put in 25 rds though. Only thing i did was sand down the part that actually goes into the magwell for a better fit.
I have 2 597s, a standard and a VTR. Never had a problem with either unless I ran remington ammo through them. You can actually hear the difference in the shots with remington ammo.
I bought mine in summer 2017. Gray stock but- well. They must have upgraded the rifle. The R 597 is so reliable is almost boring to shoot on the range. The only issue I have is that I have no iron sights. A vermin utility-rifle should have some standard iron sights. But that is only my opinion. I asked a gunsmith to add some iron ones but this would come more expensive then I paid for the gun itself. That little rifle helpt out a lot shooting vermins on the yard. If someone lives in the country outside in the sticks, a 22lr is essential. I am very pleased with my Remington 597.
My 597 has feed issues, with Winchester, and Armscore ammo, stock 10 round clip and aftermarket 30 round clip I just bought, it has never an extraction issue...
+Mark Kerns. I second that, I've had mine for over a year and the only problem I've had was with Winchester ammo. I use Remington ammo, no issues with cycling and very good groups.
Mines the same way. I bought a ruger 10/22 and when my dad saw I was shooting it a lot he asked if I wanted to borrow his 597 that he bought for us as kids that we never shot because it was trash and always jammed. Childhood probably would've been a lot different if my dad would've bought a ruger
I've had nothing but problems with mine, so much so I stopped shooting it entirely. I almost gave it away (seriously, I had nothing but problems no matter how much I cleaned it, changed mags and ammo), until I found out you could replace the extractor. Now it's golden.
Mine was absolute trash. I could not get through a standard magazine without at least 5 malfunctions. Initially they claimed the new model mag would fix it, but it did absolutely nothing. Sold it and never regretted that decision. The only purchase I regretted more was the CZ 122 Sport. That turd misfired 8 times out of 10.
My 597VTR has sat in the closet for 3 years. Owned it for 5 now but after numerous frustrating outings I gave up. Just ordered the recommended extractor and sending my thanks to you for illuminating the issue. I KNOW it must work because seeing a 597 shoot Remington ammo is the ultimate test. I could never get more than 3-5 consecutive rounds down range when using namesake ammo. Thank you!! PS, get down here to FLA. It's not normal to be standing "on a lake". Water is always just that down here. lol
It will not stay open with the mag out of the gun if you close it after you take the mag out.you can hold the bolt open put your finger in the mag hole and push the lever up and the bolt will stay open
Hey Everybody! FYI! There is a Facebook Group for the Remington 597. It's easy to join. Hey, there is also a Facebook group for the Ruger 10-22 if you prefer that crowd. I joined both because I was undecided which rifle I would buy. It's funny that you can customize the 10-22 however you want, and some of them end up looking exactly like the 597.
never had any problems with mine, only issue is the magazines not accepting 10 rds. Rifle is accurate and shoots any ammo i put in it. i did modify guide rod springs and polish trigger. excellent rifle for the money
Has it worked in the long run? How many rounds have you shot with it since this video and how many failures? Thnx for the vid and good info. I'm thinking about the 597HB for my late christmas present. Have a great year!
The 597 was the first gun I ever bought, picked it up at WalMart in 1998 which was the first year this gun was manufactured. I cannot even begin to count how many rounds I have put through this gun in the past 23 years with virtually 0 notable malfunctions.
Wish I could say the same. Mines a jam-o-matic
I do keep the two rails for the bolt heavily oiled, not sure if that is the difference.@@Ghost-xi6js
@@Ghost-xi6jsi hate mine, i cant shoot a mag without half the mag jamming

They must have updated the rifle at somepoint. Ive owned one for a year, put over 1000 rounds through it, and never a failure. Great value.
+HerrMueller93 what ammo are you running?
Mini mags through all my .22
Same here, I've put over 2000 through mine, no problems. Excellent groups. Works like a champ!
@@NowellHolmes I haven't had any problems. I've used thunderbolt, mini mags and federal copper plated hollow rounds.

I have a Rem 597 and have never had the FTE issue. I shoot Federal or CCI ammo. No issues.
How easy was the new extractor to install at home?
How hard was the extractor swap?
How long did you own your gun, & start experiencing problems? Any idea how many rounds through? I just bought a new one in Lloydminster, AB. They had a sale price marked on it, & I was looking for something with a little more impact than a 22 LR for shooting beavers. I wish you would have set up a target for grouping accuracy while doing this. I have shot through about 25 rounds, & was hitting more beavers with my Ruger. Might need to spend some more time dialing it in.
I've got one and cleaned it as soon as I bought it and haven't had a problem with mine
Yeah I'll give that a look. Final question, what kind of bipod is that?
Tim Sharky Productions not sure , i got it a while ago
Can you please do a video on how to sand down the top of the 30 round magazine so they feed better
I have had no issues with my remington597 16"bull barrel
Up ttill now i have 14 bricks through mine and never a extraction problem, the last time i had it out the last shot would have what seems to be a feeding problem the last round would get bent and not feed into the throat barrel,i am going to take it apart and clean the 597 for the first time ever i think its a guide rod problem
Were you shooting on the lake?
Got a new 597 couple years ago dont use it jams up all the time, gonna have to change the extractor
Great info. Mine has the same failure to extract rate as yours. Will order the Volquartsen if I don't trade my 597 in first.
I've had the stock mag since I was 12 and never done a thing. It jams from time to time but if I would have took care or it who knows
I still have a few jams
how much dose the gun cost front the factory
Hopefully you have clear lens covers LOL? I have this same gun and i put the arch angel stock kit on it and bought the rem 30 rounds mags. The main reason they have jamming problems is because the mags have weak springs.
Hello, I can't find that extractor on their online store anymore. Do they still sell them or is there another Canadian retailer that carries them? I can't find one anywhere!!
misamisatv You should call the store that i mention in the video and ask.
Our youth shooting sports club has a few these. They are good encouragement for the kids to convince your parents to go buy them a good gun.
I own the same gun. Could you make a video on how to change the part?
Thanks for the tips Bro! I bought the gun yesterday and the extractor today before shooting with it.
If i keep mine good and clean it works great but i bought those rem30 round clips and the springs keep breaking and 2 of them split at the feeding end. Is there any better built mags out there
Where did you get your bipod from?
How did you install the new extractor?
My 597 was a 17HMR. They had a recall and I sent it in and had 22WMR barrel installed.
Are the extractor's the same or can anyone say. Have not fired it yet. But need to know
for fear of Zombies.
How long was it before the stock extractor went bad? And does the new one still work?
Could be a poorly manufactured barrel.
My dad randomly bought this gun and gave it to me out of nowhere yesterday so I’m researching things I can improve on it. Besides this extractor what other stuff do you all recommend? It’s basically stock right now.
installed the Volquartsen Extractor. Works great, thanks filthyrich!
I have 2 of them and shot countless rounds through both and have never had an issue
Mine has been nothing but issues for the past 12 years idk why I keep this POS
Mine has no issues other than the mags do not reliably feed. Sometimes it sticks and requires you to slap the mag to get the next round to pop up. Other times it just doesn't pop up fast enough. I have 2 mags both have the same issues.
Mine works great to I got for Christmas a while back and the first time I shot it I fired 100 rounds through it and it only failed to extract once.
Great video! Bought one right after. How do you get your 30rnd mags to work right? Mine FTF the first 5 or so
I personally have never had a FTF issue with the 30 rd mags. I usually just put in 25 rds though. Only thing i did was sand down the part that actually goes into the magwell for a better fit.
Cool I'll have to try both those
I have 2 597s, a standard and a VTR. Never had a problem with either unless I ran remington ammo through them. You can actually hear the difference in the shots with remington ammo.
Same here. The only issues I've had with the 597 were with Remington Golden Bullets....and the odd Winchester Double X.
Will the same extractor work on a model 597 Magnum? (.22 cal magnum).
Mine only jams with cheap bullets never had and problems with Remington golden bullets or Winchester’s or any other name brand bullets
I think you got a lemon my friend....mine is flawless in extraction.
+Mark Kerns. I second that, I've had mine for over a year and the only problem I've had was with Winchester ammo. I use Remington ammo, no issues with cycling and very good groups.
+Mark Kerns
-I believe mine was from an early production run and changes were made after to improve reliability. I think i got it in 2006.
Water is always just that down here. lol
So on mine the bolt doesn’t stay open when mag is out what’s broke on it ??
Remington ammo is the worst you can buy, CCI .
