  • The Cold Steel Luzon is an awesome, imposing knife from one of my favorite knife companies. But please watch out for these possible issues when you purchase a Luzon.

Good review. Thoughtful. I have been thinking of getting one of these and your observations are of value to me. I have had trouble with sticky liner locks with other knives of various manufacturers and a tiny bit of lubricant and a bit of "working in" made all the difference on the sticky ones. Thanks for the review.

if you want to adjust the pivot it takes a number 8 torx wrench. mine is very hard to open and close but it is getting a bit easier the more i use it. good video.

My outer flipper tab is so stiff! I can’t even hardly flip it out! When I click the liner lock to close the nice I hear a crunching/clicking sound. The action is so stiff and it sounds/feels like parts are grinding. Not a smooth action like many other Luzons. Guy at the shop said that it just needs broken in but I’m going to try and get a replacement tomorrow

My model in Large doesn’t have a stiff detent and while rummaging in my drawer knocked the cross guard, opening it slightly, and yeah nicked myself. In terms of quality (I have 6-7 almost all Mediums), detents vary from stiff to almost nonexistent. Lock engagement varies from just barely fully seated across the leaf spring to halfway across the tang. I shook one medium open aggressively and had to use a quarter to unstick it, it seated so deeply. On all my samples there is a final rise on the tang to prevent overshooting. This new liner lock is also used on the 1911 and Crawford one and they have the same variations. Finally, the safety slide varies from sample to sample - some will maintain 100% contact, albeit right on the edge of the tang, some only maintain 75% contact.
In short they all lock up safely but how deep the seat, beyond the natural minimum 100% contact, varies.
Joe X destruction tests a variety of knives and both the 6” Luzon and 3.5” Crawford 1 passed the severe spine whack portion of his test cycle without collapsing onto his fingers and also continuing to unlock and lock. He did not engage the safety slider.
I do think the more robust leaf spring on the Ti Lite is better though.
The biggest problem I have with the Luzon is preventing accidental opening. I’m forced to loose carry. I use two soft style elastic scrunchy hair bands, one loop tied to the other. One have of the now double circle wraps around handle, the other flaps loose for easy grab and release. In my jurisdiction there is no limit on folding knife sizes, fortunately.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience. Very appreciated and I am glad to see that out of the ones you have they are all generally good albeit with some variation.

@@NoBiasPolitics thank you, for getting a video out out there about these manufacturing variations. Especially, on current models with no significant detent, finger flipping them open lazily or half-heartedly, will reduce the depth of the lock-up. I almost would recommend owner's to add a flip or flourish to ensure a solid lockup. And then try to add the safety lock, where circumstances permit.
What I really love, is 4" of not-too thick or too-tall blade in a narrow package only costing 3.2 ounces. That and the pocket clip doesn't destroy pockets. A drop point might be less off-putting when slicing a submarine sandwich, but you can't have everything! 😄

Ok, sorry for so many posts, but a couple days ago a stone washed, OD green handle, Luzon 4” arrived and here are some observations:
    1. Generic Cold Steel carton, shared with all 4” Luzon color ways and also with all 4” Ti Lites (at least with my recent black one). Product identification is via white stick-on label on carton end. So no picture or measurements on front of carton.
    2. I couldn’t thumbstud flick this open, too stiff.
    3. The army green is handles and liners (including the portion of liners visible inside the handle). Only screws and axles are shiny steel.
    4. Blade is stone wash not brightly polished which was a big surprise. Really tones it down.
    5. Blade tip is definitely short enough so rubbing a finger tip over the end of the channel won’t nick you.
    6. Average sharpness. Edge felt ever so slightly rolled over, but cut copy paper smoothly, but curled the paper edge slightly. Stropping got rid of the rolled over feeling but no improvement in paper cutting smoothness. I am admittedly demanding. My chef’s knife pro sharpener is good at putting on 17 degrees smooth glossy (not mirror finish) edges so it will be next in line at his mobile service.
As I mentioned I could not thumbstud flick it open (flipper no problem) but I think my thumb pad is just getting too beat up; when I tried to flick the black version from two weeks ago I couldn’t get it to move, whereas when it first arrived I could.
I think in terms of opening, this is the best tuned so far. I can actually feel the detent, but it’s not stiff per se.
In terms of lock up, it matches most of the GSM revised Cold Steel logo I’ve been stocking up on the past 8 months: leaf spring seats in just enough for 100% coverage of its edge, but not deeper, and fairly consistent on lockup regardless of energy of the flipper tab flip. Lazy or snappy, for me it’s 100% seated and seldom more, never less.
With respect to the safety, when I apply the safety then try to unlock the leaf spring without first disengaging, I can slide the leaf spring half off the blade tang, which is more than I hoped for. On some of my samples, about a third, the quality control is sufficient to keep the leaf spring 100% aligned with the edge of the blade tang.
One might say this is an excellent design with an excellent steel, but CS should figure out why the safety slider is so variable in effectiveness. Otherwise quality control is high, but slightly below visible fit and finish compared to Spyderco’s China factory liner locks. (I say “visible” QC because Joe X tested one Spyderco liner lock and two Cold Steels - each this design, not the earlier Ti Lite design - to destruction, and the liner locks did not unintentionally close on the CS but failed on the Spydie. (Joe X did not use the safety slider on either CS.)
For the time being I second your recommendation that purchasers of Luzons, and, by extension, 1911 and Crawford 1, make sure that even a weak opening seats the leaf spring 100% minimum (ok maybe reserve judgment if at first it doesn’t , in case it needs break-in).
In finale - ain’t no other 4” folder only weighing 3.2 oz. Make sure the lightly tensioned pocket clip doesn’t allow the blade edge to gap out from pocket seam.

Thanks very much for the comment again. Good advice to double check the leaf spring especially since you see some differences from sample to sample (and have far more experience with the Luzon than me). But yes I agree the weight to blade ratio, for both medium and large is great. Not to mention the amazing price. I do love the tri ad lock but at the price point with the safety the Luzon is great.
I appreciate your input and time. I am sure it will be helpful to others as well.

Not thumb studs. Those are external stop pins. If you look on the front part of the knife, there are two recessed area's for those to pins to rest in.

Sorry to hear this. I have not had to deal with Cold Steel’s customer service since the change over. You contacted them and they refused to replace or give you an offer to purchase? Thanks for your comment.
