    I just came across this post.
    I had no reason whatsoever to stop and look at this.
    Then I realized and this is no joke.
    I have a 597. I bought it about 17 years ago. For my daughter. Long story short she was only 5 at the time and the intention was to introduce her to shooting sports.
    But soccer and softball practices and those games always put those intentions on the back burner.
    I realized that I have this 597 still new in the box...
    Sitting in the gun safe untouched.
    Never got her interested in firearms.
    Fishing, archery, kayaking and hiking were her passion.
    Still is. The kid is a banker know.
    I told her I still have that rifle.
    Were going to try it out this Sunday with her boyfriend. Thanks for reminding me.

    Right on thanks again for the expertise. I just started shooting so I'm looking for a nice 22 that will last a long time. I'm leaning towards the browning semi auto 22. But trying to do as much research as I can before purchasing. So videos like yours really help a lot. That 597 sure unloads that magazine quickly in the first part of the video..!

    i just fired mine today for the first time using the remington bulk dirty golden bullet i purchaced 4 magazine on line from keepshooting.com, i polished the guide rods and raceway of the bolt and free floated the barrel by cutting out 2 shims from a credit card and viola!! 250 rounds and it didnt stove pipe jam or hicup once..i am very pleased with my purchase it was the best 199$ ever spent on a rifle,and i thought my savage 64 was all that but it couldnt hold a candle to the remington 597, i also fired a ruger 10/22 from the guy next to me and it was okay but my remington felt more balanced than the ruger. its now my all time favorite .22lr rifle. thanks for your well illustrated video.

  • @seejay9819

    I own this same model and straight out of the box accuracy for me was excellent, bullets through the same hole at 50 yards using Remington thunderbolt ammo. The only hiccup I experienced was the mag was stiff and wouldn't load the full capacity, about 7 of the 10 at first and throughout the course of 500 rds that day it had broken in beautifully.
    Side note: alot of people compare this rfile to the 10/22. and in my opinion is pretty well matched with accuracy and durability, one plus the 597 has is the double guide rod. However if you are looking to purchase a .22 rifle the versatility in parts and upgrades for the 10/22 is unmatched, although I believe with the popularity the 597 has been getting parts and upgrades will only continue to become more available.

    i just came across your channel, good video, thanks. i always did kind of like the 597. i would have gotten one, but i got a 10/22 instead...guess i listened too much to the bad reports about the remingtons. but, oh well...good to know remington has corrected their mistakes. i might just get one next. and as always:
    semper fi, carry on!!

    Thanks for the great video upload. I was thinking of getting the Remington 597 but wondered how it was against the Ruger 10/22. I like Ruger but I like this rifle as well. I really like the fact that Factory Mag's are around $20. I just ordered an extra magazine clip for the Weatherby I have but dang, $35.00 for a 10 round Mag, that's made by a 3rd party manufacturer and on a waiting list sucks, whereas the Remington Mag's are everywhere. You can't beat the price. I should buy 2 at the $214.00 price tag.....
    Thanks again for the video review. You really helped me out a lot...

    7 year old video and it just came up in my recommended.
    I bought a 597 used from Cabelas. $160 $CAD at the beginning of 2020.
    The rifle was barely used. The scope looked like it was mounted for a kid. Once I remounted it I could only hit the edge of the paper at 15 yards while aiming at the bullseye. I think kiddo must have dropped it or it was poorly mounted and/or adjusted. The sight picture didn't focus well. I used my Browning rebate to buy a cheap Simmons scope and this rifle shoots great. It looks like the same model you show with the grey stock. I drilled for sling eyelets no problem.
    The only thing I noticed is while taking the action springs in and out for cleaning, one of the springs is a bit bent when its out of the rifle. Still works fine. I have a spare set of action springs just in case. Glad I bought them before Remington went belly up.

    Only thing I noticed wrong with mine is the fit of the 25 round magazine, they're very tight, and they are pretty hard to remove. Mind you I bought my 597 at a garage sale, and it's one of the older models. Just incase any one else has run into this problem, I fixed this by grinding the part of the magazine where the magazine slides into the receiver using dremel with a rough sand paper wheel. It works much better now but be careful not sand it down to much, and possibly have a sloppy fit.

    I love the 597s. Out of the box they are hands down, better made than my 10/22s. The dual rail feature makes a big difference. My only complaint, which I'm sure you've heard from many others, is the factory magazine capacity limitation. However, based on feedback from some of your other respondents, I am hopeful that I can successfully modify my mags to accommodate ten rounds. Great video!

    I have a similar model with iron sights. Note, these rifles are bought in bulk by big sporting goods store chains like Dick's Sporting Goods, Cabela's, Academy Sports, , Bass Pro Shops, and others. Sometimes, these rifles have been in storage for 4 years before being sold to the end user! This causes factory lubricants to dry out and get sticky over time, causing malfunctions. DO NOT FIRE RIFLE STRAIGHT FROM THE BOX. Disassemble rifle and apply fresh lubricant to moving parts first. Just a small amount to let parts work freely. Clean out barrel with Hoppe's No. 9 bore solvent or other cleaner. Reassemble rifle, then fire it. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN TINY SCREWS THAT HOLD GUIDE RODS IN. Tighten screws just enough to touch guide rods. If too tight, rods will bend inside rifle and cause bolt cycling malfunctions as bolt drags along bent portions of rods. Use a miniature torgue wrench as factory manual advises to be absolutely sure. Wheeler Engineering F.A.T. torque wrench for about $55 will do the job. But is delicate, Only use for final tightening, do not use to unscrew screws or internal parts of torque wrench may break. Use ordinary hex key wrench of proper size for unscrewing. Also, use latest issue Remington 10 shot metal magazine with number "!0" inside a small circle for best function. Remington 30 shot magazines in black can be used. But mainspring of magazine may need to be stretched slightly for improved feeding. The ADCO Sales ST4 "Super Thumb" magazine loader for the Ruger 10/22 can be used to load 30 shot 597 magazines. But it fits VERY LOOSELY. Takes practice to keep it centered when applying "down and back motion" to load cartridges. Needs some kind of spacer to "take up slack" of loose fit. It will "save your thumbs". Faster than loading with fingers alone. Gets the last two shots into magazine when spring pressure is at maximum. Get more use out of your 597 rifle. "Fine tune" your rifle with "target hammer" and improved extractor from Volquartsen. JardInc. makes target fire control housings for improved target grade trigger pull. Jarvis makes target quality barrels for the 597.

    From all the problems I read about the mags and extractor I decided to check it out for myself. I bought the 597 AAC sd and out of the box it is fantastic. I did myself a favor though and removed the extractor and used rem oil inside where the extractor spring is and put it back. The mag I found is only able to load 8... That is until I took it apart and reversed the spring and used a bit of rem oil on it and just like that 10 with no problem at all. No jams or failure to feed at all. Same with the 30 rd black mag for it and no problems at all. Now it could be that because Remington made a few different things to upgrade it but I honestly think proper care and maintenance is the key to having a good reliable gun and hands down I think Remington made just that. Oh and I almost forgot to mention I took the guide rails out and oiled them as well. Accurate and functions the way I want it. Just in case anyone on here is wondering, I have no experience with the 10/22 and I know everyone has a strong personal opinion about certain brands but I must say I have only positive feedback for the 597 and I think if anyone is looking to get a new 22 this is a great gun to get or at least try.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I got my 597 the AAC didn't exist but I did recently just get mine threaded. I agree as long as the newest mags are being used then there are no reliability issues. All of my mags would only load 8 rounds so I simply took a screwdriver and forced the follower all the way down a few times and they work like a charm. I had a recent request about full breakdown and cleaning of the 597 so I'll probably talk about the factory over torqued guide rails causing binding. My bolt had a slight bind in it near the rear of it's travel but it was only an issue when dirty. After retorquing the rails much lighter the bolt is like silk. Thanks for watching.

    • @charleslemak2173
      @charleslemak2173 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick A Thanks for explaining how to fix the mag. I have two 597's in 22 LR, and on in 22 mag, I've replaced the hammers which resulted in a crisp 2.5 lb pull. The only negative is the magazines. I have never come close to getting 10 in the LR and I usually only get 6 to fit in the magnum. I plan to try what you did with the springs. If that doesn't work I may try cutting one turn off a spring and see how it works. Thanks again.

I sent it back to Remington, got it back and took it to the range again. This time it did a little better, around 30 shots and the trigger stopped again. Kinda disappointed in the quality but maybe I was just unlucky and bought the one that wasn’t well made

    I've had one since the late 90's. Only a few minor issues with them. As long as I load the mag with 9 instead of 10 it won't jam/have feed issues and the hold open spring constantly gets disconnected, finally just left it off.
    its a great rifle for the money though and mine is tack driver accurate with federal bullets.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      paintball god Well first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY! OK, the 597 is a good rifle but let me run through a few different options for you to give you some choices that are similar/less in price. The 597 is super accurate with cheap ammo and also reliable with very few jams unless you're doing something stupid (see my low power 22 video for an example of jams due to being stupid). I'm not sure how tall you are but the 597 has a full size stock and is not light so shoulder one to see if it fits you before buying price was $200ish and included a decent scope. Marlin Model 60 is just as accurate/reliable as the 597, has classic styling, and is tube fed (holds about 14 rounds) so you'll never have to buy extra mags. The Model 60's stock is slightly smaller but still not a light weight and can be had for about $160. The Marlin 795 is a mag fed and lighter version of the Marlin Model 60 is it'll be just as accurate, has a black composite stock that's very light and a little smaller that the 60 priced about $130-$140. The Ruger 10/22 is not as accurate as those listed above and is about the same weight as the Marlin Model 60. While not a tack driver out of the box there is a huge aftermarket for barrels, stock, sights, etc. The Ruger 10/22 also is the only one that has an ultra reliable high capacity magazine that really works. These go for about $210 but will have bad stock sights and is not as accurate out of the box. I recommend any of these but put the Marlin 60 and the Remington 597 at the top of the list so shoulder both along with the Marlin 795 and see what feels best. FYI - Do not buy a Savage model 64 no matter how cheap they are selling them. They are that cheap because they can't give them away for a reason...horrible accuracy. If you want something different for about $300 you can get a Henry lever action 22 and it's super accurate and will shoot normal 22 and 22shorts. If you want cheap but great accuracy the Savage Mark 2 bolt action 22 rifle shoots better than I can on most days all for about $130. Let me know what you get and shoot safe.

      I do still have this rifle and it's one of my favorite 22s. I have many firearms chambered in 22 and just put up a new playlist on my main page that has all my 22 videos including many 22 rifle reviews. I bought this one back in 2013 at Walmart for $200 and it came with the 3-9 scope that I still have on it today. Below are links to two other videos of mine that deal with the Remington 597. Thanks for watching.

      Thank you very much for answering . I like the the look and the grip of the style of the rifle and next year hopefully I will get his Big Brother centre fire to go hunting and target shooting on a long range

    I swear to god, I will never buy another Remington firearm. I got my .22 lr just like yours here, and the retractor lever felt off after the 2nd shot. I sent it back to Remington two weeks ago. I haven't heard anything from them since then. One of the worst customer service system in firearm industry, I believe.

      I got mine from Walmart for about $200 and that included the scope. If you can find the regular version it'd probably be a little cheaper.

    I’m a 12 year old and what 22 Remington is the best?

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best 22 from Remington is the FieldMaster but it's super expensive for a 22. If you're looking for your first 22 rifle I'd suggest looking at the Savage Arms Mark 2 bolt action. Super cheap, well made, and accurate.

    WE all know that this rifle needs a new extractor upon purchase .

      So far as long as I stick with factory 10rd mags it runs like a scalded dog. I've been told that my issues with the extended mags would be solved with a Volquartsen extractor.

      I don't think such a beast was ever made and if it was at one point I can't find anything now. FYI - I tested the regular .22LR version of the 597 extended mags and could not get them to be reliable.

      Look at Remington's website. They call it a, "Last shot hold open" and they manufactured the thing but I guess you can call it whatever you want.

      Ha! When I started TH-cam everyone told me I needed an intro so I made this. I then started getting copyright notices from some shady porn studio regarding the music so I dropped the intro and never looked back. Thanks for watching and yes the intro died several years ago.

      Also great work with the Deuce. Had a M38C for almost 20 years and was a honorary member of the local 82nd Airborne Chapter. Sold the jeep as I am retired now. Voice only should be fine for your videos. Also subscribed. Later
