      +Dalton Duckett you can find type 53's(model 44 carbine but chinese made) for 170ish. that comes with the flip out spike bayonet and original strap. they are 8 inches give or take shorter but are every bit as fun.

    Got my 1933 hex receiver mosin for $200 in damn near perfect condition. No modifications done to it and can accurately hit a 15"x15" target at 600 yards with irons. Great rifle.

      +1, The prices of these rifles has gone up but it is still outstanding value. I bought mine back in 2008 for 80 bucks at Big 5 and it has the smoothest operating bolt I could ask for.

    • @Shane-Singleton
      @Shane-Singleton 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My mosin isn't my smoothest bolt but that honor is held by my Springfield 1898 Krag. The mosin, however, cost 1/5 the price and ammo is FAR cheaper.

    • @Hibernicus1968
      @Hibernicus1968 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why? I shot one once, and that removed any desire I ever had to own one. It's decently accurate, but so is my 98 Mauser and so is my SMLE, only more so, and both are a LOT more fun to shoot. The Mosin's ergonomics suck like a Hoover on steroids. The safety is difficult and inconvenient to use, and the bolt handle is poorly placed -- notice how the shooter in this vid has to take it off his shoulder to cycle it? The ONLY thing it has over other milsurp bolt guns is cheap ammo.

    • @Shane-Singleton
      @Shane-Singleton 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought it was aptly explained that the cost of the weapon and the cost of ammo were the major attractions. Perhaps it wasn't stated so clearly. If it wasn't, I apologize. But that is why everybody should own one.

    "There are so many mosins out there!"
    Reminds me of the petrified forest...
    There was so much petrified wood everywhere that people would freely pick up souvenirs. It looked like a sea of crystal and there were no restrictions on it!
    So over the years more and more people picked them up and eventually...the sea of crystal began losing its shine.
    So they decided to make it illegal to take the pieces without buying from a federally licensed vendor. That was fine but more people kept buying and the demand rose, and more people kept stealing the stones regardless of the law.
    If you look at the petrified forest today its not very impressive at all. I know, I've been there. Its difficult to get your hand on a sizable piece of petrified wood now, and the splendor of the natural wonder is found only in history books and old videos.
    Don't let the mosin become another petrified forest. It will only be cheap and available if we keep them original and available (looking at you guys who hoard up 20 rifles at a time) that way everybody can enjoy this fine and historic firearm.

    • @austinpowers2033
      @austinpowers2033 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I completely agree, why do you need 5-20 of the exact same rifle?

    • @Warhamer116
      @Warhamer116 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The difference between petrified wood and Moshin is that petrified wood takes ages to form and shape. If moshin gets to hgih enough demand, some gun factory can crank the automatics to moshin mold print, and band off goes few hundred (thousand) mosins. Bam no shortage anymore.

    • @bulbinking
      @bulbinking 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Warhamer116
      Except that would never happen, and even if it did replica =/= original.

    • @VechsDavion
      @VechsDavion 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with your logic there is that your wood was laying around the environment. For the Mosin, they are already in possession of humans, and then get transferred to other humans. :)

    • @bulbinking
      @bulbinking 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      Sorry, but that doesn't change anything.
      The point is there are a finite number of mosins, and just because its a LARGE finite number doesn't mean people should destroy these rifles faster than they would if there weren't so many.

    I think you were wrong about your prediction that mosins wouldn't increase in value. This video is called the $100 30-06. Has anyone seen a mosin for $100 lately?

    • @MikeGusFifteen
      @MikeGusFifteen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was three years ago, when you could go to gun shows and find them for $100 stacked in wooden crates lol. I'm looking to buy one; can't find them much cheaper than $150. Still worth it.

    • @lannybrown915
      @lannybrown915 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in KY and Mosins sell quick for 150 . You have to fight people off to buy em first on gun sights or FB groups . They are just going to keep going up in value , especially if people keep sporterizing them . The German K98 was once nearly as plentiful they are 500-1500 guns now in military configuration .

    • @albrechtshnoodle1128
      @albrechtshnoodle1128 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lanny Brown In Minnesota you can buy them for $125. haven't checked online but now that the latest gun ban scare is over they'll likely decrease bit by bit.

    If you go to a high end retailer or scalping local gun shop you will pay out the nose. Get a C&R FFL and get them for near 1/2 price. I own 25+ Mosins, 12+ Mausers and various semiautos and can without reservation say that if you are selective on bore size and bore condition, the Mosin is very competetive in producing precision groups...partly due to the long sight radius when using open sights. Having many ammo variants also maximizes your chances to find that 1-1.5 moa Mosin.

  • @bigchunk1
    @bigchunk1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This video made me decide to be a TNPer. Good advice about the mosin "Do what you want with it to get enjoyment out of it." Each one is one of a kind, but there are so many of them I don't think we are going to hurt history if we want to mod them. I refinished mine, but kept its original configuration. Nice and clean looking. Really happy with it. Paid $160 for mine, but I wouldn't sell it for $300.

  • @christianjobes5571
    @christianjobes5571 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    i hear alot of people complaining about the mosin's recoil. i had no clue what they were talking about until i bought one. first shot hurt. after the first shot i had to take my wool hat off and use it as a improvised recoil pad. later i spent about 50 dollars on a mp91 fast lock brake and let me say that was money well spent. that muzzle brake deserves its five star rating.

    Sadly, your predictions on the cost turned out to be wrong. They go for around $200 now. Laminated stocks $220-230. Sad. I remember when I was 7 they were going for $99 at Dunham's sports, and they frequently had 20 on the shelf plus more in the back, presumably. That was back in 2000.

      Also have to think about the recent gun scare every gun went up in value rather it be a Mosin Nagant or a Custom Kreb's AK, and as long as people are willing to pay for that they will continue to stay at the 200 dollar range

    Really enjoyed your video. I have 3 myself. A 1941 (refinished), an M44 made in 45 (refinished) and a 1933 hex that I've kept stock since its in really good condition. When I refinish a stock, I strip the finish off, hand sand with fine paper. If I stain, I use one coat of Minwax mahogony, then over a week, I put on abou 5 to 10 layers of linseed oil. I seal it with beeswax. I also did my Ruger 10/22 and an M1 Carbine stock to match my Mosins.

    Bought one at big 5 in 2005 for 89, and I was mad they had just jacked up the price $10. Now they sell them for roughly $180. kicking myself for not buying another one, probably the m44, at that price.

      If you want a M44 there is always the Chinese Type 53 which is the same as the M44 but just Chinese lol and its 100 dollars cheaper :) my first rifle and project because the cosmoline inside of it xc but keep in mind you might not get lucky on the stock. The Chinese stocks are so shitty sometimes; but I got lucky with mine.

    Just bought one of these two weeks ago for $230. It's a 1943 make. I had to have the extractor ground down a little bit to get the bolt to close properly but it shoots beautifully now. As long as you religiously clean it after shooting corrosive ammo it's definitely my favorite firearm to shoot hands down.

      @mcxxdyminds 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I just got one last week for $215, 1942 Izzy model. All matching numbers except for the bayonet, and a very clean stock. Only work I had to do was obviously clean it and I had to grind the inside of the bayonet for it to fit. But it is a great gun and very fun to shoot!

    To remove cosmoline from a newly bought rifle. I used a 3 1/2 inch or 4 inch pvc pipe about 6 inches longer then the rifle barrel (removed from stock, just barrel assy.) Then I put an end cap on one end and placed barrel with a wire attached (used to pull barrel out), in pipe and filled with "mineral spirits" or "paint thinner". Let it sit for an 1/2 hour, remove from pipe and scrub with old tooth brushes. Repeat if necessary. A lot of elbow grease with pay off. I will add pics of rifle to my youtube channel. Love your reviews. Be safe and keep shooting. Paul

    Cool old German guy just gave me a hundred rounds of 7.62x54r for free today. I have been eyeballing the Nagant for a while and now that I have it's ammo.... do the math... this has been a great video for someone like me to watch. One thing I like about sporting out the Mosin, cost/value wise, is that the 700 hundred dollars you put into it is 700 you don't have to spend all at once. And the ammo at it's cost will allow this old system to pay for itself no matter how much money you throw at it :)

    • @whisperchainsaw102
      @whisperchainsaw102 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Its for semi experienced shooters. You should be comfortable with guns enough to be ok with muscling a bolt if you have to and not be afraid of recoil. Get a .22 first, then a .12 guage, then a mosin.

      ***** As a shooter and hunter you will most likely use a a 12 gauge shotgun more than a mosin. In my experience with a friends mosin it was a gun that would have been hard to handle as a new shooter. Also it only took me one round to get used to the recoil because of my experience with 12 gauge shotguns which have worse recoil.

    Lets see here. The 30-06 Springfield is 7.62X64 then the 7.62X54R and the the 308 Winchester is 7.62X51. So the 30-06 case is 64 mm long the 7.62X54R case is 54 mm long and the 308 Winchester case is 51 mm long. Having experience shooting and loading all three cases the 7.62X54R falls over the 308 Winchester and under the 30-06.

    Yeah, this is a good rifle, but it's overrated like hell. It's really not that accurate for a bolt action rifle, and the other 3 WWII-famous bolt-actions are all generally better rifles. The Arisaka Type 99 is extremely accurate, and has a much more power 7.7x58mm round. The Mauser Kar98 is just as accurate as the Arisaka, and fires a 7.92x57mm round (8mm Mauser). The Springfield M1903a4 is about as accurate as the Mosin, but fires a 7.62x63mm round (30-06) You can find Arisaka's for around $200, and Kar98's for around $260-$300. Both rifles are far more accurate, both are certainly more durable, and both cost little to no more than the Mosin, as now, the Mosion costs closer to $250 to buy. The Arisaka would be the most reliable rifle, here. Those rifles can handle upwards of 300% more chamber pressure than their supposed to be firing, and still be left in perfect condition. Overload a Mosin by 300%, and you better plan on living life with no hands, and completely blind.

      Gun shows. I'm sure internet prices are going to be jacked, but if you meet real people in real life, and actually use the rifles, you will see that you can buy these rifles for these prices, and get said results (considering the gun is in good condition)

      Then what are you talking, my friend? The accuracy? Test fire the rifles for yourself! Hell, test fire the Mosin against the cheapest 1950's Winchester M70 rifle, and even that's a million times more accurate. From a realistic stand point, the mosin isn't the magical nail-driver people think it is. Yeah, it's a good gun. But does it live up too the hype? Not from what I see. It's too long, heavy and clumsy, and too poor accuracy. If I have a rifle that long, I want it doing better groupings than 1moa. At that, you can put the much shorter Arisaka Type 99 against the Mosin, and it's more accurate, weighs less, and isn't as long. Maybe you were talking about the 300% overload in the Arisaka? Some guy did tests on it, and wrote books about doing it. He finally got it too 300% more chamber pressure than standard, and then called it quits, because there was no way someone could be dumb enough to overload a round 300%. To validate that, Iraqveteran did their own test video, and prove it is not a load of BS. Yes, the bolt was extremely hard to open, and needed to be beat open with a hammer, but the rifle was fine afterwards. Extractor was fine, firing pin as fine, chamber was fine, you name it. You couldn't even tell that it was just overloaded by 300%.

    • @AirForceAce3571

      I think the big difference is the value factor for each rifle relative to the competition. Mosins are super affordable (aroune $160 these days) AND the ammo is super affordable. There's not a modern bolt gun that can equal that performance and value, especially on the ammo. As for the SKS, for the price I see them going for ($450ish) you can pretty much get a WASR-10 or NPAP AK that fires the same round, but has more capacity, is more compact and is easier to load/reload. When SKSs used to be areound 250-300 they had a big advantage, but prices have leveled out giving advantage to the WASR and NPAP. I believe that's why Nutn is more enthused about the Mosin than the SKS which he does like but not as much. But that may change too if Mosin prices keep climbing...

      I agree with you for the most part. I have shot both the SKS and the Mosin a lot, and I think they are both really nice rifles for the money. I like the SKS more because you don't have to rely on the bayonet for good accuracy.
      That being said, the SKS has its flaws too. Semi-automatic rifles in general are more picky about ammunition. The one that I shot stove piped live rounds quite frequently. I think the Mosin Nagant would be a better rifle in this instance.

    Shut up all you one skidded trolls!! For 100-200 dollars you get ALOT for your money. Can't even think of another gun in 20years in this industry that works that u can get for a hundred dollars. Are there better weapons out there? Of course!!! The mosin Is NOT the best thing since sliced bread but for the price it's hard to beat! On another note I can shoot a mosin all day and not spend over 80bucks in ammo. Can't even fire 22s all day for that cheap with the price on 22s these days. To each is own people! If you don't like them than don't buy one?! Don't bash people that are new to shooting about how Shitty there rifle is! Making gun enthusiast look bad by doing so and might drive new shooters to stray from advancing there skills. With that said what is up with the bolt handle around the 3:20 mark? Maby it's my old eyes but the handle looks as if it is up a little bit instead of being at a 90 degrees? Idk just stood out to me and was wondering if anyone else has one that is like that as I've never seen one? But like I said could be my eye sight

    I got pretty lucky I love mine it is a 1943, and was able to confirm that it was most likely used in the retaking of Leningrad, but I know it was used in the war without a doubt, it had use, and showed marks, also has a trigger with no play, and a low lb weight pull. It is clear that who ever used mine in WW2 took very good care of it, and did a trigger job on it, the tool marks were very clear.I bought it before it was even unwrapped.

Was able to place my shots within 2-3 ft of that plate using the open sights and surplus ball ammo! I was impressed with it. I have a full battery of Russian arms now....91/30 M/N; 91/30 Sniper; M38; SVT40; PPS43c; 1938 dated TT33 and a 1933 dated Nagant revolver. All of them FUN!!!

In fact, while it may not even be close to the "BEST RIFLE EVERRR", it is certainly a contender (if not #1) in the category of "most cost-effective" guns available. And honestly? Bought my first one in 1966 for 12 bucks out of the back of a NRA American Rifleman magazine. Ammo was 5 bucks per 100. Took 2 buck deer with it in 30 mins. the first time I took it hunting. Had to dum-dum the ammo as no hunting rounds to be had in my little town back then. Burned a lot of ammo through this jewel before Uncle Sam gave me my own M-16 to play with.

    The 147gr SP ammo for the 7.62x54r is great for White-Tailed Deer. I've taken a nice Kansas White-Tail with a Mosin and it did a great job. My biggest complaint on the Mosin is the 90' bolt. It gets caught on everything and when it flips up, you can't fire it. If you read battlefield reports this was a fairly common occurrence and you can see this problem is a couple of scenes from Enemy At The Gates and Stalingrad. But a great, low-budget, WWII collectible rifle.

    You can go into just about any larger gun store and find them. Remember, just because the tag says it costs $185 doesn't mean you cant walk out with it for $100. Always deal. My rule of thumb is try cutting the tag price by 20% and then negotiate from there.

Chopped the stock, mounted an optic directly on the barrel giving me use of the irons, $5 butt pad and $20 bipod and I have myself a fine scout carbine that shoots 1.25" groups consistently at 100 yards. That is hard to do with a modern bolt gun. $239 and I'm in centerfire business for less than a 10/22. Outstanding

    Just a heads up not all Mosin Nagant rifles will have a sticky bolt only due to cosmoline. Bent firing pins are common as well as the occasional out of spec chamber, and lastly a headspace issue. Usually the neck of the chamber can either be short or too tight causing the need to slap the bolt open. Hope that helps anyone who needs that info.

    Thanks for a great video. I found it most informative.
    This video, and a few others, piqued my curiosity regarding the Mosin Nagant. I saw one long ago at Gander Mountain for $100. I was amazed by how long the barrel was.
    I did some research and learned the ammo can be purchased in bulk for 23 cents per round if you don't mind low grade steel. The lowest price I could find for 30-06 ammo in bulk was 60 cents per round. Big difference! But of course it was made with top grade brass that can be reloaded. I was made to believe you can't reload the steel casings. Maybe you wouldn't need to at 23 cents per.
    Some crazy guys did a torture test on a Mosin using shells that were loaded far beyond the safe recommendations and the Mosin proved to be incredibly durable. There were loads up to three times the safe powder limit that seemed not to faze the gun.
    The least expensive 30-06 I could find NEW was at Cabelas for $330. Of course there are good used 30-06 to be had as well and they should be less then $300.
    I'm intrigued by the Mosin but will probably stick with my 30-06.

    I read somewhere that Imperial Russian soldiers before 1917 and Red Army soldiers after 1917 were taught to use the target's belt buckle as their point of aim within 300 yards to compensate for the Mosin-Nagant shooting high within that distance. I've noticed that my Mosin-Nagant does the same thing. It groups tight, but consistently about a foot high at 200 yards.
