Ruger 10/22: The Everyman's Rifle, Part 2

  • Part 2 of 2:
Every shooter in the US should own a Ruger 10/22 (and I wish my overseas viewers could too!). It is the everyman's, all-around .22 rifle. It shocks me when I find one that doesn't! That's because it provides immense enjoyment and capabilities for such a reasonable cost. Even out-of-box, the venerable 10/22 is accurate, very reliable, tough, ergonomic, lightweight, easy to use and carry, and most of all, fun! It continues to be an extremely successful Ruger design, having sold well over 5 million copies (and still going strong). It has out-sold and out-survived many other .22 designs to include the Remington Nylon 66. The 10/22 has always represented amazing value. That's because for a reasonable price you are getting a rifle that will probably last your entire lifetime. My circa 1976 10/22 (shown) was given to me as a young man by my Dad and has adventured with me in the swamps of Florida and Alabama, the woods of Virginia, Montana, and Washington, the plains of North Dakota, and in the deserts of Utah, eastern Oregon, Arizona, and Idaho. And it's still going strong. There are fancier and equally as-fun .22 rifles available but the 10/22s excel in most areas (and several cool Distributor Exclusive 10/22s abound, like the shown French walnut stocked TALO version) and provide unmatched versatility for the user. The 10/22 has a modular, simple design that makes upgrades to the trigger, bolt, magazine, stock, barrel, and sighting systems easy (many options shown in this Nutnfancy vid series). And because millions have sold, there is a plethora of wonderful and high quality accessories available for the 10/22. Downsides are few but include the lack of last-shot hold open and perhaps the tricky (for some!) bolt hold open design (easily upgraded). But these drawbacks are minor and the gun just gets it done. As a benchrest one-hole shooter, vermin hunter, plinker, survival gun, "Run 'n Gunner," training rifle, project gun, or valued heirloom gift to your kids: The Ruger 10/22 does it all and does it well . It is a staple here at TNP and I give it my highest recommendation. /////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 11 out of 10 ///////////// PART 2 INCLUSIONS: Ergonomics (including some stock sizing and options, LOP considerations, sights), bolt operation, sensible modifications, some factory gun variations, quick run down on disassembly and overview of reliability and durability.

We use to run around with 550 rounds split between 2 cargo-pant pockets when ammo was $8.99. I have 25000+ rounds through my stock carbine and it still runs like a tank. I bought it to shoot it, and it always answered back with "Thank you sir may I have another." All day....If I could only have 1 rifle to live out the rest of my life with it would be the 10/22. I need about 10 more of them.

Man, these 10/22 review vids are what got me to buy a 10/22 (my first firearm purchase) about 2 years ago. The rest, as they say, was history. Couldn't be more satisfied with the value and reliability. Also, a fantastic project gun with so many options.

thanks for the lesson, I'm left handed and have never owned a firearm but go to the gun range often with friends just to be ridiculed for shooting "the wrong way" so I wanted to get a smaller caliber rifle with a lot of custom options to hopefully learn how to shoot right handed. this presentation definitely helped me out and even tho it was almost an hour it sure didn't feel like it! thanks again for helping me be more informed

The 10/22, absolutely a winner. I have several. Regarding the last-shot bolt hold-open feature, lack of, at least with this rifle, you will not hurt it dry firing it. Ruger in some of their manuals actually recommends dry firing for practice--make SURE the gun is totally unloaded!!!!!

I owned a Marlin 60 back in the day but bought my daughter a 10-22. Now I want one for myself. Maybe the Takedown model. We have the synthetic stock carbine length with factory "fiber optic" sights. It's very accurate and in 300+ rounds over 3 or 4 range trips, all our feed issues were due to ammo. Remington bulk ammo is cheap and very dirty. We have 2-3 FTF issues every time, none whatsoever with CCI. I may do the mod that allows the bolt release w/o pressing the release catch. Great vid as al

Again, fully in concert with you guys about Rimfire rifles here. When you buy a 22lr you end up with 2 great things: a fun rifle that you don't have to worry that much about, and a bunch of left over cash. I can't - and I think most of us can;t help but stat building them up to be increasingly "tactical". For that reason (this is not an advertisement) like go with Strike Industries as opposed to Magpul for a few reasons. Magpul is pretty serious gear, more for ARs and other battle rifles. Strike Ind is a bit more affordable, and a bit more intrepid in their designs. So you can really experiment with them without a lot of head scratching or worry.

I'd like to thank you for creating an hour long tutorial for the 10/22. I have to re-run through them because I got interupted a few times but I enjoyed seeing your enthusiasm for the rifle. I'm thinking of buying my 1st rifle ever at 40 years old and the 10/22 is what I'm looking at. I came here to while researching peoples opinions. I'm not sure if I want a Carbine or a Tactical or a Compact so some of your comments helped illustrate the differences.

My first gun was a pistol which just so happened to be a Ruger SR9c since pistols are so practical. If you get a conceal carry permit you can essentially have the thing on you anywhere you go.
As for the 10/22. Marching is right. Its all about shot placement and if you do get this as your only weapon for home defense I'd avoid a scope and get some 25 round mags and train to aim and spray the hell out of your target from upwards to 10 to 25 yds using the iron sights.

I've been wanting a 10/22 to "tack out" for a long time.
I'm a big fan of rimfire guns and have a few, but want allot more. My Glenfield 75 is probably the best pack rifle I've ever seen. My only complaint is that it uses a tube magazine. Another rimfire that I have is a Walther G22. It has a certain "cool factor" about it. Its a very fun and accurate gun, but there are literally no modifications on the market for it.

Looking to get a .22 rifle and pistol within the next 5-6 months. I will be able to have a lot of fun with them because of the price of ammo. Had a pretty good grouping, a little high and to the right but I was happy with it. Asked what is this baby: Ruger 10/22 with an Archangel stock. Then I found you! Looking forward to seeing more, thanks.

Not saying the Ruger isn't a great 22.LR, But i would have to say owning both the ruger and the S&W 15 22 i would have to go with the S&W, The breakdown of the gun is so simple it could be done by a monkey. Its very accurate, Especially love the working functioning bolt catch and how the bolt stays locked backed after each clip is emptied. So for all the haters on the S&W don't knock it till you try it, bet you will like it much better

I don't think you will go wrong with a 10-.22. If you know the owner & get a good price used is a good way to go. Most gun owners I know are honest and won't try to cheat you. you don't know a lot about fire arms, then getting good advice is essential. Hope you have an adult or parent to teach safety and have shooting fun with you. A .22 is not a toy. Best of luck hope you get a nice rifle. take care

Shooting right handed as a left hander is a very good quality to learn for more than just a 10/22 however, do not feel as though you have to learn it so that you can shoot only right handed! My wife is a lefty and shoots everything she owns lefty, 10/22, M&P 9mm, Walther p22 and an AR-15! 98% of the people who see her pull those all out at the range don't say s@%t to her and the other 2% are usually afraid to, haha!
