2008 R6 Comparison. Slip On vs Full Exhaust with Power Commander

  • Both of the bikes are 2008 R6 Raven's Edition. The best year for those bikes, since after 2008, Yamaha gave in to Europe's emission standards and downtuned it, causing a loss of 5-8 horsepower.
    Engine mods for the bikes:
First R6 - Megaphone slip on, 2,200 Miles (for Sale)
Second R6 - GYTR Slip on, M4 Header and Mid Pipe, Power Commander 3. Has seen a few track days
Difference is evident in the video, but in person it's even bigger. No cat and race pipes make the bike sound crispier and adds a lot more bass to the sound. It also makes it pop with almost every downshift. I can't tell how big of a difference it makes power wise, as the second one is sprocketed. When I rode a bone stock 2008 R6, it felt slower. Loud exhaust does add to the feeling of speed and makes it feel like you are going faster when in reality, power difference is negligible. However, sprockets and power commander do make a big difference. Power commander makes it a bit more responsive. Stock, it feels like you are playing a game with 100 ping. Power commander makes it go away.
Stock R6 is terrible for the street use as the power comes on way too late for street use. As soon as you get to the power zone, you are breaking the speed limit in most residential areas. -1/+2 makes it a bit more useable and more fun since you have to shift a bit sooner. Power comes on around 25 mph with sprockets, stock - around 35 mph
If you have any questions about either bike, leave a comment. I'll try to respond to everyone

Very interesting how the second bike had the white compliance plate removed from the frame. That's quite a strong hint that it had some damage and/or issue previously. None of the fairing decors are the original ones either. 2008 models either came in Graphite, Yamaha Blue or Competition White.

The plastics are original. '08 and '09 had Raven Edition R6. Basically the same bike but with gold wheels and fairings. 08 had slightly darker gold wheels and 09 had the brighter gold wheels that stood out a little more. Not sure about the past history of the bike, but since I had it, it was stolen from me, found a year later and now it's at an impound from theft recovery. Guy that stole it is in jail waiting for sentencing

That straight pipe would be much louder if the catalytic is deleted.

To me, it was perfect volume. Quiet when cruising around but screams like a motherfucker when you're on the throttle.

Is 2008 model really the best year from 2008-2016?

It has the most power at least.

Yes. Due to European fueling restrictions, 2008 has 4-6hp more

2008 and 2009 models (the model wasn't changed in 2009) are the lightest and they have the highest peak power. After that, power went down in order to comply with the EU emission regulations (Euro4 and Euro5) and the bike became heavier. I would guess that they exported the exact same bikes to North America. As of 2008, they had variable velocity stacks (YCC-I) which improved the midrange and the toprange noticeably.
