- Topwater frog fishing can be some of the most exciting type of bass fishing there is! On the down side, missed fish is an all too common part of the game. But what happens when a frog never hooks into a bass at all? What if the body design is so horrible that it makes hooking into a bass virtually impossible? In this video, we'll look at such a topwater frog and how bass fishing with this thing is nothing more than a lesson in frustration! #fishing #bassfishing #fishingtips

What's the bait you owned that you were most surprised didn't work well?
I would shorten the legs by 3/4 “-1”
All crank baits , outside of Rapala floating minnows
The Lunkerhunt, Tomahawk, etc.
Love 6th sense but completely agree. Want a fun switch up, grab a lunker hunt pocket frog. Great for small water and lighter gear.
Thanks for the tip!
Yeah I boil the frogs in water to soften the bodies up. I've lost so many on frogs I quit using them. Maybe I'll give it another go since I watched this video. Good stuff brother!
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching!
I've never fished a Vega Frog, but I will take your word on this. I'm personally a fan of the Booyah frogs. But I need to give the Scum Frog a shot! Thanks for sharing!
Booyah frogs do great! I think you'll really like a Scum Frog too!
It is definitely extremely frustrating to have them not get hooked up. The points you elaborated on make perfect sense. I think you tried it longer than I would have. Lol.
I generally try to give anything I buy a fair shake. But at some point I have say, "if I have to do all of this fixing and modding to get it to work right, maybe I'd just be better off using something else."
I agree! I have two Vega frogs and the hookup ratio is low. Anything by scum frog, especially the trophy , booyah pad crasher are much better!
The Vega frog gets great blowups, I just wish the hookups were better.
I don’t use that frog anymore. Lost some good fish on it due to poor hook set. My all time favorite frog is the KVD Sexy Frog. The plastic is soft and durable. I also trim legs down to 1 - 1 1/2 to make the fish bite higher on the hooks. Great video and thanks for info.
Thanks so much for watching!
which color frog KVD?
@@ConeyIsland1952 I like the green & white and the black for overcast days
I cant give up the Scooby-Doo frog from Pro-z baits. Best color I threw!
Thanks for watching!
I used to think Yamamoto senkos were junk because of how soft they are. I got tired of paying so much and changing worms after every cast. But after I caught some nice bass I changed my mind.
The softness is supposed to increase the action underwater. I know a lot of guys who use nothing but Yamamoto senkos for their stickbaits.
Watched an actual demo with all of the leading brand’s stick worms. No significant advantage - they all had the same action either weighted or not. The theory rests on how much water they displace. As with any product we place in a fish’s strike zone, use what you have confidence because you catch the most fish with the bait you fish the most. I am essentially a Berkley power worm guy.
Great information I've never tried a 6th sense frog but topwater is my favorite. Unfortunately they stopped making my all time favorite the Snag Proof brand Moss Mouse. I still have a few survivors in my tackle box.
It's usually a good idea to have a stash of some favorite baits!
Yeah, hook bending on that hardened steel can go South in a hurry...'snap'. I assume that's why you didn't open the Vega up any more than you did. The shank looked really long, maybe you can tweak the shank down a bit (staying away from the bend), to get a little more open angle?
I do this with my swimbait hooks when I want a deeper gap.
It already snags much more vegetation since I opened the hooks up. And I actually did open them up quite a bit. Before they actually stabbed into the body.
Hollow body ribbit frog, boil it makes legs so soft they work at slower speed that factory but reg works great you just get a few more .black white and American bull frog.its a great one two punch when throwing frogs.hot hot bait right now.thanks for all the tips.
I do like a Ribbit frog!
Nice video......what do you think of frogs with legs vs tails/ tassels as shown?
I have a few of the old Doug Hannon frogs that have legs instead of the tassels and I used them for years. They can work great!
I just bought a scum launch and painted trophy series frog and a googan popping frog and I like the feel of them for softness and how the hooks are angled. I also have a couple cheap Chinese ones I picked up that are not terrible haven't gotten a fish on them but had a blow up at least 😂
That's a nice list of frogs!
The one bait I owned that I never seemed to many blow ups on was a berkley power bait version of the spook. It had a soft body sleeve on the back 3/4 of a spook like bait.
I've never used that one. I just have a few of the Berkley J-Walkers and I like them.
Good show fo. Fishing funtime
Thanks for watching!
Booyah s Rock and priced right
They are great frogs!
Great video! I do not like the Vega frog as well.
Thanks for watching!
Can you make a video about inexpensive rods vs expensive ones. All these other youtube channels especially the big one always recommend expensive rods and reels but yet i see you fishing with a walmart abu garcia rod, do you really need a 300 dollar rod do your really catch more fish with them? How much should the average person spend on a rod?. Thanks for all the great videos. By the way i have 2 of them rods from walmart too😅
Here's the absolute truth about rods - You can get by just fine on a $60 - $100 rod and catch plenty of fish. My Abu Garcia Vengeance rods do great work for me. Where you really want a more expensive rod is for bottom bouncing techniques like jigs or Texas rig. A budget rod can work, but if you fish for a living you really need to feel everything and that's where a $200+ rod comes into play. Yes, it really does make a difference. For cranking, or topwater, or whatever else, a budget rod will work great.
Was curious, what type rod and type/gear ratio reel were you using? Just wondering, I had the same issue with that same frog, I was told my rod and reel were wrong. Which was at 7 ft medium heavy/ lews 7.5.1 gear ratio reel, which I think would suffice in getting a good hookup.
The rod and reel wouldn't affect hookups like that. The frog is just poorly designed. But I did use 2 different rod setups - my frogging rod which is a 7'6" heavy power with 50 lb braid and a 7.5:1 reel as well as a 7' MH with 30lb braid with a 7.1 reel.
Great review LB, hopefully 6th sense takes a look at the flaws in the frog. Do you think it could be the long legs on it and the bass are missing it? I usually trim about an inch off to make them shorter.
The body is surprisingly rigid and thick. I have other frogs with long tassels that hookup just fine. I'll give it a trim and see, though.
Seeing those missed fish hurts my soul. I can only imagine how it must have felt for you.
It was like a punch to the gut for sure!
I guess I am just lucky because I have caught a lot of good fish using this same frog. The only difference that I see between you and me...I use a true grit (BROOMSTICK) spinning combo from Walmart
I use a heavy power frogging setup that I really like.
Great review!!! Thanks for sharing your experience with that 6th Sense Frog. What style of scum frog is your go to?? Looked at them online but wasn't sure of the style(model). Would like to get one and try it out. Stay Safe & God Bless!! 🤠👍
Thanks so much for watching! There are several styles of frog that I really like, but my favorite scum frog is this one - www.tacklewarehouse.com/Scum_Frog_5_16oz/descpage-SFR.html
@@LowBrowFishing Thanks for sharing!! Looking to pick one up soon and having some fun reeling in a few nice ones!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍
Bass 3 lbs & over, typically have good hookup ratios regardless of the softness...As u can see, u caught a dink on the scum frog probably because it's softer....Likely, missed them on the Vega because they were small......i have probably 300 frogs...harder ones & softer ones.....Rarely have any issues on bass 3 & over with any frog...
I actually missed one close to 4 pounds. Spit it right at the boat so I got a clear look at it. Lost another about 3 pounds when I was pulling fluff off the line and it took the frog. It's jut not a frog I would ever use again.
Whats the action/taper of the rod your using? and type of Line your using?
I'm using my standard frog setup. That won't have any effect on hookup ratio.
It’s a terrible hollow belly frog… check out the Gambler Hollow Benny frog!
Thanks for the tip!
Wow, you only have one! I have several that I can send you.
One was all I needed.
Seems like it would be a good frog for pre-fishing when you don't want to disrupt/alarm the bass to the bad old hooks.
I guess that might be a silver lining.
Probably less work to get the right frog to start with. Strike King KVD
Thanks for watching!
Interesting video , definitely felt your pain with the lack of hook ups. I believe i can see a couple issues without having to see anything but you holding the frog. Apart from what you mentioned i can see the hooks are the wrong hooks for this profile of frog. For a length like shown a size 4-5wide gap frog hook would improve the results you may get. A bigger hook size would be able to rotate without being constricted by the body. Which brings me to another issue, the extended portion of the legs istoo high on the body ( design flaw) and they appear to br way too ridged again not allowing the undersised hooks to rotate a bit . The frog is too long for the hooks shown!!! Personally if i were to attempt to use this frog i would upsize hooks to either Gamagasuki or BKK wide gap hooks. The size and color are not the issue proven by the number of blow ups you were getting. I would boil it again for at least 2 minutes and let it cool slowly . Trim the legs to eye length. I fish nothing but frogs all season for bass from a yac in NW PA in some of the thickest lily pads around and my hooks are bent up and out much more than you show on this frog. I would much rather clean my hooks of algae, grass and bits of ripped off Lilly pad leaves than miss a hookset on a 5-6# bass. Also i sharpen my hooks religiously to dig in my thumnail when touched with the point. My frogs of choice may surprise a few people . I do like the Booyah brand reg and jrs. To get shorter really soft popper frogs i use Runcle , to get a good soft frog with excelent hook ups i swear by Truscend warrior frogs in the 2" and the larger ones in the 2.7 " frogs . . Again this is a great learning opportunity you have brought forth to the people who fish with frogs and i appreciate you efforts. Ive got a box of frogs that just didn't cut it for one reason or another . In my opinion a smaller frog will give much better hook ups ( black) . Your form looked very nice as you set on those fish too. Keep on " Rippn' Lips" ..... . AKA The Frogman. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏
Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
I use H20 express stuff all the time and never had any problems. They make good lures
Nothing wrong with H20 Xpress at all!
It seems like you would want a frog to be softer. Thanks for the heads up.
The Vega frog is surprisingly stiff!
I have a googan frog that sucks too
I haven't ever tried those.
I've had good luck on the bluegill colored Googan frog
I have one and it’s the hardest rubber out of every brand I own. Boiled it many times and it’s still too stiff for my liking. I won it. I sure didn’t buy it.
I really like 6th sense products so this is surprising. Thanks for keeping it real LB!
Yeah...they make great stuff, in general...you just have to keep in mind that not every time up to bat is gonna be a homerun.
I was surprised as well! Thanks for watching!
could of been the frog was to big for the fish in that water. Switching to a smaller frog helped catch the smaller fish
I hooked a couple that were 3+lbs and lost them as well. Right at the boat so I saw them.
I just bought that frog 2 weeks ago 😂😳🥺😬
I think a lot of people have one.
you know 6th sense ain’t puttin much effort in frogs😂
i won’t lie the not taking on water thing alone is kinda selling me on it…
That was super nice but I would have preferred a better hookup rate.
Come on, dont hold back, tell us what you really think about the 6th Sense Vega frog 🤣, I recently un subscribed to your channel, only because I felt like I had too many Subs, but because of your raw, unvarnished honesty, I am back ! I agree, I love 6th Sense, but this is the Joe Biden of frogs ! Thanks
Welcome back! I hope 6th Sense fixes the Vega frog because it really does get a ton of blowups.
The rod you're using looks really soft in the tip. Also, set your hook up, not to the side.
Thanks for watching!
I'm a huge fan of Booyah frogs. Great hookups on those. I heard those Vega frogs were junk but haven't tried one.
I have a few Booyah Pad Crashers that have done really well for me!
Maybe it's just too long
I have longer frogs that work just fine. My Fish Lab popping frog is 3 1/2" and it has a great hookup rate.
Sounds like ducks laughing at u😅
The ducks are always laughing at me.
