It may come as some surprise to you that in 2018, the Toyota RAV4 was the 5th best selling car in the entire world. There is a lot at stake here and Toyota must have felt some pressure to get this one right.
    So, have they?
In this review, join Cars.co.za's Ciro De Siena as he explores the newcomer in depth on Cape Town's scenic roads.
We take a detailed look at the interior, the infotainment system, the ride quality and all important boot space. We also discuss the engine and transmission choices for the new range and the fact that there will be no diesel or hybrid variants available in South Africa.

Got the previous gen with NA 2.0l CVT FWD. Same power. Having owned that, for this price range, I would go for the TIguan. Android auto and Apple carplay is definitely missed. Cooled seats are awesome though. For a long drive, lumbar support + cooled seats + soft steering wheel + turbo engine is what I wish I had in my Rav4. Also, my car's fuel economy is pretty horrendous. 11l to 12l per 100KM average. The old 2.2 diesel VX does have the lumbar support and some other goodies. Nice to see rear aircon vents are added.

Too bad about the "in car" audio, barely audible.
The US spec for the RAV4 gives you the almost ubiquitous 2.5 liter 4 cylinder mated to an 8 speed (conventional) automatic transmission.
Apparently Toyota uses a CVT in any product that has a 2 liter or SMALLER engine, or has a hybrid powerplant.
BTW, testers in the US called the 8 speed "clunky" in operation, so it's a toss-up as to which is better....CVT or 8 speed.

You could have a base Fortuner for less, sure it won’t be the same spec/equipment level but it’d have a proper gearbox, some actual grunt whilst being more capable off-road all in a more practical and rugged body.
It’s a no brainier in my opinion, honestly I’d go as far as saying anyone who buys this RAV-4 over a Fortuner has more money than sense. It’s more of a fashion statement than anything else.
The RAV-4 has a lot going for it, it looks great and the interior is top notch but the engine but gearbox combination spoils the entire package.

I find it intriguing the new Toyota Rav4, I pretty much like the facelift though but that doesn't compliment what's inside the bonnet. The interior looks marvelous to say that, I really think Toyota has Up its game there. The facia though looks weird I don't like the orange color on the facia. All black or grey or maybe even charcoal would've been a smart move. I just hope that Toyota didn't use the cheap plastic this time I really don't like that. Furthermore the boot space I'm kind of impressed with it. Toyota though has got the CVT gearbox as their flagship and I don't appreciate the sound of the gearbox if I could still hear in on the video. Though the car is Good and I would consider one of those given the fact that plus-minus 7l/100km if that's what Toyota claims on paper. But I don't go with the anecdotal I believe on proven facts.

Toyota is utter garbage. They don't give you the technology. They don't give you the power trains. You get old technology and super outdated engines and the it costs the same as vastly better rivals. All its sales tells me is that Toyota has a good marketing department and some pretty uninformed fans and owners. You'd literally be crazy to buy this over literally anything else in the segment. Even the Chinese gives you turbo charging with the Haval. Toyota has lost the plot and consumers should talk with their wallets. Mazda, VW etc. Literally ANYTHING else is better than this. 203nm?
