2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • 2019 Toyota RAV4 looks very different from the model it replaces, but that is just the beginning. Sharp looks resemble those of US Toyota models - the Highlander and the 4Runner. I also see a bit of Jeep Cherokee. By the way, the Cherokee is only marginally larger, than the RAV4. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which allows among others better packaging of the hybrid powertrain. And the hybrid powertrain in the new Toyota RAV4 is supposed to be more refined, and more efficient.
    Starting price: 30 000 euro
    As tested: ~46 000 euro

Reviewers go on about the time the hatch closes, why stand at the back waiting? It closes so what. I don't find this a problem.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Before I walk away from the car I want to make sure it's properly closed and locked. There is no close&lock option, so I would have to walk away (in ten seconds I can be inside my house), and then lock the car via remote. And hope it reaches. In ten seconds a cat can jump inside, a child can stick its fingers under the lid, whatever. 10 seconds it's just a long, long time.

    • @tectorama
      @tectorama หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree, no problem at all. Imagine if the hatch came down faster and people
were injured. There would be dozens of people trying to sue Toyota.
Ours also came with the side steps, no problem with those either. In Europe the
2020 models come with Android auto and Apple car play. The navigation also
accepts voice commands, but isn't that easy to use unless you have the exact
location you want to get to. In the UK all Rav4's come as hybrids with AWD,
plus a plug in option. Expect around 50mpg (Imperial gallons) if driven with
      a light foot.

      Its simple.
A brand new car has no history, how you care for it will shape the car.
A second hand car is basically a gamble on how its been treated in
the past. You have no idea if the previous person treated the car very
badly and decided they they were a mechanic overnight and put twice as
much oil as it needed etc.

Nice video as always by Marek. Toyota Hybrid have no CVT, but a planetary gear which is even better. It can`t break, so to speak. I especially like the new RAV Hybrid with the all-wheel drive option. I've been driving the CHR Hybrid for a few months now and I'm very excited. When it was cold I had about 5 to 6 liters and currently about 4 l on average consumption. For single trips I came to 3,1liters. Toyota keep what they promise.

I test drove rav4 with this mirror - really unpleasant experience. To me it was eye focus issue - when you look ahead, your eyes focus somewhere far. With standard mirror the eyes also focus far (just through the mirror). You drop a quick look, check what's behind. This happens real quick - 1 second maybe Now when the screen is on - the eyes are focusing to a close object - a small screen that is few cm from you. It takes 1-3 seconds to switch, and then re-focus back on the road ahead (another 1-2 seconds. I did not like this at all.

We have the 4th gen version and agree with your thoughts on the mpg and compromised boot size. It’s rare to get 50 uk mpg but typically 44. The engine is a bit noisy when accelerating but being older people we don’t do speedy overtaking as it would be a little risky and need careful planning. Comfort is good but handling is not great on bendy roads. I really don’t like the new rav looks with the square wheel arches and prefer the Honda CR-V.

You have a point. Toyota in the US has Android Auto, Alexa and Apple Car play on all their latest cars...here in EU it handles slowly the required licencing. On the other hand the new Corolla (former Auris) has Android Auto and Apple CP from the get go, I was looking into the new RAV4 and when I asked, Toyota said that the hardware is ready for Android Auto but not activated and when the licencing is done Toyota will offer free retrofit (to what ever requires it) or update to activated.
So technically you could get a RAV4 now and when Toyota will get the licence you could go to a dealer and they would enable it for free.
PS: You should ask your dealer and contact Toyota to make sure you won't pay a thing, some dealer are sketchy.

Carwow - I didn't notice any brake noise (maybe it's his test car), at 15:10 he says it's pretty quiet, there's just a little tire and wind noise. He claims C5 Aircross was quiet, whereas mine was really loud at motorway speeds.
The next 4 are US spec non-hybrid, so pretty much irrelevant, BUT:
The Straight Pipes are referring to acceleration sound, and then they say the cabin is quiet.
Steve Hammes is also referring to engine noise under hard acceleration.
Tom Voelk also doesn't like the engine sound under hard acceleration.
Consumer Reviews also complain about the engine sound under acceleration.

Marek Drives unfortunately, you’re right. These new Direct Injection engines run rough.
In North America, at least, the Rav4 gets an Aisin 8-speed with the non-hybrid 2.5L, instead of a CVT. Those are mostly Canadian-built cars. They are also missing the hood blanket, as insulation, on those models. They may have cheapened out in sound insulation there. The hybrids are all made in Japan and still have the blankets.

The infotainment 'why not use bigger buttons and write on them rather than above them?'. I think that is a really good question! The climate control is really chunky and easy to use, maybe even with freezing cold hands so why not make the infotainment easier to hit on the move? The only thing I could think was that Toyota build cars to theoretically last a long time so maybe they thought the words would fade from the buttons of they were pressed a lot over 150,000 miles+ if they were printed onto them.... but then the buttons on the steering wheel have graphics printed onto them.....

But - ordinary sat-nav, with no apple or android car play??
Am I supposed to stick a Garmin/Tom Tom onto the dash/screen for the next 4 years or so?
For me, this could be a deal breaker as one of the big reasons I wanted to upgrade was so as NOT have to have this setup. If this is a software licencing issue with Android and Apple (read saving £), then in my view, this current situation will not serve them well. After all, how many Apple/Android licences could they have paid for, just from the profit they would have made from the car they will now not be selling me? Seems very shortsighted to me. All other details were acceptable to me, including the price.

    • @MarekDrivesENG

AFAIK they added Android Auto to some cars retroactively, but you'd have to check VIN with the dealer to verify, whether a particular car can be upgraded or not. Also with the new system launched in Lexus NX, Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra there are some issues with Android Auto. For now it's not wireless, and has some connection issues.
Long story short - it should work right out of the box.

      3. The button on the key fob opens the tailgate, but in order to use it you first need to unlock the car, for example with another button on the key fob. It's a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless, especially with the amount of time the tailgate on this car takes to open and close.
