My RAV4 HSD 2016 was one of the first sold here in Slovakia and works flawlessly up to this day. Zero issues and I am very, very satisfied with the vehicle (inspite of a few design/ergonomic choices). Currently waiting for a new ordered RAV4 HSD 2021 which should be ready in May/June - great to hear all potential sources of problems. Just it case. Overall I really like the vehicle, that is also the reason why I didn't consider other SUV when ordering a new car :) As for the video - as usual, informative, honest, great!
You are a great communicator. You explain things at a simply level, for all of us to understand. Maybe instead of talking to the viewer in the exact same position all the time, maybe point to the problem or show the viewer the problem. Great work.
Toyota Rav4 are the most expensive small suvs and should not have any problems. My Subaru Forester is not perfect even in top trim but it's less expensive and the few oddities are far less problematic and can be ignored. Subaru of America is pretty good about fixing their car problems even out of warranty J
@@jamesmatthews304 Some models of the Rav 4 are rated to tow up to 3,500 lbs. The Subaru Forester is only rated to tow up to 1,500 lbs. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on this) I'm not sure why this is the case (I'm still doing research) but to be honest, I'm considering holding off on buying a small SUV until they bring back the V6, as 3,500 lbs towing capacity is barely adequate for my needs.
As you know we have a 2019 RAV4 hybrid and we had the fuel tank problem! We had an early model and lived with it for almost a year was quite annoying problem but Toyota stood behind their product! Big thumbs up Toyota car care nut! I appreciate you!!
I bought a 2021 Rav4 Prime XSE $41K Looks & works great. After watching your videos I immediately checked HV battery filter, was clean. Also checked cabin air, engine air filters, all clean, oil level is correct and oil clean. EV battery was showing near 0%, I figured how to charge it from engine and now battery is 95% full. Car came without a charger, will have to look for level 2 charger. My other car is a one owner 2006 Prius gen2 which still works with 345,000 miles on it, still gives me 50mpg, recently started burning oil and some plastic parts are cracking. Thanks for your videos Ahmed.
Had the gas tank issue - Toyota came out with the fix (or I was notified) late December 2020, it went in for four hours, came back flawless. I still "complain" that you have to drive like a grandmother in perfect conditions to hit the advertised MPG (by the way, thank you for responding to my last message and confirming this for me), but otherwise, LOVE the car, and now that you told me how to fix the memory seat thing, even better, I am about to go to the car and try the fix now! Keep the videos coming, they are fantastic!
I am totally agreed with the 8-speed transmission behavior. When I drove it from the dealership, I immediately noticed the transmission is jerky and shifting erratically. However, after driving 500+ miles, it shifts like a dream now. Also, the engine is loud( probably because of the direct injection) when cold, but when it warms up( I guess it switches to port injection) you can't even feel it.
Yep, my last vehicle was a Highlander with the 8 speed. Never noticed any transmission issue, even on hills. Love my new Rav4 Hybrid, but do miss the silky smooth ride.
I have the 2019 RAV4 Limited. To date I have had the following done - clutch assembly replaced (warranty), fuel pump replacement (recall) and replaced both roof rack bars as it was leaking when it rained. Also replaced the entire headliner because of the water marks. While I’m not happy with the three problems, I do love the vehicle and Toyota was very helpful. I had a 2016 RAV4 which my mother still has today and not one issue.
I have a 2021 XLE Hybrid with 8100 miles. So far, ZERO issues. Will update. Can confirm that direct injection engines are far louder than older port injection units. They’re also much more thermally efficient, so more powerful and better on fuel.
Hi George. The D4S engines are very loud, but it’s not reason for concern as that’s their normal noise because of the direct injectors and high pressure pump. The A25A does have a high thermal efficiency that’s why it’s efficient and powerful for its size
I do not own any Toyota vehicles but if I did I would be at peace listening to the candid reviews that you put out on the You-Tube channel. All vehicles have some issues more or less and how they are cared for by a manufacturer makes or brakes the customer confidence. Good report for all that you mentioned here, cheers.
I fully agree. He can take a very difficult subject and make it sound so simple. Love his presentation style. It feels like he is talking to his children. May God richly bless you.
Excellent channel. Yes, I would never buy the first year of a new generation of any make or model. I would certainly give it time for the company to work out the problems first as minor as they may be.
I really like how aggressive Toyota is on finding defects and immediately fixing them on the production line and then their follow through with the existing customers. Good for them.
Any product made by man can or will fail at some point. However, my friend, take a very deep breath and assure yourself that Toyota has a multitude of “whizz kids” who’ve were and are hired to anticipate and fix problems. If you still can’t calm yourself, you might try attending church more regularly. Dave in Phoenix Arizona
It took years and so many people dead before they admited the acceleration problem. And thats not the only problem they have over the years, corrosion and broken frames , sludge because the poor design in the cylinder heads, turbo engines that only lasted one year. They expend too much money advertising the fake quality trying to brain wash people, i havent seen a single camry that doent burn a quart of oil every thousand miles or less, there is no recall for tath after numeruos lawsuits they agree to check it but they didnt fix it.
This 180 degrees from my experience with buying a new '19 Rav4 AWD LE. Within the first few days of ownership I noticed shifting issues at low speed when coasting then trying to re-accelerate. The transmission would hesitate then jerk into gear, also jerking occupants. When coming to stop the transmission would also clunk. I took it to the dealership and reproduced the problem. They compared it to other vehicles on the lot that seemed to exhibit the same problem. The dealership wanted to say that there was nothing wrong with it because the other vehicles were the same, but after contacting Toyota customer care they sent a Toyota specialist to the dealership to collect data. They observed the shifting problem and even showed in their data collection what was happening when the issue manifested. In spite of that they insisted that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. It was a big lie. They effectively gaslit me. The service manager at the dealership treated me like crap and Toyota Care refused to do anything about it. 8 months later I found out that Toyota had quietly released in ECM firmware update that was a work around hack to avoid triggering the underlying issue that caused the hesitation and jerking into gear. When I took it back to the dealership to get the patch applied they forced me to reproduce the problem yet again in spite of having service records and the Toyota specialist out for my vehicle already. Toyota, like other manufacturers, will do nothing unless they're forced to because of potential loss of revenue. They don't care about their customers, they care that people think they care about their customers. The '19 is 4th rav4 and I currently own a Corolla along with the '19 Rav. So I'm not a Toyota hater, but truth is that customer satisfaction is third or fourth on their list of priorities.
To be honest, the fewer problems one might face when buying a second hand first year 5th gen Rav 4, are not a big deal or they have easy solutions, the car is pretty good where it truly matters.
A funny thing I saw at our local drag strip. Someone put a Rav4 Prime up against a souped up 1970s Chevy Nova in a ¼ mile drag. The Rav4 Prime beat the Nova. Everybody that laughed at the Rav4 but had nothing bad to say when it trapped a 14 second ¼ mile at 99 mph.
You’re the best my friend. We have a 2023 RAV4 2.5L. The wife loves the car but told me it’s loud. It all makes sense now. The noise is only present under heavy acceleration. Thx again
The Car Care Nut is simply the best. Any and all toyota questions, I come to this channel and about 95% of the time they're answered in great detail. Thank you so much good sir!
My wife’s 2020 XSE had 2 issues, both have been resolved after about a year of ownership. 1. If I left it parked for a couple days it would not start. I even had to buy a portable jump stater cuz it kept happening. After a couple trips to the dealer with them saying everything checked out fine and how it’s meant to be driven everyday, Finally the dealer called it in and found out there was a firmware update. Hasn’t happen since the update. 2. The gas tank would not accept more than 9 gallons when empty. Finally after about 10 months they fixed it by replacing the entire tank. After a quick internet search I found that They knew about this issue when they sold it to me and didn’t disclose it. Otherwise the RAV has been excellent for us, but it’s disappointed to have so many issues on a Toyota since My 08 4Runner has been bulletproof.
I bought a low mileage ex-rental 2020 RAV-4 and had the same electrical issue. When I bought the car I was very surprised to note that Avis had installed a brand new battery in a car with just over 20k miles on the clock. After a few times jumping the dead battery I brought it to Toyota. It took over 6 hours for them to update the firmware under warranty and to do an oil and filter change (regular scheduled maintenance). 15k miles later now - no problems at all.
Excellent review but it failed to touch on other specific issues current owners are experiencing. I bought a new 2019 RAV4 with 55 miles on it with no issues until Feb 2022. I had my headliner replaced due to a sunroof drainage/mold issue. Good thing it was under warranty - issue fixed after the car spent 4 days at Toyota dealer. Just recently (March 2022) the right side passenger door started collecting rain water - so much water that you can hear it slushing inside the door when stopping and accelerating. Found out the door's drain holes will eventually clog and need to be serviced. Also, the roof rack clips are lined with a cheap thin gasket and water will start leaking inside the car causing a mold build-up in the headliner. The fuel pump was replaced due to a recall soon after. I'm mentioning all this because the car only has 9,000 miles. This shouldn't happen to a 3 year old car. Toyota needs come clean and possibly extend the owner's warranty at no additional charge. Thanks for the video!
I am watching this video in August 2024 because I am looking at buying a 2021 Rav 4. Knowing where you are with your shop today is amazing. Thanks AMD.
Just bought a 2019 Limited hybrid - it's a great vehicle, and I pick it up at the end of the month. Thank you for describing the mirror issue - my May 2019 delivery date car has the issue.
And the gasoline tank issue... At least Toyota already has a program to fix it (W46). The tank was at 3/8 full and the nozzle clicked off after 24 litres - in a 55 litre tank. At least Toyota has a warranty for this issue for eight years.
As an owner of the 2019 Rav 4 Limited, I had a couple of issues when I first purchased it. Shifting was messed up and seat features didn’t work and they reprogrammed the transmission, fix the seat issue and rear hatch were corrected. No more problems with the exception of the noises from the engine. From what I recall the issue is the high pressure fuel pump and injectors. It fine now that I know it’s not likely to blow up. Love my Rav 4 and my 2017 Lexus RX 350. I have owned many Toyota products over the years. 1994 Toyota Camry 300k (sold), 2001 Lexus RX 300 286k (sold), 2008 Lexus RX 350 (65K) destroyed in an accident no serious injuries. Time will tell how the 2019 Rav 4 holds up. Thanks for this video.

Thanks for the honest talk. I wanted to buy a 2020 RAV4, but it was too noisy. You explained why, now I understand. I just wish more sound insulation. I just purchased a blizzard white 21 rav 4 xse hybrid, the rav 4 drives just as smoothly as my 2019 E63s Amg if not better, good job to the Toyota Cambridge plant for the quality build. I was worried the quality wouldn't be the same as a Lexus NX built in Japan, its just as good, fit and finish is well done. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I have the gas tank issue with my 2019 Rav4 Hybrid, it seems to get worse in the winter. I just received a recall notice for the gas tank yesterday. Outside of the gas tank issue, I love the vehicle. I track every tank of fuel. In the summer on summer fuel, I get 42mpg to 45mpg. In the winter it drops to about 39mpg.
I got that as well , it’s not a recall read it carefully. My 2020 hybrid has the fuel tank problem and I have 8 years or 100,000 miles to get it to Toyota.
@@davidclements9025 You are correct it isn't technically a recall, it basically says, if you can live with it fine, if not it is up to the consumer to bring it in. Which for me I will be making my appointment after my next fill up. When I bought the vehicle it had a range of over 580miles, now it sits at about 400.

@@GoBearstyJpyn Happy retirement! Isn't it nice to have the option of keeping a high mileage car that has not become a money-pit? With the RAV4 and the 4Runner you have the best of both worlds. If you have the space to park it, adding a new 4Runner to the stable sounds like a solid plan to me.
Very informative, I guest many people do not realise car manufacturers do have design and manufacturing problems. Most manufacturers do not like publicly revealing them. It is good to know Toyota honours its guarantee and customer obligations.
I bought a new RAV4 Excel AWD in September 2019. I'm in the UK and models here seem to vary a little compared to American models. I haven't had any of the problems mentioned, except if you only put a small amount of fuel in the tank it doesn't register on the guage. It's ok however after the next big fill. I like the car, it's an easy drive but there's a fair bit to learn if you use all the features.
Not sure if Toyota hates or likes you! let me say, you are a source of info like no other. I have graduated to Toyota after having more troublesome older vehicles. I have 15yo corolla & 14yo yaris, both lovely to drive reliable cars (when properly maintained with reg oil changes). Recently my corolla fuel gauge showed nil (corrected itself after a week). nearly paid $300 for new fuel tank sender. As one technically inclined but no longer a under bonnet “fiddler”, love your open honesty about new car issues. Toyota should thank you - the average service centre will hide such issues from their customers. With so much software control of fancy features these days, there is potential galore for idiosyncrasies. Toyota uses customer base as testing ground! Nothing wrong with that. Having your channel makes me want to stick with Toyota when i upgrade (which i do fairly infrequently in the interest of economy).

I just had the gas tank replaced on my 2020 Rav4 XSE Hybrid, nice to have a full tank of gas finally. Oh I'm the guy that doesn't notice the mirrors moving... great video!
This is the best informative channel ever from a toyota mechanic 🤙🏼

My RAV4 HSD 2016 was one of the first sold here in Slovakia and works flawlessly up to this day. Zero issues and I am very, very satisfied with the vehicle (inspite of a few design/ergonomic choices). Currently waiting for a new ordered RAV4 HSD 2021 which should be ready in May/June - great to hear all potential sources of problems. Just it case. Overall I really like the vehicle, that is also the reason why I didn't consider other SUV when ordering a new car :) As for the video - as usual, informative, honest, great!
This dude really knows what he talks about. Thanks for the great content 👍
I just exceeded 100K miles on my 2021 RAV 4 XSE. Absolutely runs great, no issues at all.
Refreshing to see an actual industry expert and not some Google warrior faking knowledge. This seems like pretty solid information.
You are a great communicator. You explain things at a simply level, for all of us to understand. Maybe instead of talking to the viewer in the exact same position all the time, maybe point to the problem or show the viewer the problem. Great work.
This really helped me feel better about the issues that made me hesitant about buying it. I really appreciate it!
Finally an explanation on why my battery kept dying last winter. The dealership was clueless.
My battery has died 3 times! The dealer kept telling me it checks out fine. After watching this video, I told the dealer how to fix the problem.
(Please correct me if I'm wrong on this)
I'm not sure why this is the case (I'm still doing research) but to be honest, I'm considering holding off on buying a small SUV until they bring back the V6, as 3,500 lbs towing capacity is barely adequate for my needs.
Also, the engine is loud( probably because of the direct injection) when cold, but when it warms up( I guess it switches to port injection) you can't even feel it.
my rental did the same thing
Yep, my last vehicle was a Highlander with the 8 speed. Never noticed any transmission issue, even on hills. Love my new Rav4 Hybrid, but do miss the silky smooth ride.
transmission is acting wierd now at 7k and the AC and heater sucks
I love my 8 speed. It is the fasting shifting transmission I've ever had.

2019 was one of the years to avoid for the rav4, apparently lots of people had issues with that model year.
I have a 2019 rav 4 17 k miles not one problem love this SUV
I have a 2021 XLE Hybrid with 8100 miles. So far, ZERO issues. Will update.
Can confirm that direct injection engines are far louder than older port injection units. They’re also much more thermally efficient, so more powerful and better on fuel.
Hi George. The D4S engines are very loud, but it’s not reason for concern as that’s their normal noise because of the direct injectors and high pressure pump. The A25A does have a high thermal efficiency that’s why it’s efficient and powerful for its size
Your biggest concern is the HV cable to the rear motor corroding depending on where you live. Just google cablegate.

Totally agree with that. First thing I do is like. I already know it’s going to top notch.
Wow..this makes me look forward to my Rav4 Adventure even more!
Excellent channel. Yes, I would never buy the first year of a new generation of any make or model. I would certainly give it time for the company to work out the problems first as minor as they may be.
Almost 400k subs. You deserve every one of them. Thanks for what you do
I really like how aggressive Toyota is on finding defects and immediately fixing them on the production line and then their follow through with the existing customers. Good for them.
Defect check shd be done pre-prod. Door dont lock when driving..what a crap.
@@chris2790 your dealership tried screwing you over just like so many others do every day.
Don’t know. I have a 2004 RAV 4 (that’s 2004) which does whatever I ask without complaining. Can’t see any good reason for changing it
Maybe it was the the hybrid version, they rate over 300 hp against a poorly tuned Nova? :)
People laughed because even if it is a Rav4 Prime, it's still a Rav4.
This is why I call my Rav4... The Ravager
You’re the best my friend. We have a 2023 RAV4 2.5L.
The wife loves the car but told me it’s loud. It all makes sense now. The noise is only present under heavy acceleration.

I bought a TOYOTA RAV4 2021 LE and So far 3 months I ALREADY TOOK IT TO LAS VEGAS AND SF AND NO ISSUES I’M IN LOVE WITH IT MY LITTLE FAMILY IS CUMFY .
From where?
This is by very far, THE MOST INFORMATIVE Toyota RAV4 video. It gave me a lot of confidence to make a good decision.
This man is a true gentleman educating us and has such helpful videos . My Prius runs great thanks to his recommendations! Bless you
I bought my wife a 2021 RAV4 Limited and she loves it. It's a great car.
Same issues for my 2019
I really appreciate your honesty
Keep up the good work.
Honest, precise, and comprehensive, you are a pleasure to listen to.
Any update on your rav4? Still liking it?
@@khlfff2 Like it a lot! Replaced the OEM Yokohama tires and that alone reduced much of the road noise. Got 32k miles on the odometer and it runs great fuel economy is 34+ mpg averaged since new!

Thanks for the honest talk. I wanted to buy a 2020 RAV4, but it was too noisy. You explained why, now I understand. I just wish more sound insulation. I drove my 2004 RAV4 for 16 years and loved it but it was noisy more noise from a new one was no good. So I bought 2020 Forester. It is good but I miss Toyota.

I have a 2019 LE front wheel drive basic Rav4, love it with no problems (not one) it gets 35mpg and love it. I might get a hybrid Rav4 in 2 years or another LE, my only problem is the dealership sucks just like every other GM, Honda and Dodge dealership I've dealt with over the last 45 yrs of driving. 🚘
Yep, that’s where my 2010 RX was built and it still looks and drives new to this day!
Andy Melo, The new NX will be built in the same plant.
I drive a 2012 Prius plug-in currently. It has 245,000 miles on it, and runs perfectly. When it finally does quit running I’m going to get another Prius or a RAV4 hybrid. So I very much appreciate your helpful videos! Also appreciate your pretty positive tone and attitude. So thank you!
