I took delivery of a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid a month ago. The Rav was oversized for me and expensive. This Toyota Hybrid technology is very good and the Cross SUV is all I need. Just done first 2000 km and consumption is 4,8 liters per 100km. This is a mix of distance, highway and town driving. I have never experienced this consumption in a vehicle in my 48 years of vehicle ownership. I feel like I’m bridging the gap from hydrocarbon to electric.
@@bonjovi7120 but you're polluting the air with dirty emissions, so just go get a hybrid and actually try to care about the environment That's my advice to help you become a better person☺️

It's not like a regular cvt but actually the core of how the hybrid system works. There are many resources available online that explains how this system works and it's incredible to see how innovative it actually is.
Took me a bit to figure out what 'E-Four' meant. *AWD* 😉 Yes, we have a 2022 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. We purchased it very recently. And WE LOVE it. Took me a couple of days to 'Learn' how to drive it correctly to get the most fuel economy out of it. However, it is not all that hard. Our Son purchased a 2022 Prius Limited in January and is LOVING it too. He lives in Chicago so it really makes sense to own. Our Daughter just last week purchased a 2022 Corolla. Not a Hybrid but, the 2nd best thing to a Hybrid. She is getting in the high 30mpg range. You cannot beat owning a Toyota now a days. They are reliable, dependable, and worth every penny. Except you have a CD Player. Damn it. They quit installing those in the USA. My wife and I enjoy our CD's. (We have a 6 disk player in our 2007 Camry and it still works fine) Well, anyways we do have Sat-Radio and the JBL system so it is not all bad.
No low range? Its got a e-CVT. Much better than a low range. No , you got the ECO and POWER all wrong. It does not mean you are using electric or petrol. And NO , you dont get better mileage in stop start. High way is still better. Its just not as heavy as a normal car would be in stop start. Love the technology.I got the "cheaper" 2x4 Hybrid RAV4 and I love it.
Been driving Toyota/Lexus hybrids for over a decade now, and trust me they are trouble-free but to get the best efficiency you will need to adjust your driving style. Interesting not said, hybrids don't have a physical reverse gear so it only reverses with an electric mode
Nice video! I just think it's expensive. The privacy cover can also be stored inside the boot above the spare. My Rav4 (2020) does not have a CVT. I did some calculations, I would need a 4 year saving on fuel to make up the amount one would need extra to purchase a Hybrid. Only after the 4 years you start "saving", obviously these years can be shortened if the price for fuel increases. At the end of the 4 years people will probably see other options whether that is EV or Hybrid and make the move. So I would rather stick with my car for a few more years before making the shift to an EV (Toyota has a large variety heading our way) or Hybrid.
I think hybrid is a good option depending on how you use your car. Also think Toyota should have kept the more affordable hybrid Rav4 would have been my first choice.
So glad I managed to get the hybrid 2WD end of last year. Fantastic car - amazing power. So far I get 5/6-5.8 l/100km regardless of highway or in town.
My Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is on back order, so can’t wait to see that will turn out. I am however a bit skeptical wrt the power of the hybrid and then also the very small fuel tank. Back to your question if Hybrid technology will work is SA. I believe it will work better than EV cars like the IX. My reasoning is that SA is not close to be able to supply enough electricity for cars as well, they can’t even keep the lights on. Now imagine every household should have an EV car. It will simply kill the already strained electrical grid. This is a general fear in the US as well. So in short I believe the Hybrid will do extremely well 9n SA.
Had an order in for the GX-R hybrid but was told there is an 8-12 month delay due to lithium batteries so I switched to the new Hyundai Tucson Diesel. I was disappointed not to make the switch to a hybrid but I’m glad it ended up happening. New tucson is amazing and I’m getting around 6.0l/100km.
The most eco-friendly thing you can do for the planet, by far, is keeping the car you already own or if possible buy second hand. The manufacturing of these cars has a huge carbon footprint even if the end product is more efficient to run. I mean I'm happy that the cars being built are getting more efficient but if everyone could just hang onto the things they use for longer (cars, phones, electronics etc.) that's what makes a much bigger difference than getting a 5l/100km car to replace a 9l/100km car. It's also something anyone can do for free. This consumerism we have right now is what is most unsustainable of all.
Due to the fuel prices I think hybrid cars will save us a lot. You know why South Africans loves spur tires is because our roads are not reliable due to portholes and so many things which can damage tires on our roads, so I can not afford to drive a car without a spur tire.
I am Toyota fan would like to have Rav 4 plug in ( not available in SA). I drive BMW i3 i love it i am hooked on ev cars. The i3 cost me .30 cent per km. And the car is fast. I have solar so i also charge the i3 for free. I cant wait when Toyota brings BZ4 to South Africa. There is no car that drives like ev. No service cost. The bad thing about i3 is that it is car for 2 persons.
Where I come from, it makes more financial sense to buy a used low mpg car than buy a new high mpg vehicle to save on fuel costs. Cost of capital (debt and equity) is way too high to be spending all that money on a brand new vehicle.
I liked your review so thought I'd comment from Australia. I have a 2021 Rav4 Cruiser AWD and love it. Some interesting differences - the spare tire over here is not full size so the baggage cover stores in the spare well, warranty is five years or seven if you service with Toyota and the battery has 10 years. Interesting what they offer in different areas. I'm about to order a new one as they are taking 12 months to deliver.

I think right now hybrid tech is taking advantage of the fact that electric is taking so long to get here hybrid has been around for ages now, if electric was a viable affordable option in SA we wouldnt bother with hybrid it would be electric or petrol the buyer would choose and thats it. Some cars at the moment are fuel efficient enough and not as complicated thats why hybrid is something you dont see much of people dont wanna bother with the thought of just how much can go wrong. Yes hybrid is great dont get me wrong but like Ciro said its a good stop gap and and the manufacturer knows it. Once the HAVAL gets here it will be a spicey option to this.

My wife is actually considering a RAV4 but not sure whether to get the standard 2.5 petrol or the hybrid as this will be her retirement vehicle and will need to stick around for a good few years. The other consideration is a CX-5 2.5 petrol and again just because we will need a car that will last. Any thoughts out there, thanks
I was surprised to see you get the RAV4 with a CD player in the infotainment screen. I have not seen that on any Euro or US/Can spec cars even before the facelift.
It is so that them krazee merrikuns kan understand; they still cannot count to ten.....they were liberated July 4, 1776, but never noticed. And they are too inept for manual gearboxes, so they need CVT to ride cars. They ride, not drive.
I'm a fan of hybrid technology. I just feel that the pricing really needs to come down a bit. As we all know electric cars are in the millions of Rands, so hybrid tech will have to do.
i can only refer to european prices, but toyota hybrids are very competitive. just bought a Corolla Touring Sports with the 2.0 Hybrid. A close competitor from VW, the Golf Variant (wagon/estate depending on how you call them) costs 7.000 € more if specced to the same degree (like ACC, heated seats and wheel and so on) and the Golf only had a 150 horsepower mild hybrid which cant even drive electric only. so in my book, this is a huge difference.
I think Plug-in hybrids are perfect for South Africa. Enough cheaper electric range to do the daily commute and unlimited petrol range for when we do long distance.
Very informative and interesting video as always. Ps: We are barrelling towards an electric future, may be true scientifically, but Eishkom is barrelling in the opposite direction unfortunately. ☺👋👍

Please ask them when we will be able to get 4x4 VX Auto Fortuners, I've asked like 100 dealerships in SA and Botswana and no one has a definite answer.
Been waiting six months for mine and no production date yet. Infotainment being upgraded for Sep 2022 builds, so hoping mine is built later rather than sooner
Hi Juan, glad to see infotainment update for sep 2022, can you perhaps give more info regarding this ... did you here it from toyota SA directly ? Also how long have You been waiting since you ordered?
This is top of my shopping list for my next vehicle, but needs more tech and pano sunroof standard, I’m also taking a look at the new Kia Sportage 2023 that will give the RAV a headache
Sadly there was waaaaay tooooo much emphasis on the Non-Hybrid aspects of the car and almost NOTHING on the Hybrid aspects. When trying to decide if I want a Hybrid, information about the boot space and the rear leg room and infotainment system mean nothing, ziltch, nada to me. That was a RAV4 review with a little comment or two at the end about the fact that it is a Hybrid. I LEARNED NOTHING about the Hybrid.
Have to agree! No mention of power and torque figures or performance, E-Four not explained properly either. Transmission is an e-CVT, not normal "belt and pulley" CVT...
What is the difference to a Cross-Corolla? What is an Urban Cruiser? Is their a hybrid Land Cruiser? What is Toyota so confusing? I mean reliably confusing?
Ok...great stuff. Toyota should consider hybrid Quantums for taxi industry. People who dont have cars and cant afford uber could benefit from this tech The taxi industry is most under pressure due to crazy fuel prices while trying to meet the needs of their customers...who are also under great economical pressure. Toyota please introduce the hybrid tech on your new Quantums...could make a good difference in millions of people's lives.
Would like the top up hybrid. Cannot go full electric in SA, you will be left stranded. Top up hybrid will do best for pensioner me as I have solar which run idle most afternoons
Excellent review 👏....though I miss some comments on the power and torque performance 🤔. With the hybrid concept new to most of us, can somebody pls advice: 1. Can the two power sources operate simultaneously.....or is it an "either or" scenario ? 2. Does the driver choose which power source is driving the vehicle.....or is it part of the computer optimisation output deliverables? (i..e. automatically done ?). Thx in Advance
I love the planet and will have to do my part in other ways. But, I would rather buy a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and hustle for diesel than pay over 700k for Toyota Rev 4 VX mediocrity…literally less is more here, more cost.
Yet you bought the "save the planet" crap purported by cheating politicians and woke media, despite real data from actual climatologists. Just how smart is that. Those same woke people will soon prevent you to enter a city with your Diesel.
The competition is the Subaru forester not the outback. No electric tailgate and not real 4wd and it seems very primitive will wait for next model. R744k is very expensive.
The video title is misleading. There is not one single aspect or detail that helps us know if "Is a hybrid the best solution to cut your fuel costs" Really really trying to convince myself not to buy a BMW i3
Bro lied when he says the non hybrid is underpowered and thirsty. The 2.0 is rated at 127kw and the 2.5 at 152kw. The hybrid has also better fuel economy even in highway driving. Why does he mislead people buyers? Is it how journalists are trained?
Nice test if a bit thin on stats. The comment around NA RAVs being underpowered and thirsty was not well contextualised - my 2021 2.0 GX CVT on average uses 8l/100km (mostly commuting) - for its 127kW and size I'd say that rather good...
Agreed. My 2019 Mazda CX-5 manual gets me average of 7.1 litre/100km (town and highway combined, but mainly around town). We don’t need to pay and arm and a leg for a 5l/100km hybrid.
And, watched it again, and again. Maybe I was a bit critical. You did push all the EV - Hybrid, ICE , buttons. COMMENT: Hybrid is an excellent (drivetrain) crossover solution. PHEV even more.
If you watched the video you’d know he mentioned that the car-battery comes with a 8-yr/195 000km factory warranty. I think that’s enough for the first 2 owners at least.
I have very limited experience with hybrid vehicles, the only one that I have ever driven was a Toyota sedan...the Avalon (a sedan SLIGHTLY LARGER than a Camry) and that was in city driving. The car got impressive mileage under those conditions but not sure if it would do so well on the hiway. I probably should have bought it, the price versus mileage was quite good, but it was bordering on anodyne to drive. By my mental calculations (kind of rough approximation) that Avalon got about 6 kilometers to the liter.
Thanks for the review I have waited for this. I personally think hybrids are the way to go considering the fuel price. The new KIA sportage coming is looking much better and hopefully we will get the hybrid and plug in hybrid versions which look amazing compared to this dinosaur.
It just looks to old and tired to me . Those screens are horrible and too low quality in resolution and the seats are uncomfortable. I wouldn’t waste money on it . The whole interior lets it down
The rav is looking a bit worse for wear. Grill is showing off its plastic, The angles and lines in the body work with the plastic wheel arch protectors make it look like a boujee tekkie
Great review & car however it's still a hard sell for me. It doesn't solve the issue of 'pick your poison'. we still faced with two unpleasant choices(hydride v diesel) both giving us the same fuel consumption. Diesel is known for its impact on Human & Environmental health while batteries in hydrid (NiMH in RAV4 & Li-ion in other Toyota cars) raises concerns of Environmental health (mining of key components) & in some cases human health incl. toxicity/deaths/unfair labour practices in middle of Africa. Which ever pill you choose human will still suffer & unfortunately African population will bear the worst suffering due to mining of nickel in NiMH & Lithium/Cobalt in Li-ion batteries.
NiMH Batteries can be produced without even touching africa... Nickel isnt a concern at all. The biggest producers (odered by most to least amount mined) are: 1. Indonesia, 2. Philipines, 3. Russia, 4. New Caledonia, 5. Canada, 6. Australia, 7. China, 8. Brazil, 9. Guatemala, 10. Cuba - then comes the rest of the world... Cobalt on the other hand is concerning, i'll give you that.

All of them will last. The drive of the hybrid is so much superior to the petrol. Go book a test deive and compare
I do ❤️ a full size spare 🤣 Awesome review !!!
I was surprised to see you get the RAV4 with a CD player in the infotainment screen. I have not seen that on any Euro or US/Can spec cars even before the facelift.
5ft 9??? We use this in sa?
It is so that them krazee merrikuns kan understand; they still cannot count to ten.....they were liberated July 4, 1776, but never noticed. And they are too inept for manual gearboxes, so they need CVT to ride cars. They ride, not drive.
Can anyone help...when or if a fortuner hybrid is own its way and by when can we expect it
From which country does Toyota South Africa purchase Rav4 hybrid vehicles.Canada,USA?
So when can we expect the haval h6 hybrid
My Raf4 hybride automatic 200 HP all wheel drive is running fantastic. From the Netherlands to Javea Spain is 2000 km and 2000 back... we love it..
You did 4000km in full charge and full fuel tank?
@@refiloeshaneramoloto8281 We love to travel by car, and drove 2000 km to Javea Costa Blanca with filling her up of course One tank of 50 ltr goes 650 km.
Watch 4xoverlands debunking of running a awd/4x4 in 2wd means it saves fuel. If any difference, so little its not worth running in 2wd, awd much safer.
Rav 4 Hybrid and Cross Hybrid..waiting list of about a year.
I wanted to place an order for the new lc300 guess what 18month waiting period 👀
Waiting patiently for the hybrid Haval H6
Have you seen the reviews from the Australian reviewers about H6 hev
@@Mark_Anthony_africa i have a lot of good hype about it will definitely give the RA4 a ride for its own money
Why ? RAV4 Hybrid is significantly better.
NZ
Good video, car looks awesome besides the entertainment system. I think I'll wait till they update the entertainment system before buying (also gives me time to save hah)
Absolutely nice 👌🏼
Good stuff Ciro, I will stick with my i20 crdi 220nm and avg 4.5L per 100kms
Please ask them when we will be able to get 4x4 VX Auto Fortuners, I've asked like 100 dealerships in SA and Botswana and no one has a definite answer.
Please review the Duster
I think not having the speedometer needle will be tricky for sa as some will have a tendency to not know the speed they are driving
There is a speedometer needle, there is no rev counter*
Been waiting six months for mine and no production date yet. Infotainment being upgraded for Sep 2022 builds, so hoping mine is built later rather than sooner
Hi Juan, glad to see infotainment update for sep 2022, can you perhaps give more info regarding this ... did you here it from toyota SA directly ? Also how long have You been waiting since you ordered?
My concern with hybrids is that there’s a lot more to go wrong…
What are the repair bills going to look like when electronics go wrong??….
Was my thoughts too and that they make the engine a lot more congested.
This is top of my shopping list for my next vehicle, but needs more tech and pano sunroof standard, I’m also taking a look at the new Kia Sportage 2023 that will give the RAV a headache
When is Toyota bringing us the flagship RAV4 Prime? That’s the one I want to have
Agree!!
People who dont have cars and cant afford uber could benefit from this tech
The taxi industry is most under pressure due to crazy fuel prices while trying to meet the needs of their customers...who are also under great economical pressure.
With the hybrid concept new to most of us, can somebody pls advice:
1. Can the two power sources operate simultaneously.....or is it an "either or" scenario ?
2. Does the driver choose which power source is driving the vehicle.....or is it part of the computer optimisation output deliverables? (i..e. automatically done ?).
Thx in Advance
computer decides
You're welcome Ciro, you're welcome mate 😂😂
When will you test the new isuzu guys??????
I think im going to order this model but the higer trim
but who repair these hybrid cars around South Africa if anything go wrong
i have to choose between this and the Volvo hybrid 60 Volvo been excellent quality, and not a hi jack desireable car
What is the performance like and can it tow a trailer ?
750kg unbraked
Very informative .
I love the planet and will have to do my part in other ways. But, I would rather buy a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and hustle for diesel than pay over 700k for Toyota Rev 4 VX mediocrity…literally less is more here, more cost.
I Agree with you. I cannot believe Toyota is selling a 2022 car with such a crappy infotainment and low res displays. Time for an update ASAP!
Yet you bought the "save the planet" crap purported by cheating politicians and woke media, despite real data from actual climatologists. Just how smart is that. Those same woke people will soon prevent you to enter a city with your Diesel.
Absolutely agree ! 👍
The competition is the Subaru forester not the outback. No electric tailgate and not real 4wd and it seems very primitive will wait for next model. R744k is very expensive.
The video title is misleading. There is not one single aspect or detail that helps us know if "Is a hybrid the best solution to cut your fuel costs" Really really trying to convince myself not to buy a BMW i3
I thinks it's a good car
hybrid. yes.yes. and yes.
Bro lied when he says the non hybrid is underpowered and thirsty. The 2.0 is rated at 127kw and the 2.5 at 152kw.
The hybrid has also better fuel economy even in highway driving. Why does he mislead people buyers? Is it how journalists are trained?
I had to double check the release date for this episode. Feels odd to see a hybrid rav4 being reviewed as something new in 2022😃
Toyota South Africa always 1-2 years behind ..
Most auto journalists don't have practical experience with cars. They lie. This guy doesn't know the definition of underpowered.
Go Corolla Cross hybrid.........excellent value for money.
And, watched it again, and again. Maybe I was a bit critical. You did push all the EV - Hybrid, ICE , buttons.
COMMENT: Hybrid is an excellent (drivetrain) crossover solution. PHEV even more.
Future resale value will take a big hit. Buyers will be reluctant to buy an older one when it will cost over $5,000 to replace the battery.
My Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid achieves 21 kilometers to the liter. 4,8 liters per 100 Km. It’s impressive.
Thanks for the review I have waited for this. I personally think hybrids are the way to go considering the fuel price. The new KIA sportage coming is looking much better and hopefully we will get the hybrid and plug in hybrid versions which look amazing compared to this dinosaur.
Good luck with your reliability ....
"I am 5 foot 4..." = "I was born in 1953"
So, how tall are you in the 21st century?
Ciro you have put on some Kgs 😂😂
But it has somehow improved your humour 🤞🏽
he knows
I really don’t expect to see a Springbok forward in a Toyota RAV4…I’m thinking a Range Rover is probably more likely 😆
Prado. Range Rover is a wife’s car.
What the heck is a “Prado”? Sounds like something you put on a wedding cake…!
Those rear fans tho.... talk about throw back to venture/ siyaya taxi days.... Toyota wake up, no mannn!
“Strategic decision” = margin considerations
In reality disappointed in the infotainment system, guys like Chery and Haval are making a lot of noise on that segment!
I think the time for mild hybrids are past. You at least needs a plug in hybrid with a minimum range of 50km
Speed 1.25x thanks me later
