Toyota RAV4 2019 review

  • The Toyota RAV4 2019 model is the most sophisticated and thoughtful version of the mid-size SUV yet. It offers a huge 11-variant line-up, with six of those models being petrol-electric hybrids. And despite being almost the same size as its predecessor, the new version is considerably more roomy, notably more economical, and arguably more stylish. There's a lot to like here.

    Great review and Aussie, with metric references (so over American centric imperial). Ordered a Cruiser Hybrid in Jan 2020 and told maybe August! Ended up with an ex demo from WA ( I’m in NSW), can’t go past the fuel range / economy, boot space, quality and Toyota service. Great car and worth a test drive..

    Certainly looks better inside. The frontal treatment is stronger and more in line with what an SUV should be. Old one was too soft. Rest of vehicle - pretty good from most angles.
    Don't like the transmission choice.......CVT auto or a six speed manual?? Having to change gears five times is pushing it a little i think, particularly in towns or cities where most of us live. I still think diesel should be available......it is an SUV!

    Why isn’t the Hybrid the top grade especially when it’s the most powerful engine ? Also I hate when manufacturers strip out features for certain markets our Cruiser Hybrid is missing,
    - Windscreen deicer
    - Heated steering wheel
    - Ventilated seats
    - Heated second row outboard seats
    - Panoramic sunroof
    - Adaptive LED headlights
    - Puddle lights

      Worrywart I agree, to a degree. CVTs are very efficient and can squeeze every nM out of that engine. However, they are inherently more sensitive to heat and are trouble-prone. At least for now. That’s why Toyota has actually stayed away from them until recently and why the Corolla’s CVT has an actual 1st gear in theirs. That takes the biggest forces off the belt and onto a gear. Then, once the car is rolling, the belt takes over. Brilliant!

    The new RAV4 has been available in NZ for about a month. Have test driven the hybrid at various spec levels and like it very much. Coming from a Camry hybrid which has virtually no towing capability (400kg) I am looking forward to 750kg unbraked and 1500kg braked capability, while still retaining the hybrid fuel efficiency when not towing. Note those capacities are only on the 4wd hybrids (not interested in the petrol only models). I do think reviewers need to differentiate the eCVT fitted to Toyotas from belt driven CVTs of other manufacturers.
    @CarsGuide I note that multiple Aussie reviewers are talking about Apple Carplay (AC) and Android Auto (AA) later in the year, or retrofitted if bought prior. Is this something that was covered in the press briefing? I'd be interested to know if it is just a firmware change or whether the forward USB port needs to be changed as well? Bravo Toyota for making it free of charge instead of charging $500 like Mazda!

      @Craig Featherstone : Unlike Australia, Toyota NZ hasn’t bothered offering FWD hybrids, only the 4WD variants. Therefore Ian is correct (for NZ). The price difference between equivalent petrol and hybrid is also much smaller than Oz (only NZ$500 to $1000) - unsurprisingly already a long delay to get hold of a hybrid in NZ.

    It’s not a CVT transmission. It’s an eCVT transmission, which despite the letters, has almost nothing in common with a CVT. Look it up!

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's easy to explain - CVT's uses a metal belt or chain running between two pulleys whereas an eCVT uses electric motor to control the speeds of planetary gearset components. It's a better implementation because it suffers less slippage under high torque. CVT's are very efficient (not quite as much as a manual transmission), has a continuous band of gear ratios between the drive and the driven shaft. It transmits an uninterrupted power to the wheels and mostly runs engine at constant power.
      That's great, but this has major flaws. Firstly, no manufacturer actually implements a CVT the way it's meant to be implemented. This is because continuous rpm really drones on the drivers and saps feel between the driver and what is occurring to the vehicle. The CVT lacks the visceral feedback when implemented properly of a normal transmission. So car makers usually put in artificial steps to give some sort of feelback and normality to the driver, which negates the main advantage of the transmission. It's not a drivers transmission.
      Secondly, CVT's can't really handle as much power as other regular torque convertors or dual clutch (you'll never see CVT's in high power vehicles, and if the RAV4 was to have the turbo petrol 2.5L from the Mazda, the CVT would not handle it).
      CVT's are extremely popular in Japan with almost all of the high selling Kei cars being equipped with them because their 600cc engines and very light weights are perfect with this efficient transmissions, and they are noisy vehicles anyway, so any drone and high pitch delivered by this transmission is par for the course. Toyota is of course guilty of taking them from their Kei, to hybrids (where really, the CVT is a marriage made in heaven) to anything else. The one manufacturer though that completely rejects them thankfully is Mazda. In their 2012 redesign of their current transmission, they more or less automated their manual transmissions. It had one of the highest ratios of lock up on the market back them (others have caught up), and was is CVT efficient although in 2019, it can be argued that they'll need to add some more gears. They rejected CVT though based on the fact that it was a lifeless transmission.
      Currently I am in Japan and have been speaking with some engineers from Toyota (next week head to Mazda HQ in Hiroshima to quiz more). With the agreements that Toyota has signed to source a lot of transmission and engine tech from Mazda, there is talk of eventually switching over to the newer versions of Mazda's transmission in any future non hybrid Toyota of this size. Combine this with the Mazda SkyactivX petrol compression engine featuring in future Toyotas, and the Mazda and Toyota alliance will really put the Honda's to shame IMHO.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glenn Stewart To be honest, I prefer to hear the single optimum RPMs held on the CVT car I drive until I change my throttle input. My wife’s 2013 Legacy does that and it’s exactly how a CVT should be: peak rpms. That said, I think the current Corolla CVT implementation, with an actual first gear is better than what Mazda has.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      George L I suppose you have to get used to a CVT, and of course it’s disliked by so many because most of the market don’t like it. I wouldn’t dismiss the Mazda transmission so quickly though. I really dislike auto transmissions, and the Mazda transmission is very quick (almost DSG quick without the jerks). Head over to Savagegeese (among the most thourough reviewers on TH-cam), and he is even more complementary. In his opinion, Mazda’s transmission is best on market on any vehicle on sale in US under USD $50,000. That’s a massive call.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      George L and in research of noise in car cabin two sounds are important in reducing driver fatigue: 1 human voice range 2. Mechanical noise range. If you can keep the range of human voice low, people can talk. Mechanical noise of certain dB are shown to fatigue driver. Unfortunately the constant rpm of CVT stays in the fatigue range continually. I suspect it’s this that unbeknownst to the driver, is the reason it gets on people’s nerves.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George L but you have two good points. If a car manufacturer is not going to put hard yards in to create a good CVT alternative, then we can look to Subaru and the Corolla with first rear gear, as apparently having the best implementations of them.
      Today though, driving our family Honda N-Box Kei car here in Japan. And the CVT is driving me so nuts we can only spend 30 minutes in it. A bus is more comfortable.

      Hey Brandon. I am not ignorant in fact I am very well informed. If you want a proper review of vehicles look at John Cadogan of Auto Expert TV. He will confirm that Cars Guide and the like are nothing more than lackies to the car industry and pander to them so as not put the sponsorship dollars at risk. Unfortunately people like you just accept what is given to them. You are a mob of sheep. Why don't you do a video yourself going across the Nullabor and back and put the space saver on and see how you go.

    To my eyes it looks horrendous. Thoroughly nasty. Far too angular. Its one of the very few cars that I just do not like from a design standpoint.

    It's not a review. It's a glorified Toyota ad. Nothing wrong with a car besides a bit of a road noise? Would you suck off anyone who let you test drive their car? No car is perfect and never will be and there is always some sort of compromise. Too bad buyers find out about all the imperfections AFTER buying the car and not from your "review".

      I think you'll find there is a major step up in materials. Toyota really needed to step up. Jump in a recent Hyundai Sante Fe or Mazda CX-9 or better still latest 3 and the world has moved forward from the last RAV4. Toyota also has an inconsistency in fonts and poor ergonomics. That seems to be resolved as well (albeit I bet there is still a digital clock in there somewhere - argh).
      Serious kudos should be given to Toyota for coming to the party.
