  • We reviewed the newly updated 2024 BMW X5 to discuss the changes and the V8 and I6 options. While some tech and styling may be questionable, this is one of the brand's best efforts in terms of usability, reliability, and price for a luxury SUV. The Porsche Cayenne, Lexus GX, Audi Q5, Acura MDX Type S, and Genesis QV70 are others to consider.

    I had a 2019 X5 40i and now have a 2023 X7 M60i. Looked at the Cayenne both times but just could not understand why it cost 40-50k more outside of having to pay the Porsche tax. Finally good to see a review that actually tackles that ridiculous delta instead of pretending both cars are equally priced.

    • @cbatiau2528
      @cbatiau2528 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      The Porsche tax is worth it to many people because of (a) how you can customize it to your liking a la carte, and (b) the superior design of driver controls and screens … As a veteran Porsche owner, I can say that it’s possible to spend close to base MSRP and get a fabulous vehicle without loading up on crazy options; for me that happily means all-metal roof, smallest wheels, no “premium” packages, no additional expensive interior options having to do with leather or carbon fiber, etc.

    • @samsharma9207
      @samsharma9207 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@cbatiau2528 I think the argument makes more sense for the 911, but it doesn't hold true as much for the Cayenne. How many Cayenne owners are going down the PTS and Manufactur route with their vehicles? Anecdotal, but I barely see any Cayennes with specialty paint or bespoke options in the way I see 911s with them. In either case, more people skip the tax as the X5 outsells the Cayenne by almost double (and there are plenty of Cayenne allocations unlike the 911).

    • @cbatiau2528
      @cbatiau2528 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@samsharma9207 I doubt that the X5 outsells the Cayenne if the prices are the same. And, actually, E-Hybrid Cayenne allocations are rather sparse right now; the 2024 version appears to be quite popular. Dealerships tend to do the same-old thing with all their cars -- get pano roofs (most people I know don't care for them and/or don't even want them), get large wheels (reduces safety and range and comfort), and put in premium packages with stuff that most people don't need (and often won't even use). In the GLE 450e, I can't get ACC without ordering a huge package of stuff that I don't want/need and spend a bunch of cash for that unneeded/unwanted stuff. When you special-order your own Porsche, you can trim out so much excess and get what you want -- and, for sure, people with huge amounts of disposable income will max out their specially-optioned cars with very unnecessary stuff. But there's a lot of good stuff that you can option in Cayennes that you simple cannot option in an X5 or a GLE, like heated windshield, infrared camera, compass/clock on dashboard, all-metal roof, and (in Taycan) electrochromic glass roofs. I also feel much safer in a Cayenne than in a GLE or an X5 (or an XC90, even) on the road, due to better stability, lower roofline, and lower center-of-gravity.

    Great review! My lease on a 2021 BMW X5M Comp ended last week and I picked up my new 2024 X5 M60i instead. My new M60i is practically loaded with every option you can get and order, including but not limited to exterior carbon fiber mirror caps and side breathers. The power is more than what I need, it rides much better than my old X5MC, and it was much cheaper. I couldn't get the M seat belts, or cooled and heated cup holders, but instead, the M60i has the Integral Active Steering and the 4-wheel steering, which I love very much. I added the anti-roll stabilizer and overall the car handles really well.

    These are very, very good. I rented a pre-facelift one in Germany last summer and although it was a base 30d I found it to be absolutely fantastic over 1,000 KM of mixed city / autobahn driving. We're on our second Cayenne and my wife asked for another because we loved the first one so much but after driving the X5....I'm wondering a bit where my extra money went. That last 5% of an improvement costs you a lot. I'm glad I got the pre-facelift Cayenne as I believe the price jumped even more and the quality is lower.
    Edit: it's funny Jack said that last 5-10%. because I said that before even watching the video. LOL. He completely made my same point. I ordered the pre-facelift Cayenne as a hybrid, because it was better than the X5 45e. But the new 50e is comparable to the Cayenne. If I had to do it again...I'd probably get the BMW. Net net, it is $85k vs. $115k.

Based on my experience, one of the important things you did not mention is, cayenne PCM sucks, Bluetooth connectivity is awful, it does not even come close the any version of iDrive. To me the argument is simple, if you want just the driving experience, go for a cayenne, if you want a vehicle you need to use everyday for life, its x5. I am going back to x5 next year. I owned a 22 MDX Type S w/ Advanced Package, optioned out, upgraded to the PHEV X5 50e for more hp believe it or not. Type S was great, 3rd Acura, great value proposition compared to base X5 40i for same $, HUD, cooled seats, adaptive air suspension, solid motor, had everything, also more rare than base X5, sweet rims, walk away closing rear tailgate, etc…. If I was going to have a car for 5 yrs, would pick Acura for reliability over base X5. For a Type “S” though, performance at 10/10 was slightly weak, + MPG wasn’t great. 50e is well over second faster to 60, faster 1/4 mile, plus way better MPG, but paid about $8K more than MDX. MDX S to base X5, MDX is more reliable, much lower maintenance. Need more performance, go 50e. Downside 50e, more complicated, need to charge, more things to fail

    I bought the sedan version of this car (M550i) because of exactly what you said, I wanted a V8 and nothing else! It is an amazing car and I get near M5 performance for a lot less money and a way better everyday driving experience than the true M car. Oh and as you also said, if you can get these cars a couple of years old, they are an incredible value! I got my 2021 M550i that had an MSRP of $90k for $58k with a BMW certified warranty!
    This car kind of achieves the same thing in the SUV category. I agree that the Cayenne is better but not so much better that it justifies the significant premium. If money was no issue, then I'd get a Cayenne Turbo GT. My wife has the B58 version of this car and it is such a great vehicle! The engine is awesome, the transmission is near perfect and the car is super comfortable with a very capable adaptive suspension to match. No one does luxury SUV's better than BMW at a price that is still somewhat affordable!

    The "lease this car" because of how much it depreciates argument rarely makes any sense. Lease payments are primarily determined by depreciation. And, unless the manufacturer is subsiding the lease program more than the buy/rebate program or you can take advantage of specific tax laws (which are generally not applicable to the typical W2 employee), the lease payments will usually cost you more than the depreciation, otherwise the captive or other finance co. that is leasing you the vehicle would lose money.

      @japanwatchconnectionSo much that isn’t accurate here. If you care about money as you wrote, you don’t pay cash for cars that depreciate with each passing year. Invest that cash in real estate. Also, the dealer sells the cars 2 time after the lease return comes back, they don’t sell a car over and over. You are describing what happens at “Buy Here, Pay Here, lots that repossess cars every few months. Those are profit centers. With 315’s on the rear I have no complaints about the handling. Canyon roads out west are a blast for an SUV. The Bowers and Wilkins sound makes you feel like you’re at a concert. The power is so satisfying. I drive7 is very simple to learn and quick to access the main functions of the car. My only critique is the steering inputs are not quite as smooth as the Cayenne. The MB and Audi competition doesn’t come close to what you get with the M50 in my opinion. I did spend an extra 4k for a 24 month bumper to bumper warranty and maintenance package due to the potential very high service costs associated with owning a vehicle like this. My two cents.

    Personally, I think the best X5 and X6 you can buy is from 2020-2023. It looks amazing, has great drivetrains and features like the B58 and buttons for many things like climate. Also now you can start getting a used one for less than MSRP and hopefully in good condition :D
    That’s the year range I’d like to help get for my dad :)

    Could you do a review of the X3 M40i? You did the base X3 some years back, and the X3M more recently.

    I bought my X5 because of its efficiency. No, fuel cost doesn't matter to me. But I enjoy the BMW tech that gives me more power with less fuel than competitors. I hit 30mpg between la and sf on freeway.
    I'm on Jack's side on that statement. It is very nice to be stopping by gas station once or twice a month is very convenient.

      I drove the 8, bought the 2024 40i. No, fuel costs don’t matter that much to me either, but the six is also quick, more reliable than the 8, lighter, and I love the highway mileage.

      @@DaveP-uv1ml what's interesting is BMW at some point in 2010s began recommending minimum 89 octane. My previous 2009 x5's minimum was 91.
      I havent tested but since 89 is the minimum on 2019 and forward, it would still get the same efficiency, less some power loss i think

    I got a new x6 x40i msport recently, and I'm blown away by the solidity, refinement, and efficiency. Bmw says it has 375hp, but allegedly it has 400-440, and I'm averaging 24mpg in mixed driving with loads of stop and go. My focus st got an average of 21mpg, just lol at the 5k lb tank with 400hp beating it. Everything just works really, really well. Is it a sports car? Nope. Is it fast, frugal, and comfortable? Yes.

    You guys are so right, I debated a Porsche Cayenne vs BMW X5 in 2015. I went with the X5 50 and loved it, owned it for 8 years before trading it in for a Porsche Macan. The main issue I saw was a similar Cayenne was 22k more than an X5 and was smaller. We have a truck now we use for truck stuff, F150 and the Macan for a drivers car. The X5 was the best all around 2 row suv, miss that V8 of that car. Could not recommend the X5 more.

    @savagegeese I’m not one to complain, but if I have to subscribe to your Patreon to see the NSX mini doc I will. Which leads me to the question, will the NSX mini doc be finished and posted before Dec 25, 2024?

    In car infotainment system really peaked at Idrive 7. All the buttons you need daily is easily accessable and you retain the all mightly 1 to 8 fav button and it also retain a sleek minial design. IMO best in car system ever.

      Agree. I have iDrive 7 and I fear next year when I have to switch car. BMW basically had the most praised infotainment ever and throw it out of the window for some gimmicky crap.

      iDrive 8 SUUUUUCCKS! The 8 shortcut buttons are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seats are now have to be turned on / off in software. Manual turning on of low beam headlights and PARKING LIGHTS are in iDrive. Was the turn-style headlight switch too complicated, for BMW? Even the HEATED STEERING WHEEL BUTTON is gone. Won't buy another BMW until BMW undoes iDrive 8 buttonless stupidity.

    If you don’t need the extra room, the X3M is the better buy. $80k vs $120k (X5M) and with a good flash tune is ~800 (crank horsepower). What you miss out on is V8 rumble.

      X3M has crazy performance but comes with tradeoffs in ride quality. It's great but not for everyone. If you don't care about carving canyons or drag racing, X540i is just the best choice as a do-everything commuter.

      Even the X3 M40i rides too firm. The X3M is supposed to be even worse. The base X5 rides very good and with the air suspension it’s sublime.

    Guys, thx for the great content. A couple of weeks ago you weren’t exactly thrilled with the 5 sedan. What’s so different (other than size) that’s makes you rave about the X5 but are lukewarm with the sedan?

    • @scooter5940
      @scooter5940 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @japanwatchconnectionyep. The electrification push may ruin the X5, as it has ruined the new 5. Only so much R&D dollars to go around, and you can’t design a separate body, chassis and suspension for ICE and electric versions.
