4:50 The green house, there’s so much more glass. The visibility is incredible, it feels like an older car. Yeah, that really kicks me in the feels. One thing I miss about older cars is amount of light and space given to occupants. Modern cars, by a combination of safety features like side curtain airbags, side crash structures, are inherently darker spaces by design. Modern car designers make this worse by generally picking a dark interior palette. Net result is feeling like you’re sitting in a tiny cave.
The big windows is definitely something that the Subaru designers got right! I'm really hoping we see a general move in the industry towards larger windows.
@@bradcomis1066you won't, high belt lines and low rooflines will make windows seem smaller. Thick pillars are safety bonuses and full curtain airbags beef them up further.

OMFG!?! Skip the ad?? Nah let him cook!! I had a 16 wrx that i bought new and owned for over 6 years, it was the best car I've ever owned. Had it stage 2 bolt ons with an off the shelf tune, while it wasn't the fastest thing ( couldn't ever take any Infiniti g35/g37 or nissan maxima) it was definately plenty to get you into trouble. Tire setup were pilot sports 4s in the summer and it felt like it was on rails, i never reached the grip limit, and x-ice in the midwest winters and the thing was an absolute tank. After 6 years of ownership it only depreciated $16,000, only mechanical problem i had was the throw out bearing in the clutch fork sticking, had to have 2 clutch replacements under 30k mi. Even though i had been driving manuals for over 10 years. As for practicality one Thanksgiving i placed 4 8' tables and 20 folding chairs in it. The car did everything well, it had personality, it turned into a living thing, the wrx is a truely special car, i genuinely miss it. Thanks Mark and Jack and team for the awesome content.
A '16 stage 2 wrx with bolt ons would put bus lengths on the cars you mentioned.... My fbo is making 420whp, and that's only because I'm trying to save the trans and clutch...
Had a 2017 premium and lemon lawed it due to the throw out bearing, every cold start would cause the car to squel when pressing and depressing the clutch. Such a shame as I loved the damn car.
The WRX engine has way more room to add more power and its way more useable. The GR Corolla valve springs start to fail around 325HP and the differential goes into limp mode too easily. The WRX can get to 380HP with very few mods, and it doesn't have any engine or differential issues.
8:45 correction here, the WRX is 50:50 split with a viscous coupling with the manual gearbox. The automatic has a slightly more rear-bias split. The old CVT had a 45/55 split, but they may changed it a bit. It's still rear bias.

The GRC is still sold at markup because many Toyota dealerships are awful. With that in mind, the WRX is the better buy. Toyota…fix your dealer network, please.
Great video! Excellent tuxmat ad placement! This reminds me of the Evo vs STi comparison of the 2003-2006 timeframe where one was more brutish, and one more edgy. I keep hearing ppl compare the GRC to the STi hatch, but the hatch is really where the comparison stops. It delivers powers more like the EVO and I love it! Having owned both an 05 STi and and 06 EVO 9 I traded the STi for the EVO and one was more a hatchet and the other more a scalpel in the way it delivered power and handling.
@RiptideOnTop I'm pretty sure he knows that therefore he said bhp, what he's trying to convey is Toyota is either over inflating their numbers or Subaru is underrating theirs, something ain't adding up.

I love the the small hatchback formula. My first car was a 1988 Honda CRX si and 2nd car a 1993 Civic hatchback vx. And my next daily will be the 2024 GR Corolla Circuit.
I've test driven both the new wrx (limited) and GR. As you can see in the video, there was only a 3 second lap time difference. The GR was superior but the WRX still competed well. Their drag and trap times are very close too. The GR front looks like a base model corolla and the interior seemed cheaper. The WRX sits lower and actually has better interior materials. Like the video mentioned, the WRX has better seats (I sat only the LTD). The WRX has more room inside while the GR feels a little cramped. I also like the visibility on the WRX. While the GR feels raw and racy, I felt the ride was too rough for daily driving especially in a city with a lot of potholes. The WRX was more comfortable. In the past, people complained the WRX was too immature. The WRX is now the mature car and there are still complaints that they miss the rawness of the old models. I ended up not buying either of these cars but still enjoyed test driving. If you plan to race stock on a track like autocross, the GR is the way to go. But anything else, like daily driving, space, seats, interior, etc, the WRX is superior. I terms of mods, the WRX has the higher ceiling. There's already a national known tuner company in Houston that is making the WRX a 10 second car for under 6k. There have been issues with GR mods including the rear dif overheating and AWD system also overheating (you can google it for more details). If I had to choose, the WRX would be my overall choice.

About a month ago you dish out the Aprils Fools thing... and now we have this Tux mat ad. Excellent work. Appreciate the length you go to for these bits.
I freaking love my GRC. It's my first new car. The only car I've ever had payments on. I can afford it. A financial adviser would probably tell me to sell it. But I love it. It doesn't have armrests. I can't fit a water bottle anywhere. The glove box doesn't lock. But it's a freaking awd manual hatchback. I can rip the handbrake and lock the rear tires. The engine revs. I have to remind myself to be quiet driving home late at night and not idle the car because I don't want my neighbors to hate me. The car just grips. I have yet to reach the limit of grip on a public road in the dry. It just grips the road and accelerates out of corners. Haven't overheated the diff pounding back roads. The visibility sucks. Your seating position is like a school bus. But the sound of the blow off valve just makes me happy.
After watching previous videos, I went out and bought Tuxmats for my car. Two weeks later I woke up in an overturned canoe in the middle of an alfalfa field in Illinois, wearing nothing but glow in the dark handcuffs and a g-string made of candy. 10/10 for Tuxmats.
Purchased the TR this weekend after watching every Savagegeese and other TH-cams on both these cars. This video was the best of the bunch and provides excellent points on both. Drove the WRX 1st, then the GR. I agree with Mark, the GR's powertrain feels way more special. I instantly wanted the GR after the test drive, where the WRX TR felt not much better than my 2015 Focus ST, which I drove 115K over 9 years. I also wanted the hatch over the trunk. After fighting with the Toyota dealer for hours on the final price, which was over sticker, I settled on the Subaru, which was almost $10K cheaper and had .9% financing. I'll be using the car as a daily highway commuter. The service intervals are longer on the WRX, so less time to spend in service. And the backseat and trunk are so much larger than my Focus, so my family now has the option to use the WRX for weekend road trips. My wife likes the more grown -up look of the TR as well, since she'll be driving it as well. I know it's been said in the video and in many other comments below, but I wanted to give my two cents as well. If you want the ultimate in performance and driver feel, get the Type-R/S, or GR. If you want practicality, great performance, and a little specialness that the TR provides, get the WRX and keep your money in the bank making 5% interest. For me, it was the right call.
Excellent comparison. Subaru missed an opportunity here, not putting the STI trans/diffs in, and not running a track pad. I chose the WRX: I got it when I wanted it, at invoice, with no haggling. And here's the kicker for me: I wanted great visibility, comfortable for 4 adults, AND capability. I can tune out the chassis later if I choose to race, or swap in an STI transmission. I can't make the car bigger, or less cramped. And that's what drove me away from the GRC to the WRX.
Awesome video, as always. I especially like that I have driven these cars and know people who own them, and they are within reach. It's fun to see "exotics" tested but really appreciate the more affordable cars being tested as well.
We traded our '18 Civic SI with 82k miles for a '23 base WRX and we paid 29k and got 16k for the Civic. I absolutely love the WRX, the fa24f is extremely smooth, it's a blast to launch, great visibility, spacious enough for the family and it handles very well. The MPG isn't anywhere as good as the Civic SI, but otherwise we are very happy.
@g78912 I would recommend starting at 3k RPM, getting used to slipping the clutch while feeding the gas, and then gradually going up by 500 RPM. The hardest I have launched my car was 5k RPM, and the redline comes up really fast. You can do 6k launches, but it will eventually damage your clutch and drive train. Good luck 👍!
I own a VB and have driven a GR on track and on the road. My take: if it's a track car GR all day. if it's your daily, the WRX is unquestionably the better choice
Not at all. Pretty sure they showed the wrx crank hp. Plenty of other dyno runs online show 210-220 wheel hp on the wrx/wrx tr (same engine and trans either way) wrx can't even beat a fwd Elantra N off the line and I've beat plenty with an elantra N. But I couldn't beat a gr corolla for shit. Only time I was able to win against one was at the drag strip with radials.
@@ViaticalGenie4Elantra N is underated from the factory and is 100 lbs lighter than the lightest WRX trim. Its no surprise its quicker. Then again, you have to factor in price difference. I got my 23' base WRX for $28,500 OTD while the EN would realistically be around 35-37K OTD (state dependant)

All in all, it’s a great buy for most folks. I’ve owned and driven quite a few cars for my age, so I may have different expectations and demands from a do-it-all type of car. I still think I’d be happier in a Type R, but I also find it difficult throwing the additional 20k-or-so after taxes to make the switch. The BRZ is also another compelling option, albeit much smaller (less “do-it-all” for potentially more smiles per mile).
Thanks for reading my monologue. 😅 Love what the geese put out, as always. 🪿
Enjoy it, I have a 2023 RS3 with APR catback
This platform was never rallied by Subaru so technically its not a "rally" platform. Does have the heritage though where the Toyota doesn't. Though Toyota did Rally the Celica in the 80's and the Yaris of recent years, still not the same. The Corolla Hatch is also one of the ugliest cars on the road.
@@eppyzToyota ran a rally prepped version of the E110 Corolla for Group A in the late 90s. As well as the early 80s RWD Corollas ran in group A and N by drivers like Per Eklund.
dude your monologue inspired me
@@eppyz "The Corolla hatch is also one of the ugliest cars on the road." I don't want to know what you think the best looking car on the road is, then, because it's probably a Nissan Juke or a Buick Encore.

The green house, there’s so much more glass.
Yes well said I agree. Especially the back seats.
@@Hawk7886 Sad, all the safety nannies got their way and drivers have less fun for it
@@mikeydude750 yeah those nannies that hate seeing their loved ones killed in accidents, weird. People with families tend to have their car purchases influenced primarily by safety ratings, and the tests that develop the ratings are constantly getting harder. It wouldn't be such a huge problem if cars were reasonably sized, but there are so many massive trucks and SUVs running around the old style sedan needs to be a tank to survive a collision.
You bring a tear to me eye. Well said....it really is a very special car.
How the fuck was it slower than a maxima? They’re not even fast, my brother has one. Lol
@@ColeWorldNoSandwichI have a 2019 and it's on its third throwout bearing. Total crap. Damn I want a GRC so badly.
The Tuxmat portion was brilliant, lol!
The WRX engine has way more room to add more power and its way more useable. The GR Corolla valve springs start to fail around 325HP and the differential goes into limp mode too easily. The WRX can get to 380HP with very few mods, and it doesn't have any engine or differential issues.
...yet it still will not perform as cool as the GR !
@@gkrebs6636what ??? That's a huge torque end and also lot more horsepower for just adding a tune.
8:45 correction here, the WRX is 50:50 split with a viscous coupling with the manual gearbox. The automatic has a slightly more rear-bias split. The old CVT had a 45/55 split, but they may changed it a bit. It's still rear bias.
Was that for the VB? I remember the VAs being 45/55 for the MT and 40/60 for the CVT.
Funny how that rear bias works when tested 24:50
60/40 cvt
45/55 cvt with rear bias. However the GT has VTD variable torque distribution. So it can send more to the rear , more than 55%

nah, they are made lean to save fuel. but the engines run a risk of overheating and breaking down prematurely. cold air intakes make it worse.
The savagegeese leader board is very impressive 👏

So the corrrola claims 300bhp and the wrx claims 271 bhp. The dyno says differently.
That’s the engine hp, dynos test how much is actually being delivered to the wheels
@RiptideOnTop I'm pretty sure he knows that therefore he said bhp, what he's trying to convey is Toyota is either over inflating their numbers or Subaru is underrating theirs, something ain't adding up.
Dyno graphs are available online and they confirm the manufacturer claimed power figures for both to be accurate.

I'd really like to see a video comparing the GR Corolla and the GR Yaris! If that's something you can make happen I'd be so stoked!
I love my 2022 wrx. Great video. I suggest test driving both of them. Heads up seeing a VB in person is much different than pictures or videos

About the only positive it seems to these guys
The GR would be a great daily, but they seem to have a problem of burning down on the side of a highway, and Toyota doesn't seem interested in figuring out why, or warranty them because they went over 85 mph in the computer data. They resolve this issue it is a great value

Does the WRX void it's warranty if you drive it over 85 mph, like the GR ?

Awesome video and analysis by Jack and Mark. I ordered tux mats for my wife for mothers day because they support you.
That Tuxmat ad was awesome! Love this channel.
In this comparison, it all comes down to which car has the TuxMats.
"two pounds of beef and cheddar"
Well my day is made
Purchased the TR this weekend after watching every Savagegeese and other TH-cams on both these cars.
For me, it was the right call.
no way the gr corolla still has a markup got mine for 39k
That Tuxmat segment was truly an immersive experience!
quite possibly the greatest ad ive ever seen. this should be in the superbowl.
Arby's marketing team needs to give you a call.
Driving a GR Corolla to Björk is just what I needed to see.
Just got my ‘24 Limited. I’m a pretty new manual driver, how do you launch it?
@g78912 I would recommend starting at 3k RPM, getting used to slipping the clutch while feeding the gas, and then gradually going up by 500 RPM. The hardest I have launched my car was 5k RPM, and the redline comes up really fast. You can do 6k launches, but it will eventually damage your clutch and drive train. Good luck 👍!
I own a VB and have driven a GR on track and on the road. My take: if it's a track car GR all day. if it's your daily, the WRX is unquestionably the better choice
Considering the dyno numbers, Subaru is basically marketing the whp for the WRX?? That's interesting.
@@ViaticalGenie4 How come the GRC's was much lower then? With it being 300 hp on paper the 262 made sense to the wheel.
@alamsas2 yes that does. I'm pretty sure these guys are biased. The whole time they were acting like subarus are impressive. They're horrible. I've owned a few and the only time I enjoyed them was in the snow. Track days were garbage. Upgraded brakes and coilovers helped but I'd rather drive a truck around a track.
