I rented a new 2024 X5 for my vacation a few days ago. I also own a new 2024 Lexus. The X5 was better. Not by alot, but it was definitely better. It was SO fast, quiet, the sound system was phenomenally good and the mild hybrid worked well. Also the best feature I liked about it was it would lock and unlock if you walked away from it or towards it. All that being said, I can confirm the Lexus quality and reliability is a real thing. The engine is buttery smooth and will probably last forever. So the question is do you want a flashy, fun, fast car with questionable reliability or do you want a buttery smooth engine with ok everything but with INFINITE reliability. This may be cliche but, the BMW is great for a lease or rental, Lexus for purchasing and owning.
I currently own a new Lexus and have owned/rented new BMW before, Lexus is definitely a luxury car. Anyone who says otherwise I can confidently say they never probably owned one and are speaking from inexperience. Lexus is just as quiet as the BMW, the materials fit and finish is just as good if not better than BMW - - especially the paint quality, the paint on the Lexus is phenomenal and thicker than normal paint. Panel gaps, material quality, they are definitely luxury. The engine and the transmission on a Lexus while not as fast as the BMW, transcends what it means to be luxury in terms of reliability and quality of build. The Japanese just make an extremely reliable and buttery smooth product that they refine over years and years of fine tuning. That's why their product cycle is so long (same car, same power train with gradual upgrades over years). Being the owner and driver of many luxury brands, I speak from experience. I had an X5 years ago. They're fun to drive when new/healthy however I'm convinced that when a BMW gets to 70k miles on it someone in Germany presses a button and the car starts bleeding oil all over the place along with valves, sensors going haywire. I dunno. I've also read where the X5 depreciates very quickly whereas the Lexus holds resale value much better overall. I know the new X5's apparently have improved but I'm very scared of getting back into one after my last experience.
my father-in-law has an X5 he spends his time in the garage, every week a new problem, my brother has an RX 450h he never sees the garage only for servicing
The X50e is far superior. Better engine, better seats, smoother ride, better electric range, air suspension, better transmission, much much better tech. BMW X5 no doubt. If anything the Mazda CX-90 or 70 should be compared to the X5 because it also runs on an inline 6-turbo. Both vehicles have refined interior and chassis designs. The whole “Toyota makes reliable car” is questionable with their new models being recalled like left and right (yes, Lexus modes too). The only strong point of Toyota is out of the picture here.
The whole "Toyota makes reliable cars" is completely irrelevant to the customer base anyway. those cars are either gonna get leased or bought by upper class folk that will sell them after 100k miles. Both cars make those 100k without much trouble.
Toyota doesn't even make the top 10 most called car brands list (ford > chrysler > bmw > mb > gm > jag / lr > honda > vw > hyundai/kia > tesla) and the 'out of the picture' reliability is still showcased in JDP/CR studies @dosko9980 irrelevant to customers? Can't fix the ugly front or overdone rear pillar thing on the Lexus. If you're already paying that much, you'd be insane to not just pay a little more for massively better performance in the BMW.
I actually traded in my Lexus for the a pre-owned g05 x5. Owned it for about 1.5 years now and it’s 5 years old at this point. Reliability has been solid. Something I cannot say with my past bmw ownership experiences, but the newer bmws (in my experience) have been holding up well.
True, but if you don't mind a used X5 thats a few years old, that will represent good value. IMO BMW's are better driving vehicles, but they depreciate like a stone vs. Toyota / Lexus.
Why not lease both then? If you can't afford these cars or find their maintenance or depreciation to be high, you are better off getting a used corolla😅. At this price point and segment, comfort, performance & features >>> money spent on fuel or maintenance / depreciation.
I was looking at the RX plug in. I decided to go with X5 50e. Much better experience overall. The gas engine feels solid and gives you plenty of confidence on the road even without adding the electric motor to the equation. I usually get in the high 30 miles of electric range in mildly cold temperature (California) and able to reach 88 mph in just electric. I don’t characteristically drive in “gentle mode” and so even in electric only it feels like it has more than adequate power to merge on the freeway or sprint from a stop sign. Over 100 miles trip with battery depleted going up and down large hills I got just over 26 mpg. On this trip the battery would always charge to 1-2 miles (hybrid mode) and keep it ready for full horse power and torque as needed. Starting with fully charged battery on this same stretch I achieved over 40 mpg which is better than what I get in my Lexus ES300h (rated at 44 mpg but my heavier foot gets 37 mpg). Charging it at its max rate of 32 amps (220V) gets me close to 40 electric miles in just over 3 hours. Most of the trips are short (less than 30 miles) and with just 3k miles on the odometer the car has been filled up only 3 times in its life - one by the dealership and two by me. When driving during daytime one problem that I have is the reflection of the trim that is around the vents into the side mirrors when looking at the side mirrors. I don’t notice it all the time but sometime it can be annoying. Overall great car, quality seems to be there, and driving experience is on the next few levels when compared to the RX. If you can spend the extra money then I think is worth it. Cheers!
As someone who works at the dealer, you see many x5s come for service, I see a bunch of off-road driven x5s some days, some loaded up for camping, some owners do tow heavy, they're Ms for track days too, it all depends where your located, the dealer I work is between cities and suburbs so you see all kind of different x5s used for stuff, x5 is definitely not a city car, people use them that way sure, but they have a great tow capacity and with offroad pack you get 11 inch ground clearance and locking diff, variable transferase, and factory off-road tires. SUVs are just trendy, you'll see jeeps in the city too so calling one just a city car makes no sense, all cars now days can be found anywhere driven by anyone
Yeah, I think some people that buy these probably don’t have any intention on towing. But, with our X5 we have towed some snowmobiles and it has a tow mode which is nice. Also, it gives you a tow rating of 7,500 pounds which is pretty good for the class.
Not going to the lie the Lexus was really nice. I had the rx350h as a long term loaner and it was very smooth and comfortable even in a mid trim. Few gripes like the the center console being very tacky but otherwise I thought it was really nice

I would choose the Lexus all day every day, no matter how "good" BMW might be, because in terms of reliability we all know the BMW is nowhere near Lexus.
Would choose the Lexus RX in Copper Crest as well and the absolute first thing I'd do is turn off the eye sight sensor. Drove a newer loaner recently and it annoyed the crap out of me but after turning it off along with the lane assist, it was a wonderful ride.
You have to keep turning it off every ignition.... In EU it's a mandatory feature now, so it will be in any new car, which means you have to live with it.
The most important thing for a car is its durability and how often it breaks down. For these facts, Lexus is number 1. You may ask the question any car mechanics.
They have a terrible spec on the BMW. I ordered mine with Interlagos Blue Metallic II on 21s with full black Napa leather. It’s stunning. Turns more heads than my old M3. Nearly perfect car. I drive 100% EV in the city, get 550 miles of range, and it’s quicker than my V8 M3 in a straight line. Also, the tech is crazy. Gesture and voice control work well enough that I never take my hands off the wheel. The air conditioned massage seats are amazing on road trips. Disagree on charging - full charge took me 30.5 hours. I had to get a 220V circuit pulled to level 2 charge. That takes 3.5 hours for a full charge.
BMW for sure unless you just can't spend the extra.......in which case you should probably just get a regular hybrid RX lol. The reliability diff isn't even as large as it used to be, the B58/B48 era Bimmers are so much better than most people think.
you can’t go wrong with either, but the Lexus will hold its residual value 10X better and cost you thousands less in maintenance over the years. I worked for BMW for 5 years, they always come back into the shop and the maintenance costs are ridiculous. Get the Lexus, trust me. BMW’s look, drive, and feel amazing, no flight about it - but they’re insanely unreliable and will leave you stranded sooner or later. Most towed brand of all time
Nice review guys, the only problem I would have with the BMW is service costs and reliability. I currently have a RX450h V6 yr 2020 model and it’s fantastic and reliable. BMW’s are expensive to maintain in the long run. My only beef is that Lexus went to a 4 cylinder motor in 2023, I will keep my current RX450h for a long time since I don’t like the 4 cylinder.
x5 is better in every way (maybe even reliability, zf8 speed, b58 and bmws phev system have been around for like 10 years) other than maintenance costs
@@isurumw6119 its obvious you havent driven a new rx hybrid. the 4 cylinder sounds and feels like its out of a corolla (because it is) and the whole package is just nowhere near as refined, luxurious, athletic or intuitive as the x5.

Cheers!
Please come back after 100K miles :)

Most towed brand of all time
lexus wins exterior and price, and BMW wins everything else. I'd take pre LCI x5 45e than rx450h.
I think the RX exterior to be one of the ugliest luxury SUV's. X5 looks much better to me.
The Lexus rx 500h would’ve been a better comparison with the 2.5l turbo
think it's plugin vs plugin here for comparison
No it wouldn’t. No lexus RX can compete with the best
Nice joke😂
And depreciation.
@@xzst thats why you lease it
@@isurumw6119 its obvious you havent driven a new rx hybrid. the 4 cylinder sounds and feels like its out of a corolla (because it is) and the whole package is just nowhere near as refined, luxurious, athletic or intuitive as the x5.
Last time i saw a phev BMW, it was sitting at copart, totaled by a 25k repair bill.
Greetings from Toronto! My father in law recently got a new RX450h.
I am choosing Lexus any day- bmw owner
I picked the BMW X5 Xdrive 40i and I’m very happy with it..
