Silver and Black: The Best Spider-Man Spinoff Never Made - Canned Goods

- In 2013, Sony Pictures embarked on a journey to create a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. One of the announced films for this series was set to be a female team-up film called Glass Ceiling.
In 2017, the first details would emerge for the film, which now had a new title: Silver and Black. This was a buddy movie staring Silver Sable and Black Cat being hunted by villains like Mendel Stromm and the Scorpion; in addition to featuring a healthy heap of cameos from Spidey's other friends and foes.
Shortly after the film's revival, Gina Prince-Bythewood would sign onto the project to direct. Though, the project would fall after heavy pre-production had already been completed.
Today, we'll walk through the development, plot and cancellation of Silver and Black.

honestly going with a Black Cat film would have been better as Black Cat for the audience is more recognisable than the much more obscure Madam Web.

Although Black Cat and Silver Sable makes more sense and the characters would probably be in their costumes 50% of the time
@@BrontoSmilodon1Even as you say that, the Catwoman being in movies thing was a thing in the 2000s and as a close analogue, most people from back then would be curious to see Marvel's take on that Archetype even without knowing her which is a bigger draw than you'd suspect.
Heck even the latest Batman movie had a Catwoman, with the right casting would already draw attention to those who don't know the character so bit of a weak point in terms of evidence on your end.

Outside of Venom (which I get because he's a very popular character) WHO wants to see any other of these other side Spider-Man characters get their own movie not only without Spider-Man but seemingly doesn't even have Spider-Man in their universes
I don't. I think having a solo Venom movie that changed his origin to be separate from Spider-Man (but he still looks like a black Spider-Man for some reason) was stupid, too.
I guess Sable and Black Cat work on their own? But I would prefer them to be related to a SM story. Having Spidey villains have solo movies is beyond stupid. Fuck Sony.
this one would be awesome, I wish it came out in 2015 so we could have maybe andrew, or just be set in his universe. Not having sm is bad but could work with good movies, wich sony is struggling with, they also can't choose the right characters. like, seriously, i dont think people care about morbius or some other goofy shit they wanna make

This was the only Sony Spider-Man adjacent project that I ever had the slightest bit of anticipation for. It actually sounded really good, unlike anything else they've released.

With the super soldier serum/Cap DNA being established in Secret Invasion and with Kingpin officially being MCU now, they can actually do the best version of the Black Cat story from the Animated Series. The animated series was the only medium that did Felicia justice and didn't make her some boring AF Catwoman clone.
There’s an alternate universe where this movie came out and was a sleeper hit and the sequels are just coming out now
I could see it now, the second movie could have been something like ‘Silver and Black and the Wild Pack’ with the super team taking on the wild pack moniker.
Or maybe they would have split them up for separate spin-offs and done a Silver & Fortune movie and a standalone Black Cat kind of deal.
Honestly, why couldn’t Sony just make a live-action Spider-Woman movie and build off a franchise from there? If they did that, then Venom could’ve gotten his spider logo!

Honestly, these Spider-Man related characters getting movies where Spidey either doesn’t exist or is unconnected just makes me think they should be in the MCU. Black Cat to meet a post No Way Home Peter just feels like it would work.

It was always the plan to put this out around the same time as Madame Web because I always suspected Madame Web came from the ashes of this movie.

This is surprisingly decent. I think if it was made these days it would fail because Sony would somehow mess it up but if it was released back then I think it would’ve been successful. It’s also interesting about the villain putting Ai chips in peoples brains. Art imitates life eh?

Silver and Black is the only Spider-Man spinoff that I was interested in seeing.
Honestly I am glad this movie was canceled mostly because I don’t trust Sony especially with there terrible track record as of late, and honestly after Madame web I don’t want black cat and silver sable to be touched by them at least in my opinion.

There are more popular Spider-Man related characters in this script alone than there are in the entire Venom-Verse. As it is now, the movie would've been B or C tier, but if it was punched up a little, I could see it being pretty good.
This movie sounds awesome.truth be told I don’t like the concept of separating Black cat from spider-man himself. That’’s one of my favorite marvel ships ever! I’m not a Mary Jane fan myself. We need Felicia in a movie alongside spider-man. I stand by that statement and I really want to see it get made someday. I would never say that you can’t make a good Black cat project without Spider-man but I will never love the idea of them being separated from each other. However this script does have potential and I always enjoy your reports. Thank you for sharing this with us.

We did get Liz who and in Homecoming and Scorpion was teased in the mid credits scene for that same film.
The actor for Scorpion in that movie is so good, too! I *really* hope he gets to don the suit at some point.

I honestly don’t get why Sony likes to make a movie solely about a Spider-Man villain while Spider-Man himself is nowhere in sight. More often than not, they never work.
But then again, they could also still be good, like The Joker (2019).
Because Sony leased part of the copyright for Spider-Man to Marvel and Disney, and kept the rights to the villains, and they are squeezing everything possible out of them.
I’m not a huge friend of Christopher Yost he has a pretty good talent on his record I will say, but the way he wrote some thing like some lines and delivery. It’s just baffling or not good like for example the Netflix series Cowboy Bebop adaptation.

Sony should just make horror movies with their Spider-Man villain characters like imagine a Mysterio movie like Mike Flanagans Occulus or a Carnage movie from the director of the Terrifier movies
It is unlikely that a large audience with children will go to this and not make merch.

I wholeheartedly agree. Venom 1 and 2 are peak camp. Madame Web is a train wreck that’s funnier than most comedies. The only one that hasn’t worked for me was Morbius- which of the Sony Marvel stuff is your favorite?

I find it odd.... and dumb... that Madame Web got a movie first.... but Black Cat (a character who's been on 99% of animated series, videogames, a fan favorite for almost 60 years).... and Sony doesn't really have the guts to greenlight a project
Honestly i think its a solid script I would just change the chip angle, like instead he needs her DNA and not a chip in her body, you could even change the robot guy in the beginning of the movie into a man spider, same dialogue would work tarantula and scorpion could still be cybernetic and just be henchmen on loan from Osborn. That's really all i would change. I do like the black cat as hacker name though. I would keep that

I really don’t think a Cinematic Universe would work for Spider-Man as I really think Andrew Garfield should have been the MCU Spider-Man and I’m not really this would ether as I seem to recall that Spider-Man and Venom get sent to another universe by Dr Octopus and Mr Negative as that’s where Black Cat and Silver Sable take over.
I guess you know about the Beetlejuice sequel coming I wondering if you could find the original script and the cancelled sequel to Tim Burton’s Planet of the apes on why it didn’t get made and also the original script for Batman Returns and Forever that being Billy Dee Williams as Two Face and Robin Williams as the Riddler

You are correct- I was actually waiting for somebody to bring this up.
The script goes out of its way to specify Witter as Stunner. If I had to guess why they made that change, maybe it's because they didn't want 2 characters named Spider Woman on that team to avoid confusion? But at that point, why wouldn't you just have Angelina instead of Witter? It's a *very* strange situation, for sure.

Both Sony & WB seem to be run so backwards, releasing trash movies like Flash & Madam Web, while scarpping potentially good movies like Coyote vs. ACME, and Madame Web.
There has to be some way they could have gotten Garfield back as Spider-Man in these movies, granted quality wise he'd probably look at these idiots who made Madame Web or Mobius and wipe his ass with it.
The expansion of the more ground level criminals like Chameleon and Tombstone makes me wanna see this, but it's Sony so he'll probably be in one misleading trailer shot and be cut. All this sounds good on paper for an interesting film but yeah let's make Madame Web instead......

I kinda think basing a Cinematic Universe around one super hero, is a bit of a bad idea. As you'll start to run out of ideas, unlike Marvel as a whole, where you have countless characters to play with.
I don’t disagree, but I also think that if any hero has the side characters to sustain a universe, Spider Man is one of the *very* few that you could arguably pull off.
That script has so many Yost related problems I don't know where to begin.... there are too many cameos, too many locations... you combined an international mercenary AND A LOCAL CAT BURGLER, WHERE SHOULD THE MOVIE BE SET, YOST?!... anyway, too many villains and the wrong villains while we're at it. Even barring "we're using these random Black Cat powers instead of, say. the interesting jinx powers because", you have a list of crafty criminal Spider-man villains and a list of the utter powerhouses that can beat the crap out of Spider-man without trying.
Which villains should you use, Yost? Chameleon, Tombstone, SCORPION?
And Stromm, why him of all people? He appeared in one issue where he was killed by Norman Osborn and he showed up in Spider-man 1 to be killed by Osborn. Alistair/Spencer Smythe, Miles Warren, Otto Octavius, no, use the guy who's known for two things: 1 Being Osborn's lackey and 2 being dead.

I don't have any problems with Spiderman spin off movies, providing they make sense and are well written. If Black cat, Morbius, Silver Sable etc can have solo comics without Spiderman, then why not solo movies?

But why did you colour Cat’s hair black? Was it supposed to be black in the movie?
The script specifies that her hair is jet black. My best guess is that they did that so you’d better be able to tell her and Silver apart during action scenes.
But I couldn’t *not* have her with the white hair- it’s such an iconic part of her look. So that’s why her hair is white in the flashbacks and black in the ‘present’ portions.
We could've had this instead of Madame Web 🥲
