- In 2009, Marvel was looking to expand its Cinematic Universe.
After the major wins of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk, and movies like Thor and The Avengers on the Horizon, they were looking to future-proof. One result of this initiative was a first draft of a Doctor Strange origin movie that is totally different from the 2016 film.
This version of the movie saw Strange learning the art of magic under the watchful eye of the Ancient One, encountering colorful characters like Karl Mordo and Benjamin Wong, and trying to solve a murder that involves Dormammu, Shuma Gorath, and the end of the world.
So today, we'll walk through the development, plot and evolution of the original plans for Doctor Strange.

This sounds 100% like an early 2000's Avi Arad production
This is so true. But I gotta say, the Avi Arad Marvel stuff has such an oddly specific feel to it. I don't know if it's necessarily a good thing but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't hit me with some sort of fond nostalgia.
@@HemmasStudios_ Exactly, what made me think of the Avi Arad era were the weird creative choices around the edges, mainly the fact that the Sanctum was a restaurant, and Wong was a partying bachelor that almost became Stephen step-son. To me those kind of changes feel like the changes made to "modernize" Dr Doom in the first Fantastic Four movie or the changes made to Electro in TASM 2.
However... It dealing more with demons, the mindless ones and the Vishanti, was oddly more faithful to the source material than what we got in the first movie as much as I loved it.
Strangely (pun intended), I think a lot of the elements from this script would have been perfect for Sam Raimi.

im glad we got the version we got, but its always interesting to see new spins and adaptations by others. This version sounds a bit too late 2000s for me

I absolutely love these what if?? videos. Kind of cool to see what could have been.
I mean, what we got was pretty trash aside from some cgi sequences.

Anyway Del Toro JL dark had been leaked and i read it.
I won't deny that it sounds interesting, but at the same time, with everything they were throwing into it, it also sounds extremely cluttered. The eye, the orb, the book, there was just way too much going on. To me, it would have bogged down the film.
I couldn't agree more. The plot had a ton of mechanics that were all individually complicated.
@@HemmasStudios_ Yeah, to me an origin story shouldn't be that complex. The Doctor Strange we got had the right amount of stakes without having to throw in all these plot crucial relics. We got the eye and the time stone, and that was about it.
And to that point, I think the way they combined they eye and the time stone was a really elegant way to streamline things without bogging everything down in too much lore!
Yeah, the first film was a great way to introduce Strange and magic to people that knew nothing of him. This one seems to require prior knowledge to keep up with the clutter.
@@ShadowPhoenix82 Yeah. No doubt I would have found it entertaining, but I would have also been lost on what a lot of this stuff was.
Some part of me thinks this script and the script for that animated Dr. Strange movie were least passed around the same people.
I would have cast James Hong as the Ancient One and Danny Devito as the Count
This would have made that exchange between Doctor Strange and Sinister Strange a lot more sense.
The Donna Strange call back made its way into Multiverse of Madness
Fun fact: Marvel also planned a Donna death scene for the first movie that got cut. By hook or by crook- Marvel must have really wanted her in there!

No, it isn't. It's an incomprehensible mess that throws the viewer into the deep-end, has garbage pacing and more set-pieces than nuance.
@@_OUTOFBOUNDS_ I mean outside of. Steven breaking his hands and going to kamar-taj and the trippy visuals what do you remember from that movie? It's rather forgettable that's why Multiverse of Madness was so much better
@@nicwinsteadart5330 Atleast I could understand what was going on in the actual movie we got. This felt like five different scripts thrown into one with no cohesion whatsoever. I'll take a competent but bland film over grandiose gibberish any day

Interesting. I love the first Strange movie, as does my friend and her mom whom aren't really Marvel fans. But this was very interesting to hear! Thank you for sharing this! I'd love to hear a similar first draft of the second recent movie

Yeah he was too much like Iron Man; snarky, arrogant and appears humble only to be a douche to people. It pissed me off when he was finally let in to the temple to train and then he went about stealing stuff.
Eh, the DTV animated feature is better.
Despite it's disconnection with MCU...the history is better suited to the OG Dr. Strange. The comic book lore is almost all there. Now they are diluiting it to better suit up with all this marvels movies. I don't know...in what if storyline , this storyline would be cool

I totally agree. I feel like Strange is consistently the best written character in the MCU.
I'm not, especially M.o.M. Disney-Marvel did Sam Raimi a huge disservice by saddling him with subpar writers, forcing him to make America Chavez integral to the plot, and compelling him to repeatedly overhaul the movie. They should have just given him the level of freedom that Jon Favreau had on Iron Man 1.

I love your content man! I’m always interested in hearing about discontinued cancelled movies. Please consider doing more X-men content specifically Wolverine. I’ve heard a lot of wild things about all the Wolverine movies they were making they got scrapped, including the Logan movie which was at first going to have a lot more tie ins and cameos of other X-men universe mutants. But were later cut due to the studio wanting Logan movie to be more of a stand alone movie less tied in with the multiple timeline

I found the early draft of The Wolverine script penned by David Aronofsky, it is more comic accurate.
-the wolverine is the only mutant in that script
-Lord Yashida is remain death from early to the end of script
-the story focused on the leadership of Black Clan, secret society of Japanese warrior who controls Japan
-Lord Yashida met Logan in Pacific war and they had a duel.
-from that Duel, Yashida considered Logan as his Succesor
-there are two men who wanted the throne of black Clan, son of Yashida (shingen Yashida) and Bastard son of Shingen (Kenuichio Harada aka Silver Samurai)
Wait, hold up, where's the kitchen sink? I was sure I've seen it somewhere near...
This Dr strange version was soooo good I wish marvel did this instead.
Nice video! I like this version of the movie than the 2016's, even though I did find it decent other than the cast for Ancient One. Any chance you can do video on cancelled 2008's Green Arrow: Escape from the Super Max? It's mostly about Oliver Queen escaping prison from crime he did not commit, and there's variety of superheroes and obscured villains in the script.
Escape from Supermax is one of the first lost movie scripts I ever encountered in the wild- it holds a certain sentimental value. I’d really like to cover it at some point!

I’m a MASSIVE Snyder Cut fan (also a MASSIVE BvS defender), and I think that the fact Part 2 and 3 will never release is one of the biggest dropped balls in modern moviemaking. I’m sure I’ll wind up doing a video about it at some point :P

Ok phase 2 started with Doctor strange an neurosurgeon turning into a sorcerer fighting against Dormanu and his Deciple Baron mordo once a socerer supereme got corrupt through by the book of darkhold.First it will be a solo story about him with a little references of other characters slowly slowly we will connect to the larger universe.
