- In 2004, Halo almost became a movie.
Bungie and Microsoft teamed up with Hollywood to bring the story of Master Chief, Cortana, and the Covenant to the big screen, with the help of Producer Peter Schlessel. Despite their best efforts and an extremely promising development, warring studios and massive egos led to the movie's cancellation.
The movie was set to be a co-production between 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures. Alex Garland, best known for 28 Days Later, wrote the excellent initial pitch. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the minds behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy, were executive producers on the film. To direct, the film initially tapped Guillermo del Toro, before settling on a pre- District 9 Neill Blomkamp. Not only was the talent behind this film extraordinary, they were also all Halo fans- which makes this movie's cancellation all the more heartbreaking.
So today, we'll walk through the development, plot and cancellation of Peter Jackson's Halo.

Interestingly, they reused the sets they had built for District 9. So, in a strange way, they kinda DID make that Halo movie.
Rothman has a well-documented of hatred sci-fi films and being quite the cheapskate. It's incredible no one attempted to beat him to a bloody pulp out of frustration of the man
I mean it only makes sense that the person who requested Deadpool’s mouth gets sewn shut also hated Sci-Fi films. It’s wild because outside of genre film I think he’s a great producer.
Truly heartbreaking, it could’ve been the first great video game movie to break the curse, and one of the greatest L’s ever
Of all the movies I’ve ever covered, Halo is one of the few that I think about a lot. A hypothetical Halo movie trilogy would have been so wild.
This movie would've proved that Peter Jackson is an EPIC GAMER! And Jackson likely would've made a cameo as a random Spartan who is shot after 5 seconds.
Hopefully his spartan would be eating a carrot :P
The story of that canceled movie sounds pretty cool just like the video games. It Obviously follows up the story from combat evolved. Maybe the next video you should do isIs the original 1st draft of Transformers 2007 film written by John Rogers(catwoman, Jackie chan adventures) before The final script written by 2 writers Alex kurtzman and Roberto orci Which their story is the final version of the 2007 Transformers movie

Oh man im so disappointed this got canned, i love weta’s work and heartbroken that those props had to go to waste. I love the script its so truthful to the original story
It really was the perfect storm of factors between the script, creatives involved, and WETA- I really think it had the potential to be a truly massive Lord of the Rings style film trilogy that was also beloved by fans.
Well you got to keep in mind that some of those props ended up being used in District 9.
This would have been not cruse at all, this would break the video game movie cruse.

I find it kinda funny Paramount said no to a Halo movie, and now they're gonna put out a TV show.
I do wish we got to see this film because the script sounded basically like a one to one translation of combat evolved, and given who was behind it, I think it could have been the best video game adaptation to date.
This is so eloquently said. I 1000000% agree. It could have been the first video game movie to transcend from being a great ‘video game movie’ to being a straight up great movie, period.
It was a great adaption of the game, but if you knew nothing about Halo, it’d still be an engaging story. Total missed opportunity IMO

Funny that the show sucked along with Star Trek and the Halo games have been a mixed bag since 3 in the eyes of the fans.

We had Doom 2005 with the Rock.
He was the face of Xbox at the time and Halo was also the face of Xbox at that time.
Mix all that together with how Peter Jackson made King Kong in 05 etc. Now....
Could you imagine if in that same year we got a Halo movie based on the book 'First Strike' with Joseph Staten backing it with Chief in his Mk 5 armor, classic purple Cortana, Sgt Johnson, and we get even Michelle Rodriguez as one of the female marines , the Rock could have became a famous marine or character, etc.
Love your videos, I can never get enough of cancelled movie stories, and you're one of the best channels that covers those stories.

I think the character of Johnson was also just an homage to Sgt. Apone from Aliens, and every other hard-nosed sergeant we’ve seen in sci-fi and military movies. It’s become a cliché.

Sometimes i have Heard this news about the bioshock movie but i didnt know the details & how why is cancelled?
Ive never taken the time to look into the script before but it shocks me how both good and cursed this is. They remove johnson entirely which is the biggest sin, the relationship with foehammer is an odd choice, all the random bits with silva seem odd as well since the action packed tensity of the odsts sections of the book would be much more engaging. Oh and they can have johnson fall out of the locker at the end of the movie inside the pelican
Hey everyone, I’m an amateur filmmaker and much like everyone watching this video i am disappointed this script never got made. So that’s why I am in the process of recruiting a team of animators and voice actors to turn this script into an animated film!
The halo tv show coming next year could be just that

I love this script. It reminds me of a melding between the game and The Flood novel.
I was actually only recently made aware of the difference between the first game and The Flood novel... and when I found out, my level of respect for this script grew even greater

This movie would have worn me out. That is so much _stuff_ to put into a 2 hour movie. It seems this would work better as a mini series (so you’d have breaks between the action), as it’s pretty episodic anyways.
It really makes me wonder how the Halo TV show will work out- especially if they adapt the games

Bioshock is definitely happening, and I know exactly when it’s going to happen. Unfortunately, it’s not the next one. :(
For anyone who’s interested: an Australian based podcast did a documentary about the ‘unmaking’ of the Halo movie, and even adapted the script into an audio drama with professional voice actors. I never played the story but man if this was anything close to it I needa play it and see a movie of it lol
The script is just about the best version of the game’s plot you can get as a movie. The story of the first game is a bit more complex and some events are re ordered, but this is pretty darn close. Combat Evolved as a game plays pretty well 20 years later, all things considered.

At first I found it a little strange that he wasn’t in the script. But then I realized that he doesn’t actually do all too much plot-wise during the story of the first game. They were probably saving him for the potential sequel, where have obviously has a huge story impact.
