I love how if you search "Badabun parodies" you'll find a bunch of really high-tier speedrunners sipping Coke, eating pizza, and badly pantomiming their own speedruns lmfao
First guy, honestly, I don't see it as a bad move since it was within the rules and competition isn't "fun" for everyone. It's like, the constant back and forth for the guy was stressing him out, so he did something that wouldn't stress him out, and that caused someone else stress because they enjoyed things differently. Ultimately, it seemed pretty unremarkable but I am, in fact, also not a competitive person.
I totally agree but if the community viewed it unofficially as bad form, and that you were "supposed to" view it as more of an ongoing race between yourself as a speedrunner, and other people seeing your records and 'racing' against in you real time... yeah I can see how 'hoarding' would be a problem. I have no interest in participating in any of this, but damn does it create some impressive videos regardless.
The situation with Badabun is extremely funny for us Mexican viewers cus for the longest time the channel was considered like a plague of fake productions for kids to consume. Pretty much the kind of prank centric channel you would find in the 2016 to 2018 era of youtube with the kind of "DATE GONE WRONG 100% REAL" kind of uploads. They mostly capitalized on what was popular at the time and ran with it, so to no one's surprise the run was faked and the whole thing with the pizza makes it even funnier than it probably should be.
The original version of the badabun cheated run didn't have comments disabled. That happened after TH-cam changed kid safe content. The comments were awful. They also threatened to dmca some speed runners that exposed it and whose footage they stole

I rly love the homage to Summoning Salt at the intro. His work continues to push boundaries for speed running docs. I doubt you’ll see this comment but you did great on this one, a few things missed here or there it doesn’t change the fact it was all so well presented.
There had actually been a perge of records on the early years of sm64. Most of those records were spliced, the perge happened thanks to the introduction of spectagram use in speedrunning
While some of the rest of the points have some truth to them, the whole "you deprived the community of a thrilling battle for the title" seems to be provably wrong. Wasn't his hoard the only reason why Matthias was even close to being challenged in several years? Obviously he was not deserving of the title of champion and Matthias was probably extremely annoyed, but his actions actually made the competition real for a while. The new shape of the competition was the one fun thing to come out of the hoard.
Not to mention, it's a little unfair acting like every individual runner owes the community something. Does every speedrunner have to care about 'the competitive aspect'? What if all somebody cared for was getting good times and 'competing' wasn't even something that mattered to them? Are they the bad guy because other people are butthurt that they don't have total control over how interesting it is to watch people one-up eachother? I get it's a little mean and maybe egotistical to mass-upload your scores to flex on people, but they should also cut him some slack. He didn't break any rules and making a rule against score hoarding is just petty.
@@dailydelphox Actually, I disagree there, but not for this case in particular. Speedrunning is a fundamentally collective endeavor. No speedrunner has ever held a record where they discovered and developed every single part of the run. As soon as someone uploads a new path, the entire community builds on top of it. In that sense, allowing a hoard is counterproductive and wrong. Every speedrunner has a debt to the speedrunners before them and anyone intentionally hoarding for personal gain deserves to be ostracized. That said, in this case it's just a matter of execution where the status quo got too stale. A slap on the wrist and laughing about it should be enough. The new ruling has the side effect of protecting the community against the more insidious kind of hoard, which is great.
@@ekki1993 Of course, I know community is a big part of speedrunning. I more just mean, it's not really fair to force every participating speedrunner to care about keeping up competition and being part of the community. Like, if someone didn't talk to other speedrunners at all or wasn't even social, for example, would them mass posting scores still be bad?
I honestly think people overreacted really hard. He wasn’t doing anything actively malicious, and it wasn’t an established rule that he couldn’t hoard records. I think it’s also pretty wack the way people were like “don’t apologize, you’re not sorry. If you were sorry you wouldn’t have done it in the first place”. He obviously didn’t anticipate the reaction people had, and then the way they demonized him for something as petty as uploading multiple records at once was pretty lame.
@@peytonquathamer181 might be, But calling him a crybaby for getting distraught that a trusted friend did something like that and responding the only way he thought was right at the time is a pretty far argument
Fun fact: If the internet was a tangible space, you wouldn't be able to walk through it. As there are far to many abandoned soap boxes littering the floor for safe traversal.
If you make a part 2 to this (because there is defo enough material for it), I'd love to see the story of the Hab trio in MK64, where the champion 'Eric Habrick' turned out to be 3 different people. Luckily these days the 64 community is relatively drama free
Abbysoft made a video on it. Harbrich commented on the video talking about how they’d watch each other play for hours each day. As far as how they’re doing now though, Eric said that he doesn’t know where Troy is as he kind of disappeared. Luke has five kids and is married however, and still lives in Nebraska. Eric himself also lives in Nebraska. Damn
Big fan of the Scandal series in general. It's interesting learning that there are cheaters in every corner of every hobby. Keep them coming Many Formals
7:51 So when is he supposed to apologize? Because if he waited longer, they would just say it was too late to apologize. Why would apologizing so soon mean that he isn't sorry?
He shouldn't have done it at all. Or better yet, he should've asked to have his scores taken down so he could earn them the not scummy way without ruining the fun of the 32/32.
The hoarding scandal is so small and petty compared to the other fandoms ManyKudos has covered. I couldn't help thinking the entire time, "Who the fuck cared about this...?"
I really don't understand what the big problem was. He legitimately beat the records so it shouldn't matter if he waits to announce it. It's not like he instantly got every record.
@bcaiko Hoarding the results and waiting to announce it until you have every single one gives other runners no chance to try and take the World Record back from whoever got it. The whole point of posting the record after you get it is to foster healthy competition between other speedrunners. Someone getting a WR motivates others to try and push themselves to get a better PB and set a new WR to take it back. The problem was, when Matthias got his World Records, he would post them right after he got them. This made his journey to try and get every single world record held consecutively so impressive because it meant that he had to be better than everyone at not just a couple of tracks, but EVERY track. He had to be good enough to take back any record that got stolen from him aswell. Dan hoarding his WR's just gets rid of all of that competition. It's such a frowned upon thing because Matthias got so close to hitting 32/32 WRs held MULTIPLE times over the course of SEVERAL YEARS, while Dan just held all of his WRs until he had every single one to get all 32 at the same time. Was there anything wrong with this from a rules standpoint? No. But morally it went against everything the community stood for, and that's why nobody respects him for doing it.
@@Alserex But Dan is literally better than everyone else if he had the records. I don't understand why it's so important to post one at a time instead of all at once. The times are the same either way. People are always trying to beat the current records, so it's not like Dan snuck in then there wasn't any competition. I think it actually could have given Matthias an advantage since he could focus on the remaining records rather than fighting off Dan. He could have been the first official person to get all of the records, even if Dan instantly stole the title back.
Its just about competition. One guy was doing in a way that allow people to fight back. The other one was not showing all the cards. One guy wanted to compete the other one just want to win. Its fair, just kinda of a dick move.
When someone cheats its easy to ban them and be done but this essential bordered the line between cheating and not. He didn't do anything concretely wrong but he spit in the face of sportsmanship. Theres other sports where things like this can be done and it be more optimal. People and teams that do them live in infamy because at that point why isn't everyone doing them. If every runner hoarded records it kills the mario kart 64 scene because the big deal was to see who could get them all at once. If anyone cares baseball or mma are sports where things like this can come up more often.
Hot take: on that first story, if Dan did *not* apologize and simply *embraced* the evil, I would've respected it slightly more (albeit in a messed up way). People become unsportsmanlike villains in competitive play across different scenes all the time; embracing it and going all in (at least until the behavior is banned) would kinda be par for the course when it comes to the seedier parts of competitive scenes. There's always *that guy* in scenes like this. In short, I agree with that one respondent in his "apology" comment: "No, you knew what you were doing, own it."
13:16 I know this is a joke, but technically, even if they wanted to, they couldn't have rendered paper mario with one polygon. He's a rectangle, and since modern engines use triangle based polygons, you need at minimum two of them to make him. Also, in thousand year door, he's not one texture. He's made from multiple overlapping textures that get moved individually, each of which would need at minimum their own pair of polys.
The complaint of "he didn't post the Mario Kart records in a timely manner, therefore nobody could beat them" is bizarre to me. Um, no? Just because you don't know they exist, you can still beat them by... beating them. In addition, there's only one WR holder, so... that's the only guy who could legitimately claim that grievance anyway. Anyone else still has a target to go for, and will claim WR by beating it. Plus the WR holder is still the WR holder while the runs are concealed, so that doesn't really change anything except the workload the WR holder is giving themself if they want to get all the WRs back. Which is their decision to make.
Fun fact, the guy who got asked to be quiet during the Speedrun was asked to talk a lot, they weren't really friends but knew each other and decided to play a fun little joke
For people who don’t understand the Mario kart controversy one. It’s not that Dan “cheated”. It’s that he was part of a competitive group that stopped a guy from getting 32 world records and it was a very fun public back and forth where people were actively trying to stop him every time he would put something out. Dan included. Dan knowing that he couldn’t do it if he had to deal with the same rules that he and others set for Matthias decided to do the exact opposite and hide his records so no one could stop him which took away the competitive element. He turned fun and made it unfun. That’s why no one cares about the record. It wasn’t cheating though. At the end of the day, which story was better? One story is a guy taking on the whole community taking each record one by one and the other is a guy who hid and took the community out of the equation.
I still think that is a stupid reason to cancel the guy. Mario Kart speedrunners are just a bunch of cry babies if they act like this. His speedruns were earned legitimately, it was his choice when to upload and where. The real reason they were mad at Dan was because he defeated the front-runner everyone was rooting for. Apparently, these speedrunners don't have the capacity to accept lose like adults without throwing hissy fits.
It was his choice to when and where to upload, but it's their choice whether or not to respect him. He's entitled to earn his records and post them however he likes, but people are also entitled to have their own opinions about it, and if their opinion is "he's an uncompetitive slime" well, why aren't they entitled to that as well? You can't have it both ways. Also "cancelled" lol. Is not liking a guy for his crapass records too woke now? Are the leftists ruining mario for you? People don't like a guy because he did something underhanded, good god the DYSTOPIA of it.
"Hide his records so no one could stop him". What, were they going to steal his controller otherwise? If you need other people to threaten your record to improve, sounds like it's not an achievement to be bragging about. Do these people have so little going on that following Mario Cart 64 speedruns is their only purpose in life, and "depriving" them of some numbers is enough to actively cancel a guy?
I quit Warframe months ago as a result of getting addicted to it. This was to an unhealthy extent, as my grades and mental health both suffered. Hearing that song start playing during the midroll ad made me just about jump out of my chair in fear.
I feel like the biggest thing they have to start doing in all speedrunning is require players to record their hands. Itd be annoying for everyone but i feel would eliminate a lot of cheaters. I guess hypothetically you could still splice but I'd just be impressed at that point.
I love the production quality of this video. Despite already knowing all of these situations... I still watched the whole thing. Got me to watch something I already know, that's impressive.

Badabun has done so much shit and gotten into so many controversies it’s actually hilarious that the English community only know them as those guys that faked a Mario speedrun that one time? That is arguably the least serious controversy they have had

I like how you said that holymoly was just straight up executed. Like imagine if the government would kill you, just because you cheated in a game.
Gotta love the Summoning Salt call out.
Great point!

7:51 So when is he supposed to apologize? Because if he waited longer, they would just say it was too late to apologize. Why would apologizing so soon mean that he isn't sorry?
Yup. They just wanted blood.
They just wanted to be angry. Honestly kind of sad.
If anyone cares baseball or mma are sports where things like this can come up more often.
they did Dan dirty tbh. mans didn't do nothing wrong he was just schemin'
Damn I had to up my screen brightness with how dark some of 'em jokes were xD

Mate just want to say again how great your writing is. Many Kudos, indeed
6:55 using this in every argument from now on
13:16 I know this is a joke, but technically, even if they wanted to, they couldn't have rendered paper mario with one polygon.
2:26 you’re welcome
Fun fact, the guy who got asked to be quiet during the Speedrun was asked to talk a lot, they weren't really friends but knew each other and decided to play a fun little joke
Ah, I remember when the ManyKudos apparition appeared in my personalized copy of SM64. Finally makes sense all these years later.

0:41 Nah nah go back go back.....WHAT?
Yeah it just kinda of dick move.
"he turned fun and made it unfun" is the basic premise of virtually every highly competitive gaming circle after a while.
