Releasing at the perfect time when children were beginning to grow bored of Pokemon, while also yearning for something cooler and edgier, Yu Gi Oh is the trading card game phenomenon that leaped its way out of Japan and quickly took over the world, recently finding renewed interest with the release of Yu Gi Oh! Master Duel. Of course, any game with a profile as high as this can't exist without finding a few, or shall we say 'many scandals' along the way, and Yu Gi Oh certain has some fun ones. The Tokyo Dome Riot is one of the greatest examples of the insanity some people encountered due to Yu Gi Oh, with a crowd of 55,000 Japanese fans starting to riot because they stopped selling an exclusive pack of cards. There are many more scandals to uncover, such as 4kids rampant censorship of the Yu Gi Oh anime, some hilarious rulings for the Yu Gi Oh trading card game, and two ingenious German players who created the world's longest deck of Yu Gi Oh cards, and subsequently entered it into a tournament.

      CONTENT WARNING: homicide, mental health
In Italy, last year, a young man assassinated his roommates. One of the witnesses stated the killer was seen walking around close to his apartment with a knife, singiing a song to himself. That song was the Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx Italian opening. When this killing was reported in TV, they even played the theme song and explained what Yu-Gi-Oh! was, in an half-assed attempt to connect the killer's mental disorders to playing a "violent card game" in a way not to dissimilar to the way the Colombine school shooting was linked to the game Doom. Except here nobody took it seriously and it just became a meme.

@@ManyKudos There’s also been a a bunch of judges who DQ’d players for having missing cards or even decks after performing a deck check. Like, they literally took the deck away from the owner and then after checking, found certain aspects missing that weren’t missing before the check. And you would get a ban if you said a judge stole it (even when they did). To be fair, sometimes they just let the deck out of their sight and a passerby took it and they just didn’t do anything about it. Speaking of doing nothing, that’s what Konami did for years in regards to this problem. My brother quit because this happened to him and Konami had actually once banned the reigning world champ at the time after this happened to him as well.
I had quit earlier because I was frustrated over the practice of rarity bumping. Here in the west, Konami would make certain cards rarer after seeing how well they did in Japan so as to sell more packs. It isn’t as bad these days I hear but they have been doing this since Upper Deck left. It hurts to see the exact same decks be so much more expensive in the west just because of this practice. They have literally turned popular commons (1-2 copies of each common a box) into secret rares (which for a time were 1 copy EVERY 8 BOXES!!!). It was ridiculous and I KNOW just that alone made lots of players quit.

The Shadow Realm was considered "better" than death because there was a possibility of that person being brought back. The Japanese version already had dark dimensions where people's souls were trapped and hardcore duels were played, 4Kids just decided to expand on that idea.
Also, having an infinitely huge deck is a legit strategy in what's called a stall deck. The two main ways of winning a duel (aside from card effects) is either bring your opponent's Life Points to zero or have your opponent run out of cards to draw. Obviously if you have more cards in your deck than your opponent and can create a situation where neither player can attack, victory is pretty much a given.

After the 'giving bullies something else to steal' line it triggered a forgotten memory
When I was in like grade 2 YuGiOh was the new hotness but I didn't have any cards and my family didn't have the money to buy me any.
Well my one friend decided to give me one of his cards and I cherished it. It was the fusion monster Giltia the Dragon Knight. Being as young as I was I wasn't the best at reading so I thought it was called Gaia and must have been a different version of Gaia the Fierce Knight the card Yugi would use when I watched the show.
Well one day the schoolyard bullies saw me looking at the card since I always loved the artworks of cards and snatched it from my hands and ran off with it. Some of them stopped me from giving chase by threatening to beat me up and they came back a minute later with the card torn up and threw the pieces infront of me. I remember shouting at them from destroying my Gaia card and they all laughed while the one who tore up my card shuffled through his cards and revealed the card Gaia the Fierce Knight while shouting back 'You idiot this is Gaia!' and then all walked off with me picking up the pieces of what was once my only card. I didn't feel so bad that I lost the card itself but the fact it was a gift that I now had to tell my friend got ruined.
I ended up getting the Kaiba starter deck for Christmas that year but the very same day my cousin came over for Xmas family brunch and he stole my blue eyes. He got Yugis deck but wanted my blue eyes and I thought dark magician was cooler anyway so we made a trade for them. After he left I realized both blue eyes and the dark magician were gone. I also remember him trying to say Dark Hole was a continuous spell and even in my child stupidity knowing that wasn't right and even brought out the rulebook to show that there's a symbol to show when it's continuous. Sadly a mix of being younger and 'well I saw it on the show' lost me the argument. Even if it wasn't on the show you could easily lie about it because kids probably haven't seen every episode let alone remember every part of it.

While it’s easy enough to just update an extra deck full of expensive staples, it’s hard to build one from scratch (hence the new player problem the game has). Konami has had problems dealing with these judges that cause decks to go “missing” (they literally say the deck or expensive card is missing and DQ a player and if the player complains, they get a ban, it’s ridiculous). Maybe official tournament rules were different than the rules in the decks you could get at Target? Because this like 2002, before that big deck thing happened.

Btw there are way more scandals, one of my favs is the Maxx "c" debacle, it was a completely broken card that changed the way the game was played in it's hay day because it allows you to draw a card each time your opponent special summons a monster, this card became so prevalent that it spawned the Max "c" challenge which is when someone would attempt to deck out their opponent out by forcing them to draw their entire deck, which is very possible because players devised a few infinite summon loops to do so.
This one is a mini scandal but it was bloody hilarious.

This is such a great video! I would love to see a part 2 of YuGiOh scandals revolving around tournament scandals like Patrick Hoban, the banning of Triff Gaming, and all the remote duel shenanigans/cheating that occurred during the pandemic.

Little fun fact: In the german version of the tcg, dark magician is called dark magician aswell, but in the german anime it is black magician.

A scandal i’m surprised no one has mention actually involved Upper Deck, which was responsible for distributing out Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards until the Synchro era I believe. Basically Upper Deck was distributingfake Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards with REAL cards. Once Konami got ahold of this information they not only sued Upper Deck but then also distributing the cards themselves to prevent something else like that happening.

  • @JenerikEt
    @JenerikEt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Aw I was hoping you'd mention a bit more about the anime. There's stuff about 4kids getting sued and eventually bought by Konami because they left out episodes or something, and there's even a bit about a whole story arc of Yu-gi-oh 5d's about a psychic cult getting scrapped before production because they found out one of the japanese voice actors was actually in a cult

the reason exodia was so desired is because sangan and witch of the black forest used to search regardless of how they were sent to the graveyard. with 3 graceful charity 3 pot of greed that promo exodia was a competitive edge unlike anything i've ever seen

I'm surprised you didn't cover the battle between Konami/4Kids and LittleKuriboh over the Abridged series. It ended with LK making 4Kids the literal villain of YGOTAS s3. It was fantastic to see such a milestone of YGO culture actually win against Konami.

The smelly player rule is great. And the excuses were weird. They'd say something like "What if you can't afford to shower?" Mate you have thousands of dollars worth of cards. If you can afford a booster box. you can buy a stick of soap and go to the public showers or something.

That stink thing always hits home with me, when I played basketball in high school we had a guy on our team who wouldn't shower or wear deodorant on game days, even if we had a phys ed class that day... it got to the point that his parents were the only ones willing to drive him to away games. He also had to put on his left sock and left shoe before the right any time he put on his shoes, and kept one fingernail a bit longer to scratch the other team with. Seemed pretty normal otherwise, but he had some issues when it came to basketball.

Stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh quite some time ago, the game seems to be evolved into "if you do not finish the game in your first turn and allow the opponent to have his first turn, you have not purchased enough pack to build the most OP meta deck possible and oneshot everyone, start paying scrub". Even MTG allows the players to have games to last longer than the average bedroom adventure. They managed to compress the corporate greed into an artform. Then again self care management might have something to do with it.

You are not wrong, yugioh is basically who can play more with less and make a board that doesn't allow the opponent play. Yeah, people Often brick and battle making the other not able to play.
The fact that there isn't a curve of resources is great, and also awful.
