Fun fact about 2K games: every year, they arbitrarily change the mechanic for shooting the basketball and tout it as some kind of revolutionary new gameplay feature. It's always worse and it always gets changed in the next game.
Note for the rest of comment: 2K is one of the greediest companies of all time, and the games they produce have serious issues that stem from mere incompetence or laziness from the executives who want more money with less devwork (labor) to increase profit margins. However, I think the reason these games have issues is a complex topic that isn't simply "they barely update the game" or "they change the shooting year after year". I'll admit I have 1000s of hours on every 2K game that comes out, I'm an avid basketball fan and it's one of the only games I can find the time to play with my friends since all of us from childhood live all over the world now. I think the time I've spent on the game gives me a much greater understanding of its issues than a person just picking up the series for the first time will have. One of the biggest problems is that because the game is on an annual release schedule, the devs are forced to spend the majority of their time working on creating new mechanics for the same reasons you already said: so they can be marketed as revolutionary. What this means is that many of the glitches from past games, are still in the game today. I've seen glitches that were in the LAST GENERATION of consoles still be in the game today, which is just atrocious. Another issue is its lack of accessibility and purposefully confusing storefronts and menus. For example in the game you can go to a store like Nike, but what the game fails to tell you is the only shoes you can wear in online modes are the ones in the "colorways" section. If you buy any of the "on court" shoes, you've essentially wasted your money because the only place you can wear them is offline NBA games. Then you have the lack of explanation for the myplayer builder, they have 30 or so attributes like 3pt shooting, passing, stealing, etc. but there are literally no descriptions at all on what each stat does game mechanic wise. For example maybe somebody thinks "If I upgrade my passing, maybe my guy will start throwing crazy flashy passes like LeBron or Luka Doncic". In reality, raising your passing makes your passes a few frames faster while still maintaining the same animations that you can equip called "pass style". The only way we as a community on the game know this is because a youtube channel called 2KLabs tests out all of these mechanics and stats. The game does not explain any of this to new players, which mean players mess up and create terrible builds and spend money on getting them upgraded, only to find out how terrible they are and have to make a new one, which again costs them $50-$75. There's so many issues with the game, but almost all of them boil down to corporate greed, while it's easy to point a finger at the devs and say the shooting mechanics changing is the issue, you have to understand that in the games industry devs are like slaves for the corporations they work for. I'm sure the devs of 2K think it's absolutely stupid that a character on the game costs $70, but people like Ronnie2K, the spokesperson for 2K, are posting videos in ferraris. They are the ones we need to be talking about as the problem. The game will not improve with people like that "running" the show.
Being penalized because the game disconnects because the networking is badly designed is kind of like playing on hardcore mode in a Diablo game and then dying because packet drops cause your inputs to not register.
An unfortunately common problem in Diablo IV, or at least it was. Blizzard said something about fixing the disconnects or at least finding ways to prevent it from killing hardcore characters, but I stopped playing ages ago so I don't know if it worked.
@@Elora445You’re never going to be able to have 100% connection to server at all time in an online game, ever. Hell, even if you lived in the basement where the game servers are, you’re still not guaranteed to have 0 latency and connection. @@Aliens1337 I know, I know. There are some tricks they can use to make sure that the characters don't die because of something the player themselves didn't cause. Resident Evil was the worst. It's fixed now since the RE4 remake, but before then every single title on steam was formatted completely differently. Blizzard is handling Overwatch just fine right now, I don't really get it. As a player since day 1 of Overwatch's initial launch, its honestly better than it ever was - it now has WAY more content, gets frequent updates and events.. and the game is not as slowpaced as "OW1", there's less stuns - and it's free, so I can easily drag friends to play without the game demanding $40 per person. In fact the "War of the 3 Kingdom" was effectively an expansion of the board game "BANG!". Many basic cards and some classic characters are straight up identical with some characters of "BANG!". But the game blowed up so it was made much bigger and introduced some varieties. Due to its earliest migration into digital board game in China, it became the leading digital card game there for many years. But the game just didn't evolve, and like many card games, relied on getting more complicated and more broken pay2win cards. The dead loop lead to jank
Glad someone else mentioned this! I have fond memories of both Bang! and the 3 Kingdoms card games, so it was really surprising to see here that 3 Kingdoms was on Steam. Too bad they ended up getting greedy.
22:33 Iirc, Steam didn't even have a refund system back then, or at least not in the way it exists now. Steam's refund system was only a recent addition after Valve caved to legal demands. There were some exceptions where you could request a refund if a game was especially bad, but otherwise back then, if an EA game was abandoned or failed to live up to expectation, you were basically screwed. At least nowadays, the refund policy isn't as strict as it seems, as you can still attempt to request a refund even if your purchase went beyond the minimum requirements, but only in a scenario where a game failed to meet expectations beyond those two hours/two weeks (that and you had to make it clear that you didn't enjoy the game beyond that limit - you couldn't just complete any random game, then suddenly request a refund and say "lol game sucked")
As I recall, the game didn't have to be just "especially bad", it had to be non-functional. I think there were also exceptions for fraudulent games and games that had to be removed for things like stolen assets and copyright violations, but other than that it was 'you don't, like it? Well, tough luck'.
It's weird how many people don't understand how lenient Steam refunds are, and all they know is the two weeks/two hours part. From Steam's refund policy: "even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described(2 weeks, 2 hours), you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look." If a game wasted your time for two or three hours before you realized it's crap, you can still refund it. They'll refund you no questions asked in the two week/two hour timeframe. A little outside of that, you just need to give a good reason. Cite hardware issues of you don't know what to say. As long as you're not trying to get a refund way out of that timeframe and intentionally abusing the system, you're okay.
Next Car Game actually came out. After the Kickstarter failed, they sold Pre-Orders as a „Technology Sneak Peek“, just before christmas 2013, which was so successful that it raised more money in a week than the initial kickstarter even asked for. the game got released on Steam Early Access in January 2014, got renamed in October the same year.. to Wreckfest.
Fun fact about the Flatout 3, around the time of that game being released I was in a programming and art course equivalent to associates degree or trade school, we were required to do an internship to complete it. Quite literally half the 20 people class was an intern at Team 6 to the point that in out course it was called "the [name of class] company" or worse "the intern company", because from what people that interned there told a grand total of 4 people of the, roughly, 40 people that was in the office daily wasn't an intern making only ~10% of the people working at that office paid employees.
I hope you do a deep dive in early access games, the amount that get abandoned or even just cancelled before getting to the 1.0 release I imagine is quite a lot now
god I've seen such promising looking games either get completely gutted of their promise and left as half abandoned shovelware, or just straight up done a runner with the money
I imagine the problem with that as a video is that the story is the same every time. Dev wants to make a game. Dev gets it to playable. Dev early accesses the game. People buy in and are excited. Dev works on game for a bit. Uh oh, the game is hard to make and/or the money ran out and/or we're bored of working on the game and want to do anything else. Either bail or push a bad 1.0 and then bail.
@bobbodaskank what I hated I was browsing the steam sale and saw some cool looking games in early access but so often would see a release of a game that it's core is sound, so they have done a lot of the heavy lifting already but then might have a couple of updates and then radio silence, Superfuse is an example
I'll never forget the first time I saw Farming Simulator. As someone who grew up on a farm, I thought it was a hilarious joke. Nope. It's "let's play tractors!" for grown adults, so successful it gets a new release annually. Wtf!? 😅
@@rhythmandblues_alibi I can see why. However, people who grew up in a city are the target buyers, as they get to experience the freedom (and the routine) of living in the countryside; a much needed release from their Work-Home routine.
I'm a trucker and legitimately used American Truck Sim to practice for my CDL test lol. When the multiplayer mod came out there was a couple times I'd park my real truck then get online to play with friends. Haven't touched it in a few years though.
City folk are absolutely not the target audience. It's overwhelmingly boys from rural areas that have a passion for modern farm equipment. They unironically have LAN parties playing it. Just because one grew up on or around farms doesn't mean you get to operate the newest or largest harvesters and tractors. It's for tractor nerds. Just like how I many play Snowrunner to enjoy huge offroad trucks they will never get to drive. I'm not saying there aren't those city gamers at all. But you've got to be pretty interested in the newest combine harvesters to keep getting the newest version.

I don’t see anything wrong with the Spacebase DF-9 situation tbh. You absolutely should abort failing projects rather than go down with the ship. One thing about the Gundam game that contributes a bit to the reviews is probably the lack of crossplay with consoles because the PC version decided to add new units from the franchise that they console gamers don't get. Basically the franchise is decades old with many interpretations, but the oldest versions of the franchise were centered around a single Universal Century timeline that was more militaristic. Later on it got way more anime in separate timelines and the giant robots got increasingly insane abilities as the franchise continued. The game started on consoles with an old school UC only robots thing, but the PC version introduced some of the later ones with comparitively insane abilities that some players thought would render all their favorites obsolete. It is now a huge division on consoles as to whether they want these newer units at all with some convinced it will ruin the game and devs actually holding a giant survey asking console players if they want to keep the new units out of the console version or if they want it to get all the ones the PC version has.

Got no sympathy for gamers that buy sports titles. They are overpriced, lack range and variety, and upon release have almost always had bad review score ratings.
How about amending that to "gamers that buy sports titles new/at full price," since its still a viable genre and there's almost always no competition? Like, WTF are we supposed to do if we want to play a sports game that isn't arcadey or indie jank
You gotta remember that a lot of people kinda just buy those titles.

I know, I know. There are some tricks they can use to make sure that the characters don't die because of something the player themselves didn't cause. But for some reason, these games apparently don't use them.

You can say that again.
Best line in the video.

IIRC, you actually CAN 100% a game in 2 hours, then refund it, no questions ask

Quite literally half the 20 people class was an intern at Team 6 to the point that in out course it was called "the [name of class] company" or worse "the intern company", because from what people that interned there told a grand total of 4 people of the, roughly, 40 people that was in the office daily wasn't an intern making only ~10% of the people working at that office paid employees.

@@applejuice7108 If it wasn't for that, they wouldn't have been getting any attention at all by that point. The show was already all but dead.
@@jic1 I tried to give it a chance.
Then they turned the Master into an obnoxious potato and had said obnoxious potato somehow singlehandedly destroy Gallifrey thus negating the best anniversary special the modern show ever produced and I checked out entirely.
@applejuice7108 and the first nonwhite Doctor.
The World of Warcraft level up sound effect when you said William Ding's name was perfection.
In case you didn't know, Bugbear did make that successor, its called Wreckfest
I love the contrast of humorous bits and memes and serious commentary in your videos, I think you found a good ratio.
What, you don't include Sim Ant in your massive list of various Sim(ulation) games? Disappointing...
I grew up on SimAnt in the 90s. It gave me an appreciation for ants. It was one of my favorite games.
I used to play SimCopter and Streets of Simcity. Now that's a game...
@@rockjianrockThat's my early PC gaming world right there!
You could have gone the entire video without pointing out that Bloodborne is almost TEN (10) years old now, ya know. Holy shit time flies
And it's still stuck at 30fps with no PC port in sight. 😞
When he pointed out The Witcher 3 came out in 2015, that HURT me 😭
After watching till the end it completely makes sense why this video was so hilarious. I never realised how much I missed what you were doing with your older content. The bizarre writing and phrasing is your strength and what makes you unique.
Overwatch 2 getting the equivalent of a ratio will always be hilarious
in what way did it get a ratio?
This is the first video I got to watch on your channel.
Honestly, it was a while since I got to laugh so much watching a relatively serious video. Loved the jokes in between the content; not too overused and just fitting, being subtle. Hopefully that's what you enjoy doing too, and we get to see more!
I think the worst part of GBO2 is that it launched years earlier on PS4, and the matchmaking works there ssssssooooooooo
Yes please make the weird jokes and content. It's refreshing and never fails to get a laugh. I mean, a mini-Kudos out of the gaping mouth-box? Instant classic.
5:57 It's funny because I remember seeing comments back in 2015/16 directly comparing RCTW to Cities Skylines and that the graphics in RCTW are "inexcusably bad"
Throwing out Meet n' Fuck kingdom so nonchalantly.. You're a fucking legend.
Roller Coaster Tycoon World is so bad it earned a cameo from The Supreme Gentleman himself.
Ah-HEM! *Pushes glasses up nose with middle finger*
Minecraft was actually released as a pre-alpha version known as "inDev" and only updated to the "Alpha" version later.
Was that the free one? Cos I remember playing it for free back in the day.
@@rhythmandblues_alibiI want to say it was something like "Minecraft classic"but I can't remember. I bought into the alpha right before the beta came out but I tried it out in some in-browser simplified version on their site. I don't remember it well though
Good for you man. This vid definitely played like a more polished, fancy-pants moving picture show! I'm a video editor, and know how long it can take to get a good film out. People will always appreciate quality,
49:00 - I feel you, brother. I was / am there myself. It's a really weird position to be in, to have a career that so many people want, but be so overwhelmed by it. The second channel is a great idea, and I'm considering it myself. Either way, I can say that whatever keeps you happy & healthy is what your audience truly wants. If that means more time between vids, separate channels, or just taking a break, so be it, and that's coming from both a long-time member of said audience, and a fellow creator. Glad you seem to be doing better & have a plan to keep it that way. Looking forward to more awesome stuff like this!
it would be nice if steam went "as long as a game is in early access, it's refund time limit is increased from 2 hours to 50" suddenly a lot of early access games would reconsider being early access
Sigh, I miss the good sports games, like SSX
@@dangsood4945 The only good sports game is Mario Super Sluggers 😎
@@nandanthony Are we ignoring Wii Sports?
You gotta remember that a lot of people kinda just buy those titles. I had a friend that played nothing but sports games and GTA V, and while he had bad taste to be sure, I still agreed with him about hating the lazy development.
Sports fans don't think to check reviews for games like regular gamers do, because they're not choosing between options, they're picking the one thing they're interested in. And goddamn does EA exploit that.
Er, in GBO2 lv1 penalty only bans you for one day and 5 hours, its the lv 2 penalty that bans you for 7 days.
I know this because Ive gotten hundreds of penalties in my 800 hours of play time (and I still play daily since day 1)
Love the announcement at the end! So happy to see you getting back to making stuff you ENJOY making, we can wait!
It's a tragedy that 'The Day Before' can't be on this list
Just a correction thats pedantic but minecraft was sold in pre alpha too. I bought mine during infdev and it was $5. When it went to alpha the price went to $15, but buying it before then still got you the full release. Id like to say i only spent $5 on minecraft but i bought it on 360 and switch, however my pc version was $5.
I have nearly the exact same CRT monitor at 1:00, mine's the FS740, speakers included. Had to to a double take there since I was watching the video on that monitor.
32:14 that cash conversion rate is brutal going south
I love the very end of this video. Do what makes you happy because I like what makes you happy. I became a fan of yours awhile ago and I'm planning on sticking around. You cover stuff that I find interesting, make it funny and just do a great job all around.
"Would you believe this game is better rated than..." *Final Fantasy ad plays*
Roller Coaster tycoon will always be impressive to me. Writing it all in assembly is black magic as far as i am concerned.
20:05 “double edged sword” you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Yeah i think he means double fisting eat-all-you-can bonanza
I thought I was dumb for thinking the saying meant double-edged and not double-ended my whole life 😅
You definitely activated my almonds on this rainy Sunday
Damn I miss Jim Crow games, those were the best days
"51 minutes video - do I have the time? It's probably clickbait anyways..."
"Hello, here's the list."
Kudos, that's a nice!
Flatout 3 is not AS bad as it seems though. Yes, it's nowhere near as good as first two games, but if you remove "Flatout" from its name - it becomes funny goofy racing game. Meanwhile Flatout 4 just sucks huge ass - physics in it are literally unplayable, your car bounces all over the place, opponents have infinite mass, you barely get any nitrous and many more. Flatout 3's and Flatout 4's reviews should be exchanged.
