      @Micras08 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@averyeml As much as I enjoy watching many of the highlights of CRC1, I will never watch all the episodes. I don't really think that's due to Orion's messing up the good vibes of the first 30ish episodes, it's more a matter of it being a daunting task having to watch so many hours of content ^^
Luckily I caught CRC2 when it started and have kept up since. I would honestly suggest anyone who can't get into CR by starting at campaign 1 to try and start at C3, because it's a lot less daunting to have 5-6 episodes to catch up on than 100+ :P

Kids today will never understand what it was like during the 80's Satanic Panic. I had been playing D&D with my friends since I was 10 years old. Used to go to the shops on my bike and anywhere else. Would hang out at friends' houses etc. No problem....until...... Ray Martin and the tabloid media got onto the salaciousness of D&D. My mum saw a single report presented by good ol'Ray. This was at 14 year old. Suddenly, overnight, we were banned. Banned from D&D, banned from roaming the neighborhood on our bikes, going to the shops by ourselves, hanging out at each other's houses. The parents all rallied to save us from Satan. And then, about 6months later, it was all forgotten. Nothing more was ever spoken of the dangers of D&D etc. It was like nothing happened. It was weird.
You know Millennials, as a Gen X you hear me slag off Boomers a lot and may wonder what all the fuss was about, that it's a bit age-ist, etc. But never forget, we had them as our parents, teachers, community leaders, and they were ALL absolutely the biggest fuckheads you could possibly imagine. In fact, when the Simpsons came out, I thought it was based on our town. It wasn't. It was based on ALL towns. The reason why we all have no future, is directly because of their ridiculous stupidity.

I had just finished FFIV and when some classmates got me into joining the tabletops games club, I joined their D&D group immediately, making your cookie-cutter paladin, lawful stupid and all. Now THANKFULLY, I was blessed with good party members that helped me understand how it was a team effort to win fights and puzzles, all while also knowing how being good doesn't always mean doing the most righteous things. And I also had a hard time accepting bad rolls, but they also helped me understand how failure is part of getting better at things.
And now, years later, I'm aa DM for some relatives in our own Tyranny of Dragons campaign, with them accompanied by a Paladin who wishes to protect them from the dangers ahead and hosting secrets that even he doesn't know of.

If I do ever commit to a legitimate game, I'll know how to treat the game and the people around me. Not acting like a 'main character' or metagaming. It's quite literally role-playing in a fantasy world. You and a bunch of friends on a journey. I don't ever wanna be 'that guy.'

My character ended up sort of becoming the leader of the group but only in combat because he's an ex soldier, but even then I never act like a main character because it just never seemed like that was the point of playing the game. After watching this, Jesus am I glad I had that mindset and never became THAT guy because it must be infuriating to play with someone like that.

Can confirm the Dungeons & Dragons in prison thing. My mom works as a psychologist at the state penitentiary where I live, and she had asked me a couple months ago about D&D, as she was considering it as an activity to help with their mental health. I've been helping her figure out the game and find campaigns for them. It's been really neat. An interesting little anecdote is that they have to use some sort of card based solution for rolling dice since dice can be used as weapons and gambling in a prison. Outside of that, it's all pretty much what you would expect.

My first weekend of LARPING was SO intense (imagine being 13 years old, camping away from home without parents, playing with your group of friends in an amazing scenario on a huge piece of land with 80 other players, almost everyone was older with awesome costumes and the monsters were really terrifying. There was even a white dragon played by a professional comedian on stilts with lights for eyes who would only come at night. His lair was on a real island on the frozen lake and he was worshipped by cultist orcs...some of his treasure was in blocs of ice that we had to melt to get all the coins, magical necklaces, rings, gold cups, etc...) So when I came back to reality I was really sad and depressed that it was over and was only thinking about the next weekend of LARPING 4 weeks later. I ended up buying the season pass at 600$ for 10 weekends, food included, 2 years in a row and became vice-president of the company at 15.
But my mom was really cool with all of that eventually and would even let me the appartment so I could play with my friends...

Some folks have criticized CR for how much they earn right now but I tell you they started with Nothing and a Concept. It does not shy away from Slavery or Sexism at all. In fact, its two of its most major themes. And it lets you actually DO something about it. People need to understand that just because you have something really messed up in a game doesn't mean the developers automatically condone the messed up thing. In fact, its needed for some worlds to actually exist. Completely cutting out those themes in fiction destroys some wonderful stories that could happen as a result.

I got into Critical Role not long after I got into D&D and was sucked into Campaign 1. Admittedly, I skipped to battles and dungeon crawls a lot at first, but even a rookie like me noticed Orion's crappy moves during the battle with K'Varn. He literally hung outside of the lair to avoid 'Lair Actions' he revealed previously BY NAME, fired a few little spells, then when the Mind Flayers were coming in, he tried to become Action man to rally them for aid, and then stole the final kill after swooping in (Travis asked something along the lines of 'Are you kidding', I believe). Then when Vex killed the revived K'varn, Orion got all pouty like he lost the wind from his sails and began packing up to leave before the game was done and Marisha had to whisper to him to quit it. Orion's excuse? He thought Matt was trying to kill them. He played with Matt how long before the stream? He should know Matt doesn't DM that way. A newbie at the game could tell he was being toxic and out to become the main character.
Now that I'm more experienced, I can't really enjoy the first twenty-seven episodes like I did because I can see more of his toxic habits.

Ah, Matt Mercer. Ol Matty M. What a legend.
A stellar DM, who makes millions doing what everyone else does.
A good writer with a knack for world-building, in desperate need of an editor.
A stand out in knowing when to ease on the rules to allow for fun, to the point where your players will quote HIS rulings for YOUR game.
We don't hate you, Matt Mercer. We hate what you've turned DMing into: an unending juggling match between people quoting you or Jeremy Crawford, but always only when it benefits them.

In '77 me and my best friend were late for school a lot during the winter. So we had to go get interrogated by the vice principal. During the interrogation he asked us what we did for fun, so we rattled off a dozen or so things including playing D&D. Next thing we knew our parents were called in and were told we should be sent to counselling for our 'dangerous' activity of playing D&D(but not racing home made gocarts on the streets, playing in construction sites, skateboarding in open sewers or jumping our bikes off cliffs). My mother told them to f off(literally, which blew my mind because she didn't swear often) but my friend wasn't so lucky. Oh and why were we late for school? Because it was one of the most severe winters on record and there were HUGE snowdrifts all over the place so we'd bring some waxed cardboard with us on the way to school and get in some welfare tobogganing in. Nobody ever asked us about that.

considering my current character is a Lizardfolk Cleric who literally doesn't experience emotions, it would take quite a bit of dissociation for me to mistake myself for them. i do find it ironic that the people who think D&D players can't distinguish between fantasy and reality themselves cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality.

    Makes me sad about Orion.
I know him, and he's such an outgoing, boisterous guy that really knows how to tell a story, but there's so much stuff going on around him, I knew I needed to distance myself.
Taliesin and Marisha, though, are the sweetest people ever. Met them at Disneyland a few years back, and they were amazing. Marisha was so excited, and was searching her bag to find a #thankskeyleth button, and was bummed she didn't have any left, but then took one her friend had and gave it to me.

Puling apparently didn't even know that her son played D&D until after his death (and there is no evidence that he was actually THAT into it). I believe that part of his issues was that his family seemed to ignore him and have no clue what was going on in his life. Or at least that multiplied his problems. Because if he had issues, but a family that paid attention to such things, they could have possibly helped him. I think that was part of Pulings reason for striking out at D&D, to cast blame anywhere but even a little bit toward herself.
I lived through that "Satanic panic" and remember the claims of at so many suicides or other incidents, there were Dungeons and Dragons books. But D&D was very popular, so the odds are that any random house would have D&D books. It's like blaming Monopoly or Checkers because there was a game box of such at the sight of the suicide or other incident.

As a kid growing up in the 80's and having two VERY religious parents (more so my mother) I can remember a friend of mine mentioning D & D in front of my mother and her going absolutely bonkers. I remember even when the cartoon came out in the early 80's and making it halfway through the first episode and my mother coming in the living room and her flipping out. I think if I recall I got dragged down to church to be forced into confession. Yep, it was that bad.

At some point towards the end of campaign one, after seeing a few best of Grog videos, I looked up the first few episodes of Critical Role just to see if there were more definitive character introductions. • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I go back and do rewatches of C1 occasionally (still my favorite campaign) and see a lot of new viewers, that usually started on C2 (last time I did was before C3 started) and many started watching later parts of C1 first or highlights, and then go back to the start and you see a lot of "Wait, what happened to this Tiberius character" or "Who's this Orion guy" because he's not in C2. And a lot of responses of "Just wait" With the animated series for C1 happening now, I expect we'll see a lot of new viewers deciding to check out the actual campaign and expect a lot more of "Wtf, who's Tiberius" since he won't be in the show. Especially funny since they're actually showing scenes that he would have been in when it was at the table, and he's been essentially retconned out.

Er, no, however silly their objections, this completely misunderstands them.
First of all, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" does not apply. The christian worldview has the faithful surrounded by a world of different enemies, some willfully evil but most manipulated by one evil force.
Second, evil campaigns exist and spellcasters can get their powers from all sorts of evil sources. Even a cleric with a "good" god is still rewarded by the game for being a practicing pagan.
Third, magic in christianity is generally anything that would be a miracle if powered by God, but which was not powered by God. This is because in christianity, the only other possible source of supernatural power is Satan and his demons. It does not matter if you align with good guys and fight bad guys. Satan would not give you his power without an evil plan, and you would not accept it if you served God.
The fear is that DnD will make magic look cool, but the only way to persue that outside the game is evil.
Doom is a fantasy about being able to ward demons off, not by the protection of God given to you in exchange for a lifetime of prayer and obedience, but by having a bigger gun. To a christian, this is easily framed as your kids failing to take a real threat seriously.

Weird thing is, that this kinda mindset hasn't gone away in some circles, yet.
As a young teen a good friend of mine invited me to a boyscouty kinda thing. You had to do some weird shit like sing or listen to sermons, but you also got to build 10m tall wooden towers (out of logs and rope) and build huge fires on their camping trips, so obviously I stayed around.
But the longer I stayed, the more it became apparent, that they were almost sect/cult-like and their views on life and religion were not just flawed, but actually fucked up. It started with "minor" things like men not being allowed to wear their shirts the same way as women (untucked) or the Harry Potter franchise being painted as a worship of witchcraft and the occult. And it kinda grew into the children I would have to watch over asking me why we don't just drop bombs on the temple in Jerusalem so we can reclaim it for the Christians...
So, uh, yeah. That was just around 15 years ago and to my knowledge the organization is still around, so it's probably safe to say that there are enough other groups with backwards-ass views on life still sowing fear into the hearts of impressionable kids.
But sure, it's satanism, that's the downfall of humanity; not the opposite group...
