What could've been a fascinating insight into the sheer creativity that goes into the creation of the video games you spend your days laying in your couch hole scratching your belly to, ended up being an absolute travesty, with a gaping hole in Polaris's pocket. Starring massive TH-cam personalities such as Jontron, Markiplier, CaptainSparklez and Angry Joe, as well as indie game developers such as Zoe Quinn, Adriel Wallick and Tom Jackson, this video essay tells a tale of greed, corporate meddling, bigotry, and enough Mountain Dew to drown a baby billy goat.

Because for people like him, "wholesome" and "story" don't go hand-in-hand. He only finds interest in drama, and if the participants have no interest in taking part in it, then there's no story to be had. The goal for everybody else was friendly competition and passion pursuit, but the consultant's goal was an outdated definition of good television.

That was one part of a multi-part racial joke ARIN STARTED IN THE FIRST PLACE, and Jafari just played along. Even if going after people for JOKES was reasonable in the first place, shouldn't your ire be pointed at ARIN HANSON? cancel culture bs.
The massive difference between the jammers and actual reality game contestants is that for the most part reality show contestants are talentless no-ones whose only shot at fame is to make a mockery of themselves on television. They line up to be in the spotlight, to be manipulated and humiliated, and so long as their name is on the public lips, even if for all the wrong reasons, then everything is golden. The jammers were not those people. In fact they thought they were turning up to film a documentary, not a version of Big Brother with a side order of video games.
Yeah. It genuinely seems like the producers where still believing the outdated notions that online personalities where just Wannabee-stars like in the very early TH-cam days and game developers where all just awkward socially-inept nerds. Instead they got the complete opposite. Professional Entertainers that understood how drama helps nobody and Professional Developers that know fully well the importance of being a good team.
I like that in the end, after the show crashed, the devs acted like they were just meeting up as a group of friends - playing games, drinking, talking, discussing, developing games, just in general having a good time together
It's actually inspiring that multiple, legitimate game jams spawned out of this disaster.

It was certainly a genuine and fanciful idea, just had very very very terrible execution here. But good that they took the idea for themselves regardless.

Never really watched Markiplier but after seeing things come up about him in quite a few videos, I gotta say, he seems like a genuinely nice person.
He is! I used to watch him a lot as a kid and he's proved many times to be one of the most genuinely kind youtubers around. If I had to wager my life in a game of which youtuber is going to get exposed next I'd put all my money on markiplier never having a scandal

I definitely hope he'll be able to last without having any scandal whatsoever. Guy deserves it even though i dont watch him as much recently.
He's definitely one of the few TH-cam lets players who aged well, he's a very mature person with an online presence that is overall very positive. He doesn't get involved in drama, he hasn't shouted the n-word live streaming, he's into women his age, basically the best lets player to ever live simply by being an average decent human being
He seems to be decent enough. I've watched since his first channel, waiting for the moment I learn, like countless other youtubers he's got something horrific under the surface

I totally see Markiplier being as professional as described here. and big props to Zoe and John for talking things out! it could've been so easy to break and just give them what they want.
Understand that Polaris back then was an incredible utility for creators. Matti's actions here practically destroyed Polaris, a channel & community that most big youtubers at the time would consider the core of their careers & contacts, their growth. Luckily now we are in a world where networking is much easier & developed for creators.
I remember back when Totalbiscuit discussed this, it's crazy how American reality TV drama was forced into something that would have been quite interesting to watch otherwise

I feel like the core mistake on the part of the producers is forgetting that reality TV drama is usually intentionally internal to a small company or family so that regardless of the drama shown in the acting the brand only benefits. These devs all have careers and aspirations and are not a unified company trying to cash in on dramatics. They're going to check themselves and be professional.
Markiplier being so wholesome that he can stop production for being too nice and thoughtful.

@@ravinraven6913 I have worked in a mixed sex environment for years now. Especially in medical research it's amazing how much the different angles of attack to a problem men and women can have. They are both treated the same way, both are given equal time to talk, nobody treats someone else different because of their sex, but the difference are visible and extremely useful.

Believe it or not, you ARE actually supposed to begin coding without a computer. You're supposed to write out a basic flow of functions and outline the whole program in pseudocode before you ever sit down at the computer. It's one of the first things they teach you if you take an AP or college-level programming class.

Honestly that was the only task that made even a hint of sense. There’s so much work you could do without power and at least it’s game related but an obstacle course wtf is that??Not concept art so much but plan out game mechanics or story or additional characters items leveling etc.
There are some things that don't need power, like coming up with game mechanics, but i agree.......it's not fun to watch, specially at night.
I do actually drink quite a bit of Mountain Dew, but the idea of not being allowed to drink anything else for FOUR DAYS is horrifying. That is an obscene amount of sugar.
I once went about a week drinking nothing but soda (don't ask), and yeah the effects are pretty horrible on productivity and overall mood. You'd think having caffeine essentially on tap would make you hyperactive, but it's more like a perpetual crash.
I used to enjoy a Dew from time to time, but this disaster convinced me to swap to the cool, refreshing taste of #other_brand

@@neoqwerty Yes, marketing is one of those fields where if they do their job right you never notice them. Of course, they also are given to much power over things they don't know about. Matti for example didn't do his job wrong, he had the wrong job. Dude went into something meant to advertise nice people with the same goal as a show meant to show off the worse of humanity. For a reality show it would have worked fine, but for Game Jam? The drama should have been, big bugs breaking a game, time running out for a preset portion, and other ways to make the coding the focus.

I could actually see a Game Jam reality show working. Stretch the time limit from four days to four weeks, make it a solo dev game, and throw in a few challenges. There's 96 hours in four days, so spread that out to 4 hours of dev time a day for 4 weeks. This allows for a longer shooting period, more episodes, and allows the competitions/diary rooms/whatever to not take any time away from the actual game dev.
Maybe like a big brother style thing where they have to all live in the same house

I feel like one of the dumber things about trying to force everyone to drink specifically Mountain Dew, is that PepsiCo has water bottle brands they could have used as alternatives. It would have looked less fake and it still would have been product placement for the larger company to have Mountain Dew cans interspersed with Aquafina bottles. AND I feel like that would have potentially gotten them some sales from people that weren't going to be convinced to buy Mountain Dew regardless of their efforts.

When the contestants themselves make a better Game Jam from just what they already have than the professionals hired with a huge budget to make Game Jam.
I'm glad that had a relatively good ending for the creators but man is it sickening how much a big corporation can come in and destroy something that's meant to be fun and inspiring.
Not only that, but casually enforcing sexism. Thank God for Mark, the dude managed to singlehandedly save everyone in that moment.

I never understood the obsession with pushing Doritos and Mt. Dew as "gaming" food. They're quite possibly the worst food and drink you could have while gaming. You're going to get Dorito dust all over your controller or in between your keys, and if you spill Dew on anything, it'll be sticky FOREVER. Not to mention soda really isn't that great at hydrating you. Just have some water on hand, and unless you're diabetic or hypoglycemic, you really shouldn't need snacks within arms reach at all times. Just get up and make a sandwich or something if you need to.
You don't have the context. No one actually thinks they are the pinnacle of gaming food.
The fuel for gamers:
Water - lots of water
Their live chat - to keep them engaged and motivated in front of a live audience to do well.
Their donations of their live chat to keep the incentive going, as that's their bread and butter.
It isn't any sort of 'juice'.

Trying to get either of those 2 to talk the shit that you see on TV shows sounds impossible. They're both well known for steering clear of antagonizing others and just being good people. I absolutely cannot imagine either of them saying anything close to true shit talking. The most they do are light riffs with friends, not putting down other people who they pretty much work with (semi coworkers with how they're all tied into YT and games).

If I recall correctly, this was one of the biggest red flags that would signal to Totalbiscuit, Jesse Cox, Angry Joe, and others that it might be time to leave Polaris. I don't think it was much longer after this that TB left and took The Co-optional Podcast with him. Then what, a year or two later there was that big tournament that really pissed off Jesse and Angry Joe due to the bullshit Polaris pulled and just how unwatchable the edited footage was.
I can only imagine the dogshit show that would have resulted.

I've seen sports events where the athletes have bottles or cans of energy drink but it's actually just water.
But they didn't have to DIY it. The drink maker actually manufactured them like that. With a small print that says it's only water.

Just five minutes of research into who they are could've helped them completely shift course away from this travesty.

I love how corperate greed and meddling ruined and wasted like 400k to what could have probably been a cool show just for some of the people they tried to screw over to do exactly what that show was suppose to be and do it successfully

Honestly, I think you were on to something with the idea of “Gamers” doing the reality show challenges. Let the devs do their jobs and have the “Gamers” complete to give their teams advantages that could help in development like extra time or something. That way you could represent game development fairly faithfully and have your teacup shallow “entertainment” on the side.
That would have required the people in charge actually having the faintest idea of what they were making a show about, though. They were just paid to make "generic american reality show #3726274 with video game theme"

It would play to their strengths really nicely. The developers would work without cameras constantly shoved in their faces, and the youtubers who were accustomed to cameras and filming would do what they do best and have fun doing challenges on camera, hoping to help the rest of the team via external means. It gives everyone almost equal purpose, which is great

Those non-compete type clauses have always been strange to me. It’s weird how protective companies get over non-threatening competition.
Like in the theater industry if a show is on Broadway, no one within 100 miles is allowed to perform the same show. As if a local high school production is going to outshine Broadway professionals.
Also, you can't enforce something people didn't sign.
It's been quite some time since actors were hired for their acting ability, so the high school kids might actually be the better actors these days. It's at least possible.

What's the most insane part of this story? The fact that two people who have complete opposite opinions can buttheads and still stop and take a moment to discuss things respectfully and keep things civil. It's funny how the computer science class I went to had an event where all of us developed our own game in one night in a competition for fun while enjoying a movie together and it was able to work perfectly when it's something that the teacher just put together to have a fun day with his students, and when money gets involved it changes into something else that isn't fun at all.
Exactly, I know this is a year ago, but the moment something becomes about money it completely changes, like esports for example. With esports, the fun and pleasure from a video game completely changes and now you’re only doing it for money.

although the whole thing was a shitshow, i'm genuinely happy that when things started to go south the contestants stood up for each other and walked out. as experienced game developers they're probably no strangers to workplace harassment and that's why they had none of matti's shit.
Specifically, it was Zoe that refused to let them use any footage of her, even after Matti got the boot after day 1. The others did what Zoe asked of them.

the reason reality tv is known as unscripted media is because reality TV do not have writers. Or at least in the same way as how a TV show have writers. Literally the rise of reality TV was because of a particularly difficult writers strike.
