yeah.. the stamina it takes to sit through over 11 hours of blindfolded gameplay with sometimes highly inconsistent strategies is amazing. like wingcap, manta ray etc. are just utterly dumb stars to nail blindfolded. there are just not really any good setups for a lot of stars and they rely a lot muscle memory and hoping for the best.
It's such a hype run too. 5 hours under estimate, going for crazy tricks in last bowser stage "for the fans" and nailing them first try. I'm so glad I caught the latter third of it live.

As a musician, "beatcounting" is something I often do without even thinking about it in speedruns (not blindfolded) whenever timing is required x)
You can get pretty precise timing with specific subdivisions, like the 4th 16th note or stuff like that, purely off the rhythm
Yeah, rhythm strats that use the game's music are always my favorites, especially cause we know that even professional musicians tend to speed up their internal rhythm under stress. I've come up with a few of those for Super Metroid, and one for a couple of the bomb jumps in A Link to the Past.

These men's passion for completely memorizing the layout of a 28 year old video game to the point where they can see it vividly in their minds eye behind a blindfold is sort of inspiring. Shows anyone can pursue any challenge and get satisfaction out of it.
The best thing about Summoning Salt videos is the writing. I have never met Bubzia but the way his journey is narrated I felt all of his hardships and genuinely felt for him on all his highs and lows throughout the video.
I'll recommend you to watch Bubzia's 120 star blindfolded world record if you ever get the time, it's over 11 hours so it's a long watch, and he wasn't quite as good back then as he is now (still extremely good for a blindfolded player of course, but you might notice less consistency and speed compared to his most recent runs), but it's still probably my favourite speedrun of all time, and I'm pretty sure he's still the only person who has completed a 120 star run blindfolded, so it isn't exactly easy haha.
He really tells their story so well.
@@robfortune6 I gotta say, there is next to no (but not quite zero) chance that I'll actually watch that, but I kind of want to let it stream all the way thru just to give him that full watch credit.
You've got to give props to his cadence and delivery, as well as his video editing and music editing as well. It all comes together to make these objectively useless achievements, by human standards, feel like he's narrating our journey to reach the moon.

A minor thing I love about blindfolded speedruns are the various ways runners block their vision. Blankets, multiple sleep masks, a cereal box, not facing the screen with another camera angle proving that you’re not looking at a secret screen, it’s just a silly thing that I appreciate
This video undersells just how absolutely batshit the 120 star run was. There could be an entire other video on how much work went in to stars like DDD 100 or the wingcap reds.
I can't imagine how demoralizing it must be to encounter a player like Nobori, someone with such pure technical ability that he can destroy a category through pure skill. I have so much respect for Bubzia still pushing and eventually surpassing such a player through practice and strategizing.

Don't get me wrong, TTC100 is obviously harder than any star in the blindfolded 70 star route
That reprieve during the montage of Bubzia where its just him jumping for the final star and missing has to be simultaneously the funniest and saddest thing I've ever seen
Hilarious
After the recent blindfolded drama, it's good to see this poping up and telling the history of people who actually does it legitimately.
Came here for this
Hard to say this video shows legitimacy when it requires faith to believe in since none of the clips used in this video actually show the blindfolded player inputting controls into a controller since the controller and hands are always off screen. Occam's razor is that it's easier to fake a blindfold run using simple tricks than it would be to do it legitimately, such as a player using a pre-recorded clip and then recording themselves miming along with it blindfolded, or simply having someone else off screen playing for them. Where are the videos that captures a blindfolded person sitting side-by-side directly next to a TV (not in front of it) and 64 showing them input controls into a controller in one shot so we can actually see them playing the game and the TV shows the synchronized movement of the game with their controller inputs? Hypothetically the TV and 64 could be physically displayed behind the player with the controller in their hands since the player shouldn't need to have the TV in front of them, if these are legit. Do any of these videos exist? This would be a reasonable standard of legitimacy.

I thought about going over the other categories but they didn’t have an interesting story. Even a combined video with all the categories would've been odd, jumping all over the place and trying to talk about how all of them progressed - better to just focus on the most popular one.

Definition of hard work vs. talent.
I love how Bubzia worked on this and how knowing his limitations worked on alternative strategies and overall shows how working hard for your goals will over come any talent, as undeniably nobori is a great runner
Both runners had to spend a lot of work to be this good. They just have different strengths.
For someone who isn’t in the speed running community, these stories are amazing. Thanks for your hard work in putting these together.
I love how Bubzia is getting proper recognition now. Even after completing his LEGENDARY 11+ hour speedrun his channel and video really didn’t have anywhere near enough views. This will help him massively
Nobori's memory has the capability of mirroring the best times of visual runs. It's up to him to push his gift that far
no it doesn't lol. No blindfolded runner is ever going to compare to high level visual runs. Sub-20 is already a ludicrous barrier to cross for blindfolded runners, and that's nowhere near the best.
Talent vs Workrate stories are always amazing. I mean, you admire Bubzia's grind and his mindset and game-intelligence but also when you see Nobori playing you're just dumbfounded
I just CANNOT understand how this is possible. The mental map needed ALONE is staggering
Imagine being Bubzia, having your greatest achievement absolutely outdone by a newcomer and coming to the realization that you will never surpass their raw talents.
Incredible dedication to his craft.

Another great piece of audiovisual work as always. I like seeing the evolution of mic quality (and Bubzia's camera). Insane to see how much this record has improved over the years as well! I have been an active watcher in the community since mid-late 2021

I love these types of content, really appreciate the quality! Its a really good show for something like a snack!
This whole community is so wholesome. Sharing strats and pushing each other to be the best. You can tell they all want to push the boundaries of the category more than they care about their personal performance.
My favorite video of yours since the original SM64 breakdown you did
I think what makes the story of this record great is that it wasn't founded only on sheer willpower alone - everybody is genuinely assisting each other. In the very least, assisting each other against Nobori, but still. Seeing Hendy and Bubzia work together like that with their strats was awesome.
I dont know how many years ago it was, but I found ur channel from the blindfolded mike tyson punch out run, and now u bless me with this, thank u bro appreciate all the hardwork i watch all of your videos but i am so excited to watch this one, thank u
When I saw the title of this video, I wasn't sure if I would like it that much, admittedly not knowing much about blindfolded speedrunning. Then I watched the video and holy crap it was amazing! Just had to comment saying that I for one am totally in favor of you doing more blindfold speedrun videos, this one instantly became one of my favorites, and that's saying something, believe me. You are amazing sir, I continue to look forward to your new videos.
The most unbelievable thing is that nobari came back after quitting. Usually Japanese speed runners just go awol and never return. 😮
Congrats on being YTP'd
This video was amazingly well put together, I love your videos and this one was a joy to watch
The runners in this cathegory and their personalities/drive for pushing it is insane
I just want to say that I love how good you are at using excellent music and pacing to make every video hit with the emotion of an oberdramatized boxing movie (it's a complement I promise). You have made a feel videos that actually made me want to cry.

Mario getting burnt by lava perfectly timed with the song.
Every Summoning Salt video is a blessing.
My favourite content on youtube! Thanks again for all the amazing work you do, SummoningSalt.
I need more of these to come out! Your videos are so good!
I always argued to friends that i was a better driver in real life because i had spent so much time time playing video games. Both require hand-eye coordination. But watching this video, learning that the eyes dont have to be involved at all, really changes my perspective. I'm ready to try driving from my house to the grocery store BLINDFOLDED.
Wait, where is our graph? That was epic to see it moving and the runners beating each other.
Please bring it back!🙏
There's 1 miracle run i've seen and heard about, which is from a blind person, who has always been blind, and completed OoT without help.
Unless one's blind from birth, and does it the same way the runner(no speedrunner, i think?) did, one cannot beat that category.
This was a huge climb, and the speedrunners did well, fighting and taking breaks when they needed to.
Thanks Summoning Salt, for another nice storytelling video!
Awesome video! Insane amounts of skill and dedication from all 3 runners
blindfolded runs always have the best youtube comments, people will see the hundreds or thousands of hours of work that goes into the routing and then just comment "fake"
Well the numerous idiots who have blatantly and obviously cheated blindfold runs have made it far more difficult for the genuine ones to convince people.
Scariest phrase know to Man:
"...and THEN"
One of your best videos yet! What an incredible journey for Bubzia! Thank you for this capsule of gaming history!
Much respect to these absolute mad lads. The amount of skill required for this type of gameplay is staggering to me. I love 64, but I struggle to progress through it even with my eyes open!
Ayo Dathings shouted you out
How was Bubz blindfolded 120 star archievement just mentioned in passing? I mean yeah it wasn't a real speedrun but it was such a big moment for the whole SM64 community and a big milestone for the blindfolded one.
According to Salt answering a similar question on Twitter/X, he did want to cover it, but felt that going over all 120 would bore the audience because of the stars aren't that interesting, or something around that
@@silverflight01 well I cant really understand him there, because the video title isnt history of blindfolded 16 star but mario 64 as a whole and leaving 120 out is like telling the history of the entire world world and leaving out a whole continent. But thanks for the info! 🙂👍🏻
Everyone: “Ok, so I have to wait 3 beats then jump. Then wait another 4.”
Nobori: “Screw it, we ball.”
Oh heck yeah. I've been following the blindfolded SM64 speedrun community for a long time. Super cool to see you do a vid on it!
