    The last time I tried to sew over pins, my needle hit a pin & broke. The only thing that saved my eye was my glasses. I have never sewed over another pin 📍 since.

      Wow! I don’t blame you! I know some people do sew over them but the minute I would try I would break a needle or something like that would happen so I don’t take the risk. 😳

      Same thing for me, I accidentally sewed on one, not seeing it, scared the crap out of me, and just missed my face.

      Sewing over pins can knock out the timing on your machine. I never do that. I used to, and also had the needle break and go flying!

      You should NEVER see over pins. It's like shrapnel flying and I've witnessed someone nearly losing their sight having done this.

      I sewed over a pin once when using my embroidery machine. Not only did it break the needle and nearly put my eye out but it broke something in the machine itself and had to leave it in for an expensive repair.

    I have made several quilts this way but used a bit smaller square, 4" or even 3.5" and placed it in random places, not in the middle and it looks GREAT and adds some interest

    You make this look so easy!! Thank you for explaining the process so clearly, and thank you for explaining what a layer cake is. I'm definitely going to try this. You had so many helpful tips, like using your smallest quilt block and then making all of the blocks that same size. And I love how quickly and easily you added the sashing between the inside blocks. Brilliant! You made a very classy looking quilt...and you did the quilt top in only 4 or 5 hours, Wow! Whoever gets that quilt is lucky. Thanks again for sharing this.

    I have a zillion charm squares, so I tried this with a 5" and a 2.5" square. I also put a 2.5" square of batting under the small square. It worked! I think I have the beginning of a trapunto quilt!! I have a bunch of things I should be doing, but it has turned into a quilty play day. Thank you for the inspiration!

    I'm watching this with my 86 year-old mom who has been sewing for over 60 years. She has sewn many quilts over the years, they're all smaller pieces sewn together. She was amazed when she saw the final results of the first block, we both thought it was all pieces, not a small block sewn on top of a big block. This is so easy I might give it a try when I finally get around to trying my hand at sewing. I do want to do it some day, I just don't have the time for it. But a project like this might be what I need. This and other quick and easy projects I've seen on youtube.

    I loved your idea/video. I wanted to make a signature quilt for a special wedding. The only thing different I did from yours was: Before sewing the last side of the original block, I inserted a 3 1/2" sq of a (light cardboard/ postcard/ cereal box ) into the center pocket before sewing the last strip side ( from the back) . Then I sewed it closed. I sewed all the blocks the same way.,and finished the quilt top like yours..... I brought the quilt top to the wedding and had the guest sign the center squares ( the cardboard made a solid surface to write on). I also made extra blocks, if more signatures were needed and for absent guests. After I got home, I cut a 1/4" slit with the rotory cutter on one side (the cardboard also helped) to remove the cardboard. I then cut the other 3 sides with scissors, to save the squares for trimming the border. A few of the extra blocks i used on the quilt back. Again THANK YOU for your beautiful block idea ❤❤❤

      I’ve done some for customers where they get the squares from us and bring them back signed and we make the quilt top. Fun and great heirlooms

    Thank you for the new technique. You are very easy to follow and thanks for choosing the fabric choice, my step father and husband died from Parkinson’s. Glad I can make a project from this beautiful fabric.

    That was like one of the best tips ever about sewing the 1/4" seam like that. Brilliant! Do you lay out the squares to decide what looks good next to each other, or do you throw caution to the wind & pick them up randomly? To me, it looks like several reds are together & then several grays are together. It would take me 4 or 5 days or weeks just to lay them out in the right pattern. 😅

      @sewcharmingquiltshop  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Sometimes I plan it and sometimes I don’t. This time I just made sure that each square was made up of different colors. There is no top or bottom to the rows so when I sewed them together, yes some reds and such ended up close. It doesn’t bother me though so since it was sewn together and i liked the look, I left it alone. 😁

      I would probably preplan where the blocks go and also make sure that the one way fabrics all go the same way.

    Oh my gosh i came across your channel today. And that is all it took to join your site. I Love the simplicity of this block The folding and earning part makes it so easy to fold over and so quarter inch seams. The block comes out so perfect, I was trying to look for a video that was easy to start a new quilt. I have a lot of fabric not so many layer cakes, and charm packs. But I have yardage and can cut the squares. I need to start on making quilts for my six grandbabies. This is perfect easy, thank you so much for this video and I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos from your I'm not sure if I caught the information right did you say one layer cake, and a cham pack makes a lap size quilt ?
