@donnarichey144 it is only the second example where the backing isn’t quilted - but the batting is and the back is secured row by row with the joining. In the other two the back is quilted row by row before it is joined to the next row. Hope that makes sense!

No it isn’t fully quilted - it is secured across the back by the next join. You can add quilting lines either side of the ditch for example if you want more quilting on the back in that method but not as intricate as what was done on the individual blocks. Every method has a trade off. For this one the unquilted back is the trade off for being able to have fancier block quilting. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you for dropping this video. For the last eight (8) months, I have not been able to make myself set down and sew. I love making quilt tops; but, I don't like to quilt them. I can't afford to pay someone to quilt them for me. Plus, I can't afford a long-arm quilting machine (and I don't have the space to set one up anyway ). What you just showed me (in this video) may be the answer to my problems. I just Subscribed to your channel. I'm a lady U.S. Army Veteran. A group called Visiting Angles is going to help me get to and from the VA Hospital next month (on that day I am not allowed to drive myself anywhere). I have been thinking that they would know which Veterans really need (and want) a quilt. If they don't already have quilts in their vehicles, they may need some. I might get to use a lot of my stash if I find a good reason to make quilts. Helping Veterans is a very good reason to make quilts. You're a very special Helping Angle to me.

Thank you SO much for the whole quilt demonstration because that's when the light bulb went off for me. I am trying this as soon as i finish my current quilt top.
My mama used to make quilt tops and put them up on a frame for us all to quilt. She put the cotton batting in them and they were so warm. In the winter we used these instead of having heat on. I remember after my sister got married, I used to have a quilt around me, I’d stand in front of the heater with my quilt open. My quilt would get warm, I’d wrap it around me to hold in the heat and run and jump into bed. I slept warm all night long.
I have done both the first method (with a serger but don't recommend using it) and the third ...especially in adding borders to an already quilted quilt. I used a joining stitch to secure the batt to the seam, then proceeded with my decorative stitching. Great video!
This is great for those of us without easy access to a long-arm (or long-armer). I also love that you can get a kind of "bonus quilt" on the back with different fabrics. Nice clear instructions!
I asked you a question about using twin needles, a short while back (on one of your videos - not sure which one). Came back to let you know that it worked well by sewing on each side of the 'ditch' (so, effectively 4 rows of stitching) which created a sort of double row frame on each square. I used a small zigzag over the ditch to join it to the backing. I'd post a photo, but, it seems I can't. Thank you, so much for this video. It was the only QAYG video that, actually, showed how to add the extra pieces and made any sense. It's the first quilt I've ever made and, thanks to you, I'll be making many more ❤ Bright blessings 🌞
This is perfect. I bought a tiny 30$ sewing machine and it doesn't have an arm long enough (or motor powerful enough) for regular quilting. This method will be great for me to get rid of all my scraps. What a great video.
I have 30 different blocks of 10 inches. I was stressing about how to put these together. Now I know. So thank you so much for your informative, easy to use video. I just need to get cutting out batting and backings so I can finish it as a large bed quilt. You're very easy to listen to as I'm a relative beginner and can only sew straight lines but have now bought a heavier duty machine as my little domestic one freaks out with more than 4 layers. Thank you so much! Decades ago, I met a woman who made charity quilts with this method. She printed out the instructions for me from a magazine or book(?) and I put them in a “safe place” never to be found again. Thank goodness for you and YT! 🥰
Yes other folk have also told me they saw this method ‘decades’ ago. I can’t for the life of me understand why it seems to have faded to obscurity. I only saw it by chance in a video about qayg on a serger - which is kind of niche. Haven’t seen it any of the more mainstream qayg places. 🤷♀️
@@ScrapFabricLoveI think when lots of people got long arm quilting machines , quilt as you go just got left behind. Many ladies were happy to get a long armer quilt for them. Trouble is not everyone can afford it plus as we get older our bodies can’t handle the big quilts on our domestic machines. Thank you for your research and presenting it to us. ❤😊
This was a very timely video for me. I started a Christmas quilt three years ago with hand embroidered blocks in the centre and pieced blocks around the edges. I wanted to quilt it myself, so I started quilting each panel or block as each was finished. I am getting to the stage where I was starting to think about joining blocks and adding backing and this video has certainly given me something to think about! Fingers crossed it’s finished for this Christmas!

Wow this is great ! If you had only put this video about 2 weeks ago , it would’ve been the answer to my problem! We were having a fair in town , the quilt top had already been sewn , I needed batting got it , had the backing to it ! So I attach the batting, I think I watched every quilt video on Pinterest & TH-cam 😑❗️ I attach the backing , use quilting pins to hold it , this is where my problems begin ! My quilt pattern is “ drunkards path “ I have a regular sewing machine 😮 , attached a walking foot , then I marked with a chalk the area to be quilted , rolled up one whole side of quilt , just trying to get it in my machine was a battle ! I did finish it , put the border . Took it in on Friday , only to be told the quilt judging was done on Thursday! What , I was ready to cry , the ladies , collecting crafts , crochet work & canning said “ you can leave it with us , see what the judges think !” I got 2 nd place , but after this ordeal, I’m thinking it maybe my first & last quilting project!
Congratulations on your 2nd place! Obviously the judges don’t think it should be your last quilt! It definitely can be a battle getting a big quilt through many sewing machines - good for you for getting it done!

Kristen ! I was very inspired by your method and I modified it a little bit to work easier for myself. Here is what I did and see if you would consider to try. I used this order: Join row 1 with row 2 Quilt row 1 Join row 3 to row 2 Quilt row 2 Continue like that until all rows joined and quilted. The reason for this: order: not to join a quilted row with a non quilted row for the reason you mentioned, they might have different dimensions after one row is quilted and one not. What else I did: I first basted the tops together with a red color thread to make sure all the important points were matching and nothing shifted during the sawing of all layers. The basting I did was using a long stitch setting and sawn at less than 1/4 inch so it was easy to remove after the rows were joined. Basting can be done by hand too. I consider this step important when you have blocks with multiple points that are important to match exactly. In my experience, when sawing multiple layers things tend to shift and is nice to avoid that. I would appreciate your comment. Thank you for your videos 👍🤗

Thank you! This is a great idea! I struggled with a 65" x 65" QAYG quilt and rolling up the sides to add the 4th row. This is much simpler method. This was my 2 ND quilt as a new quilter. Don't want to do it the old way again!
This is brilliant! I love making quilt tops but always have trouble getting the layers to match and stay together - hours of checking and re-pinning will be a nothing but a memory . Attaching batting and backing has always been a nightmare but no more!!! Thank you!!

I actually found this method from other folk on TH-cam who were making quilts with sergers. I am still confused why I don’t see this method more often - or why the sergers were involved in the first place 🤷♀️

I prefer to hand quilt but I used a high thread count white sheet as a background fabric and it is too thick to accept the needle by hand. Dreading trying to wrestle a king quilt through the throat of my 201. I think I will go with option 1 since I like the way it looks when the back is quilted like the top and I only planned to straight line quilt anyways. Hoping it works out. Love your channel. Thank you very much for this video! I have always sewn my top together, then pinned the batting and the back to it, then hand sewn the quilting part, I like doing it that way, but I'm going to try the rows you did. Would be way faster
2 great demonstrations of different methodologies. I didnt really enjoy the QAYG experience on my first attempt, but am really drawn to having a go at the 2nd method. Perhaps I'll test it out on a small Project Linus quilt initiallt Thanks for sharing x
Different methods will suit different folk - we all have different priorities with what we are looking for from a QAYG method - probably that’s why there are so many different ones out there! Hope you find a way you like!

I really like this idea bec you cd almost make a reversible sort of scrappy quilt by using different fabrics on the back of blocks rather than all one fabric.

Yes I got confused when I first found this method thinking you need the serger - it all started clicking when I realised the serger wasn’t essential 😂

Thank you! This is a great idea! I struggled with a 65" x 65" QAYG quilt and rolling up the sides to add the 4th row. This is much simpler method. This was my 2 ND quilt as a new quilter. Don't want to do it the old way again!

This is brilliant! I love making quilt tops but always have trouble getting the layers to match and stay together - hours of checking and re-pinning will be a nothing but a memory . Attaching batting and backing has always been a nightmare but no more!!! Thank you!!

I have quilted in my life! A few years ago when looking at someone else’s video, I thought what you actually made. I was like, why doesn’t she just add the batting in, quilt it with lines, or not and then add another row. Thank you for having the same idea and putting into practice!! : )
I actually found this method from other folk on TH-cam who were making quilts with sergers. I am still confused why I don’t see this method more often - or why the sergers were involved in the first place 🤷♀️

Thank you Kristin. Perfect timing. I have a king quilt top and back ready to baste, but I have been stalling. I prefer to hand quilt but I used a high thread count white sheet as a background fabric and it is too thick to accept the needle by hand. Dreading trying to wrestle a king quilt through the throat of my 201. I think I will go with option 1 since I like the way it looks when the back is quilted like the top and I only planned to straight line quilt anyways. Hoping it works out.

Thank you very much for this video! I have always sewn my top together, then pinned the batting and the back to it, then hand sewn the quilting part, I like doing it that way, but I'm going to try the rows you did. Would be way faster

2 great demonstrations of different methodologies. I didnt really enjoy the QAYG experience on my first attempt, but am really drawn to having a go at the 2nd method. Perhaps I'll test it out on a small Project Linus quilt initiallt

Different methods will suit different folk - we all have different priorities with what we are looking for from a QAYG method - probably that’s why there are so many different ones out there! Hope you find a way you like!

I really like this idea bec you cd almost make a reversible sort of scrappy quilt by using different fabrics on the back of blocks rather than all one fabric.
Yes I like not having to piece a big backing and having that ‘striped ‘ quilt look on the back.
