It's interesting to hear this attitude about Walmart fabric amongst American quilters. From a British perspective, let me tell you, you guys in America are BLESSED by God to even have the option of Walmart fabric! Our supermarkets here do not routinely sell cheapie fabric. Quilting (unless you're recycling) is nearly always an expensive endeavour and quilt/fabric shops are few and far between, even in London. I went on a trip to Florida years ago, and when I saw the fabric in Walmart I thought I'd died and gone to heaven Lol!!

I actually bought a few single quilts covers marked down to $10 but they had at least 4-5 metres of fabric. I’m thinking of making my dogs a quilt with doggie prints and I can use the quilt covers to add to it to make it bigger. They are of Australian bird life so it will work as the dogs love to bark at them on their walks. Thanks for the idea.

This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched and the beginning part about Walmart fabric was all I needed to hear to subscribe. As much as I like the pricier fabric, my growing list of projects I want to do has me on more of a Walmart and Joanne’s budget 🤷🏼♀️ everything I make can’t be done in Kaffe Fassett fabric
Thank you for subscribing. I am with you. I like my expensive fabric and I also love my reasonably priced fabric. I know multiple people can relate. Thank you for watching. April
Girl, same!!!!! I have a few yards of expensive fabric and I still haven't even used them yet BECAUSE they were so expensive and I don't want to end up not liking the project I use them for!
@@IdratherbeinHobbiton I like to experiment on my less expensive fabric and use the more expensive for the projects I am sure about. Although as I get better at the recovery part I get more brave. Thank you for watching and commenting. April
Walmart has great selection of one yard cuts. They work great for three yard quilts if you’ve ever seen those patterns. I find myself going to different Walmart’s they all seem to have a slightly different selection. Not sure why
Walmart fabric quality has improved over the years. And I agree 100% with what she says about budgeting. I know poly cotton blend isn't the preferred fabric either, but the first quilt I made 40 years ago I used what I had. The 100% cotton has totally disintegrated but the poly cotton fabrics are still holding together and holding the color pretty well.
As I was watching this awesome video, I couldn't help but think, oooooo, I want to make it and then cut it corner to corner, flip those around and sew together one more time to see what kind of a wonderful pattern you would get! I know what my next project is going to be!
I’ve just come across you by chance. How lovely to find someone who understands we don’t all have unlimited funds but still want to sew. I’ve just made my very first baby quilt and bought fat quarters for £5. I was feeling guilty that it’s not the best quality but equally I don’t have the skills to waste £22 on the better quality ones I saw today. Thank you for making us feel better that it’s ok to be creative on a budget. I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos.
I never paid any attention to the quilt snobs!!!! Used whatever I wanted and pleased myself (lol). I don't do "quilting exams" so I'm good to go. The recipients of my quilts were always happy and pleased to receive them........
OH! And you gave me the idea for my first charity quilt. The Barbie quilt you did with the panel and Barbie fabrics cut into strips. I took a panel with a bear in the woods that was on clearance. Found 3 coordinating woodsy fabrics to cut into strips and sew around and around till it got big enough then instead of quilting it on my small machine I bought polyfill to make it fluffy and hand tied it. that was also a first and fun.
Yay! I envy those with the patience to crochet. I tried it. A guy at work does it so he will pay attention during meetings. He tries to teach me. I just don’t have the hand eye coordination. And I want to use a machine. LOL. Thank you for watching and commenting. April
I'm new to quilting and I have learned so much watching your videos. Biggest thing is you explain things so simply and I don't have anxiety when mistakes happen. Thank you.

I have made many quilts from disappearing blocks over the years... Never occured to me to go big. Now the mind reels with deconstructing them further even! Great idea! Thanks for sharing
Love, love, love this idea, you clever lady - so cool!!! 5-pack FQ at Walmart here (western Canada 🇨🇦) is $14 + tax, and premium fabric at the quilt shops run $19/metre to $23/metre. I started out buying $10 scrap bags and made myself some really lovely blocks. Every quilt is made with a ton of love, even if one can’t afford to pay a ton of money. Huge difference in the value of a quilt, and the cost. 😊
Absolutely! Every quilt I make with love and that makes it priceless. Don't you love how we, Canadians, pay so much more for the same things! I wish we had the same sales in Canada that Michael's or Joann's have in the US. 😥
I started quilting when I saw a trip around the world hanging in a window.no money..I used some clothing I had from family and started cutting squates...lol Took forever..2nd quilt bought shirts and full skirts at yard sales..cheaper..now I am 77 and make all out of scraps. So true about buying less expensive fabric. I've been Quilting for over 30 yrs and would never sugest some one pay the crazy prices to make their first quilt. I still don't. There are plenty of places to get discounted top quality fabrics especially on line. Great video and great advice along with it. Very nice quilt for beginners. I would do a little more Quilting to hold those big pieces together though. But whatever floats your boat as they say. Thanks for the tutorial. 🙂
This is a wonderful video for those exploring quilting. I wish I had seen it years ago when I started, so thank you for helping the newest quilters. I also will use cheaper fabrics for certain projects and for a first time making a new pattern. Nothing wrong with it. Save the expensive fabric for special projects ;) I was raised quilting recycled cloth from worn out clothing so any new fabric is a blessing ;)
Hello. I'm working in my sewing room today and just happen to type in "quilt" for something to keep me company. This video popped up. Oh my Goodness! I was hooked within the first 10 seconds!! Great video!
I want quilting to be for everyone. And it should be for everyone. My grandmother didn’t make clothes for her children because she was wealthy. And quilting wasn’t started by those with means. We can all quilt and love it. Thank you for watching and commenting. 😀 April
This is my first video of yours and I'm so excited about trying my first quit. You have no idea how fearful I have been about a sewing fancier fabric!! and I love this idea. Thank you! more beginner videos please.
Getting ready to do my very first quilt. I bought 5 packs of 5 fat quarters from hobby lobby $50 for 25 fat quarters. I also got a pack of light batting to do a queen-size quilt I figure I'll do batting on my Edging to make it a king-size quilt. I am going to follow your instructions because they are the plain and simple and I want to thank you very much
I love this! Thanks so much for showing us how we can make a quilt with cheaper fabric. I’m a quilt novice, and the thought of messing up £s worth of fabric has put me off plenty of times. Such an easy pattern to follow too! You’re a star! ⭐️
April Story thank you for the encouragement. I am excited. I purchased a foot for my sewing machine that has a quarter inch seam guide. I think that will help set me up for success. Now, I am just waiting for the fabric to arrive.
I just discovered your channel and applaud you for speaking the truth. Not everyone can afford the expensive fabric and especially for beginners, they don’t feel like they will “ruin” something. I also like your snappy instructions.😊👍🏻
I'm a fiber artist and use all kinds of different fabrics and other nontraditional materials in my work, so I agree don't pooh pooh Walmart. And love this little quilt. Great design for charity quilts to get done quickly and provide warmth to some. Thanks for sharing.
What a great idea!! I've been picking up the Harry Potter FQ bundles (at Walmart} and now I know just what pattern to use. Thank you so much. Yes, Walmart does have decent fabrics. I'm not a fabric snob....
I have purchased those same fat quarters and you now what - I am going to use them for the same for my daughter. I am not a fabric snob either. I am a paper snob. LOL April
I came to TH-cam to find a quilt pattern to use the Harry Potter bundles I got from Walmart. I have never made a quilt, but I do sew. I am going to figure out how many squares I need to make a full size or queen quilt.
@@sherrlon this will be a great pattern to start with. I would think maybe 15 fat quarters. And cut into the four squares and then maybe cut those four into four. And of course sew them back together. You will have to share how you do it. :-) April
I watched this almost two years ago, before I subscribed. ( sorry it took me so long, I love watching you and Dia) I kept wondering why it didn't look like yours. Today after re watching, I realized I sewed the fat quarters the wrong way. 🤣😂It still came out nice and my sweet bestie loves it. 🥰🤩😍
Thant you for this super easy quilt tutorial! I am a beginner quilter and I'm not about to spend a ton of money on fabric for a project I am just learning. The price of the fabric should not matter, if the product is made with love!
I have no problem with Walmart fabric. I have just completed my first 3 yard quilt with it. I was putting it off so long because I was terrified of cutting. You made it look so easy! And if I screwed it up it wasn't $12.99 a yard. I'm on my second and two more in line. What fun it is! You learn as you go and I just might tackle the more expensive fabrics.
I try to recycle fabric as much as possible because I enjoy the challenge of matching and then joy me too of seeing familiar fabric in a new light! Nothing wrong with Walmart/Aldi/whatever, not everybody can afford the expensive lines but shouldn’t be prevented from having a great hobby!
I just love your energy and can’t wait to follow...unfortunately I waited until my children were grown and my career starting winding down before I took up quilting so I need to start from the very beginning...thankfully a very fast learner 🤗
Well, I'm gonna give this a try. I was at my cousins, and she asked if i wanted bags of fabric, and I told her no. I saw your video this morning and immediately called her back and told her I'd take her fabric when i heard you say $6.99 a yard at Walmart, lol.
I love your sense of humor!!! It's so refreshing. My pretty much ONLY store for everything is Walmart. Even fabric!! All things crafting too. So thank you, bcuz NO we all can't afford those outrageous prices per Yard @ most Fabric Stores! GTG, I'm going to watch more of your Videos!! 😍
Thank you. You are so right - I didn't even think about that. I do Wal-mart fat quarters. I found some 3 Wishes fabric in fat quarters at Joanns. 😀. Thank you for watching and commenting. April
In reality...as it was my first quilt ever...took me longer that 3 hours for the top and ... as for making it an actual quilt...about a week. I admit though, if it wasn't for not having even sufficient cutting and measuring tools, it would have been a much less time consuming project. But it was a great project to do first as the skills learned just made it all make sense! My second quilt will be so much easier and hopefully come out even better. I surely appreciate your work here. Thanks for making it all make sense!
I did a similar one but actually no binding. I sandwiched my fabric and batting, then sewed around it an left a spot open to turn inside out. For “binding look” I sewed all around the edges. One close to the edge, the other about a 1/2 inch away. I then stitched in the ditch, for the quilting! Loved your idea for the nine patch!
I was thinking the same thing. Just use the flip method, and the quilt now only needs quilting. Just another method which I think might work well here since there are not a ton of edge seams. Thanks for the idea. The quilt turned out great. Really love the colors together.
@@aprilscraftroom I have made a baby quilt, and want to back it with flannel or cuddle fabric. With these two backings, would you use batting between the layers like a typical quilt, or leave the batting out? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks for a great idea. I found some great princess fabric at Wal-Mart in fat quarters but didn't buy them. I didn't know what quilt pattern I'd use for them. Now I know. Thanks again.

Hi there! This video just popped up in my feed today, I watched, and I thoroughly enjoyed!! My very first quilt was a traditional log cabin and I bought my fabric at JoAnn's. That was over 20 years ago and that quilt is still in great shape. Since then, I've learned the difference in fabric quality BUT, hey, you buy what you can and what you want! I totally agree with you!! I'll be watching more videos; I love to learn new things!!
Thank you. I am so glad you found me. I use Joann's fabric all the time. You can almost tell my feel whether a fabric is good. :-). Thank you for watching. April
@@skylark5789 Sometimes the more expensive fabric doesn't feel any better than the less expensive fabric - I agree. Someone commented that Walmart fabric has a lot of sizing in it which might make it feel like a more expensive fabric. Either way - if I like it - I know i will use it no matter how inexpensive the fabric was. :-)
This is how my grandmother and mother would make quilts. When they wanted smaller blocks they would continue doing steps 1 2 and 3 until the blocks where smaller. If they wanted the blocks to be triangular. They would cut the blocks diagonal. Then mix the patterns up and sew.
Was looking at another of your videos and realized I'd never commented on this one. Saw it two years ago when I was in the midst of making a "bunch" of quilts for Christmas and needed a quick replacement for something else I had planned to make. OMG, this has become my favorite "go to" quickie quilt design!! I'd always seen other quilters talk about the design they make over and over but never had one. Now this is mine! I made that Christmas quilt, then made another one for a raffle (the winner was thrilled with it!), I have another one that I need to finish quilting for a gift, pieced another one this past Spring after seeing a "couldn't pass it up" 9 pc FQ bundle and have fabrics pulled for three more for gifts. Also love how this is a great pattern to learn about choosing fabrics that go together. The video on the same design that Matt @ Scrappy Patch did was a big help in understanding just how the fabrics you choose will "play" in the design. And big ups to Darlene Michaud for inspiring us all! So sorry for the long and long over due comment but just had to pass along my appreciation to you for sharing this!
I have been quilting for 40 years and I am a fan of Walmart fabric! Yes, joanns has a larger selection, but also more money and Walmart is closer to me...I go to joanns only if I have errands near it...

I love their fat quarter solids for things like mug rugs. I even bought a bolt of their solid red to use as the backing for some Advent calendars I made. $25 for 8 yards of fabric - can’t beat that! I’ve also used their holiday fabrics for quilts and once they’ve been quilted and washed, I think they’re soft and snuggly.

Same with my Grandmother and Great Grandmother. They would have fainted at the price of fabric. :-). Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
I love seeing the fabric from my dresses, along with fabric I recognized from my cousin's and my aunt's dressed - in Grandmother's quilts.
Hi Lisa.
How are you feeling today I hope your day is as bright as your pretty smile today.
Dearest April, thank you - thank you - thank you! You are a gas. We run our 'fabric & yarn store' just like your personality! We always say if you can discuses a menopausal bowl movement here, you are in the right place. 'cause there is crap flyin' all the time. Just love you!
I love this!!! Thank you so much for watching!
I made my first quilt top with this pattern today. Thank you so much! You're the reason I decided I could start quilting.
Wonderful!
Thank you for this .. this made my day!

You can do it!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
April
I’ve just come across you by chance. How lovely to find someone who understands we don’t all have unlimited funds but still want to sew. I’ve just made my very first baby quilt and bought fat quarters for £5. I was feeling guilty that it’s not the best quality but equally I don’t have the skills to waste £22 on the better quality ones I saw today. Thank you for making us feel better that it’s ok to be creative on a budget. I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos.
Wow just found this lady! My kind of sewing.
I am so glad you found me. 😊. Thank you for watching.

I never paid any attention to the quilt snobs!!!! Used whatever I wanted and pleased myself (lol). I don't do "quilting exams" so I'm good to go. The recipients of my quilts were always happy and pleased to receive them........
You go girl! I love this!
That is great! I am so glad you were able to use one of my ideas to make a quilt for charity. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

I am a crocheter. My mum was a quilter and knitter. You have given me the perfect pattern to start quilting with. I will share when done.
Yay! I envy those with the patience to crochet. I tried it. A guy at work does it so he will pay attention during meetings. He tries to teach me. I just don’t have the hand eye coordination. And I want to use a machine. LOL. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I'm new to quilting and I have learned so much watching your videos. Biggest thing is you explain things so simply and I don't have anxiety when mistakes happen. Thank you.
Thanks for the compliment Renee... I am excited that you have picked up quilting ... you will be a pro before long ... it is so fun!

Time spent to sew the quilt, free; the look of the face of the recipient, free; for everything else there is MasterCard - One of the greatest commercial ideas ever. Oops, squirreled there. Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
Excellent! The local Walmart doesn’t have fabric. I wonder if the big one in Abbotsford does?
Don't you love how we, Canadians, pay so much more for the same things! I wish we had the same sales in Canada that Michael's or Joann's have in the US. 😥
I started quilting when I saw a trip around the world hanging in a window.no money..I used some clothing I had from family and started cutting squates...lol Took forever..2nd quilt bought shirts and full skirts at yard sales..cheaper..now I am 77 and make all out of scraps. Work awhile..take a break..love them.nice gifts in
So true about buying less expensive fabric. 🙂
So true!
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely brilliant…especially the chocolate

I 💗 your attitude about buying what YOU can afford. I'm "sew" 🧵 tired of quilt snobs.
I want quilting to be for everyone. And it should be for everyone. My grandmother didn’t make clothes for her children because she was wealthy. And quilting wasn’t started by those with means. We can all quilt and love it. Thank you for watching and commenting. 😀

Hey Renee.
How are you feeling today I hope your day is as bright as your pretty smile today.

Getting ready to do my very first quilt. I bought 5 packs of 5 fat quarters from hobby lobby $50 for 25 fat quarters. I also got a pack of light batting to do a queen-size quilt I figure I'll do batting on my Edging to make it a king-size quilt. I am going to follow your instructions because they are the plain and simple and I want to thank you very much
Yay
Hope the quilt turns out beautiful
I love this! Thanks so much for showing us how we can make a quilt with cheaper fabric. I’m a quilt novice, and the thought of messing up £s worth of fabric has put me off plenty of times. Such an easy pattern to follow too! You’re a star! ⭐️
Thank you so much ... I appreciate you watching my channel.
I love your attitude about craft supplies. Buy what you can afford. I am trying to work up the courage to make a quilt.
Hi
YOU CAN DO IT!
thank you for your comment ... let me know how it goes on your first quilt ... YOU CAN DO IT
April
April Story thank you for the encouragement. I am excited. I purchased a foot for my sewing machine that has a quarter inch seam guide. I think that will help set me up for success. Now, I am just waiting for the fabric to arrive.
I just discovered your channel and applaud you for speaking the truth. Not everyone can afford the expensive fabric and especially for beginners, they don’t feel like they will “ruin” something. I also like your snappy instructions.😊👍🏻
I am thrilled you found me. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I'm a fiber artist and use all kinds of different fabrics and other nontraditional materials in my work, so I agree don't pooh pooh Walmart. And love this little quilt. Great design for charity quilts to get done quickly and provide warmth to some. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your supportive comments. We are artists! I love it.

LOL
April
Would not the patterns on the HP FQs be disconnected by the vanishing FQ technique?
What? I have not seen these FQs... I now want them.

I picked up holiday print fat quarters at Walmart last year for 17 cents each. Time to thrift a sheet and get sewing!
Wow!!!! I am so jealous! 17¢

That is AWESOME!!!! You have made my day! You go girl! Thank you for watching and commenting.

LOVE IT!!! Finally someone that tells me like it's the REAL DEAL 💖
Absolutely - quilting shouldn't be a hobby that is out of reach. I just heard ALDI gets fabric sometimes - who knew! Thank you for watching. 😊

I love your chat. So real, well done
Thank you! 😊
I just love your energy and can’t wait to follow...unfortunately I waited until my children were grown and my career starting winding down before I took up quilting so I need to start from the very beginning...thankfully a very fast learner 🤗

I'm 51 and I just started as well.
I appreciate your comment on fabric from Walmart I have used their fabric for years and the quilts still looks beautiful
Yes they are! And there are sooooo many to choose from!

awesome!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching my channel!

You must be my kin folk, cause we think alike!!!! If not for Walmart I wouldn’t get to quilt. Love, love, love this quilt!!!
Thank you. You are so right - I didn't even think about that. I do Wal-mart fat quarters. I found some 3 Wishes fabric in fat quarters at Joanns. 😀. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I think I am going to try that with a fleece backing soon. :-). Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
I was thinking the same thing. Just use the flip method, and the quilt now only needs quilting. Just another method which I think might work well here since there are not a ton of edge seams. Thanks for the idea. The quilt turned out great. Really love the colors together.
@@lindapucillo3493 Thank you - it keeps me from having to bind when I am in a hurry. LOL
@@aprilscraftroom I have made a baby quilt, and want to back it with flannel or cuddle fabric. With these two backings, would you use batting between the layers like a typical quilt, or leave the batting out? Any advice is welcome.
@@lindapucillo3493 I have not done quilting yet know just for personal choice depends on where you live, the usual temperature/ environment and extent of use for blanket. Heavier for winter or colder climates. Lighter for longer use or warmer climates. I have lived in both with a little one. Hope some of this gives you ideas 💡 or helps in some manner. 😊

Thank you for not putting down the use of Wal-Mart fabric. I loved the presentation of how you make your 9 fat quarters into a quilt. Thank you!
I love Walmart fabric ❤️
This is how my grandmother and mother would make quilts. When they wanted smaller blocks they would continue doing steps 1 2 and 3 until the blocks where smaller. If they wanted the blocks to be triangular. They would cut the blocks diagonal. Then mix the patterns up and sew.
Aww.. That is awesome and the pattern is so easy ..triangles would be so cute with different colors too ...
Thank you for watching!
Wow! this is awesome. I've never made a quilt before, I was a little intimidated, but now I'm inspired . Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

I love love love that you’re a fan of Walmart fabric. I buy a ton of fabric there! I don’t have to wait for shipping, and you really can’t beat their prices. I love their fat quarter solids for things like mug rugs. I even bought a bolt of their solid red to use as the backing for some Advent calendars I made. $25 for 8 yards of fabric - can’t beat that!
