From a British perspective, let me tell you, you guys in America are BLESSED by God to even have the option of Walmart fabric! Our supermarkets here do not routinely sell cheapie fabric. Walmart has great selection of one yard cuts. They work great for three yard quilts if you’ve ever seen those patterns. I find myself going to different Walmart’s they all seem to have a slightly different selection. Not sure why
Walmart fabric quality has improved over the years. And I agree 100% with what she says about budgeting. I know poly cotton blend isn't the preferred fabric either, but the first quilt I made 40 years ago I used what I had. The 100% cotton has totally disintegrated but the poly cotton fabrics are still holding together and holding the color pretty well.
Great idea. After you fold it and before you cut it, I would iron it so those folds are nice and crisp. And another way to get inexpensive fabric is to shop the sales. A lot of quilt shops also have sale fabric. I understand about starting with inexpensive fabric, but it can also be more difficult when you put all the work in that quilt and that inexpensive fabric allows the batting to beard through or the s don’t hold. OH! And you gave me the idea for my first charity quilt. The Barbie quilt you did with the panel and Barbie fabrics cut into strips. I took a panel with a bear in the woods that was on clearance. Found 3 coordinating woodsy fabrics to cut into strips and sew around and around till it got big enough then instead of quilting it on my small machine I bought polyfill to make it fluffy and hand tied it. that was also a first and fun.
I never paid any attention to the quilt snobs!!!! Used whatever I wanted and pleased myself (lol). I don't do "quilting exams" so I'm good to go. The recipients of my quilts were always happy and pleased to receive them........
This is my first video of yours and I'm so excited about trying my first quit. You have no idea how fearful I have been about a sewing fancier fabric!! and I love this idea. Thank you! more beginner videos please.
This is a wonderful video for those exploring quilting. I wish I had seen it years ago when I started, so thank you for helping the newest quilters. I also will use cheaper fabrics for certain projects and for a first time making a new pattern. Nothing wrong with it. Save the expensive fabric for special projects ;) I was raised quilting recycled cloth from worn out clothing so any new fabric is a blessing ;)

Well, I'm gonna give this a try. I was at my cousins, and she asked if i wanted bags of fabric, and I told her no. I saw your video this morning and immediately called her back and told her I'd take her fabric when i heard you say $6.99 a yard at Walmart, lol.
I have been quilting for 40 years and I am a fan of Walmart fabric! Yes, joanns has a larger selection, but also more money and Walmart is closer to me...I go to joanns only if I have errands near it...
I did a similar one but actually no binding. I sandwiched my fabric and batting, then sewed around it an left a spot open to turn inside out. For “binding look” I sewed all around the edges. One close to the edge, the other about a 1/2 inch away. I then stitched in the ditch, for the quilting! Loved your idea for the nine patch!
I was thinking the same thing. Just use the flip method, and the quilt now only needs quilting. Just another method which I think might work well here since there are not a ton of edge seams. Thanks for the idea. The quilt turned out great. Really love the colors together.
@@aprilscraftroom I have made a baby quilt, and want to back it with flannel or cuddle fabric. With these two backings, would you use batting between the layers like a typical quilt, or leave the batting out? Any advice is welcome.

Love, love, love this idea, you clever lady - so cool!!! 5-pack FQ at Walmart here (western Canada 🇨🇦) is $14 + tax, and premium fabric at the quilt shops run $19/metre to $23/metre. I started out buying $10 scrap bags and made myself some really lovely blocks. Every quilt is made with a ton of love, even if one can’t afford to pay a ton of money. Huge difference in the value of a quilt, and the cost. 😊

I have no problem with Walmart fabric. I have just completed my first 3 yard quilt with it. I was putting it off so long because I was terrified of cutting. You made it look so easy! And if I screwed it up it wasn't $12.99 a yard. I'm on my second and two more in line. What fun it is! You learn as you go and I just might tackle the more expensive fabrics.
I just love your energy and can’t wait to follow...unfortunately I waited until my children were grown and my career starting winding down before I took up quilting so I need to start from the very beginning...thankfully a very fast learner 🤗

Thank you very much for sharing. I think it's the cutest and fastest quilt I've seen yet. As for Walmart fabrics, there's no shame in using it for quilting. I am on a fixed income and I can't afford the $14 a yard. Also, they have some very pretty fabrics. I'm definitely going to try this pattern out. What a sweet gift 🎁 it would make! Thanks again!

That is great! I am so glad you were able to use one of my ideas to make a quilt for charity. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

I never paid any attention to the quilt snobs!!!! Used whatever I wanted and pleased myself (lol). I don't do "quilting exams" so I'm good to go. The recipients of my quilts were always happy and pleased to receive them........
You go girl! I love this!
This is my first video of yours and I'm so excited about trying my first quit. You have no idea how fearful I have been about a sewing fancier fabric!! and I love this idea. Thank you! more beginner videos please.
AWESOME!
You can do this!
April
LOVE IT!!! Finally someone that tells me like it's the REAL DEAL 💖
Glad it was helpful!
This is my new favorite sewing channel!

Thank you!

Love your bloopers,🤣 With everything that’s happening, we need something to laugh about 😂
Thank you for making me laugh 😂 AND your tutorial of course.
Absolutely my pleasure on both counts. Thank you for watching and your kind comments.
April
Thank you for showing us what NOT to do and HOW TO FIX it if we do!
Your teaching style reminds me of Bill Alexander (Alexander Art).
You’re very welcome!
I'm new to quilting and I have learned so much watching your videos. Biggest thing is you explain things so simply and I don't have anxiety when mistakes happen. Thank you.
Thanks for the compliment Renee... I am excited that you have picked up quilting ... you will be a pro before long ... it is so fun!
thanks for watching

@@markcrayton8151 Hi Mike, the mat on my cutting table is from JoAnn's - purchased with a coupon. It is a big mat so it will be rolled up and in a box with more mats like it. The other ruler is from Amazon and there is an affiliate link in the description. And welcome to quilting - we're glad you joined us. 🙂April
Thank you for showing us how it can be done.
You are so welcome!

Walmart fabric is awesome!
Thanks for watching!

I think I am going to try that with a fleece backing soon. :-). Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
I was thinking the same thing. Just use the flip method, and the quilt now only needs quilting. Just another method which I think might work well here since there are not a ton of edge seams. Thanks for the idea. The quilt turned out great. Really love the colors together.
@@lindapucillo3493 Thank you - it keeps me from having to bind when I am in a hurry. LOL
@@aprilscraftroom I have made a baby quilt, and want to back it with flannel or cuddle fabric. With these two backings, would you use batting between the layers like a typical quilt, or leave the batting out? Any advice is welcome.
@@lindapucillo3493 I have not done quilting yet know just for personal choice depends on where you live, the usual temperature/ environment and extent of use for blanket. Heavier for winter or colder climates. Lighter for longer use or warmer climates. I have lived in both with a little one. Hope some of this gives you ideas 💡 or helps in some manner. 😊
I have shared your videos with so many friends who have become subscribers. We all love your work!
You are a sweetheart. Thank you for watching and sharing. 😀

Absolutely! Every quilt I make with love and that makes it priceless. Time spent to sew the quilt, free; the look of the face of the recipient, free; for everything else there is MasterCard - One of the greatest commercial ideas ever. Oops, squirreled there. Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
Excellent! The local Walmart doesn’t have fabric. I wonder if the big one in Abbotsford does?
Don't you love how we, Canadians, pay so much more for the same things! I wish we had the same sales in Canada that Michael's or Joann's have in the US. 😥
I started quilting when I saw a trip around the world hanging in a window.no money..I used some clothing I had from family and started cutting squates...lol Took forever..2nd quilt bought shirts and full skirts at yard sales..cheaper..now I am 77 and make all out of scraps. Work awhile..take a break..love them.nice gifts in
I did enjoy that. Thank you. God bless.
Thanks Dyana

I have no problem with Walmart fabric. I have just completed my first 3 yard quilt with it. I was putting it off so long because I was terrified of cutting. You made it look so easy! And if I screwed it up it wasn't $12.99 a yard. I'm on my second and two more in line. What fun it is! You learn as you go and I just might tackle the more expensive fabrics.
That is AWESOME!!!! You have made my day! You go girl! Thank you for watching and commenting.

I think this quilt have have been machine bound(?) In the three hours. Thanks for sharing!
I will add the binding using my machine - yes. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I just love your energy and can’t wait to follow...unfortunately I waited until my children were grown and my career starting winding down before I took up quilting so I need to start from the very beginning...thankfully a very fast learner 🤗
You got this!

I'm 51 and I just started as well.
I love your attitude about craft supplies. Buy what you can afford. I am trying to work up the courage to make a quilt.
Hi
YOU CAN DO IT!
thank you for your comment ... let me know how it goes on your first quilt ... YOU CAN DO IT

April Story thank you for the encouragement. I am excited. I purchased a foot for my sewing machine that has a quarter inch seam guide. I think that will help set me up for success. Now, I am just waiting for the fabric to arrive.
I just discovered your channel and applaud you for speaking the truth. Not everyone can afford the expensive fabric and especially for beginners, they don’t feel like they will “ruin” something. I also like your snappy instructions.😊👍🏻
I am thrilled you found me. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Thank you for showing an easy way to make your first quilt. 🥰🌹

Walmart fat quarter bundles from Christmas are marked down to $1.61 and under! I grabbed several to make my kids these quilts I’m so excited. Love your channel!!
Thank you for letting me know... guess I am going to WALMART!!!

I watched this almost two years ago, before I subscribed. ( sorry it took me so long, I love watching you and Dia) I kept wondering why it didn't look like yours. Today after re watching, I realized I sewed the fat quarters the wrong way. 🤣😂It still came out nice and my sweet bestie loves it. 🥰🤩😍

I try to recycle fabric as much as possible because I enjoy the challenge of matching and then joy me too of seeing familiar fabric in a new light! Nothing wrong with Walmart/Aldi/whatever, not everybody can afford the expensive lines but shouldn’t be prevented from having a great hobby!
Absolutely - quilting shouldn't be a hobby that is out of reach. I just heard ALDI gets fabric sometimes - who knew! Thank you for watching. 😊

What an awesome idea for a baby quilt!

Thank you for not putting down the use of Wal-Mart fabric. I loved the presentation of how you make your 9 fat quarters into a quilt. Thank you!
I love Walmart fabric ❤️
I love this! Thanks so much for showing us how we can make a quilt with cheaper fabric. I’m a quilt novice, and the thought of messing up £s worth of fabric has put me off plenty of times. Such an easy pattern to follow too! You’re a star! ⭐️
Thank you so much ... I appreciate you watching my channel.

Hello. I'm working in my sewing room today and just happen to type in "quilt" for something to keep me company. This video popped up. Oh my Goodness! I was hooked within the first 10 seconds!! Great video!

Totally love this! I have a new grandson on the way late December beginning January

What a great idea!! I've been picking up the Harry Potter FQ bundles (at Walmart} and now I know just what pattern to use. Thank you so much. Yes, Walmart does have decent fabrics. I'm not a fabric snob....
I have purchased those same fat quarters and you now what - I am going to use them for the same for my daughter. I am not a fabric snob either. I am a paper snob. LOL
April
Would not the patterns on the HP FQs be disconnected by the vanishing FQ technique?
What? I have not seen these FQs... I now want them.
I came to TH-cam to find a quilt pattern to use the Harry Potter bundles I got from Walmart. I have never made a quilt, but I do sew. I am going to figure out how many squares I need to make a full size or queen quilt.
@@sherrlon this will be a great pattern to start with. I would think maybe 15 fat quarters. And cut into the four squares and then maybe cut those four into four. And of course sew them back together. You will have to share how you do it. :-)

I came upon your channell by accident and love it so I subscribed.
I love your idea I have some children who want quilts this is perfect I can get 6 done by Christmas
YES you can!

You're welcome. This pattern is great for themed quilts. There are a couple fabric stores within a couple hours of me that have fabric at $4 and $5 a yard. I love going there, but there are several Wal-marts near by that are much more convenient. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Karen, Wal Mart’s Waverly material is actually really nice quality! Like you said, no shame in using Wal Mart material, everyone is on a different budget! Happy sewing 😍
I love watching you tutorials, full of humor and joy! And it gives me permission to eat chocolate. Keep doing what you do, I’m watching! 😊
Thank you so much
Wow! this is awesome. I've never made a quilt before, I was a little intimidated, but now I'm inspired . Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
You can do it!

I love your chat. So real, well done
Thank you! 😊
This is a great quilt idea. Thank you for sharing. I buy both Wal-Mart and quilt shop fabric for quilting. It depends on what I am making, who it is for, and color/fabric patterns that I want. I love your videos so much and look forward to them.
You are very sweet. By the way I am working on your quilt today. 😀. Same for me. Wal-mart has some of the most adorable prints.

I live on east coast....when traveling West fall of 2020 i stopped at a Walmart (in ??) and found the most wonderful array of fabrics! the state i had left had no fabric at all....the shelves were bare! (from making masks they said). i have been very happy with WM fabric i buy.
I am going to Orlando and I plan on checking out the Walmart’s there. Wish me luck. And thank you for watching.

Hi there! This video just popped up in my feed today, I watched, and I thoroughly enjoyed!! My very first quilt was a traditional log cabin and I bought my fabric at JoAnn's. That was over 20 years ago and that quilt is still in great shape. Since then, I've learned the difference in fabric quality BUT, hey, you buy what you can and what you want! I totally agree with you!! I'll be watching more videos; I love to learn new things!!
Thank you. I am so glad you found me. I use Joann's fabric all the time. You can almost tell my feel whether a fabric is good. :-). Thank you for watching.

@@skylark5789 Sometimes the more expensive fabric doesn't feel any better than the less expensive fabric - I agree. Someone commented that Walmart fabric has a lot of sizing in it which might make it feel like a more expensive fabric. Either way - if I like it - I know i will use it no matter how inexpensive the fabric was. :-)
I saw this video yesterday, and today I've made 2 quilt tops, they are a little wonky in places but I love them thanks very much I love this

Hey Miriam.
How are you feeling today I hope your day is as bright as your pretty smile today.
I’ve just come across you by chance. How lovely to find someone who understands we don’t all have unlimited funds but still want to sew. I’ve just made my very first baby quilt and bought fat quarters for £5. I was feeling guilty that it’s not the best quality but equally I don’t have the skills to waste £22 on the better quality ones I saw today. Thank you for making us feel better that it’s ok to be creative on a budget. I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos.
April. I love it. I am trying to decide on two baby quilts with different animal prints. This is a great idea for me to use thank you. You always put a bright spot in my day. Love you.
You are very sweet. This would be perfect for a baby quilt - put some flannel or soft fabric on the back. I hope you send me a picture of it. :-). Thank you for watching.

Love this! I just bought 10 Tula Pink fat quarters and I can't wait to use them! That being said, I don't usually spend a lot on my fabric. But for Tula, I made an exception
Tula is the exception is so many ways. And this pattern would be perfect for her fabric because it show off the full pattern. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I’m loving your bright fabrics and the BIG disappearing 9 patch pattern!

So true about buying less expensive fabric. I've been Quilting for over 30 yrs and would never sugest some one pay the crazy prices to make their first quilt. I still don't. There are plenty of places to get discounted top quality fabrics especially on line. Great video and great advice along with it. Very nice quilt for beginners. I would do a little more Quilting to hold those big pieces together though. But whatever floats your boat as they say. Thanks for the tutorial. 🙂
So true!
Awesome idea! Thanks! I will probably use this for a quick gift idea for all my nieces & nephews for Christmas.💖
I was astonished at how quickly I could make these quilts. I think it is the perfect pattern for a newbie and for a quick quilt for those more experienced quilters. Thank you for watching and commenting.
