    I love the KVM functionality of this machine and I have one PC connected by USB-C and two via HDMI all of which switch easily. But I’ve had three of these monitors all of which exhibit bad back light bleed and they are very fragile with the screen so easy to damage. So I use it but it’s limited in a number of ways.

    A real world review, focused on the benefits of such a screen for a home/office worker, rather than a gamer or creator. It has convinced me to go this way. Thank you Michael. One question - you look to be sitting about as close as I would be to my laptop screen (around an arm's length away). I presume you find that a comfortable distance on the eyes, even for such a large screen?

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you! A good rule-of-thumb is that a display should be about an arm's length away (at least 20 inches). The bigger the display the further away you can get. I personally use the U38 Curved an arm length + 6inches away. You should also adjust the monitor height so that the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level.

    Great video Michael, I liked it so much that it was the main reason I purchased the Dell C3422WE and I love it. The only disappointing thing was that there was no documentation on how to download, setup and use the Dell Display Manager. Can you create a video on how you create those shortcuts with the application and other tips and trick? Also, it would have been nice for the monitor to support Bluetooth. In other words, I have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and I could not sync them to the monitor directly, so I had to buy another keyboard/mouse combo with a USB wireless receiver.

    Wow, amazing. I didn't know a monitor exists that can display content from 2 separate laptop computers at the same time, that's super slick! Currently my setup is using a Philips 27" 4K monitor whereby I'm using a separate laptop for work and another laptop for personal. I use an HDMI switcher device (Insignia brand from Best Buy) with 3 HDMI ports whereby I need to press the button on the switcher (not splitter) to toggle between HDMI port 1 for my work laptop and port 2 for my personal. There is usually a few long seconds of delay before the next laptop shows up on the monitor when switching between different ports. I also use the Logitech MX Keys keyboard that has Bluetooth pairing for 3 different devices, so that means I need to press a button for the keyboard to pair with my work computer, or press a different button to pair with my personal computer. But it appears the Dell monitor can show content from 2 separate laptops, plus can pair the same keyboard for the 2 separate laptops. That's just too cool!! My only slight concern is this curved design, which I've never had a curved monitor before. But I've been reading that many users quickly adapt to the curved design with no problem.

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Casey. Thank you! You will like curved monitors. It is on like curved TV's. Curved monitor are more ergonomic. As you look left-to-right on the curved display your eyes don't have to refocus as much (less eye strain) compared to having traditional dual displays. Also, Dell Display Manager makes it very easy (an quick) to carve your display in to multiple display windows. I have been using a the Dell U38 for a year now and I will never go back to a traditional display.

      @@MichaelOHanian Hi Michael. That's great! Does the Dell U38 monitor you are using now offer that ability to show content from 2 different computers? Hi MIchael. After this review I went ahead and purchased one of these monitors. I'm trying to setup the PIP view the same way what you have done at 6:58sec into your video but I can't seem to figure out the scaling. When switching to PIP using the Display Manager, both inputs are showing up on the screen in 21:9 aspect ratio instead of full screen. Is there any additional setting that I need to adjust in order to stretch both inputs to 4:3 the way had it done automatically? I'd appreciate your comment. thanks!

    Just found your video as I'm researching how to clean up my home office space. I have been a power user at work with 3 x 24" monitors, but recently downsized to 2 monitors. I've seen the new 34" with the USB-C and was wondering if I could connect a home computer as well as my work laptop. I just kept saying "this is what I want!" I also appreciate the tips on Dell Display Monitor as having the monitor act as 2 screens, having both computer & laptop up simultaneously, and the other tips is perfect.
    My only question is that I do alot of MS Teams meetings throughout the day. If you separate the screen into the 2 sections, and you were to share a screen on MS Teams, does it share the entire monitor or does it recognize the 2 different windows? Others who have the wide monitor haven't done anything and it shares the entire screen and creates a smaller image in the MS Teams display (and the only thing keeping me thinking of doing 2 x 27" Dell monitors).
    Do you have any thoughts on that, or have you tested it?
    Otherwise, great and informative video. Thanks Michael!

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. If you use Dell Display Manager to carve you display into two displays, MS Teams will still try to take over the full display. You can force it into one side but when you first launch it will want to take the full display. That being said, some of our new displays have a technology call MSTi (not to be confused with MST). MSTi allows you to carve up your display and the operating system is fooled into thinking it is multiple displays. In this case MS Team would behave and stay on it own display. The U4324QE 43" 4K display has this technology.

    By chance can you slide documents over from the split screen view and move your spreadsheet file to the home computer by just dragging it with the mouse? I am looking for a product to eliminate all the monitors and the stands and wiring for a clean functional look. I am able to now work from home and I've got 3 monitors at work. Also what is the minimum OS for this technology. Thanks

      It depends if your system had enough horse power to push this resolution. You will find that some systems will adapt to the resolutions by lowering the refresh rate (usually will drop to ~30hz).

      These two monitors are very similar. You get a few more ports on U3419W, thinner bezel, physical color and the placement of the USB on side of the display. We have a new U3421WE that you might want to look at. It is a true HUB display.

    So amazing!!! I have a quesion: if I connect 2 laptops (A & B) to Dell, and split Dell as 2 screens (1 use as extend monitor for laptop A, another 1 use as duplicate monitor for laptop B) and can use 2 screens at the same time?

      Thank you! You can extend (or duplicate) the notebook screens to the U34.You doing that while creating a PnP on the U34 (Splitting the U34 display). This is a hard split; meaning your computers think they are the only computer using the monitor. You cannot simply drag our mouse from one system to the other. You will need to jump from one system to the other via OSD or using Dell Display Manager.

The "E" at the end of the model name stands for Ethernet. Or what we like to call "Hub Displays". Have two the U2720Q's 27" 4K that I just got in. Should have a video up in a few days.

Makes for a far more comfortable home/work environment. The ethernet will be a real bonus if and when back in an office as it also means I no longer need a docking station.

      Hi Jakup,
      The USB-C connection to the monitor has USB upstream, which means the USB downstream ports on the monitor act as if they are part of the PC/Mac. On the desktop I connected there is a USB upstream port on the monitor. I hooked it to the desktop to extend the USB downstream ports to it. I know that my sound confusing, but it is simple to setup . Let me know if you need any further clarification.

    Hi Michael, this is a excellent video. For a noob like me, who was pushed into the home office, it is tricky to overview all those technical constraints.
    What exactly is this USB-C cable about? - Isn't this Thunderbolt when the video signal is in this USB-C cable?
    I have a HP Zbook 15 G5 laptop from work, and this has a Thunderbolt 3 output. Now I am wondering whether I have to go via a port replicator and from there into the Dell monitor, e.g. via HDMI? -- Or would this monitor work directly from my Thunderbolt output?
    My private PC will use the single DP1.2 port already.
    Thanks for shedding some light.

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Marcus. USB-C and Thunderbolt share the same type-C connector. It can be confusing. Good news, Thunderbolt can speak the same language as USB-C. You can use your Thunderbolt in the USB-C port.

    Excellent video. I have a question. Like you I have a home PC and a work laptop. I am not allowed to install software on my work laptop. Does the Dell display manager need to be installed on both or can it be installed on only my home PC in order to view both?

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @kiwijana Thank you! Great question. Not sure if I now the answer. Dell Display Manager works at the PC level. You don't need DDM to hook both PC's to the Display, but you do need DDM to jump back and forth (live). If you wanted PnP , you could set it up on your home PC but you could not jump back from your work once you are there. Let me play around with my systems this weekend and I will let you know if I can find a solution. One thought is using a multi device mouse and keyboard. In this video th-cam.com/video/2uRn7n-kW2k/w-d-xo.html I demonstrated hooking two PC's to the Dell U4320Q. This display does not have built in KVM so I used the Dell Multi Device Mouse and keyboard to control each PC. But I am not certain that will work for you either.

    Very good explanatory video! I want to use the P3421W monitor to connect my home PC as well as my office PC. My office PC would be connected via USB C and my home PC would then be connected via DisplayPort. To use the KVM function (to have only one keyboard /mouse and switch between the 2 PCs everything that is connected by USB to the monitor) I must also connect the USB uplink to the home PC? Is my understanding correct?
    I am unable to install DDM on the office PC. I can then switch between the 2 PCs via the OSD of the screen? Is it direct or does it take several "clicks" - how much less easy than with DDM?

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! You are correcting in all your assumptions. It does take a couple of clicks on the OSD to switch systems. DDM makes the process a lot easier. Here is a link to the Users Guide for the P3421W; page 60 talks about KVM. downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics_accessories/esuprt_electronics_accessories_monitors/dell-p3421w-monitor_user%27s-guide_en-us.pdf

    Hi Michael, thanks for your great videos. For the KVM connectivity, if I have 1 PC and 1 Mac that's connected through HDMI and DisplayPort, respectively, can you still use that mouse/keybaord sharing feature? Wouldn't you need two USB-B upstreams? Or, I guess KVM only works when one of the devicse is connected with ThunderBolt 3?

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelOHanian Thanks for the reply. In the package I did find a USB-B to USB-A cable which I used to connect my PC (USB-A) to the monitor (USB-B). However, to use the KVM feature, for my Mac, I also need to connect something that supports data upstream to the monitor, right? Neither my PC nor my Mac has USB Type-C ports so I am not sure what port I can use for Mac. Does that mean KVM won't be available in this case?

      Mac's can be tricky. You should be able to have a Mac and a PC. If both are notebooks, one will have to run a USB cable, in addition to a DisplayPort/HDMI cable to the monitor. I just published a video yesterday where I explain how to hook two PC's to the a Hub display. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/Dh5nNickH2I/w-d-xo.html .
