Thank you! I have a lot of fun playing with all this technology. I try to make my videos more about what you can do with the technology and less about speeds & feeds. When I get a new system in, I ask myself a few questions. How does that___ work? Can do you ___ with it? Who would benefit from this and why. What are the pitfalls?

Great review Michael and very indepth on the KVM functionality. I am currently working on a 27inch screen in 1920x1080 resolution. Going to go wide screen next year and my two options are the screen that you reviewed and the Dell U3824DW. Main use will be productivity tasks (spreadsheets, word, browsing, text editing,...) on Windows PC. So i have two questions i would like to ask. Firstly how is the text size when working in 5K2K resolution, does it need scaling or would the 38" with lower resolution work beter ? Second question is when this screen will be updated with HDMI 2.1 so that you can also use full resolution and refresh rate over HDMI ? Specs of the 40 inch are getting outdated compared to the 38 inch version.

Thanks for making this excellent video. I’m considering buying either this Dell monitor or the Lenovo P40w, which seems to have three advantages: uses Thunderbolt 4 (TB4), has a downstream TB4 port for daisy chaining TB4 devices, and slightly higher 75 Hz refresh rate too. Do you think Dell might update this model with one that competes with those features on the Lenovo one?

You mentioned that the hub/ports built into the monitor largely replaces the need for a dock like the WD19TBS, but can the monitor also replace the power button on the WD19TBS? The most attractive feature of that dock is the ability for me to power a laptop on and off with the button on the dock; can the monitor do the same, or will I still need the dock?

I really wish Dell would refresh this monitor with more modern specs. Keep the same LG panel, but: 1) Upgrade the HDMI port to 2.1, so you can drive the panel at native resolution at 60Hz. 2) Update to Thunderbolt 4 3) Update the USB-B downstream port to TB4 4) Upgrade the NIC to 2.5Gbps.

I know this is 2 years after your review, you might not be reading comments anymore :D But just in case you do and have access to this monitor, or remember how it worked : I am considering setting it with a graphics card which only has two output HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.2 (* well ok it's a shortcut, in fact that's a KVM), such that I would use picture-by-picture : one half of the screen would be from one input, 2560x2160 at 60Hz and the other from the other input, same mode. HDMI does not support 5K2K at 60Hz , but I guess it should support that resolution ? do you think that would work ?

Are you trying to attach two PC's to the display? If you are just wanting to hook one PC but carve up the display into two displays, I would recommend loading up Dell Display Manager. It is free with your monitor and you can carve up your displays just about any way you want.

What I want is to split the single screen into two (extend btw two monitors minus the bezels with the same source mac). Idk if the 34 will do that for me. Because when I watched a couple of all of the screen when split do not fill up the screen. I need help. Could you please help me.

I are just looking to carve up the display with a single PC? If so, Dell Display Manager supports the S3432DWC and allows you to cave up the display. www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000060112/what-is-dell-display-manager Another option, if you have a system with an NVIDIA RTX card in it, you can use NVIDIA Broadcast. DDM is free with the Dell Monitor (not need a Dell PC, even supports MAC). Broadcast is also free with your supported card.

Questions on the monitor hub concept and this monitors with the latest Macbook Pro M1 (MBP), which has apple silicon chip, not an intel chip.
Example: Macbook Pro, with new M1pro apple silicon chip, connecting to monitor from its usb-c thunderbolt 4 port, cable connects to the monitor port 7, DISPLAY PORT, thunderbolt 3 port. The monitor manual says DP 1.4 support the maximum resolution of 5120 x 2160 at 60 Hz PD 20 V/4.5 A, 15 V/3 A, 9 V/3 A, 5 V/3 A. NOTE: USB Type-C is not supported on Windows versions that are prior to windows 10.
Does the monitor usb-c support the latest mac operating system?
That one cable to connect the laptop to monitor has a lot of functions, in what situations does this single cable become a limiting factor for performance? Functions: 1, transfer Ethernet plugged into the monitor to the computer, 2, when playing a very high quality video on the laptop from streaming source (youtube, Netflix) both transfer the Ethernet signal data down to the laptop and at the same time, send up the streamed video signal to the monitor, as well as charging the computer, all 3 things going at the same time.
With thunderbolt 4 on the mac side, and thunderbolt 3 on the monitor side, can all these functions happen at the same time through the one cable and those ports, without limiting performance, assuming one does not go past max supported resolution of 5120 x 2160 at 60 Hz? Note, manual says native monitor resolution is WUHD 5120 x 2160 (DisplayPort: 60 Hz, HDMI: 30 Hz) so would not want to run video separately through a HDMI port to free up bandwidth, IF that using that one cable approach for all those functions comes with limits.
Can you comment on the limits of this 1 cable approach? I was wondering if performance would be better if Ethernet is put straight into the MBP laptop?
I did just find this so dell display manager is now supported for my MBP with this display.
    www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-ca/000191819/dell-display-manager-software-for-mac?lang=en
Will I be able to connect my other dell ultrafine 27” monitor into this setup so I can run both monitors with KMV? It’s a u2717D.
    Thank you.

    1. Where you able to use 60Hz with the Precision 5550? (I'm on the 5540 and read that it will only work at 30Hz)

@@MichaelOHaniandell u3818dw, what I'm asking is do the DVD burner (dell 429-auxx) require power? Are only the ports with the battery icon next to them on the dell u3818dw powered or are all the usb 3.0 ports powered? And can I use a simple hub connected to one of my u3818dw's usb 3.0 ports to get more connectivity? The u3818dw has a built in hub, it connects to my xps with just a single usb c, I could just plug more stuff into my laptop's ports but I want just the one cable going to it.. Also I have a seagate desktop expansion hard drive (micro b to usb 3.0) I also want to connect that to my u3818dw's downports, it has it's own dedicated power supply. Thanks, I know it's a messed up question but that's because I know absolutely nothing about computers. 😅 thanks again any help is greatly appreciated!

@scottbogfoot I don't thank that will work without supplying more power to the DVD burner. the USB downstream ports on the U3818DW are Super Speed at 4.5Watts power delivery. You might want to look at the U3219Q. Not a curved display, nor does it have RJ-45. However, it is 4K with HDR400. It also support KVM, PnP/PbP, and has 90W of charging to the notebook. Bought this monitor back in April last year. Turned it on Thursday Morning last, and lines vertically on left hand side and all along the bottom. Opened up a ticket , tech support asked for pictures and then came back within 24 hours saying I’d physically damaged the monitor! Spent two hours on the phone with them today , asked for an engineer to call out , they said they don’t repair monitors, said I’d pay for the engineer call to prove the monitor was in perfect condition with no physical damage they said no. I asked how do I resolve it , they said go to a repair shop ! They then sent me an email saying to contact Dell sales to purchase a new monitor, after the current one which cost me over €2000 didn’t last 12 months! Scandalous service, I now have to go to the consumer protection agency and possibly legal.

I find most widescreen monitors to be too short to be able to work on a full word processor letter-size page while also having some room below the document window for desktop icons (I need to be able to access folder icons without minimizing active windows). I bought this monitor after watching this video. I love the hardware, but I wish Dell put more effort in polishing DDM:
    - Properly and completely document all DDM command line options and put it in usual OS help menu (currently incomplete readme.txt only available to Windows installs)
    - macOS: Rename to "Dell Display Manager.app" and put it in /Applications, without a subfolder (put config/logs in macOS usual places), do not include DDM binary twice (it's OK to instruct power users to reference the binary for command line instructions from "/Applications/Dell\ Display\ Manager.app/Contents/MacOS/DDM"
    - Windows: Support HiDPI for the application, it's really not doing any justice to the monitor atm
    - PxP switching for the masses: switching to and from PxP should be a configurable keyboard shortcut. The commands are there, just add the option in the app...

Make sure you adjust the scaling to your preference. When you start going to higher resolution displays (and bigger displays) it is very useful to have a graphics card in the system. I have found that if you just have integrated graphics the refresh rate will drop to 30hz to be able to support the monitor.

I just bought this monitor and can't wait to use it. How do I control two desktops connected to U4021QW with the KM7321W keyboard/mouse combo? Does the latest Dell Display manager support switching between two PCs without pressing the selection key? like the Microsoft Garage Mouse without Borders software. Thanks

Thank you for choosing Dell! You are going to love this display. There are a few ways to jump back and forth between the PC's. You can use the multi-function of the KM7321W, use the OSD controls on the display, or use Dell Display Manager. Here is a good TH-cam video on DDM th-cam.com/video/cqSQO92wCXA/w-d-xo.html

Great monitor - thanks for the vid. Have to say though - for a tech professional this vid's audio is abysmal - really sensitive to the way you turned your head. Def need better mic/audio next time. Surprising!

I agree. Started making these videos just for fun..well...COVID lockdown and was looking for things to do. Never thought anyone would watch these videos. My new video are being shot with a 4k camera and I am using Blue microphone. Much better quality than my Pixel phone :-).

50% of what I do is edit scaned 120 film that was shot in 6x6, 6x7 & 6x9 aspect ratios. It would be wonderful if someone made a 1X1 aspect ratio HQ 4k monitor to view the 6x6 images.

Hi Mike, will Dell release a new/updated version of the U40 anytime soon? Thanks for all your review!!

There is a planned refresh but it will be some time before this happens. Take a look at our new IPS Black displays. I just moved from two U2723QE (4K IPS Black) to the U4021QW. I can say the IPS Black has a much better image. Today we have a 49" curved in the IPS Black, U4924DW, and 32" 4K U3223QE/QZ. We will also be bringing out a 32" 6K IPS Black display soon.

Will the updated DDM (December release) allow you to free-form mouse float input to input while in PBP mode, without a keyboard command?

Todd, that is a planned feature for the next release. Keep in mind that everything is tentative and subject to change.

Will this charge the new XPS 9510 models? I see it supports 90 watts of charging over TB3, but the XPS 9510s have a 130 watt brick.

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

It can, but it will slow charge it. It is safe to do this however if you push the max performance out of the XPS for too long you will not be able to charge the battery as fast as you consume it. It would be rare to do this.

Is it true that even at this monitor size the PiP only splits the screen into two down the middle? That essentially creates a non-ergonomic situation where I would be always looking to the right or left, never neutral straight forward. I would love to have either three “screens” or one on the side so I can easily use “full screen” apps, windows, zoom sharing etc. Thanks

There is PbP (Picture by Picture) that splits the screen in two and PnP (Picture in Picture) where you size and place the screen that will live inside the main screen. If you are just wanting to carve up the display with a single PC source Dell Display Manage is extremely useful. www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=cx7tc
