Ah, wise words, as ever. I would add: 'Don't take it all so seriously'. It's not a competition, or an exam, or a matter of death and undeath. Have fun with what you do. There are indeed great things lurking in the third wave. That being said: professor, did you quote a bon mot from that near forgotten fin-de-siècle philosopher Lady Miss Kier ("depending on how you see a thing..."). I think I saw a twinkle in Cedric's eye socket when you said that. Best wishes.

Samuel- He indeed twinkled!-- That is an excellent 'add' don't take it so seriously. A lesson even I had to learn. "That being said: professor, did you quote a bon mot from that near forgotten fin-de-siècle philosopher Lady Miss Kier ("depending on how you see a thing...")." Samuel 10 points to Griffen-Goth you nailed it!!! That was from her!! Delightttttttttttttful.

Great video. Even gave us homework! Growing up in Australia in the 90s we had a TV program 'Rage'. Would start from about midnight and have bands as guest dj. We would all wait to see who was hosting and get our VCRs read to record music videos we had never seen before. The fun of 'discovering' new music before we had internet.

That is so cool to read. It's like your Rage show was like the American 120 minutes we had on MTV. I would record 2 hours of it. Still have vhs 📼 tapes in storage from 1988!

Great info, looking forward to the branches video. In relation to the different branches, I wanted to add this advice for my fellow baby bats: Don't let anyone tell you only their specific branch of the goth subculture is the "real" one. I've noticed this as a pretty big problem online as I've been looking into the gothic subculture as a whole, specifically on reddit. A quick example was some users saying that The Cure wasn't goth because not every single one of their songs fit their definition of "goth". Like Professor M says here, there's many branches on the goth family tree, explore them and see which one or ones call to you. I myself find Im more partial to Gothic Metal music wise with my fashion preference being Corporate and Victorian Goth, but if you're, for example, a cyber goth or dress in more Gothic punk style clothes and listen to different subsets of goth music, thats just as valid and don't let someone who sees their branch as the whole tree tell you otherwise. Thanks again for the video Professor. 🦇

I love this advice Professor M. I wanted to add for all the Goths, (myself included), not only be true to thyself, but importantly, love thyself and be kind to thyself. ❤😊
Definitely we are on the receiving end of negative comments from other people. I've been told to simply don't draw attention to myself even though I have just a simple age-appropriate Goth style.
I'm not sure if you touched upon this or not, Professor M, but also be prepared to get a lot of inappropriate lewd comments from total strangers when out in public. It happened to me and an acquaintance of mine recently.
As some Goths might on a whim, my acquaintance, her boyfriend and I decided to go check out a new dance nightclub that opened recently.
So, we're all Gothed-up (as in 'all dolled up' although that expression is likely outdated nowadays).
And no more had we found seating in the incredibly small dance nightclub, that several rowdy, soused patrons gave us some lewd comments and we just left after having just been there for five minutes. We left also because the music was extremely loud and none of us drink.
Funniest moment though is when I was about to pick up my acquaintance and her boyfriend, (I was approaching the nightclub on foot), when a small gathering out front said in my direction, "She looks the part, she definitely dresses the part and she's got the walk. She's definitely Goth!" When another person piped up and said, "Shhh, she'll hear us!"
And rightly I had heard every word and watched them scurry into the club like a flash.
After our awkward encounter in the nightclub, my acquaintance and her boyfriend and I had a brilliant idea that our town definitely needs a safe venue for Goths of all ages to hang out in.
The Bowling alley isn't in a safe part of town and tends to attract a lot of seedy clientele. The only coffee shop that we have closes in the evening and that's usually the time we do go hang out when our busy schedules permit of course. 🦇
Also, Professor M you mentioned books, music, and movies to get absorbed in within the Goth subculture. I wanted to add that in my baby bat days I loved Count Chocula cereal, it's made by General Mills and has been around since the 70's. Whenever I couldn't find that I would buy Cookie Crisp cereal, the mini-Chocolate chip cookie cereal. Sometimes Wal-Mart will have Count Chocula around Halloween, but it's difficult to find other times. There's also Frankenberry and Booberry. Frankenberry is strawberry flavored. Booberry is blueberry flavored and were my least favorite cereals growing up. I always went for Count Chocula. 🧛‍♂️😊
As always I enjoyed your video. Excellent advice. 😊
And yep, as an elder Goth I do my best to educate the baby bats. I love to tell them exactly what the first Hot Topic fishnet tops were like for me, very unbearable! Mine, even with repeated laundering, were scratchy, non-stretchy, and ran small. Lip Service runs small, tripp clothing you'll need to buy a next size up as so in my case anyway. And our makeup choices were limited back then. 😊

Thank you, dear Professor M. I think your tips are important inside and outside the goth culture as, for example, knowing and respecting your ancestors is important for your own future family.
I have a question: is that okay if I feel I'm not quite a Goth but I'm drifting on some orbit around this culture? I cannot say I'm in but I love some elements of the gothic culture (mostly literature and visual aesthetic), and it makes me feel confused.
P.s. I love watching your videos and I'd like to say you're elegant and wonderful person. 🖤

2062945 ~ Absolutely. I will touch on a few things 1) respecting your ancestors - agreed. Yes, that is important for our own families. And your question 2) is that okay if I feel I'm not quite a Goth? Yes! Of course. You need not feel confused. What you are feeling of 'curiosity' mixed with' lack of commitment'. Its possible a lukewarm feel- but here, I will help you on this one. One need not be a full fledge "Goth" to enjoy the subculture. You are free to enjoy any elements for example you mentioned Literature. I have a wonderful literature-loving friend she is somewhere between Goth-and-Not really a Goth. She love Vampire novels. And I accept her, for her love of elements of the gothic culture and visual aesthetics. You are very welcome to my channel. IF you ever have a question- ask- I will answer it either it be Goth Culture related or what's your favorite ice cream? I'll answer. Welcome to the channel, sit, watch, explore.🎩

It's been a while since the comment so I'd like to thank you now. Recently - just after this video - I'm experimenting on my emploi, and suddenly I've found out the 1910s-1950s images (not even fashion but role models, learning culture of that age etc...) fit perfectly for me, and with this experiment everything changes in a better way. It even helps to overcome some of psychological barriers so your advices (like the "dress age appropriate", "be yourself") worked exactly like a therapy. I'm 31 y.o., and only now I feel myself as intended - as a beautiful woman.

At one point there was 2 females and then there was 3, but it turns out the third was actually a prepubescent male (didn’t have antlers yet). So needless to say there are 5 deer now. Badassgaybitch ~ Hi! Do not in any way feel bad for buying your first or anything Goth from Amazon, we all do. Feel absolutely free to shop Amazon for Goth stuffs! My message will close with what I was saying in the video-- But first know you're in a very special age, and I see where things are limited are out-of-reach. Just remember I was 13 years old once too, and understand that completely. 🖤 I read your message carefully. I will reply with a special message from me to you: 1) First, I have a good Goth sister in USA, who is also handicap, and physically is a limited in movement; and she does a lot of shopping for everything Goth online. 2) As a young person, follow the rules of your parents/guardians, and I promise you, as you get older, you will be able to do all kinds of advanced things that you wish in the future. ( I know it seems like so far off- and a long way away, but it will come) 3) My message was for us to hold on to the D.I.Y of Goth. We invented and made a lot of stuffs when I was in high school back in the 80s. Today, its easy to get pre-made Goth garments. Its not what you buy online that matters, but how 'you make that fashion your own'. You asked a good question. I was in Germany in 2002, and welcome to the channel!🎩

@badassgaybitch, 👋 hello. Never feel bad about shopping on Amazon for Goth clothing, and yes, as Professor M mentioned always mind your parents. At 13 I didn't get the choice of buying my own clothes as that was my parents that selected clothing for me. It wasn't until I was around fifteen, about sixteen is when they let me start getting my own wardrobe. I love to shop thrift stores (always have for clothing). I understand that doing so in your situation is difficult.
As you get older, you'll have more freedom and choices for clothing. My first set of Goth clothes consisted of just two thrifted burgundy velvet, and one black velvet short sleeve top, one pair of black shorts for summer, one pair of Doc Martins (made in England), one dark eggplant purple long-sleeved tunic and one stretch velvet black tunic. As my time and budget allowed I was able to build a small Goth wardrobe. Nowadays, I actually have less Goth clothing than I started out with. It seems I have more coats and pairs of black shoes Nowadays. 😅
It'll take a while to buy the clothing, especially if you love a certain Goth style. For myself, I was around the Goth subculture when everything was going into the "Industrial Goth era". However, I always preferred a basic everyday Goth ensemble that wasn't complex (nor expensive). Hope this helps. I hear that Depop is kind of like an online thrift store to find vintage 90's/ Y2K (2000's) Goth clothing. If your parents allow you to shop there, that might be another option. Since I don't know much about Depop prices, maybe other Goths can chime in if they are less expensive than Amazon, for example. 😊🦇 Welcome to the Goth subculture! 🦇❤
