    Whenever disney decides to make another trilogy, they need to plan out a coherent story. That way even if different directors end up taking the helm, the movies plot wont shit the bed.

    • @writingref
      @writingref 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Consider that maybe they had a plan, and then panicked and changed it - if you examine all the data this is ore likely what happened as they attempted to appease fans.

    • @sergiomendoza4040
      @sergiomendoza4040 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Travis Hightower the fan appeasement after the last Jedi is what destroyed the plot in the rise of skywalker. I think the only thing that was out of Disney’s hands was Carrie fishers passing because she obviously was going to play a much bigger role in this movie. But other than that their need to appease the fans, rather than stick to the themes and ideas previously established in the first two movies is what killed the plot of the rise of skywalker.

    • @writingref
      @writingref 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sergio Mendoza I agree but I don’t think it “killed” the film. It’s doing ok and I liked it.
      But it is a disappointment considering what might have been. Many people who are good at writing will find some easy fixes that are baffling as to why they didn’t just make the obvious choice.
      One example is Kylo Ren on Mustafar. Why not make it look like MUSTAFAR and go to the Vader’s castle we saw in Rogue 1?
      A full sequence there could have been used to connect and explain the emperors return. Build a little mystery as both sides try to figure out if he’s really back. Kylo just finds him pretty much right away.
      All you have to do is cut the extra side quest with 3PO. Just have the dagger be a key.
      I don’t think Rey being a Palpatine was a Disney correction or retcon. I think it was an option they debated about because they were supposed to resurrect a young emperor like in Dark Empire.
      There’s even a listed actor who got cut from the film. I think snoke was supposed to be an old failed clone, but they were afraid suddenly to go full Dark Empire with the story.
      When they decided to have Ian McDermott return as the emperor everyone knows - THATs when they decided to go with Rey Palpatine instead of whatever matches the mirror vision

    • @JonSmith-hk1bq
      @JonSmith-hk1bq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sergiomendoza4040 Agreed. They were so busy course correcting, that they didn't realize they actually had a decent movie right in front of them. No matter what you think of The Last Jedi, the hero and villain relationship between Rey and Ben could have served as the bedrock for the next movie. The two of them fighting for the other's soul with the galaxy's fate in the balance could have made for a great movie. In some ways, they even made motions towards it, but the hitting of the panic button to introduce a new Big Bad kinda doomed the film as Kylo Ren took a backseat and the climax of the movie was Super Rey.

      speaking of the lightsaber, I really don't think the act of Luke throwing it in TLJ and Rey throwing it in TROS can be so directly compared as many seem to. Luke was simply trying to make a point, he tossed it very lightly over his shoulder knowing full well it was going to be perfectly fine. Rey was doing so straight up with the intent of truly destroying it, throwing it into a raging fire.
      and besides, Luke doing anything else there in that TLJ moment than what he did, I mean, if he just accepted it with a smile? that's getting to a finish line awfully fast, there's no drama in it.

    I think it's good that people are complaining about certain things, like Disney not having a plan for the trilogy from the beginning and hiring multiple directors with little to no communication or cooperation between them. Especially if they're going to bring on JJ "mystery box" Abrams for the first movie, a director who is notorious for setting up intrigue without any planned resolution. Disney has way too much money, power and talent to be handling arguably the biggest cinematic franchise in the world like it's the first Guardians of the Galaxy - "Let's just put this first one out there and see if they like it, we'll figure out what to do next if it does well."

  • @davidrich27
    @davidrich27 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    If they had set it up in TLJ, I think the Knights of Ren could’ve been the final big bad. I thought they were Luke’s ex-students and all disciples of Snoke. So presumably when Snoke died, they would run the first order as a council, with Kylo at the head. Then when Kylo turns light, he’d try to power down the war machine from within. They would see it as a sign of weakness, and pounce on him like wolves and leave him for dead. So in the end he has to team up with Rey to defeat them. But for any of that to work, a least a couple of them would need to be developed way earlier.

      @ChiSbaObePcheH11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Merennulli I don’t really agree with your view but honestly I think what storylines we find interesting is a very subjective thing. I was personally very intrigued by Hux pulling out his blaster and almost killing Ren before he wakes (which might also be a fun parallel to Luke standing over young Ben with his lightsaber) and the dynamic that comes from that moment. Hux is a scheming, calculating career officer and Ren is a hotheaded fighter who is very much not suited to actually being the supreme leader. Rey still had some unresolved issues with „going dark“ when she’s angry as shown at the beginning of RoS, I would’ve loved to have that explored as well

    I thought it was decent enough if not bloated and rushed in the pacing.
    I dont envy film makers in this day and age. How can you make a star wars film with millions of people speculating, having expectations and making demands of the movie makers to make THEIR personal ideal star wars movie.
    When a New Hope came out there was no back story, no planned arc for the trilogy. Just a vague outline of a story which they made up chunks of as they went along.
    Fast forward 40 years later and everybody who likes star wars has their own canon, expectations and theories about characters. I don't think we'll ever get that fabled perfect star wars trilogy. Firstly because the OT was far from perfect itself and secondly because the fans will disect every little detail and measure it against their perfect and unrealistic/poorly defined ideal of what the film should be.

If it was planned from the start then no matter how much free reign they gave to Johnson with TLJ they still would have told him to include atleast one scene to foreshadow his return. Studio Execs, Kathleen Kennedy and everyone else watched the dailys while filming TLJ, it's not like they were surprised by the fact Johnson put no references at all towards Palpatines return. @tobbe217 while that is interesting and humorous. Even if it's true, all that eludes to is that Rey is simply related to Palpatine. And that could've been JJ's intentions to have Rey be the granddaughter of Palpatine, but it in no way, nor does anything in TLJ, foreshadow Palpatine returning himself. I would've imagined the producers at the least saying to RJ: "You can tell whatever story you like and how you like, but you NEED to include these couple scenes just so we can setup the big reveals for the 3rd movie". Rey also should’ve killed ren on the Death Star & rey should’ve died after killing the emperor. The fact Ren survived none stop was just so silly & the emperor didn’t accomplish anything despite being ‘all powerful’. The whole movie was a carbon copy of return of the Jedi.

    I think that the main problem with this Star Wars trilogy is that, although they provide some good entertainment, these movies will not stand the test of time, and I can understand the frustration of some of the radical views of the fans that you guys were discussing because, on one hand, for a movie standard, it is a good film, but for a Star Wars movie standard it just doesn't make it, it doesn't leave you with that touch of epic-mystic-timeless sensation that a SW movie should have and that is why it fails to deliver.
    In my opinion, one of the major problems was not developing a great, solid villain that would have been taken seriously and where the plot revolts (It would have been interesting to see an antagonist that has an unique & powerful variation of the force, something that has not been seen before and that the heroes have to learn from it and grow a powerful force counterpart TOGETHER in order to defeat it, that would have make sense for all the hero and their arcs would have been better developed, but that's just my thoughts hehe).
    On the other hand, they should not have messed with the original crew legacy (Killing Han Solo in the way they did, portraying Luke as a failed old man), i mean, these characters had a LOT of pain & suffering in all the saga in general, it was totally unnecessary to scramble them like that. I think it would have been more respectful to leave them as the great heroes they were.
    I hope that if they make another trilogy, they develop a solid & timeless story and not a film that feels like it was a checklist for a Star Wars type-of-movie recipe, otherwise it will not work.

    • @boggless2771
      @boggless2771 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should have made a trilogy about the vong, or at least a similar concept. We've seen the galaxy fighting itself, but we've never seen the galaxy united.
      For a tv show, they could show the forming of the new republic, with leaders like ahsoka, ezra, and luke. Maybe they find palpatine's lair predicting the vong's invasion, nobody believes them, so they have to become the very thing they destroyed, the empire?
      But they just decided to remake the OT with better CGI, but less interesting because we've seen it before.

    I think this movie proves that fans don’t know what they want, but also that producers, writers, directors need to stick to their guns regardless of fan outrage. Because this movie has so much fan service and appeasement in it and despite that half the Star Wars fandom probably still hates it just as much as they hated the last Jedi and the force awakens. So at that point simply make the best movies you can regardless of who likes it. Because it has the name Star Wars people will watch it almost no matter what, Disney shouldn’t have been so afraid of all the backlash.

It would’ve meant that there was more opportunity to go even further into Ben’s redemption since we saw so little of him throughout the trilogy, cause remember kylo is his sith persona. Plus itd be more tragic cause he’d have to live with her being dead, the one he “loved”.. Also another plus would be that ya know the movie is called rise of skywalker, rey just took on the name after having identity issues about accepting who she was all film..Seeing the man who slaughtered the jedi at one time restore it wouldve been more meaningful imo

There'd be more logic in her accepting Kylo's offer of training her.

    Abrams' version would have worked well had he done all three movies. Most, if not all, problems with this movie are related to not having time do develop things properly, he needed the middle movie to do that. Also remember that the idea was for three different directors to direct these movies, Abrams jumped back in after Trevorrow left. To go into making a sequel trilogy to arguably the most important film series in cinema history, without having a clear idea of what needs to happen is, to understate it mildly, moronic. Kennedy made a pig's breakfast of this whole thing.

    I think Rian Johnson was trying to open up the series to more than a trilogy but J.J. had a closed loop story to tell. If the vision was to make it a trilogy and really close off the Skywalker saga, they should've had J.J. do all three, even if he's not our favorite choice. At least it would've been more cohesive. This movie wasn't the worst but clearly he was trying to jam two movies into one and it did the whole trilogy a disservice.

    • @viksaggu9085

    • @arjl880
      @arjl880 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@viksaggu9085 Disney is too focused on Disney's plans and agenda. I don't know Lucas's script but I would guess that it was a concise story that doesn't lead to expanding the universe into a series of show's, spinoffs and other trilogies with Disney plus in mind. Honestly though, they should've had Lucas just produce the next trilogy. I think he's still somewhat scarred by the response to the prequels and is done for now making SW movies. I'm sure his script was still better than this though

    How refreshing to hear a reasonable discussion about this film. So many angry, whiny babies crying about how this was “literally the worst movie ever made”. The film had issues, it was messy, it was rushed, but overall, it was satisfying. It could have been executed better but it was better than I was expecting (from the angry mob complaining how much this movie sucked). Hearing adults speaking like adults about a Star Wars movie is rare. Salute.
