      I think people give George too much credit for the original trilogy. He had a team of world class directors that he was friends with fresh out of film school that helped him. Spielberg was there and refused to help him on the next series

    I will say that the lightsaber sequence between Qui gon, Obi Wan and Maul was worth making the movie. It's still to me the best light saber battle in all the star wars movies and redeems episode 1, it justifies its existence.

    I watched the Phantom Menace today. I hadn't watched it in years. And I loved it, it was way better than I remembered. I got chills during the final duel, the world is amazing, the CGI is great, the politics is great, I even liked Jar Jar. I am not kidding.

    • @Grivian
      @Grivian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Irish Jester The Disney trilogy is absolute trash and it looks terrible too. The worst and most unimaginative alien and planet designs in the entire saga. That is to say if those movies are part of the saga, they are not. They are pieces of trash that will probably be decanonized soon to save the franchise. Disney basically copied the least important things from Star Wars and made it into a movie, hence the failure.
      As for the CGI, I disagree. It is dated in some places, just like it is in lotr and the original trilogy. But it holds up for the most part. I suggest you rewatch the prequels with an open mind instead of regurgitating what other people have said. Or present examples where they should have been "running" instead of walking. These are not ADHD filled characters who scream and run whenever something happens, they are a devout and political order and they don't act rashly. But when they have to they move, like during battle. I don't see the problem here. We are seeing alien worlds here, we have to suspend our disbeliefs somewhat. Just like we had to in the OT, which also had some clunky effects (which people don't want to admit)

      The reason the movie is so slow compared to others is that George Lucas knew this was part one of a trilogy (not true with the original Sta Wars), so the primary purpose of this movie was to set the stage for Episodes II and III.

    Now that you mention that fact of the prequels adding a bunch of lore with all the alien designs and such, makes me realize how little the new sequels are adding. Everyone important is human, barely feels like this is space with everyone being human (aside from chewey)

    • @KevinAccetta
      @KevinAccetta 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Irish Jester Obviously there are going to be aliens. They can't just make a new movie with every single character being human all of a sudden. My point is that there are no important alien characters, aside from previous ones. The only new important one is Maz, but the main crew are all human. No new aliens that take a role similar to characters like Chewey or Yoda or Ahsoka or Darth Maul or General Grievous, and not to say those characters were great in the original movies (or shows), but they existed and played an important role.

    The worst crime of "TPM" and the prequels was the fans not allowing Lucas to fully develop the "Darth Jar Jar " theory ...the evidence that he is using drunken fist style movement and combat and a sort of "force luck" trick on top of master level "force manipulation" is overwhelming. U must remember CGI in 1999 was very expensive and these moments Jar Jar is shown doing these slight "weird" movements are not by error or chance they were purposely placed there! had we not got so frustrated as a fan base that even Darth Jar Jar manipulated the viewing audience we would've been set up for a truly mind blowing reveal in the prequel trilogy. Now all we have left is Jar Jar theories smh shame on us "No Patience we showed in Grand-master Lucas"

    3. The lightsaber duels are good.
    4. The all out war for naboo at the end is amazing.
    5. The podrace is great.
    6. Qui-gon is an awesome character.
    7. Jar Jar was the phantom menace.

I did grow up with this movie, so I probably view it more fondly lol I can understand how people are probably disappointed by the introduction of midichlorians, but I always viewed them as being a gauge for someone’s potential. For example, anyone can connect with the force, but some will just be more adept at doing so. I look at it like the separation between regular people who can play sports and athletic stars. We can all practice really hard, but some just have incredible physical gifts that take them to different levels.

      Lucas wrote most of Star Wars. The drafts are available online if you want to see them. Lots of people had a hand in it, Marcia Lucas, Katz and Hucyck, and even Brian De Palma re-wrote the opening scrawl. But that's all script doctoring and pretty much par for the course in Hollywood.

Personally, I think r1 is a better begining for new comers to SW because ANH was filmed in a different time, pacing is very very slow midway through the movie. A lot of friends had a hard time getting through ANH.

    Yeah, true. I was 8 when I saw it in the cinema and loved it. I was already a huge Star Wars fan and anticipated Episode 1, because I kept rewatching the original trilogy on VHS with my older cousins. I didn't really like Clones when I originally saw it in 2002, but around 2003-04, right before Sith, I realized that no, Clones is pretty bad, and Phantom Menace isn't much better either. I liked Revenge of the Sith in 2005 tho', but the prequel hate went on until around 2013 when I gave the Clone Wars a chance and started to look back to the prequels with nostalgia. I guess the sequel trilogy will be much more appreciated around 2030-2040. xD

Apparently Lucas planned to make all of Jar Jar’s stupid behavior be on purpose to cover up he’s a Sith Lord and reveal it in later films. But after he was so universally hated he bailed on the idea. There’s a lot of evidence in the movie that this could be true.

    LOL Padme was the one that called a vote for no confidence cuz right before anakin wants to see her but she’s already changed into queen amidala.
    I highly recommend reading queens shadow it’s a cannon novel and it give a good perspective into Padme when she first becomes senator

    I'm a fan of the over the top fight choreography in the prequels. I feel like since the light and dark side are in balance that the Sith concentrate the dark side as much as possible with the rule of 2 so they're stupid strong... plus Darth Maul's backstory is intense. Dude's a badass and his fights were appropriate. Then in AotC Yoda is the form 4 GOAT so he's obviously gonna be a pinball. He's gotta use the force to enhance his fighting capabilities due to his age which is why the Emperor wore him out. Then by the time RotS happens Obi-wan has progressed into the form 3 GOAT which counters Anakin's form 5. Then the mirroring of moves is clearly to show how close they were with each other. I like to think that while they were spinning their weapons both were trying to get their weapon in a position to strike but as it got there they'd sense it would be blocked so they just feigned and moved to the next hand and repeat. Eh. This fight is dope to me cuz it shows Obi-wan's ability to pull from his experience and have it directly applied to his fights. Especially with the Darth Maul rematch. Don't fight Obi-wan twice.... .... cept Darth Vader. But that's Anakin once and Darth Vader once so maybe it doesn't count... and, idk, Obi-Wan basically committed suicide on the Death Star so maybe it's a moot point.
    Anyway...
    George Lucas likes flashy. People talk about how the prequels were obsessed with CGI but the OG trilogy was a huge feat in special effects. Industrial Light & Magic is a premier company to this day. So his movies involve a lot of it. I expect it. It's like going to a Tarantino film and expecting blood, swearing, and unnecessary use of the word ni--er.

    The rumor behind midichlorians introductions is hilarious though.
    Since people said their wasn’t enough science in his Star Wars to make it science fiction he wanted to remove the mysticism and gave it a firm reason.
    Arguably the original trilogy is a space fantasy and not a science fiction trilogy.

    The Phantom Menace didn't just use more CGI than any other movie, at the time, remember Terminator 2, Titanic and Jurassic Park had all been possible in the first place, up to 8 or 9 years prior to the prequels, because of the technology that George Lucas inveted.
    And George was still developing the technology necessary to even pull off what he did in this movie, which is why it obviously isn't always going to hold up to modern scrutiny, especially three decades later.
    Keep in mind, he literally INVENTED Industrial Light and Magic in order to make the original trilogy happen, and by the time the prequels were getting ready to be made, ILM had become the premier computer and special effects company that Hollywood studios went to in order to make THEIR movies.
    Attack of the Clones had twice as much CGI as ThePhantom Menace, and Revenge of the Sith doubled it up again, pushing the technology so far into the future there wasn't a story from a filmmaker's imagination that couldn't be told by the time the prequels dropped.
    But, watch any of the many, "behind the scenes," or, "making of," documentaries about the prequels, and you'll notice right away the surprising amount of miniature and practical effects still being used, even if George would have preferred making an, "all blue screen," Star Wars movie, that was still self preventative based on cost, at the time.
    But, we're still talking about George Lucas and his, "mission," to tell this, "Skywalker Saga," story, and what he was forced to create completely in order to do so, the development of the technology necessary to achieve such a goal that has spawned entire industries all within themselves, from Pixar animation Studios to ILM and THX digital Sound, that appears with that iconic sound before almost every movie you'll see in the Theater to this day.
    ALL of it a result of Lucas' direct influence while making Star Wars happen.
    I think he's perfectly allowed to have some, "bad," CGI in his films, because he was literally creating that technology at the time to begin with.
    Disappointment is ONLY a reflection of our irrationally, unreasonable and unrealistically lofty expectations, which is demonstrated by the simple fact that not ONE of us can credibly claim to have done any better.
    That's evidenced by the fact that nobody else was even trying, because they all believed it to be impossible, up until the moment that George Lucas came along, with a story he wanted to tell.
    For that I am, and we should ALL be, appreciative of what we've gotten, the "good" AND the "bad."

      I think thats why its one of my favorite. I watched when I was 6 when it first came out. The original trilogy was actually boring to me, but phantom menace sparked my interest to watch the other episodes and eventually get about 15 star wars video games and read a few books.
      Maybe cause I was too young to overanalyze plot schemes and character development.
      That being said I still like it more than episode 2-3 as well as the new trilogy.

    He had his wife, Marcia Lucas, on the editing team in A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back... A she and the other editors saved those movies... It's why George redid everything, he always felt he could of edited them better (Kathleen Kennedy was his sycophantic yesman). During the making of the prequels he kept saying he was an editor, and movies are made in the editing; and only his magical editing skills can not only make the prequels great, but he can make the original trilogy films better.

    GL kinda knew that people weren't gonna like it for a few different reasons, partly because apparently he chose to film the PT in the feel of 1930s movies (since Star Wars has sort of a reference to real world politics during certain times) and literally no one was filming movies that way anymore.
    It definitely backfired but apparently it was done with him being fully aware it was gonna backfire.
    His ST would have been trippy too (bc it goes into the whole Whills stuff he planned out) and he says that'd have probably pissed some people off again but "at least the full story would have actually been told".
    Btw! Keira and Natalie switch times they're in Queen Amidala costumes/makeup. The Vote of No Confidence is Natalie as Padmé, and you can see the times when Keira/Sabé is in costume that she actually waits for a subtle response from Padmé to make any decisions. (Except when she tells her own queen to go clean up a droid lmao) An example is when she looks over to Padmé when Qui-Gon suggests they leave Naboo, and Padmé says that they were brave or whatever, and that's the only time the "Queen" agrees to leave. The costumes and makeup were done so well that not even Natalie's and Keira's parents could tell them apart when they were in them. (The costumes of Amidala are some of my fave things from the PT, if you couldn't tell.)
    (Also: The whole "Sidious created Anakin" in the comics isn't meant to be literal. I mean, Vader sees Padmé during that time too and she literally just says his own lines back to him. So it's still meant to be up for fan interpretation, and there's still no genuine answer to it.)
    Either way though, I really enjoy your reviews and they always make me laugh.

    Oh those accents:
    Trade Federation- stereotypical Asian
    Watto the greedy, scheming, slave owning junk dealer- stereotypical Yiddish
    Jar Jar- some bizarre mix of stereotypical Carib and African American
    I saw this movie at 25 and it was immediately jarring. Greedo, Chewbacca, Jabba, Jawas, Ewoks all speak a different unique language then we get to the prequels everybody speaks English just with a stereotypical accent? It’s one of the many things that contribute to people saying that these movies didn’t “feel” like Star Wars movies

    • @andyroobrick-a-brack9355
      @andyroobrick-a-brack9355 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. You could make the exact same argument about the English and American accents. There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from the real world.

    • @carltontaylor6500
      @carltontaylor6500 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andyroo Brick-a-Brack allow me to retort. The English and American accents weren’t a choice, or direction, the actors were actually English or American and spoke in their natural voice. Nute Gunray speaks with a stereotypical Japanese accent, the actor who portrays him is not Japanese, so as an actor or the director made a choice and told everybody playing that type of alien to speak with the same accent. The actor who did Watto is a classically trained Welsh actor so for the haggling, dirty, slave owning, big nose alien he chose a vaguely Israeli accent. So no, it’s not the same thing. Setting that aside...why are they speaking English at all? The first Star Wars film felt alien because of course not all these creatures would speak the same language. That everybody spoke English (with a bad accent) in my opinion made the movie feel small like a sci fi tv show rather than a spreading space epic.

      @@carltontaylor6500 I still disagree with the argument that accents are a huge, even noticable problem. I never, ever focused on the accents of a character because it's a small part of world building. I'd argue the prequels were more diverse and sprawling in terms of the culture and aliens, discluding the accents. I hope you see where I'm coming from, but I just don't think it's a big deal at all, nor does it affect the quality of the movie.
