      Just the tone that James Earl Jones used with that second half of the sentence: "...but you are not a Jedi yet." it wasn't sarcasm, but there was derision. This was the first time the two characters had ever faced one another...but even more importantly, this was the first time Anakin had been in the presence of his only known offspring. This was his son...and he was pulling his punches during the fight--but here the arrogance and confidence of Anakin was on display. "Yes, I know you're my only child, and have some talent in the Force...but you have absolutely NO chance against me."
      So he threw some shade on Luke, knowing the mind game is part of the way to beat him, so he wouldn't have to kill him...because even then, in the depth of despair of BOTH father and son, Anakin still cared enough for Luke to give him a fighting chance to survive.
      Remember, never once does Vader say "Now you will die." He always says, "You will meet your destiny." That's some cognitive dissonance for Anakin to not even be able to mention to his son he could kill him. Even at his most evil, he cares for Luke at some level...and that shred of humanity, that love for his son (and perhaps as the last part of Padme that survived) is what Luke works on in Return of the Jedi to finally pull his father back from the depths of darkness.

    You also forgot to mention just how good a performance Mark Hamill delivers in this, and throughout the OT. More than anyone else, he had to work opposite droids and creatures and blue screen effects and he makes them all look convincing. Plus, more than any other character, Luke grows and changes throughout the OT. He was a likable yet naive kid in ANH, here he's a skilled yet reckless Rebel, and he'll be a haunted and thoughtful Jedi in ROTJ. And he played each phase perfectly.

    I was one of the lucky people who watched this movie in the theatre (13 times) when it came out in 1980. When it ended I was very upset , worried about Han and knowing I would have to wait 3 years to find out what came next. ESB is definitely my favourite movie of all time. It truly is a perfect movie.

    The reason they don't wear seatbelts in the Falcon is the internal compensator which creates an artificial gravity field on the ship, all space ships have it in order to make sure people won't pass out from the Gs. Techy answer and all but just pointing it out

    • @ryanratchford2530
      @ryanratchford2530 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We previously saw this in ANH in the gunport sequence. The turrets are located at the top and bottom of the ship, but gravity is adjusted to that Han & Luke can sit in the seats normally without drag.

    I saw Star Wars in the theater when it came out, one of the most memorable moments of my childhood. They kept on releasing it every summer thereafter, and I went to see it after begging my mom to let me it by myself 😊 The 3 year wait...I mean it was forever...for Empire. My mom took my sister and me, the theater was packed and we had to sit separately. Man what an experience.

    Stuart Freeborn is seldom credited for his contribution to the success of Yoda. Frank Oz deserves every bit of praise he receives as the master puppeteer and performer he is; but master craftsman Stuart Freeborn created the Yoda puppet modelled on himself and Albert Einstein. Yoda's resemblance to Freeborn is breathtaking.
    To round it out as you discussed, Mark Hamill's brilliant performance can't be understated when discussing what it took to bring Yoda to life and make him so believable and lovable on screen.
    Easily the best STAR WARS movie and one of the best films of all time thanks to Irvin Kershner.

    At 12:00, I think the reason the AT-AT Walker only blows up when it's on its knees is because of the gap between the Walker's head and neck. That gap *is* vulnerable to blaster fire, but it's harder to hit when the Walker is on its fit than when it's on its knees.

    I always thought that Vader tortured Han and Leia because he knew Luke would come to help them. I mean, right? That is why Luke left Yoda, he felt they were in pain at Cloud City. Yoda tells him that he saw the future. A few scenes later, the torture begins.

  • @greenmonsterprod
    @greenmonsterprod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Re: 26:18, on the contrary. Luke does affect the situation. He's too late to help Han, but at least he's out of Vader's clutches. But when he shows up, Vader seems to lose interest in the others. He sends them away so he can focus on Luke, which gives Lando the chance to help them escape. If Luke hadn't gone to the rescue, I'm sure Vader would've cut his losses, spaced Leia & Chewie, and melted Threepio down. Yes, Luke lost the duel, but, to quote "M*A*S*H", he "screwed up in reverse" and helped his friends.

    ESB is an extremely draining film in the last 3rd, in the best way possible. I get chills every time Luke reacts to Vader's reveal. Also earlier when Yoda says "you will be..."

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think one of the cool things revolving around the whole classic reveal, while Kershner told Mark Hamill just before they shot the scene that Vader was his father and that along with Lucas they were the only ones to know for awhile, for the practical shooting for secrecy's sake they have the guy in the suit (forget his name) say "Obi-wan killed your father", which still reasonably fits Luke's reaction. He would've been devastated in the moment to a huge degree to learn his mentor is the one who smoked his dad (even had it later shown to be something like justified self defense).

  • @joebundens2197

    One great scene was when the admiral walks into Vader’s meditation chamber and you catch a glimpse of Vader’s scarred head. At this point, you didn’t know who he was, if he was human or alien. Now the audience knows a slight glimpse of the human before we knew him as Anakin Skywalker.

    What seems to be missing in the final episodes of the Star Wars saga, especially in 'Solo - A Star Wars Story' is the lack of bright front lighting in most of the scenes and adding of too much blue to the color palate of the film. This is a subject that is seldom covered in these types of videos.

Why is the Empire so stupid that they would construct the AT-AT to only be able to fire forward AND construct its *very exposed* neck out of such a highly explosive material that it detonates the entire vehicle with 2 hits from a light aircraft? And why are the rebels somehow even more so stupid that they don't use this impossibly absurd design flaw to their advantage even after learning about it first-hand?

    Empire Strikes Back is legitimately such a defining film for the franchise (RIP Leigh Brackett and Irvin Kershner). The Force assisting those who trusted in it with full faith comes through in Return and Force Awakens and Last Jedi so well that it seems a shame when Rise of Skywalker felt the urge to explain it away with their own version of midichlorians by attaching it to magical bloodlines like a Dungeons and Dragons magic system or Tolkien heroic destiny.
    The entire lesson of Luke's struggle with faith in Empire, his refusal to listen to Yoda or even believe, hits a bullseye when you see Rey do the exact opposite in TLJ and fully embrace that wonder. Then it just kind of falls flat when the next movie autopilots into blood tests and family trees.

    Yoda was based on a Taoist Hermit, so amine using that trope is natural.

    Lucas was in the writers guild directors guild. He pulled out after empire because they fined him $200,000 for having no acting credits at the start of the film.

    Vader tortured Han I think, so Luke would get visons of it through the force, therefore, drawing Luke into Cloud City.

    Disney took an epic space couple like Han and Leia and fuck it up. Their kind of love would have lasted with them driving each other crazy long into old age. Kylo’s story was so mishandled.

    Did we really watch the same sequel fights, I think you're one of the only people I've seen praise them. The prequel fights make sense IMO when you consider they're jedi in their prime, they can see the future so it makes sense that their fights have that back and forth.

    22:24 "nobody's wearing seatbelts, and they're doing a lot of barrel rolls"
    Artificial gravity always points towards the floor of the ship. They'll feel some force due to the roll, but they'll never feel upside down

    • @SnailHatan
      @SnailHatan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t matter which way gravity “points” if they’re rolling around without seatbelts. They would immediately slam into the side of the ship. And if the AG was strong enough to prevent them from flopping around, they would be suffocated under their own weight.
