If you look at this entire trilogy as the story of Kylo Ren trying to get a girlfriend and failing everytime until he finally succeeds in the third one, but he’s so shy from his first kiss with Rey that he dies from death, it makes it so much better.

I’ve heard video essays say this movie is misunderstood but I almost want to say.. near objectively.. you can see the seams, it’s definitely a reactive movie. Highly corporate driven, nonsensical plots, nostalgia bait, marvel style humor (which is already old at the is point).
And like you said, clearly no uniform direction in three movies. It’s almost criminal how mishandles this property was. Actors were great though - I hate that ‘fans’ harass actors.

John Boyega is such a fantastic actor and personality and these films just managed to waste him. I was excited for both Black characters, Finn and Jana. And they managed to fuck up the announcement of their characters in the exact same way. And then used that to kinda ruin a canonical OG Black character.
I was also excited for Kelly Marie Tran when they announced her. While I didn't really like what they did with her in The Last Jedi, I was absolutely livid by what JJ did to her in this film. And then just to give lines that could've gone to her to his friends! Dominic Monahan didn't need to say anything.
The one thing it did correctly was introduce Babu Frik.

They tried to make a new story while telling the old story. They reverted luke back to a whiny teenager, Han back to a smuggler, and leia back into a single minded general. Luke had faith in Vader, who killed millions. But was ready to kill his nephew over a fever dream? And this movie had no stakes. Chewys dead, NeverMind. C-3PO’s minds wiped, no it’s not. Rey’s dead, no she’s not. She beat grand master Luke in combat with no Jedi training. I could go on, but yea. Sequels are unimaginative money grabs

In the time leading up to TROS release, even though I never went looking for any of the leak information, sometimes you can barely help hearing some things. I remember thinking there's simply NO WAY that they would totally switch the whole "Rey's parentage" thing, because in doing so, it would be blatantly showcasing the fact that they think Rian Johnson fucked up, that it'd be throwing him under the bus. like even if they thought this, they'd never actually do it because it would reflect badly on filmmaker/studio relations. Especially given the fact that Johnson was the one director they DIDN'T have any problems with during the whole production of any of their post-2015 deal movies! literally every other movie there was some degree of behind the scenes drama on, some to the point of replacements being made, except The Last Jedi, the shoot went smoothly. So when I finally saw the movie, and that they practically put a giant neon sign around the change, I was like woah thats kinda fucked up. They really did RJ dirty.

But then Poe’s past is revealed to be a spice runner, the SW equivalent of drugs. The irony of casting a great actor like Oscar Isaac as (initially) just a badass resistance pilot, and also a former drug runner? Tragic.

Very much enjoyed this revisit. In The OG Trilogy the greatest thing was the chemistry of the cast. When the cast was sperated and then reunited it was always emotional in some way. I think with this new trilogy they could have had that with Rey, Finn and Poe but after TLJ they just lost it. Adam Driver is the best thing in this trilogy and I will rewatch this Movie just for Kylo's transitions to Ben. He is only fully Ben for a short time but you see the change. When he pulls the light saber out of the force and does that shrug. Best moment.

Say what you want about the prequel trilogy, when George Lucas sat down to write it, he first and foremost made a point to make it as distinct and different from the o/t as possible!
There were completely new worlds, environments, creatures, droids, characters and (arguably most importantly) vehicles, etc.
Absolutely everything was fresh, and new.
With these sequels it's nothing but slightly updated versions of everything we've all already seen before. (Particularly derivative of the original trilogy.)
Slightly different X-Wings, Tie Fighters, a bigger Imperial Walker. A bigger, updated Death Star.
We may have had to suffer with Jar Jar lol but at least the movies we were watching took a whole new bold, fresh direction!
While STILL managing to keep it all planted firmly within the established Star Wars Galaxy.
You could see, if you squinted real hard, how the starships would eventually evolve into what we saw in the original trilogy, throughout the prequels.
But, if they didn't have lightsabers, Jedi, and a few other basic fundamentals like hyperspace, blasters, etc., there would have been very little to nothing to tell you were watching events taking place within the same cinematic universe.
That's one of my biggest issues with this most recent batch of; "Skywalker Saga," films.
That it's a really lazy, scattered, Chris Terrio of a "story," leaning almost entirely on an aesthetic, down to the smallest detail, like every little thing, that had to be derivative of what came before.
Nothing fresh, nothing new. Unimaginative, uninspiring, and wholly underwhelming, as a result.
And I honestly tried enjoying them all. Seriously arguing with myself on the way home lol finding myself defending what I'd just witnessed.
And, the proof is that; while I can still rewatch both the original and prequel trilogies endlessly, (as well as the animated Clone Wars and Rebels series both, Solo and Rogue One,) I STILL can't bring myself to try watching any of the sequel films, no matter how hard I try.
Beau is right, when he says The Rise of Skywalker is essentially just a corporate, soulless money grab.
It really makes one wonder, after this in addition to the a couple recent DC universe films, why ANYONE would continue to call Chris Terrio to write a script lol ever again!
(Not exactly a; "winning" track record!)
    (I'm just sayin' ✌️)

The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker are both deeply flawed, but at least Rise is a more watchable, fast-paced ride when you turn part of your brain off. TLJ is so painful to sit through. And I don't care, the Kylo/Han scene and Leia's death were really well done (Driver is awesome), as was Luke's appearance and raising the X-wing and Rey vs Kylo on the DSII. Plus, Poe actually getting some better scenes that made sense for his character was really nice, too. Finn should have been a Jedi by the third film leading a stormtrooper rebellion, but TLJ trashed his character completely so Rise didn't have time to develop it.

If they insisted on bringing in a big bad guy to redeem Kylo (and since the previous 2 movies did little to build him as a legit threat to Rey), then they should have either gone with someone new (yes I know they already had someone new that they killed off in the last movie) or Darth Plagueis. I think fans could have accepted Plagueis surviving much easier than Palpetine since we only heard about his death with very little details. We didn't see him get thrown down a shaft and then see the Death Star get blown up with him presumably still on it.

It had to be kylo and rey in love and not rey and finn because the movie wouldn't be sold in China otherwise

This remains, hands down, the single dumbest movie I have ever seen. Before this movie I didn't think a movie could actually be insultingly bad, but this movie is insultingly bad. I'm a middle of the road Star Wars fan, I liked 2/3rds of TLJ, but this... this made me lose respect not just for the franchise but also every bit of respect for JJ Abrams as a director. At least it gives me something to point to for the dumbest thing a mega-corporation has done in a succinct and easier to explain way. It's become my go-to for certain topics, so at least it's not totally devoid of value, just of intelligence and integrity.

Rian Johnson is a better director for visuals and for getting actors to perform well emotionally, but he is the worst at pacing and plot. He should never have been trusted with writing a screenplay, but could have done well with something written by someone else.

I love hearing people shit on Rise of Skywalker, because that’s the one that finally did it for me, pushed me over the edge. I used to be a major Star Wars fan. I actually even really liked The Last Jedi. But after Rise of Skywalker… I lost all interest in Star Wars. They killed it for me. It was awful Hollywood cliche super hero shlock.

Even with all it's flaws I still really enjoy this movie and it's better than The Last Jedi, I'm a Rey fan and Kylo is overrated

It's a bunch of great concepts that individually are very interesting but without setup and structure it doesn't work...
The Last Jedi is a good flick on its own but then you have to shoehorn in all these ideas in TRoS..
The Last Jedi also undercuts every other film in the franchise but I digress...
    No cohesiveness through this trilogy.
Basic writing concepts totally ignored to ruin a great franchise.

This will be the next generation's prequels this will be meme gold in 10 years. That's how stupid the dialogue is and the story and everything else. Horrible ending to a promising trilogy

Rey and Poe fight constantly for NO reason. Finn was thrown to a side story, again. Boring "space chase". Horrible lightsaber choreography. Wasted characters. Stupid story. Multiple resurrections for no reason. I HATE THIS FUCKIN MOVIE!!!!!

Given how bad and disrespectful Last Jedi was, I truly believe this movie was as best it could be because it HAD to undo Last Jedi. Any other option and following through with things set up in Last Jedi would have been much much worse

Why’d you “revisit” this? Reopening old, healed wounds. All of Disney’s Star Wars involvement needs to be FORGOTTEN. Kathleen Kennedy & JarJar Abrams destroyed the most beloved franchise in American cinema.
