Venamis was an interesting challenge. He seemed weaker and less experienced than Plagueis who most likely had decades of experience on him, but the sheer excitement, ease and style with his dueling styles really put Plagueis on edge and made him fall back on the force to get the victory. What if Venamis trained Sidious, assuming it would still go a similar path? Tenebrous put his eagerness and love for dueling into Venamis. In the canon, Plagueis and Sidious put power of the force and its abilities before dueling. Would Sidious be a more warrior type Sith, and be even more dangerous with his sabers? His "weakest" form was dueling yet he toyed with Maul and Savage, and was almost 50/50 with Windu. Would a more duel oriented Sidious have killed Windu even before Anakin would intervene? Swapping Plagueis with Venamis would make such an interesting turn.
A valid point. Sidious, despite being a master of all seven lightsaber forms, felt that his powers had surpassed the need for such weapons, and only used them as a way to mock the Jedi. Moreover, while only the best of opponents could stand against him in a duel, his preference for using the Force in battle is rather evident. I believe, however, that the strongest tool in Sidious' arsenal was his manipulation. It has long been argued that he threw the fight with Mace Windu so as to complete the final step necessary to turn Anakin to the Dark Side, something he had wanted to do for over a decade. Had Sidious not put himself in "danger", Anakin wouldn't likely have acted so quickly out of fear of losing the chance to save his wife.
After this confrontation plagueis put venamis into stasis to experiment on him, after taking sidious as an apprentice the pair killed and resurrected venamis several times until his mind was a less than that of a vegetable at which point they let him die for the final time
The narrator is excellent, really sounds like a Sith Lord. Personally, whenever I read Plagueis' lines in the novel, I hear James Hong's voice in my head.
There are some bits that no longer make sense in canon in this book (bits that come to mind is how Sidious obtained Maul + the town on Dathomir where he got him shouldn't exist and how Dooku became a count only after Qui-Qon's death, but he became the count of Serenno in the Jedi Lost book years before Phantom Menace), but a vast majority might as well be made canon and wouldn't contradict anything.
I’ve listened to this book up to 40 times on Audible. Even before getting the book I’ve heard many good things about it and after listening to it, it’s so underrated. I’ve listened to several Star Wars books and Darth Plagueis takes the cake for me as best SW Novel ever written.
This book is so much better than any of the crap written under Kathleen Kennedy, what a joke Lucasfilm is, James Luceno you are a what Star wars needed not the woke crap we got under Kathleen's tyranny. #FireKathleenKennedy
The author did a great job at subtly showing why Venamis was not suited to be an apprentice, he wasn't perceptive and manipulative as he should be. A logical response to his invasion would be to send the sun guard, the only reason Plagueis made a "tactical mistake" was because the Force was aiding him in keeping the Sith a secret. Venamis's perception in the Force was lax, not sensing a major shift like his master's death. He relied purely on martial prowess, with no tricks in reserve or escape plans. He was told he presumed much, but still thought he was ensured apprenticeship and did not pivot to saving his life by demonstrating value to Plagueis. In short, he was a blood knight. I doubt one of the greatest engineers in galactic history would choose someone so clumsy to inherit his mantle, Darth Tenebrous probably taught him to force Plagueis to reveal his hand, allowing him to prepare for the final duel the Rule of Two demanded. When Plagueis killed Tenebrous by cunning, Venamis was left as a purposeless loose end.

@@chase1146 even with that being the case , some suspect Disney will go as far as to even disregard Lucas’s work to the point where Plagueis won’t be muun, and the show takes place 100 years before TPM. Plaguies was 115 years old when he died during TPM, meaning Plagueis would only be 15 during the show… so Ofcourse the age and time of death wasn’t a canonical thing but goes to show Disney will go out their was to change as much as they can

@@ykwtfgo interesting that they want it to be a tournament even though 100 years before phantom menace is still well with in banes line of sith. more so that they kept bane and the russan reformations in canon as being a thousand years ago.
In my humble opinion, "Darth Plagueis" is the best Star Wars novel ever written.
That is an opinion you and I share
Yes narrowly beats the Darth Bane trilogy

This book and audio book are true masterpieces of Star Wars story telling... Absolutely needs to be made cannon and brought to the big screen.

I agree. I hope the author Luceno is doing well. I thank him for the great books he wrote and consider them the best Star Wars content.

such a great novel. my favorite sith no doubt plageueis
I agree it was the best starwars book I had read the only other ones I enjoyed as much was the Darth Bane books 1-3.
Read this in prison! Very very inspiring book. Notice a recurring behavior in Plageius- he did EVERYTHING in *secret*
Can’t wait until Disney retcons everything in the acolyte 😢
In fairness, this does already fall under legends so it’s not exactly canonically sound.
Until it is directly contradicted though it’s good enough

Thanks.
Great Novel! New Cover? So is it Canon now? I don’t see the “Legends” label…
It's not Canon, but it should be.
It’s canon , Disney is not canon
No, Disney is reprinting certain “Legends” books in a trade paperback series called “Essential Legends” with new covers.
The Star Wars books coming out now are so pitiful compared to this.
Plagueis stops the story to duel.a middle schooler's OC.
Hardly mate, isn’t that far fetched to assume the Sith are a little less then faithful to the rule of two.
Nah, you're thinking of Darth Penamis, the Bulbousian who pioneered the ability Force Shaft.
